So you're not trying to put a Shortcut on your home screen. You need to create a bookmark in the Wake On Lan app itself and get the automate to trigger that. You don't need to add anything to the home screen. Once you've created a bookmark to the PC you want to wake in Wake On Lan, automate should be able to see that bookmark and run it.
Same for me, ive created bookmark, i click pick shortcut on automate, click on wol shortcut, it then takes me to wol app i click on my bookmark and it doesnt add it on automate, it just asks if i want to add to home screen.
Create a shortcut in the WOL app to trigger the wake on lan command, then in automate select 'Apps->app shortcut start' you'll then see the list of apps with shortcuts and WoL should be there.
@@AndysTechLife Hey Andy, could you further explain how to make a shortcut in the WOL app? I can't find it, and I'm having the same problem that I can't find the shortcut in the Automate app.
There's possibly a way to do this with iPhone shortcuts but unfortunately the automate app isn't available. Apple phones also don't play very nicely with IFTTT at times. 😞
hey i got a question, how can i open the settings tab in wake on lan app, when i click the three lines it doesnt show up so that make me unable to make a shortcut for the device
If you have the correct Wake On Lan app installed (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.uk.mrwebb.wakeonlan&hl=en&gl=US) you use the plus sign to add new devices and search for the PC while on the the wireless. Note you may have to do this manually by adding the IP address and MAC address of your lan card. Then all you need to do is give it a name and add it to the 'bookmarked' group when you set it up. Long hold and click the pen icon to edit this if you need to. This is enough to create this as a shortcut.
Same for me, ive created bookmark, i click pick shortcut on automate, click on wol shortcut, it then takes me to wol app i click on my bookmark and it doesnt add it on automate, it just asks if i want to add to home screen.
Seems like since the last update, it's doing the same for me. Either automate or wake on lan has changed something. If I figure a work around, I'll let you know. :(
Andy I cant select the shortcut from automate app. I can find it but when i press it tells me to add the shortcut to the home screen infinitely. Can u help me?
It sounds like automate is not actually triggering the bookmark for your PC and instead calling the option to add the bookmark to the home screen. Best bet is to remove the bookmark for the PC you're looking to wake in the Wake on Lan app and re-add it there. Then make sure that when you go back to Automate you choose Apps -> App Shortcut Start -> Pick Shortcut. Then scroll down to Wake on Lan app and you should get the screen to pick the device or group in Wake On Lan. If this doesn't work I'm not sure what the issue is.
No, unfortunately this won't work on Wi-Fi as your wireless card is off and not connected to the network when the laptop is off so it can't listen for a wake command. It will only work with wired LAN connections as these can be connected and powered even with the PC off.
In my case, for some reason I have to click start on the automate app to this to work. I'm not sure if I have it setup correctly, but I made sure every dot was connected
You might need to create a loop from the end of the routine to the beginning. What way when it runs once it loops back to the start ready to run again.
JFTR, Alexa & PC needs only the TriggerCMD skill. It'll trigger a simple AutoHotkey script to execute/terminate whatever you like on your remote PC. If you are OK with pressing a single button instead of yelling it into your Android device you can use 'UDPRun' and trigger whatever script/app on your box.
I've another video for Wake on lan with Alexa as there's a skill available. In terms of other scripts for PC, I'm looking at a few options, but hopefully when the PC version of Alexa app matures there will be more PC control. Until then still experimenting.
Best thing is to try a walk on lan app on the phone to test if the PC is setup correctly. If this doesn't work you know its the PC setup itself. If this is the case best to Google your particular PC or motherboard to see if there's any specific settings. Remember this won't work on WiFI will only work with the PC connected to LAN / Wired connection.
the WOL app wont find my pc, is there a reason for that? connected to wifi and pc to LAN, also activated all WOL functions on my pc and still dosent work :/
You'll need to set it up on the WolSkill website first so that it can find the correct MAC address for the PC. So on the website you can create an account and add the name of the PC you want to control and the MAC address of the LAN card and then WolSkill skill in Alexa should find it. Check out this video for full tutorial on WolSkill: th-cam.com/video/MDRnVnWt11Y/w-d-xo.html
Okay I got it to work, my two misstakes was not to fufill the flowchart, missed one single drag from SMS to the shortcut trigger, annoyed me before I found the culprit However, is there any way to make the command for google assistant to get the "activate" removed, and to change it to my native language? I would like to have it "hey google, start computer" but in my own language, but then google thinks that I want to activate a device, not just run the command
Don't think there's a way to remove the 'activate' as this is the trigger for IFTTT commands as far as I remember. You can have other phrases in the IFTTT applet, but I think you'll always need to start with 'activate'. As for other languages, I don't know if IFTTT supports this, but the best would be to see if you can change the language on your Google device and on IFTTT and see if that works maybe?
Unfortunately Automate doesn't have an iOS version. There is a similar app on iOS called workflow but I haven't tried it myself. You'd also need a WOL iPhone app. Might be possible with Apple shortcuts but I don't see an easy way to do it.
I tried this out and Automate seems to take any text to myself, from my own number as the trigger to continue downstream. Is there a way to take the SMS as a text input?
There's an option in automate to take any message from a number as a trigger, but if you keep scrolling down there's an option to input the specific text from the message. See 7:00 and 7:12. If you leave the 'message' section blank it will take any message as the trigger so make sure this is populated.
i shutdown the computer and when i click my computer in the app, all i get is "computer woken" but doesnt actually turn on. i double checked all settings showed and it still doesnt work. is it because im using wifi? the wifi is built in to my mother board (B450 aorus pro wifi)
Yup, unfortunately this doesn't work via WiFi as most PCs turn off the WiFi card when the PC is off, and even if you prevent this, the WiFi card doesn't stay connected to the network when the PC is off so can't listen for the wake on lan command. Unlike a network cable which is always connected to the network.
Possible you need to give the ifttt app permission to send sms or use communications. Also worth checking the number that the message thinks its being sent to, ie open the unsent message and check the number is correct. I've seen sometimes you need to put in the full international format, not sure why.
Had the same until I tried a few different variations, what worked was making sure that the full international version of my number was entered in the script. Hope this helps.
@@AndysTechLife I have done that and it's now getting to my phone but saying the text failed but when I re-try it sends. When it fails to send it says "not sent, tap to try again" when I to everything works.
No unfortunately not. Technically the Google isn't communicating with the PC at all, just using your phone to send a wake on lan packet. I've seen people work on apps and apis that try to do this, but nothing super usable yet. Amazon will probably beat Google to this as they have a PC version of the Alexa app, but I'll keep you posted.
Haven't found a way to turn off yet with Google. With Alexa there's an app called WolSkill which does both on and off, but for Off you need something to do a Windows shutdown, and, so far, I haven't found anything that works with Google devices.
i dont have google home but only have phone . will it work despite i dont have that circle thingy that turns on when you say something? can turn it on using the wake on lan, when i press wake, but it won't work when i say something such as turn on pc. been really confuse and having a hard time staying up all night figuring this out. would appreciate it if you can responding to me
The steps are theoretically the same. Connect Google assistant to IFTTT, make sure the trigger phrase is 'Exactly' what you plan to say. IFTTT then sends an sms back to your phone which triggers automate which in turn triggers Wake on lan. 1. This is only going to work if your PC and phone are on the same network. Wont work if you're on your mobile network. 2. If your phone is not receiving the SMS start again as this is what triggers the routine. Remember the SMS must also 'exactly' match what Automate is listening for. 3. Check when the SMS arrives that automate is actually triggering the action. It's a very complex setup, but a physical Google device isn't needed, but each step has to be done with exact details or nothing will work. Best of luck!
You need to install IFTTT app first then search for Google through the explore menu in IFTTT and add the voice assistant to your IFTTT account. If this isn't working none of the following steps are going to work or make sense. The whole setup relies on IFTTT.
Might be worth learning a bit about IFTTT from their website and videos first as you need to get IFTTT to listen for the Google voice command, then send an SMS from IFTTT to your own mobile number to trigger. If IFTTT isn't working then the whole thing won't work.
Everything works out but when I try it using the google nest it doesn't do anything to my pc. but turning it on using Work On Lan app works 100% I receive an IFTTT notification saying that the applet worked, and I received all the SMS every time I do it but it doesn't turn on my pc. your help would be highly appreciated :)
Best thing to do is break the routine into steps to confirm where the breaking point is. For me the first couple of times the text message was arriving, but the text didn't match 100% so didn't trigger the rest of the routine. The text in the SMS must match exactly what the trigger is looking for, any difference and even if you receive the SMS it won't trigger the next step. Check for spaces, capital letters or anything that might be not the same. This seems to be the biggest point of failure for people as any capitals or spaces will stop it working. Also, just a reminder you need to be on the same wifi. Hope you get it sorted!
@@AndysTechLife about the IFTTT's applet, should i just leave the messages without the "ingredients" I think this is an update cus i didn't see anything like this in the video
I did everything again from the start. The same thing happens, everything works out. I can turn on my pc using the WOL App but doesn't recognize when i command google ( the IFTTT APLET TO AUTOMATE) to do so. in the automate app there a log but it only says flow beginning SMS received flow beginning SMS received its all the same when i activate it using voice command via google nest.
Seems like a delay in either the triggering or the network. If you said it twice the messages coming in now might be the delayed ones from before. Unfortunately there are several points on this where things can go wrong as neither Google or IFTTT have a simpler way to do this. Its a pity since Amazon have WOL functionality built in. If I was to guess its because the phone is switching from cellular network and WiFi which breaks the routine. Best thing is to do some tests with just getting the SMS and see where the issue is and once you are getting the message every time, then add the WOL trigger.
There's plenty of iOS wake on lan apps, but I don't know what the equivalent of Automate is. If I figure it out I'll let you know, but I suspect this is not going to be as easy on iOS :(
Hey Andy. Seems like my computer is not switching on. I've made sure that WOL is working when i click my pc on the app and followed your instructions carefully. I checked the IFTTT activity status and everything ran and it sent sms to my number. Any ideas?
If the WOL app is working to turn the PC and you're receiving the SMS it sounds like the automate app either isn't reading the sms or not then triggering the WOL app. Just check that the exact text in the sms is the same as what the automate app is looking for, any difference will cause this not to work. If you test the automate routine in the automate app and its working without receiving the SMS thats the most likely reason.
@@AndysTechLife just found out that I've been getting error messages. Meaning my texts weren't sent to me and I think i can't send myself a text message. But if i were to text the number associated "wakeonlan" my computer would turn on
So I had a similar issue when I first tried and put in the full international version of my number, also make sure that ifttt app has permission to access and send sms in the app settings. Hope you get it sorted.
That would be good if they could but I doubt it. It would still need the phone to send the WOL packet across the network. Be great to just have an IFTTT wol skill. Or even better if Google devices just sent the WOL packet themselves as the Alexa devices can.

If you mean for the Network card, make sure you're looking at the wired network card and not the wireless. You may need to update the driver for the card too and be aware that not all cards support wake on lan. Best to Google the make and model of your network card to check exactly what settings you need to change and if it is compatible.
Great video. I've got all the bits installed and set up - however it doesn't seem to trigger the shortcut to wake on lan. If I click WOL and the PC I want to wake, it works, but the automate loops doesn't seem to be starting the WOL app? Is there something I'm missing?

One thing to check though is that the automation in Automate is a loop. So that when it runs the task it goes back to listening for the trigger. You do this by drawing a connection from the end of the automation back to the beginning.
Andy any chance of a video on dual monitor setup, cables required? Dock station? Benefits etc?? Also sometimes I use dual screen tv/laptop... difference monitor as tv or normal monitor. Love the channel
Thanks for the feedback. Good suggestion, let me have a think about this one as there's a lot to think about in terms of setups from graphics cards that can support it, laptop vs pc etc. But definitely a good one for people working from home.
Not sure if you had your answer. I setup mine with my laptop and 2 other pc monitors. It depends whether your motherboard supports. I had my 1 hdmi to 1 monitor, another monitor using USB C TO HDMI to another monitor ( not all USB C ports supports graphic out) . Set display to extend mode. However, if you are referring to other setup like 2 pc inputs like mine. Use KVM switch.

I tried doing this years ago and it's very clunky. the easiest solution I found to home automate turning on your PC on is by using AC power loss in your BIOS to restart your computer and a smart plug to simulate a power loss.
This does work, but I'd be hesitant to constantly kill the power to the PC without shutting down properly. It'll work and probably won't do any harm, but there is a risk of just killing the power using a plug. The plus with this method is that it does do a proper Windows shutdown.
Try: * Making sure the automate applet is ready to listen for an sms. * your phone is on the same WiFi as your PC * you've given the automate app permission to access phone / sms / communications. * once the automation runs it will stop unless you create a loop at the end to go back to waiting for the text message. Hope this helps.

How to connect google asst to iftt? I did create set up for that but when i speak it did nothing initiate ,@@AndysTechLife
Did not even miss a step been doing this for nearly 5 houra
I can turn on my pc using the WOL App but doesn't recognize when i command google ( the IFTTT APLET TO AUTOMATE) to do so. in the automate app there a log but it only says
flow beginning
SMS received
flow beginning
SMS received
its all the same when i activate it using voice command via google nest.
It works only if I say it the second time. Wenn I say "pc on" for the first time I just recive the SMS but nothing happens
And now I am getting messages without saying anything and my pc turns om
Seems like a delay in either the triggering or the network. If you said it twice the messages coming in now might be the delayed ones from before. Unfortunately there are several points on this where things can go wrong as neither Google or IFTTT have a simpler way to do this. Its a pity since Amazon have WOL functionality built in. If I was to guess its because the phone is switching from cellular network and WiFi which breaks the routine. Best thing is to do some tests with just getting the SMS and see where the issue is and once you are getting the message every time, then add the WOL trigger.
we can do it with a Iphone ?
This is so complicated. Couldn't IFTTT do trigger the wake on lan and skip the sms part?
That would be good if they could but I doubt it. It would still need the phone to send the WOL packet across the network. Be great to just have an IFTTT wol skill. Or even better if Google devices just sent the WOL packet themselves as the Alexa devices can.
do you maybe have a ios guide too?

the page "power management" doesnt show up on my pc, how can i fix this problem?
If you mean for the Network card, make sure you're looking at the wired network card and not the wireless. You may need to update the driver for the card too and be aware that not all cards support wake on lan. Best to Google the make and model of your network card to check exactly what settings you need to change and if it is compatible.
Very nice.
And tasker?
How make?
Don't use tasker myself but I'd expect the process is the same, wait for an sms to arrive then trigger the wake on lan app.
Great video. I've got all the bits installed and set up - however it doesn't seem to trigger the shortcut to wake on lan. If I click WOL and the PC I want to wake, it works, but the automate loops doesn't seem to be starting the WOL app? Is there something I'm missing?

What can I do if automate don't want to turn my pc a second time ?
Don't know what the issue is there. Something must have changed in the configuration.
Hello Andy,i did the setup as u told in the video and i can wakeup the pc with the wake on lan app,but i cant activate it with my voice with the google nest,so what am i doing wrong???thx

The plus with this method is that it does do a proper Windows shutdown.
hi
doesnt work :( it send sthe sms but doesnt open
Try:
* Making sure the automate applet is ready to listen for an sms.
* your phone is on the same WiFi as your PC
* you've given the automate app permission to access phone / sms / communications.
* once the automation runs it will stop unless you create a loop at the end to go back to waiting for the text message.
Hope this helps.
Help me not working
Remember this will only work with Lan connections and not WIFI

is this all out of date ? ifttt wont do shit
Think since the last IFTTT api updates this may well not work now. Will try it out. Even still the Nest devices make it very difficult to do wake on lan anyway unfortunately.
your mac addres 78:24:AF:36:DB:32 HULK
thank me later
Wow thanks, didn't see that it was visible! Appreciate it!
2 apps!!! WHY! LOL
Google just not making it easy. Alexa you can just add a WOL skill, but the Nest devices just make it awkward :(
