The elitism in volleyball is absolutely one of the main teams of haikyuu. Though it is never overt or in your face, if you pay attention you can clearly see the impact money and connections have on volleyball: hinata is someone who didn't have the resources to train, karasuno has to ask the community for donations to be able to go to games, etc. Most of the other schools (including aoba johsai and shiratorizawa) are private and their volleyball clubs have a lot of funding. This episode shows just how big of a heart Tanaka has. He may come across as a hot head and not always the brightest, but his fire that is intimidating on the court fuels the warmth for his love for his team and friends.
I love Nohebi's team. We've never seen any team like this where all of them together are trash talking the whole time. It's one of the few Haikyu teams where you actually want them to lose. Not to mention their banter can be very crafty and funny
Agreed 100%. If you play competitive volleyball, you know this is a very common thing. My coach taught us that volleyball is 90% mental game and 10% the rest. Getting into the opponents head, being confident in yourself, just the mental game is a huge part of volley. Yes sportsmanship is important, but the art of mental warfare is a part of any sport - so I agree with you whole heartedly, I feel like Nohebi is one of the most realistic teams in this show. I wish there were more teams like Nohebi. Volleyball is not always butterflies and rainbows. And versing a team like this is so much more fun ^_^, it feels like there is more on the line.. i.e. your pride :)
Although it's realistic it still feels like one of the weakest moments of writing in the show. To final succumb and just have a team that is a bunch of scummy guys. It also manages to still make them reasonable when Kuroo points out that still is a part of the game
That slow-motion toupee, moving like a sea creature in a nature documentary, is one of the greatest things I've ever seen. Edit: I find the Nohebi match so stressful to watch, in a different way to any of the other matches. But it's also really interesting to me that this is the ONLY match so far where things like playing up to the referee, or biased refereeing are even mentioned as a possibility. I don't have any experience of high school volleyball, but in high school sports in general it IS something I'd always seen people think about (and watching professional sports is like 50% complaining about refereeing ...), so it doesn't feel unrealistic, but it does jar with all the other matches we've seen!
It helps that it is an OVA, so the jarring change doesn't really mess up the main flow of the series. Still great to see other dynamics of the sport, and sports in general though. I forgot if it was Lachy or another volleyball player that reacted to this series, but someone mentioned how consistent the line judges are and refs are, like I never seen a bad call in the anime, or an iffy call. So cool to see that little change up
I’m glad you were able to watch the Failing Marks OVA, I had a feeling you would enjoy it ^_^ Hope we can get one of those Ranking every player from HQ S3 videos at some point too! And it’s Land (Nekoma the cats) VS Air (Fukurodani the owls)!! The commercial break was showing Bokuto and Akaashi as the owls there lol! Sadly S4 won’t have the cute serving eyecatch/bumpers anymore… 💔 On the other hand personally S4’s OST is my favorite out of the whole show, you get a small preview in the Tokyo qualifier OVAs and I’m looking forward to you hearing more of those tracks soon!! Love that you also noticed the parallel with Tanaka having an older sister (Saeko) while Yamamoto has a younger one (Akane.) There’s a similar juxtaposition with Lev’s older sis (Alisa) compared to Hinata’s younger one (Natsu) too haha!
31:35 Bokuto's main strenght is lineshot, so it makes sense to force him to do a cross shot. To counter this, he develops that insane sharp cross shot he's famous for "nowadays"
45:54 As you know they called the Karasuno team "the fallen crows" before and there are always crows that appear when an epic shot is going to be made. The reason it's crows its because "karasu" means crows in English. If you follow that logic, "neko" means cat in Japanese, so that's why the Nekoma school is represented by cats and you see Kuroo and Kenma as cats in the half-time. Fukuroo means owl, so the two birds you just saw are Bokuto and some other teammate from Fukurodani school
lmao the confusion with the commercial spacers! So Nekoma are know as cats (neko=cat) the cats are Kenma and Kuroo and fukurodani are owls (fukuro=owl), so the owls flying were Akashi and Bokuto.
and here I completely forgot why I rated the Failing Marks OVA a 10/10... - Saeko. - My favoriete character (Yachi) is in it. - Saeko. - I'm trying my HARDEST to hold in my laughter at 3 AM. the humor is on point. - Haikyuu's slice of life has always been amazing and getting more of it during season 2 (best season) was the cherry on top. - Saeko. I almost cried during her little moment with Tanaka.. letting him "save" his "manhood" early on was so touching
Obligatory recommendation to read the Land v Air part in the manga because of how much got cut for the OVAs. It's especially unfair towards Nohebi since the anime makes them snakes first and players second, which is a shame since they are great players, even without the trash talking. Kuroo even says so himself, so that means something given his rivalry with Daisho. (Chapters 190-206) It was one of the reasons why people were worried about the movie being cut a lot, which unfortunately became true.
I actually kinda like Nohebi. When you're in a sport where you're both physically similiar and capable, the next challenge above that is all mental and emotional, so I like the idea of a challenge where I need to work hard as well as keep my cool against an antagonizing team.
yippee haikyuu!! idk, i love this drawing style more than the previous seasons' (in the new one i think it's mostly noticeable in everyone's faces and hair and how buff some of the characters look), it's closer to the style that manga had by that point, although the quality of animation is another question (but it has it's great moments too!!) 41:30 greatest compliment to akaashi my beloved. 45:54 new mid point thingy, with characters as their team's mascot, the owls are bokuto and akaashi also rip yaku.
You mean the SPLATTER STEP lol Iykyk hahaha "Dude looks difficult to draw", yeah Furudate-sensei found good looking characters difficult to draw, especially Oikawa lol.
Animation changes for OVAs and Season 4 are because of a different animation director and there been some staff changes in studio at time. I think someone left studio or something of that sort. If i had to describe first 3 seasons artstyle in a single word, it would be "efficient". But season 4 animation is more loose, more dynamic, but it also has consistency problems, usaully associated with production issues.
Honestly, these matches are badly adapted for me, they cut a lot, especially the Fukuduradani vs Nekoma, they made it seem like Fukuduradani destroyed Nekoma but they had good strategies, also you get to know a lot of other players, from Fukuduradani aswell Also, the reason why Bokuto isn't in the top 3, like Ushiwaka, is because of his mood swings, when he is fully concentrated he has the same power and skill level as the top Yes, Yaku, nekoma's libero is amazing, again it's more emphasised in the manga. I think Nekoma was with their altern uniforms against Fukuduradani, since they are very similar Another difference with the manga is that Nohebi comes out less assholes, they aren't doing what they are doing out of arrogance, they do it to take advantage of everything they can control
I agree. If I had to be painfully honest, S1-S3 were amazing adaptations, while OAV and S4 (especially the first few episodes) were rather... flat. I don't want to make spoilers but I think they could have made better decisions about what to show and how to do it.
@@k.h.7732 yesss, the first seasons are nearly perfect, they almost leave nothing out, I still would recommend reading from the start because there are some thought process, strategies and reasoning that was of course not in the anime, beside cool extra information. Season 4 is ok, again, they didn't leave much out, but the movie, while good, left tons of amazing moments and I fear what they are going to do in the next because I'm sure that my favourite none karasuno match (lowk my favourite) will be cut out, and i don't know how much of the rest will be out too, but I know it will be soooo much, which is a pity since I seriously love the ending, I find it perfect, buy its not possible if what comes before is a mess
You're not alone in your unhappiness. I'm happy that I read the manga and can appreciate the absolute beauty of the storytelling. But it makes me sad to think of how much anime watchers are missing. And I think I'm gonna cry when the next movie comes out and leaves out so many things 😭
@hollyhahn2399 those are my exact feelings!!! Honestly, I've been going to different reactors and recommending reading the manga because I really want people to appreciate the story at its best, I think I may have gotten annoying now🤣, but I truly love the story 🥲
I teach Jeet Kune Do and the split step is fundamental! Bruce Lee put it in this discipline because of boxing but it's basically used in various sports (epecially in Tennis ofc) ! I love these little details in Haikyuu!
CULTURAL CONTEXT: If in the west natural enemies are cats vs dogs, in Japan it's cats vs snakes. Snakes are seen not just as viciouis but also as pests in japan. Similar to rats. They make gardening more of a pain than it needs to be.
Season 4 is done differently from the past 3 seasons, so be ready for the style change. Also the pandemic was underway during production so... yeah you might wanna temper your expectations a tad bit, it'll still be a really great watch.
AH also, some translation help. Cat - Nekoma Nohebi - Snakes Fukurodani - Owls Itachiyama - Weasles/ferrets (which are seen as cute but also a little fiersome in japan. Think how people think Dingos are harmless but they're actually wild."
I'M SO EXCITED FOR SS4 AHHHAHAHAHAHHA but ngl this nekoma vs fukuradani match was hype af I love how they animated everything so fast unlike when they usually animated karasuno's matches, this is more like the real volleyball, quick and strong game 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The difference between Yaku (Nekoma Libero) and Nishinoya (Karasuno LIbero) is their consistency. Nishinoya is the type of libero who is flashy and can do insane digs, but lacks in some areas, while Yaku is a libero who is just consistent all around.
The animation isnt all that great but BUT the facial expressions we are getting....ahahahahahha Kenma's face when the coach tells him to deal with Lev, Akashi's face whenever he has to deal with Bokuto, Bokuto being a whole photobook all by himself!!! hahahahaha i can tolerate this animation if this is what we are getting
I can say from my experience, here in Germany, there is a lot of good sportsmanship, but Volleyball is bigger in Germany than in Australia to be fair (still relatively small compared to some other countries but yeah).
Damn, I was always the kid people tended to look at so sometimes I would just fuck with them and grab random things from my bag and pretend to use them. Was always so hard not to start giggling when someone would follow suit and then look at the text confused af :D The reason they use the lines like that is that the correct way to write in Japanese is top down, left to right. I dont know if this is the norm but it seems logical to do this. Nohebi - they are snake based since "hebi" means snake. He means that Lev takes too long - thats the joke :D you and Lev share a braincell xDD You might be recognizing Itachiyama from a jersey shot. Back in S2 when Kuroo talks about the top 3 aces, he mentions that one of them is from Kanto. The guy has Itachyama jersey. So it seems that there are two top 5 aces in Tokyo - pretty brutal if you ask me. Ofc Bokuto is focused - he is versing Nekoma in official match after all :P Visuals sometimes take something on a dive - its not too noticeable unless u pause it. Seems like someone with low-budget/effort/skill was making some of the frames and those are the ones people often complain about when it comes to the quality. Otherwise I would say the art is better since its more like the manga. I think that the reason why Nekoma doesnt have Yaku on the line is that any Nekoma player is good enough at recieving to handle such a narrow placement safely so they have Yaku on the recieve for those nasty sharp crosses - idk tho. "I am gonna be happy regardless cuz I like both teams" - pulling Reverse Oikawa here are we? :D The cats and owls is a new break - we dont get any more spikes unfortunately but this one is funny too. You recognized the cats but the owls are Bokuto and Akashi I actually kinda like Nohebi. But I will talk about why in the next one. To reclarify about the seeding. Tokyo gets three slots in spring tournaments - two by population one bonus for venue host - since they are always the host for Spring, they always have it. Thats also why we get this match - they normally dont do games for third and stuff but since here it decides who goes further, the game happens. Naming window: Suguru Daisho - This one can be translated as Superiour General but actually the Daisho in his name comes from "aodashio" which is the Japanese rat snake. Every member of Nohebi has a name based on a different kind of snake. Not sure if I ever did Yaku so here he is: Yaku Morisuke - The direct translation would be "long night" "protector/guardian" so basically a cat that watches over you during the night - it is probably supposed to represent his nature as a libero. The cat hidden in his name is actually a lizard - Cat Claw Gecko. The reason he has it is that it actually has a cat in the name :D Anyways super hyped for next one since its a banger :3
Not sure if someone explained it already before, but the team names are related to animals. The "hebi" ni Nohebi means "snake", that's why their players are like that.
I don't know if the tanaka and saeko interaction was canon or anime only but I kinda wished they put that in the main story. It really adds layers to tanaka and his sisters character but some people didn't watch the OVA and it makes me kinda sad
Dunno if some1 alr said this, but itachiyama is the favorite to win nationals sakusa n komori are rilly the only somewhat important characters on there tho, we nvr rilly get to see them play (no.1 hitter and no.1 libero according to kuroo and monthly volleyball) im also pretty sure it was mentioned in season one that ever since they lost to itachiyama on the third round theyve never made it to nationals since !!slight spoilers!! kageyama meets the two of em during the national youth training (s4) and in the manga it was mentioned karasuno lost to itachiyama and placed 4th in the nation 2 years post all of this

As others already said, Nohebi is a bit misrepresented in the anime unfortunately, especially their captain. And yes, season 4 had some trouble production-wise (changed the studio iirc, done during the pandemic, etc) so the animation is not that great and can be a little sloppy at times, but personally I liked how they drew the characters because the style was closer to the manga's! (rip Yaku gone too soon)
The nohebi match is stressful to watch because how REAL that felt. Versing a team that talk shit so well and is decent at the game is a chore. Lachlan not fiending over new female character in the end?? Character growth from our boi???
We were spoiled with the first three seasons with outstanding animation that when season 4 came along it felt lacking. Don't get me wrong, the change in art by the author/artist is fantastic especially in manga form and I really like it, but when adapting it into anime it has this weird feeling to it that I can't put my finger on. I don't know if it's the art style change, a change in studio, Covid, Animation Director, or all of the above. P.S. pls do tell if you know at least a reason. Edit: Fun fact, Hinata's Voice Actor is one of the few VA that is good at English because he grew up in the US
The animation has changed since season 4. Therefore, I think you will be disappointed. Perhaps because the drawing is closer to the original manga, the movements are no longer smooth. I think you will feel uncomfortable at first. However, there are reasons for these failures, including the fact that they were produced during the coronavirus pandemic and some parts were outsourced overseas. With that in mind, please take a warm look. From Japan

6:27 Hinata got too excited and learned defenestration instead of defense
absolutely love land vs air ova. bokuto is still easily my favroite character. atsumu probably a close second.
lmao the confusion with the commercial spacers! So Nekoma are know as cats (neko=cat) the cats are Kenma and Kuroo and fukurodani are owls (fukuro=owl), so the owls flying were Akashi and Bokuto.
oh i can already tell you're going to LOVE season 4
and here I completely forgot why I rated the Failing Marks OVA a 10/10...
It was such a good little episode to show more of our favs
Obligatory recommendation to read the Land v Air part in the manga because of how much got cut for the OVAs. It's especially unfair towards Nohebi since the anime makes them snakes first and players second, which is a shame since they are great players, even without the trash talking. Kuroo even says so himself, so that means something given his rivalry with Daisho.
(Chapters 190-206)
It was one of the reasons why people were worried about the movie being cut a lot, which unfortunately became true.
Thank you for pointing that out for me! I'll have to check it out!
I actually kinda like Nohebi. When you're in a sport where you're both physically similiar and capable, the next challenge above that is all mental and emotional, so I like the idea of a challenge where I need to work hard as well as keep my cool against an antagonizing team.
I like your take on this!
yippee haikyuu!!
idk, i love this drawing style more than the previous seasons' (in the new one i think it's mostly noticeable in everyone's faces and hair and how buff some of the characters look), it's closer to the style that manga had by that point, although the quality of animation is another question (but it has it's great moments too!!)
41:30 greatest compliment to akaashi my beloved.
45:54 new mid point thingy, with characters as their team's mascot, the owls are bokuto and akaashi
also rip yaku.
You mean the SPLATTER STEP lol Iykyk hahaha
"Dude looks difficult to draw", yeah Furudate-sensei found good looking characters difficult to draw, especially Oikawa lol.
30:25 Just wait the "splatter step" is coming up soon 😹
When he did a whole minute to explain it..... I'm like stopping myself to comment about it. Can't believe he caught that.
So it was splatter step. No wonder I heard it somewhere before 👀🤭
Animation changes for OVAs and Season 4 are because of a different animation director and there been some staff changes in studio at time. I think someone left studio or something of that sort.
If i had to describe first 3 seasons artstyle in a single word, it would be "efficient". But season 4 animation is more loose, more dynamic, but it also has consistency problems, usaully associated with production issues.
yeah, s4 came out during peak covid iirc, and a lot of the animation (especially in the second half) was outsourced.
S4 Saeko is on the horizon!!
Oh god no
He is not ready for S4 Saeko.
Honestly, these matches are badly adapted for me, they cut a lot, especially the Fukuduradani vs Nekoma, they made it seem like Fukuduradani destroyed Nekoma but they had good strategies, also you get to know a lot of other players, from Fukuduradani aswell
Also, the reason why Bokuto isn't in the top 3, like Ushiwaka, is because of his mood swings, when he is fully concentrated he has the same power and skill level as the top
Yes, Yaku, nekoma's libero is amazing, again it's more emphasised in the manga. I think Nekoma was with their altern uniforms against Fukuduradani, since they are very similar
Another difference with the manga is that Nohebi comes out less assholes, they aren't doing what they are doing out of arrogance, they do it to take advantage of everything they can control
I'm not very happy, don't know if it shows 😅
You're not alone in your unhappiness.
It's amazing how we can learn new thing from you. "Split step" is an amazing technique. Thank you.
I'm now part of the Waiting Gang. Looking forward to this after enjoying your reactions to the first three seasons!
Nohebi for me is like Harvey Specter from Suits. They play the man, not the game.
TRUE THAT! That’s such a cool way to look at it
BRO dosent know we know how good and important split step is
I teach Jeet Kune Do and the split step is fundamental!
They make gardening more of a pain than it needs to be.
omg im so glad you notice the split step😁😁
Season 4 is done differently from the past 3 seasons, so be ready for the style change. Also the pandemic was underway during production so... yeah you might wanna temper your expectations a tad bit, it'll still be a really great watch.
The Bokuto sequence is SO GOOD!! The Way of the Ace!!
I loved it so much!
I'm so happy you watched the first OVA! 🤣🤣 hahahaha most reactors skip it 😭
AH also, some translation help.
Cat - Nekoma
Nohebi - Snakes
Fukurodani - Owls
Itachiyama - Weasles/ferrets (which are seen as cute but also a little fiersome in japan. Think how people think Dingos are harmless but they're actually wild."
Looking swole Lachy!
Trying to build up like youuu 🎉
perfect timing, now i have a vid to watch while eating :)
9:36 Lachy full on splitting with Tsukki 😂
I'M SO EXCITED FOR SS4 AHHHAHAHAHAHHA but ngl this nekoma vs fukuradani match was hype af I love how they animated everything so fast unlike when they usually animated karasuno's matches, this is more like the real volleyball, quick and strong game 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
THE DETAILS MANNN
It’s Kenma and Kuroo cats!
and Bokuto and Akaashi owls!
It’s cute isn’t it 😍
The difference between Yaku (Nekoma Libero) and Nishinoya (Karasuno LIbero) is their consistency.
6:45 "the second hand embarrassment im getting from this is diabolical" my dude you will not survive the beginning of season 4
Haikyuu training t-shirts actually look so much cooler than the jerseys! I've bought some of Bokuto's and Nishinoya's 😅
I can say from my experience, here in Germany, there is a lot of good sportsmanship, but Volleyball is bigger in Germany than in Australia to be fair (still relatively small compared to some other countries but yeah).
It's so wild how they had Yaku in crutches for all of season 4.
Damn, I was always the kid people tended to look at so sometimes I would just fuck with them and grab random things from my bag and pretend to use them. Was always so hard not to start giggling when someone would follow suit and then look at the text confused af :D
The reason they use the lines like that is that the correct way to write in Japanese is top down, left to right. I dont know if this is the norm but it seems logical to do this.
Nohebi - they are snake based since "hebi" means snake.
He means that Lev takes too long - thats the joke :D you and Lev share a braincell xDD
You might be recognizing Itachiyama from a jersey shot. Back in S2 when Kuroo talks about the top 3 aces, he mentions that one of them is from Kanto. The guy has Itachyama jersey. So it seems that there are two top 5 aces in Tokyo - pretty brutal if you ask me.
Ofc Bokuto is focused - he is versing Nekoma in official match after all :P
Visuals sometimes take something on a dive - its not too noticeable unless u pause it.
The cats and owls is a new break - we dont get any more spikes unfortunately but this one is funny too. You recognized the cats but the owls are Bokuto and Akashi
I actually kinda like Nohebi.
Naming window:
Suguru Daisho - This one can be translated as Superiour General but actually the Daisho in his name comes from "aodashio" which is the Japanese rat snake.
The reason he has it is that it actually has a cat in the name :D
Anyways super hyped for next one since its a banger :3
Not sure if someone explained it already before, but the team names are related to animals. The "hebi" ni Nohebi means "snake", that's why their players are like that.
this is what I like about your content, noticing every defail especially how the animation level went down... even in season 4..
YAY YAY YAY OVA!!!
12:19 when people start using calculators and shit but you showed up to exam with just a pen (me)
I don't know if the tanaka and saeko interaction was canon or anime only but I kinda wished they put that in the main story. It really adds layers to tanaka and his sisters character but some people didn't watch the OVA and it makes me kinda sad
Dunno if some1 alr said this, but itachiyama is the favorite to win nationals
sakusa n komori are rilly the only somewhat important characters on there tho, we nvr rilly get to see them play (no.1 hitter and no.1 libero according to kuroo and monthly volleyball)
im also pretty sure it was mentioned in season one that ever since they lost to itachiyama on the third round theyve never made it to nationals since
!!slight spoilers!!
kageyama meets the two of em during the national youth training (s4) and in the manga it was mentioned karasuno lost to itachiyama and placed 4th in the nation 2 years post all of this
Splatter step? never heard of it.
I like that stretch too Lachy.
Banned
Bokuto is the goat
Yoooo the lad is *sniffing* at 7k subscribers
Lachy: "Saeko has no power over me, I can finally leave"
Saeko: exists
Lachy: "I'M BACK IN THE FUCKING BUILDING"
Your face goes soooo red in those secondhand embarrassment moments, incredibly relatable lmao 🤣
RIP Yaku-chan, you will be missed 😔
Edit: I fuckin love Bokuto that's my dumbass himbo!!!
BRO YOU'RE NOT READY FOR SEASON 4 BRO I SWEARRRRRRRR
HAHAHAH I'm loyal...
Edit: Fun fact, Hinata's Voice Actor is one of the few VA that is good at English because he grew up in the US
16:36 the answer to that question is yes
Guy Sensei = Yaku Senpai
TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS SPLIT STEP LACHY...or was it splatter step?
Can we talk about how he didn't say levs name right once.
big sad
OMG CAN YOU SING?!
Lachy just curious. Do you remember me?
Hey bro! Appreciate you being here still!
From Japan
i've finally caught up with your reactions for the first time in months and i'm SO happy you grew to love oikawa and tsukishima!! you're definitely gonna love the training arc in season 4. i can't wait to see your thoughts on it and on the other teams (specially inarizaki with the twins and kita san 😁😁😁). i love your videos. your positivity and understanding of people always shine through 🫂
split step?? i guess you learn something new every day, i'll be taking notes 🫡
someone from karasuno should be taking those notes!
