The reason you thought they're black initially is because they're from Philly and were really influenced by the black soul music scene in Philly that was going on in the 60s. In fact when they got inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, Daryl Hall was complaining in his acceptance speech that none of those old school black soul singers had ever been recognized by the hall of fame voters.
