Hall and Kate's both grew up listening to Detroit soul. That's where they got their influences from and their love of soul. As Daryl hall ONCE said SOUL HAS NO COLOUR

Cool. But why has the Soul sound always been in the black culture for generations? Nonblacks called soul, black folks sound, and music. Flows naturally in black culture, from the kids on up. It never been nothing to step outside in the black neighborhood and hear a kid or adult singing soul songs like professionals. Or pass by black Baptist churches on Sunday morning. Soulful sounds! When most nonblacks had to try and learn it . And In some ways mimick it . Tina Marie was bad ass! Love her soulful voice, even today. Her influence was Aretha Franklin.

My late sister and I would "act out" this song as kids. We pretended to play trombones, for some reason, on the repeating saxophone part

Well...after watching a couple of your reactions to Hall and Oates, I just joined your "family". Love your takes and side comments. Keep them coming - I can always use another breath of fresh air (especially these days). Darryl has stated that he hates the term people have used about them - "Blue-eyed Soul", but it fits their look and sound perfectly. Their catalog is immense, and he is still kicking ass at 70 or so - you MUST check out "Live from Darryl's house". That will be another binge-watching rabbit hole to jump down into. Like Lay's potato chips....bet you can't have just one.

"Detroit is where most of the Soul music came from."
    Look into Lieber & Stoller.
They were two Jews from the East Coast that wrote the majority of hits that came from MoTown in the 50's and 60's. Dozens of singers owe their success to that duo.

Hall & Oates are both in their early 70's now. They were very much influenced by Detroit Motown, Jazz and Blues which is why a lot of older generation (Baby Boomer, Generation X) Black people like them. That's why you probably keep stumbling across their songs and thinking "I thought this song was sung by a Black group", etc.

First time I watched (two of them actually) your reaction videos and at first I was at a lost with respect to what you would bring to the table, but after I watched you reacting for a couple of minutes it became very apparent that "you know some stuff" as you say and that stuff makes your reaction video one of the best I ever watched. Congratulations, as I just subscribed and am eager to see more. Of course, the fact that you are reacting to Hall and Oates who are one of my favorite groups of all time didn't hurt either.
Anyway, I have a request. I request that you react to a cover of "Creep" by Postmodern Jukebox featuring Haley Reinhart. As they put a very different spin on this very famous song. Plus, Haley Reinhart has one of the most instantly likeable voices I have ever heard. As I would just like to see how someone like you who "knows some stuff" would react to that particular song.
Moreover, the video currently has about 87 million views so they must be doing something right. Anyway, please find the link to it below. I promise, you will not be disappointed.
    th-cam.com/video/m3lF2qEA2cw/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=PostmodernJukebox
Oh, I just saw you guys are fans of Bill Burr. Well, interesting, Haley Reinhart, the vocalist on "Creep" is also a voice actress who just happens to voice the character of the little red-headed Bill Burr on F is for Family. Hmm...small world.

My favorite Hall and Oates song. The reason you thought they're black initially is because they're from Philly and were really influenced by the black soul music scene in Philly that was going on in the 60s. In fact when they got inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, Daryl Hall was complaining in his acceptance speech that none of those old school black soul singers had ever been recognized by the hall of fame voters.
