A church that Gordon mentioned in his Edmund Fitzgerald song rang it's bell after he passed away 30 times. Once for each crew member on the Fitzgerald, and a final time for Gordon Lightfoot himself. A very humbling tribute to him. His famous song made millions aware of the Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy, and also made Lightfoot a celebrity. Rip Gordon Lightfoot.

I was in the Coast Guard stationed at Base Soo on Nov 10th 1975. I had just gotten off Watch at Lookout Station 4, speed checking ships on the St. Marie’s River. I walked into the radio room to end my watch. As I did, Ensign Havermill, Officer of the Day, was at the radio counsel with the radioman. As I walked in he turned to me and said, Maki, I think we just lost the Fitzgerald. I was assigned the next day to Yards and Docks to start logging the debris as search and rescue was being conducted. I was then going to be a spotter from a helicopter the but the search was called off.
The weight of what happened was heavy on the Base. It made me sick. We trained and existed to rescue distressed mariners. This was a disaster where all we could do was pick up the pieces. A time I will never forget.
I still play Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald at open mic’s. It says it all. RIP Gordon as the final page turns.

This was my first good paying job in the spring throughout the summer of 1977 only 2 years after the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. We sailed over the same waters on a nearly identical ship called the SS Wilfred Sykes following the same path as the Edmund Fitzgerald gone, only 2 years later. As a merchant Marine I could not help feeling emotional sailing right over where the Fitz went down in Lake Superior where 29 souls were lost. Around that same time was when I heard Gordon Lightfoot sing the Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald.

I was only 7 months old when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. I heard this song growing up, as my father was a former Navy Sailor. Maybe this is where my love for all things Canadian began. But when they actually found her, my heart broke for those crewmen and the families left behind. I would go to my favorite bar and they had this song on the jukebox, and something just said play it. So, I did and my buddy who was the bartender asked me why did I play this song. I said something in it makes me truly feel like I was there. Jay Bird said, I was born and raised in Buffalo, NY and my uncle was on that ship. I was a Navy Sailor. Like your dad. Please remember us. The ones left behind.

Gordon Lightfoot's most iconic song in an extremely prolific and talented career is a six-minute ballad about a shipwreck. You might expect that in 1876, but in 1976? What?

Superior is so big that it’s effectively an inland sea, the Ojibwe name “Gitche Gumee” literally means “Great Sea.” When a bad storm sets in it stirs up the water in just the same way that one over the ocean would, there are regular waves of 20 feet in height, some of over 30 feet have been recorded.

Don’t let the word “lake” fool you for a second. The Great Lakes are basically inland seas and are not to be trifled with.
They can easily be as dangerous as the oceans.

Gordon Lightfoot didn’t just write this song off the cuff. He researched and studied the tragic happening. He put it in words and music with a mastery and precision no one else could do. There is no singer, songwriter that can seemingly put you on that freighter in that storm like that.

❤ that was a wonderful tribute to Gordon for the church to honor him in the manner this song has always been a favorite of mine because the lyrics make me think Gordon was aboard the vessel to write the words of the song and he donated the money the song earned to the families of those who lost their loved ones aboard the Edmund fritzgerald RIP Gordon and thank you for this awesome song song and the music arrangement is amazing

I had heard on one of the many documentaries that bodies have been found inside the wreckage, but any photos that may exist would not be released, nor should they, as the wreck is a grave site and I feel it should remain further undisturbed. They know where the ship is, they know it broke apart….leave it alone and let the families have some closure.

I think that it is crazy to think that if you stood the Edmund Fitzgerald on it's nose from the area in which it sank and landed in, it's other end in smooth waters would stick out of the water by about 200 feet. It was a 700 and some foot ship in length and it sunk in only 500 and some feet in water.

A college friend has pictures of the "Fitz" while in the Soo Locks. 12 men of the crew are seen on the decks watching the people on the docks. Imagine these men, Rob photo'd are now gone. How surreal. Been to the Soo Locks a year after that happened. Hard to think men are trapped in a freighter that passed through the very Lock I was seeing.
