This film wasn't warmly received when it first came out... but the true test of a good film is how it ages and how many times you can watch it again... and again... and again... and this has proven to be a very good film. I feel very nostalgic watching this trailer. I can't believe how clear it is.
It was a lot harder doing this movie than it was doing "Star Wars". Paramount wanted this in time for Christmas, but it would have been better if they had waited until a 1980 release date. They were terrified of The "Empire Strikes Back".
Star Trek, with the original crew, is the most poweful friendship story. The deep connection between Kirk, Spock and McCoy, explains it.
Oh look! The Real Enterprise! Damn I miss this ship.
Only one way to make this better. Release it into the theater! :-)
I saw somewhere that they are! I hope it will be in one near me. I'd love to see it bigger and better. Every time I get a bigger TV I have to watch this.

They did, It was glorious! Saw it in Dolby atmos. They even played the overture before the film started. I was in awe with how good it looked. The effects look just as good as anything being made today, they nailed the restoration. The sound was incredible too

I was just 7 when I first saw it in the cinema. It was epic then and still one of my favourite movies
The motion picture was my first movie going experience at the age of 5 I guess? (Assuming it was showing in theaters and Nova Scotia in 79) I remember happily watching TOS episode The City on the edge of Forever at my grandma's my dad tearing away from the TV early cuz we had to go to catch the matinee of TMP. Of the movie I remember the deep tonal notes of the Klingon encounter and I remember my dad trying to explain vejur to me on the way home

Oh, man. Finally got to see this in the theater tonight and it is amazing. Go and see it in your local theater if you can. Well, worth it.

Watched it on Paramount+ via Amazon Prime this weekend. I was blown away by the visual improvements. Didn’t love when V’ger added the “bridge” from the saucer section to itself because the scale seemed off, but other than that it was amazing!

I've been waiting for this ever since the directors cut came out on DVD, it is probably one of the best examples of a directors cut improving the original without making undue changes to the content of the film itself. This full remaster / restoration looks even better, I know what I will be doing on the 5th!

There's slight differences in color between the all video formats and the original theatrical release in 79, the color was more saturated then, especially the klingon sequence.

My all time favorite Star Trek movie. Hopefully it will finally get the respect it deserves.
I have watched this film every day since they released it on Paramount+. It is the reason I signed up for it. This is film is a great example of why I fell in love with SF.
@@trhansen3244 it would be the only reason I would sign up to Paramount+ too but I'm trying to hold off until the disc release cause I have a theater room with high end audio video gear and 100 inch screen that's not set up for streaming. I'm trying desperately not to give in but I think might cave in any moment now lol.
Enterprise looks stunning. best Star Trek movie & my favourite Enterprise.i missed out on the movie when it came out in the 70's as i was only 6 or 7. this is going to make up for missing out. can't wait
tbh from all enterprise versions the one i fell in love with was the one from movies 1-6 :) it just looked best to me

This is a dream come true -- Finally a proper UHD remaster!!! ST:TMP is one of my favorite all-time films. The soundtrack is without question my #1 favorite (I playback the 20th Anniversary Edition in full, several times per year, just for my therapy.) I _really_ _really_ hope they proceed with the 4K UHD Blu-ray, with full Atmos uncompressed quality. It _will_ be mine!

I have been waiting for this for so long. It’s one of my all time favourite films and in my opinion one of the greatest science fiction films of all time.
Hope they do this with all the other movies. It be amazing to own all the film's restored, enhanced maybe extended with any scenes originally not in the film's and in 4k.

ST V's visual effects seriously need a overhaul. Weakest of the series in my view...
This is DEFINITELY the best thing going forward. Thinking of rebooting a movie? DON'T. Just Remaster it with AI Upscaling and redoing all the effects and CGI using today's tech and knowledge! That's all you need to do. So, on that note... PLEASE REMASTER SUPERMAN 1 & 2 !!! PLEASEEEEEEEEE.

So this is another redux? I mean I bought about four-five versions of this during the Laserdisc era, then I bought Robert Wise's "completion"/Director's cut on DVD around 2001-2002 but this one's is strictly on Paramount+ or is headed for a general release? I should dig around the 'scene to see of its on file sharing or torrent, like I've already paid about $350 on the "hard copy" versions over the decades, so I've paid my dues. {Did the same for Star Wars, CLV & CAV -Letterboxed and Pan 'n Scan and DVD up to 2011}
I hope the overture won't be cut!
OMG, this looks amazing! I can't wait! I purchased the OG UHD box set the moment it was released, but this preview looks even better! Watching the shots of the refit Enterprise are literally like being in the room with the model, as close as we'll ever come.
I watched this as a kid when it first came out. Does anyone else feel that when we first saw Vger, you really didn’t grasp what it looked like, and seeing it now, presented as just another ginormous ship, it kind of takes something away? Perhaps it’s just me, but I think I prefer it as some hard to understand cloud-like construct as it was originally presented.
I haven't seen the directors cut. So, is that ship hovering over earth supposed to be Vger? I would agree with you if that is the case

@@dereklarner6298 If you watched the DVD version, you'd know it's not a full immediate reveal. They still keep the you don't get to see much of it approach, but then later on you were supposed to see the whole thing, but you never did until the DVD version. I'm pretty sure this is the same thing here except the DVD models needed some work and clearly they did the work here.

You may very well be right; my point remain unchanged in so far as the way it was originally presented still works for me better than the so called ‘improved’ version. Those who like this newer version better are welcome to do so.
I really disliked the Jarr Jarr Abrams movies where the Enterprise is being built like a moronic skyscraper on the GROUND.
I was much more fascinated with the thought of the Enterprise being so big that it had to be built in SPACE.
This stunning 4K video reminds me of the magic I felt when I first saw this movie in the theaters.

OK but for the the Director's Edition, they need to make the space dock scene at least four hours long. I should be able to do my taxes, run a marathon, deliver a baby, and still come back to see Kirk and Scotty gawking at the Enterprise from hitherto unimaginable angles.

Woah 4k looks really crisp
I was 9 when this movie came out. Yes, it doesn't bounce along like ST2 or 4, but it has something they don't - awe. This movie made space vast and huge and inexplicable, and that made a big impact on me - more than the other options in the cinema for the young SF fan (Star Wars, Galactica).
I was 12 when this came out and saw the first screening in London. Now . . . . so many years later, I'm still watching it. And now as I watch the original series of films I understand Kirk's fears of growing old and redundant which runs through his story arc.
I'm holding out for the Deluxe Super-Sonic, XUHD, 32k, Director's Cut! Should be phenomenal!
The real Star Trek. I need it and the rest of the films before Alex Kurtzman's dark times... a time when Star Trek was Star Trek, no the actual subproduct.
Real Star Trek ended with the end of Enterprise. The movie reboots were ok but weren't really Star Trek.
STD and Picard are absolute trash.
@@WillCamx Yes, with the arrival of dark times from the hands of Jar Jar Abrams and his minion Alex Kurtzman, star trek isn't Star Trek. The Orville is much closer to the spirit of Star Trek, which they misqualify as "star trek".

In my opinion, the only genuine attempt at a 'Star Trek Movie' - as opposed to a very expensive TV episode.....
The friendship between Kirk and Zulu is heartwarming.
Looks stunning. Must be 30 year or more since I last saw it. Did see in the cinema when it came out and it looked good then. Might watch the original version first to get the full benefit!

See in 1980, in my country, good times!
So I saw this gem on the big screen yesterday at a local theater/via Fathom Events and I felt like the picture quality wasn't what I witnessed on streaming a month ago and more importantly the sound just didn't seem to pack the same punch. This makes me want the 4k blu ray much sooner as it seems to be a crap-shoot as to whether or not your local cinema can exhibit these classics properly.

Sorry, but it's only when you see this level of hand painted / real model / analogue special effects (Digitally enhanced) is MILES BETTER than the 100% digital shit we see in modern sci-fi. Just look at it. Just look how REAL it all seems.

One thing I never noticed before is the fact that they forgot to put the supplemental/auxiliary deflector emitters on the front of the saucer section.

This should be rereleased in theaters in 3D. The 4K looks stunning. Imagine seeing this on the big screen in 3D.

Hat mich damals sehr verwundert das nur die Kinofassung auf Blu Ray veröffentlichte und nicht die Director's Edition.
Leider hatte Paramount 2001 die neuen Effektsequenzen nur in Standardauflösung erstellen lassen. Was ziemlich kurzsichtig war, stand das Medium Blu-ray doch bereits in den Startlöchern. Jetzt haben die endlich nachgebessert und vor allem noch weitere Szenen hinzugefügt. Was synchrontechnisch allerdings einen ziemlichen Fleckenteppich verursachen sollte, immerhin enthielt die Director's Edition ja zusätzlich zur Original-Kinosynchro Szenen, die 2001 überwiegend mit anderen Sprechern eingesprochen wurde, und jetzt sind die nächsten Sprecherwechsel wahrscheinlich.
@@BjoernarEricSven Mist das mit der Standard Auflösung hatte ich vergessen, war echt ein taktischer Fehlzug gewesen. Glaube, die neuen Szenen gab es schon vor der Director's Edition auf der letzten VHS Veröffentlichung.

Ja, viele der Szenen gab es schon in verschiedenen alternativen Schnittfassungen. Mit der Director's Edition lagen die aber erstmals synchronisiert vor. Für die 4k-Director's-Edition haben die jetzt noch weitere Szenen hinzugefügt, deren Originalton man seinerzeit für verschollen hielt.

I watched this last night. It was very good (best version yet) but some effects could have used some more cleaning up. There is one shot of the D7s from the back that just looks bad.

There is a compositing problem I didn't noticed until I watched it on my 65" TV for the first time. When they fly around the enterprise in one of the shots you can see earth through the nacelle. I would really love it if they fixed that, but I don't think they can unless they did CGI for it, and last time they generally didn't want to CGI any of the "finished" shots. Maybe the could CGI the nacelle? lol Either way this looks amazing.
I always heard that Paramount demanded a Christmas 1979 release of the film when it originally wasn't supposed to be done until later in 1980 (they probably wanted to get it in the cinemas before Star Wars Empire Strikes Back). As a result a lot of the effects in the original movie look half finished or have a lot of mistakes in them.
Another thing I remember is rigging being visible in some of the Enterprise flyby shots, like the matting wasn't properly done. I hope this edition cleans some of those mistakes up.
@@Felamine I don't remember the rigging, but the matte definitely had flaws. The part I mentioned wasn't the only part. There were others, but it was by far the most obvious. One nice thing about being in dry dock is I may have seen the rigging and dismissed it as part of the dry dock.
They didn't fix any of the compositing issues. The Klingon ships, the space station, etc. all still look like crap, just in 4K.
@@Felamine according to documentary The Center Seat, Paramount's original visual effects company couldn't deliver, so the fx were being shot only days before theatrical release. The studio was under contract to deliver to the cinemas, so they said "we don't care if there are labels where the effects should be, we cannot miss our premiere date"
