    Wow. Baby Manatee, totally cute getting bottle nearly the same size as he or she. Eating and p00ping machine from birth. The Giant Otters were beautiful, but yeah so fast, strong and chaotic and because of that sort of disturbing. Plus their uncanny resemblance to a supple human being is also disturbing. Beautiful, intriguing and disturbing.

    • @solarcupid2583

    • @DUKE_of_RAMBLE
      @DUKE_of_RAMBLE 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +44

      Yea, as Solar pointed out, I was about to say that they have to legitimately be fierce given they cohabitate with the likes of jaguars and multiple species of caiman!
      Which I figure at some point in history, the multiple piranha species also must've played a part in natural selection, leading to only the biggest otters surviving. _(some species get to be multiple pounds in size, not like the tiny pet store ones we see)_
      Our NA counterparts would no doubt become fish food in those waters lol

    It’s funny that Maya mentions being sacred of the giant river otters. In the Amazon survivorman episode, one of the waorani guides told Les to stay away from the giant river otters, citing that other than a jaguar they may be the most dangerous thing you run into

      Well, the natives call the giant otters "river jaguar", so yeah, they are indeed dangerous. Just to put things into perspective of their game, they usually feed on anacondas and caymans, which is fair to say not many other species are capable of doing.

    The ant in the start of the video is a Saúva or leaf-cutter ant. They are very common in most of Brazil. You often see perfect little trails in the ground of fields or forests made by them. They are farmers, using the vegetation that they gather to feed the fungus in their colonies, which is their actual food.
    Also, the winged male is called Tanajura and it's butt is a delicacy, often cooked with rice or farofa, a coarse flour made from cassava

    My brain:
    "How do you bottle feed Manta Rays?"

    • @chrisgullett4332
      @chrisgullett4332 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You would not bottle feed a manta ray, because it is not a mammal. Only mammals breastfeed. Whales, dolphins, otters etc all breastfeed, because they're mammals. Yes that is correct, whales and dolphins do breastfeed. Fish do not breastfeed, marine mammals do. Polar bears and otters are also marine animals. Polar bears and otters are the only two marine mammals that are usually born on land, but spend most of their time in water. Yes a polar bear is a marine mammal, not a land mammal. Polar bears are not like other bears. Other bears are land mammals and eat very little meat, polar bears are marine mammals and eat only meat. You did read that correctly, bears besides polar bears eat very little meat. Bears eat around 5% meat, and 95% fruit and insects. They eat so little meat that they just barely meet the requirements to be classified as omnivores. Bears mostly eat fruit and plants, and they only eat meat to fatten up for hibernation. The average bear eats like 30 thousand berries per day, and will only eat meat during a small period of the year.

    13:25 you're naturally gifted with survival instincts. These are cool but they are dangerous as FUCK. They are unreally strong, aggressive pack hunters. They basically have no natural predators living in the AMAZON, thats how nasty these fellas are. A child once fell into a zoo enclosure of them in my city, Belo Horizonte. A firefighter jumped and saved the kid cause he knew, sadly he did not make it. When I went north to fish I was taught that these fellas is why you can't go in the water. Not piranhas, not gators. Manatees are awesome. And, so are otters. Funny that as you were talking about how big and scary they are at the start, I was thinking how they could almost be compared to big cats, and then you said something about a video of those otters scaring and chasing away jaguars. Makes sense. Those things are huge, and thick, and JACKED. I wouldn't want to come across one in the wild, either. And, I think otters are some of the cutest animals in the world.

    This might be a silly note but helpful for the future. When talking to someone who speaks another language and having someone translate for you, talk to the person you’re having the conversation with instead of to the translator! It doesn’t feel as natural at first, since the person you’re ultimately comprehending is the translator, but they’re not who you’re really trying to talk to, they’re just your go-between. So for example, instead of saying to your translator, “can you ask him [blank]?” You would direct your question to the person directly, then the translator would repeat you. This is *not* an insult in any way, I promise! Just something to remember for your future conservation travels

    My uncle was the director of IMPA until 2020, and that place is amazing! Previously, it was open to the public for visits, like a zoo. But after the pandemic, the government stopped investing in the institution, and today it operates more like an NGO solely to preserve these cutest animals

    Oh my god Maya! I've been here! We did a 3 week biodiversity research trip during my 3rd year of Zoology! I got to spend days in the dry specimen rooms, and got to bottle feed these Manatees!!! Its so crazy seeing you go to INPA, if Dr. Mario hoft is still there, he was the senior ornithologist who ended up coming along with us to stay in Reserva Ducké and to sail up and down the Rio Negro for a week! This is so so so cool to see this years calf's!

    You should be afraid of river otters, they look cute but they are one of the most dangerous animals in Brazil, we say they are "onças aquáticas" or aquatic cheetas, they can and will kill most animals, even humans. Here in Brasília, the capital of Brazil and where I live, in 1977 a kid falled in the ariranha's(a type o river otter) pit, a guard jumped in fast and was able to save the kid but guard was viciously eated alive. There is a statue for him in our zoo. Luckly they are hard to find near cities and prefer big rivers.
