It's hard to balance great tone and power in your singing... Especially when you're trying to hit notes you may be uncomfortable hitting!
Well, a quick study of Queens of the Stone Age singer Josh Homme will help you attain both great tone and power balances!
Josh does a fantastic job making notes and phrasing count. And he uses subtlety as his main tool, which is why unpacking his isolated vocals on their song "No One Knows" is so much fun! Plus... we get to dive into some cool vocal recording nerdiness :)
    Let's dig in!

Very cool analysis ! I believe the whispered parts were recorded by bassist Nick Oliveri. There is a making of video of the song, in which Josh Homme says they gave Nick the lyrics and asked him to record whispered words or lines. Nick was free to choose which words he wanted to whisper. Meanwhile, the rest of the band was betting on which words he would whisper. They probably got "pills" right

In that same video Eric Valentine (the producer) explains how they recorded: three mics, one clean, one overdriven by tape and one room mic with a bit of slap back echo. No double tracking except for the background harmonies.

He's loosened up a little now. If you watch his Guitar Moves video he talks about how he used to want to be mysterious, but he realized if you don't say anything then eventually people stop asking and he realized he actually wanted to share what he learned. He still hasn't done a Rig Rundown or anything though...

Eric Valentine, the producer of Songs for the Deaf, did a pretty in-depth breakdown of this song. I think it made Josh mad, so he pulled it off TH-cam. It's still out there if you look, though. Those background vocals; he said he used a plugin called "Vinylizer." Josh did one pass, and Eric said they copied and pasted it again to the end-part. QOTSA do not use click tracks, and it's a testament to how tight and consistent they keep tempos. Fun video.

Amazing Analysis! - But I want to point out, that the credit for the whispers actually belong to the band's (former) bassist "Nick Oliveri"
You can hear Nick's full voice on these Queens of the Stone Age songs, where Nick us the lead singer, not Josh:
    - "You think I ain't worth a Dollar" / "Millionaire"
    - "Quick & to the pointless"
    - "Six Shooter"
    - "Gonna Leave you"
    - "Just another love song"
    - "Bloody Hammer" (Robert Erickson cover)
    - "Autopilot"
+ The background Choir are Josh & Nick together
    Cheers dude from Cologne, Germany.
