Man. Ive been a self taught vocalist for years. Almost 7 now. And I got introduced to you last year through this channel. I've made more progress in the last 3 months than my whole time trying stuff out. Thank you. Thank you for helping me do more of what I love, and do it well.
That last one is SO key. My face even warmed with a smile while you were explaining it - "Ah, I have a voice that likes to sing -- let's experience it today". So wonderful, I've been embracing this one more recently. Thanks Chris :D
Your vocal greeting to the day reminds me of the calls of the birds at dawn. They begin with quiet, simple, singular calls (I'm here, made it through the night, are you there, did you make it through the night sort of stuff), then it builds into quiet, private sounding warbles. Next they fly to the water bowls I have out for them, sing a few phrases, do a little preening. I like to think that they, just like you Chris, sing because they like singing.
Helping your voice is actually pretty low on the list of benefits of "pounding water", it was the key change in my losing of 50 lbs in 6 months. Now that was alongside an extreme low cal diet, but only normal exercise of running for an hour or walking an hour and a half 4 times a week as well. That was 3 years ago and I have kept all the weight despite my exercise and diet falling off a ton, and I attribute that mostly to the habit of drinking 100-140 fl oz of water a day. I only recommend that you drink room temp water and making sure you have continuous access to a bathroom all day. Great vid again Chris!
Yea it’s 100% calories in and out. Being at that calorie deficit is so much easier if you cut out drinking calories. That’s really awesome for you congrats on losing all that weight!
Thanks again Chris ! The timing for this lesson was perfect ! Very encouraging. I'm what they call a 'senior citizen' and have not had THIS kind of head cold in about 42 years, almost like 'intro' to the 'sick' club! So THIS lesson was very helpful and uplifting !
So I definitely have a hard time drinking water. I'm busy at work. Wearing a mask so I don't think about it. Ugh. I just need to be mindful.. but I'm SO tired vocally when I come home because I work in geriatric PT... so I feel like I'm yelling ALL day because they are hearing impaired. I would love tips for that honestly. The breathing and tension.. I will say that since I started doing yoga EVERY single day, I have become more mindful of my breath and tension throughout the day, and it has helped my voice so much!
I feel like this is some great advice not just for singers a fair bit of it should apply to everybody!Gotta watch your stuff more often, love singing so much but I'm not very good. Thanks for this video! Seem like a great vocal teacher
I love that glottal stop excercise! Never thought I could still practice honing and finding your range, resosances at such a low exertion. Also good if you are in a queit public place.
Hey Chris! I’m still here! My vocals have greatly improved watching your videos and the lessons I’ve taken from my personal vocal coach. I can’t thank you enough! I still have lots of work to do, but I’m very happy with my improvements!
This is sooo good!!!! Love the singing you do, and I love how you teach a lifestyle of your voice, then just singing alone. For me, I have also found lots of water, dynamic speaking, checking for tension and continuous humming very helpful, non which the humming part of it; I got from your video on humming. But now I will add the onsets (glottal stops) in the morning. What I have found also is by continuous awareness and feel of my voice in this way; when I go to warm up, I'm there already, and aware how my voice feels. Your lessons and tips are so helpful in so many ways. Thank you Chris for sharing your passion, and giving so much to so many
These are interesting tips. Some time ago, I would literally forget to breathe, for minutes even. It was scary. Being stressed is a silent killer, so a personal advice (not only for singing, really) is to also listen to your body's not-so-frequent help signals, and stop to rethink your way of facing life. Wonderful video. And that humming was the best one I've ever heard!
Awesome stuff as always. I love your isolated vocal videos. Have you done Hansi Kursch from Blind Guardian yet? I would love to see your take on his vocals.
Humming is just so relaxing and part of my personal well-being routine. The vibrations are cleansing for body, mind and soul. I wish there was more out there on the topic of musical therapy.
As a student music therapist, the more that's known about music therapy the better! For this humming/singing thing in particular, it has been shown to stimulate some nerves (vagus nerve) in the body's nervous system that helps calm down our autonomic/"flight/fight/freeze" response and get to the parasympathetic/"rest" mode. I wish I could come up with any of the articles I read about it, but there's a ton of other things about the voice and music therapy (like Diane Austin's Vocal Psychotherapy and Lisa Sokolov's Embodied VoiceWork) that are also interesting to follow. Hope I've given you some reading or at least some new knowledge!
As I listen to and learn from your videos, sometimes I give my headphones to my girlfriend and have her listen to the little exercises without context and see her reaction. Last time it was grunting (to learn to produce vocal frye properly), this time it was those very suggestive "ahh... ahh... ahh..." warm-ups. It never disappoints! Great info as always, Chris, thank you!
As a yogi, I already do breath and tension check, but I must apply those yogic teaching outside my yoga mat. I find practicing humming and glottal stops are good things to add to my daily routine.
The funny part is that as you mentioned each point to relax, I noticed that I was holding tension in there subconsciously and released it after you called it out lol
Hey chris! I'm here to make a suggestion! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a video on Brandon Flowers from the killers, especially Hot Fuss album era, his vocals are just AMAZING, he sings high notes in such a natural and at the same time rock n roll way!!
I'm an automotive tech and the shop is loud so theres lots of yelling throughout the day but I find keeping my diaphragm engaged and breath control as if im singing with my band, that it helps, I still get fatigue through the day but i assume thats normal, But if I have a show that night I make sure I say as little as possible. But these tips are going to do wonders.
Thanks for the tips, brother! Always helpful stuff. I've been practicing your 'I feel the wind blow' warm ups a lot and I can feel improvement in my voice! Thank you!
Lower abdominal pressure/tension was a TONE and PITCH killer for me as a vocalist for years! Only when I am able to release that do I find I can connect my breath support fully. Great advice for daily habits, thanks Chris.
Chris off topic, sorry. I've been searching your channel for days looking for the video you did on being non-judgmental and critical of others or self. Watched so many excellent videos on the way, but as yet haven't found it. I think it was filmed in the old studio. I want to send it to a friend. Thankyou :)
Hi Chris I've been singing ever since I could talk and that was pretty much delayed because of issues and I've had a lot of speech therapy and I don't know any of these tips so thank you very much for showing these to me I'm going to be 38 years old on December 30th and my mom has always told me that I sing in the either Alto or soprano range.
i've warmed my voice up pretty much every day for the past 10 years... even if I'm just talking it helps Although I start my morning off with a couple of minutes of breathing exercises
My favorite habit is NOT being too confined to any curtain bunch of methods or exercises. For myself, anytime I start checking of boxes or worrying if I'm doing the technique correctly, I become annoyed, uninspired and they make tens.
first thing , one tbls of apple cider vinegar and lemon in a huge glass of water... lip trills before I go to work for about 20 mins ea & everyday water throughout the day helps me
Great tips, and looking forward to implementing them, as they'll be helpful for anything. I'll need to find an alternative for disciplining the cats when they're misbehaving instead of yelling at them. I am recently noticing that that trashes my voice! 😼
Nice one! Lately what's been helpful for me its sorta "chugga chugga" / hit in the gut test before I start singing and even before talking sometimes. It's been a helpful way to remind myself to use my support. Interesting to hear you've developed that support to the degree to where you need to stop it when you don't need it!
Humming and drone track improv often starts with a harmonic minor / “middle eastern” sound for me too, that kind of haunting melancholy thing. Sorry if that was written offensively!
Hey Chris Liepe, i do deep breathing exercices to relax myself everyday , and i have noticed that my larynx moves up and down. I would like to know if it could be bad for my voice that my larynx moves up and down.
Thanks Chris! I've been struggling for about a month with the remnants of a cold...lots of flem, etc. Any thoughts about how to maintain vocal healthy working through the cold and flu season? I'm sure drinking water is a huge factor here. Love these segments!
Haha I remember in high school my mate busting his leg up, I forget how, anyway he’s limping down the street wearing an Aerosmith shirt that just says “WALK THIS WAY” on the back
any advice for a girl with a botched nose job? LOL. I have to pretty much just hold my nostril open or pry open with q-tips in the studio bc it makes things easier. But the sinus issues from a broken nose... you def. gotta make sure you drink water but i noticed particularly in the morning even if you aren't thirsty
I'd definitely recommend some speech level studies... Speech therapy. The first 3 week of my course Discover Your Voice would be very helpful in this regard because they help you move your resonance around your face and body in general. If you can learn how to do that, you'll know where to place your voice for different scenarios and that will help you work with and around your nasality challenges. !!
Very interesting things to do which i will get into the habit to do.Chris what type of physical exercises also help ? For example Does running also help to make voice stamina strong ?
I don't do a lot of running.. I do mostly weight lifting/strength training. Long form cardio isn't as beneficial to me as muscle memory and mindfulness exercises.
Hey Chris! Great video as always! I was wondering if you could maybe cover the topic of singing while moving (running, jumping and even walking)? Specificaly, I find it really hard to keep having good technique while I sing and perform live because I simply move around so much! It's gotten to the point that I almost sound completely tone deaf when I sing hahaha. I noticed many singers don't have this issue when singing live, especially Matt Bellamy and Florence Welch. If you have any advice I would be very grateful :)
Hey Nikola, Chris talks with Marc Martel about this. He touches on the need to be fit enough to do an energetic gig and sing well. th-cam.com/video/8x-j_c8-x_c/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ChrisLiepe
I was playing around with the quiet glottal stops this morning and found myself making what I think is a rasp sound as I opened the stop slowly with a fair bit of air passing through. Does this sound right to you? It's above the larynx, vocal folds engaged. I've watched 2 of your rasp videos, something I get it sometimes not. This feels more accessible and comfortable in my throat. The whisper technique feels tense and strained unless I think about it a lot.
I have a question about the mild glottal stops: do you do it with the same note? Or do you change? And another question: depending on how you place the glottal stops, the voice sounds lyric or normal. If you place the cut deeper, it sounds lyric. I hope what I'm saying isn't nonsense....🤦♀️
At this point in my day and for these purposes, you can use any comfortable, changing or not note. And it doesn't matter how it is placed. Whatever helps wake up and feel out your voice. Variety is good! :)
It's such a huge pity that I'm not a native English speaker because I CAN'T sing so fast as you do at the beginning of the video.... And I'd love to!!! Songs like the one you sing and Ballroom Blitz or Carol of the Bells, for example.... When I try to sing them my tongue turns into a huge knot.... Greetings, mate!
Well Eva, ya gotta admit that a 'huge knot' is alot better than what usually happens to me = a mouthful of uncontrollable wiggling tongues all over my mouth !!! Blaugh ! =D
Hello, I have a couple of questions that's been bothering me for awhile. I've been singing and screaming for about 8 months now, and I've noticed that after singing with distortion/screaming I can't get the full power(or any sort of power) on the clean notes(only when I use my chest voice, for some reason it's even easier to sing high when that problem occurs) because it feels like the distortion doesn't go away. I don't strain when I scream, yell or whatever, it doesn't hurt but for some reason I can only control my distortion in the beginning of the session, and then the more I use it the harder it becomes to keep my clean voice actually clean(if that makes sense). I can hit those notes if I don't add or use any distortion before that, and again, singing those never hurts or strains me. It got better with some practice but its still not good enough for me to sing comfortably. I googled it a couple times but didn't find anything. So my questions are...Can I fix this, am I doing something wrong or is it something that just goes away with practice?
It sounds like you might be pushing your voice maybe a little too much with out really diving into the FEEL-based way of learning how your voice works. Have you taken my two free courses: Free Your Voice and the 7 Highly Effective Exercises that Won't Annoy Your Neighbors yet? Start there! Everything you are describing is curable with a more mindful approach to your voice!
@@chrisliepe Sounds like you're right because I indeed tend to push just a little bit on some notes but it never really bothered me and I never thought about it. It really surprises me that you actually managed to determinate the problem so easily without even listening to my singing. Well, what can I say, you're the teacher here and it only proves how good you are at doing it. Your lessons taught me how to expand my range, how to sing with distortion and you're incredibly underrated overall. Thanks man, I appreciate the answer and I'll definitely check these out. Wish you the best.
Glottal stops, did you mean: "Spanish Dracula Laughs"? lololol lemme find the clip: th-cam.com/video/Zth2ubakW8E/w-d-xo.html EDIT; maybe memory of this also brightens up your mood every day doing your stops :D
@@realjohndead I'm back, and feeling stupid. 1 US fl-oz = 1.04 UK fl-oz, so 16 US fl-oz = 16.64 UK fl-oz, which is a whole 2/3 of a UK fl-oz MORE!! I am aghast! Also, US pints are 16 US fl-oz, and UK pints are 20 UK fl-oz, which is madness! Pure madness!! Still..."the more you know", and all that.
I love everything you are doing for us, online singing students, but you are dangerously approaching Celine Dion attitude regarding voice perseverance. She was wearing a scarf all day long and didn't talk to people if she didn't had to. I don't see how you are going to put new videos if you stop talking. Scarf is ok. A little gay, but ok. ;)
haha... I don't see how any of these 5 tips even come close to that kind of vice. These are mindfulness considerations and exercises and ways to practice healthy habits. Not scarfs, teas or special concoctions.
@@chrisliepe I am just joking :) You've figured that out for sure. Your tips are always excellent! You have helped me reach a certain things with such an ease. Thank you for everything you are doing! I mean it! Also, you are still a cockerel and Celine is a hen, so there is still a lot of time for all the nuances ;)

When I try to sing them my tongue turns into a huge knot....
Greetings, mate!
Well Eva, ya gotta admit that a 'huge knot' is alot better than what usually
happens to me = a mouthful of uncontrollable wiggling tongues all over my
mouth !!! Blaugh ! =D
@@carolmartin2503 😀❤ Thanks!
At least I know I'm not the only one I suffer with this songs...
Lmao, I got a toilet paper ad on your video now. I wonder if this has to do with your poop muscle references. Algorithm needs to chill lmao
HA! That's awesome :) Algorithm's are only so so smart :)
Hey dude will you please do a mac miller analysis🎅
Tip number 5 - add a little Muse in your day😀
Always :)
H,i, can you watch a cover band called God Save The Queen latest concerts (2019).
I would love to hear what you think!
The intro vocals are different from what I have heard you do before
I've been branching out :) Did you like the intro?
@@chrisliepe Yes, It's great. I really find variety fun and you really try to make the best use of your voice :)
If you you cover that song you’re going to need to go Kool-aid man and bust through a wall
Glottal stops, did you mean: "Spanish Dracula Laughs"? lololol lemme find the clip: th-cam.com/video/Zth2ubakW8E/w-d-xo.html EDIT; maybe memory of this also brightens up your mood every day doing your stops :D
Haha. Yes exactly :)
melody sounds very muse like ...
Anyone know what 16 US oz is in UK oz?
I don't.. The dollar is getting weaker though!
@@chrisliepe "Thanks..."
It’s about half a litre or two metric cups (roughly)
Oh! It’s one pint

I don't sound like devin townsend or kyo from dir en grey yet, I want my money back. jk
