At the 44th Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute to John Williams, Steven Spielberg salutes his longtime friend and collaborator, John Williams. The filmmaker talks about what a scene in E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL would feel like with Williams' iconic music - and without.
The Tribute took place at the Dolby Theatre on June 9, 2016 in Hollywood, California. Paying tribute to Williams were presenters, performers and guests including Drew Barrymore, Kobe Bryant, Chris Columbus, Gustavo Dudamel, Will Ferrell, Harrison Ford, Morgan Freeman, Mark Hamill, Tom Hanks, Bryce Dallas Howard, Cloris Leachman, George Lucas, Seth MacFarlane, Steve Martin, Idina Menzel, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Itzhak Perlman and Daisy Ridley.

Well. I always think of George Lucas when I think John Williams. But they’re all life long best friends so I suppose :)
I agree, but they have a pair of twins on "magical partnership": Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone. I visited the exhibition about Morricones influence on cinema in Paris movie academy museum at the turn of 2018/2019. Leone trusted Morricone so absolutely that he told him the scene, then let him compose the music and Leone adapted the scene to his music!

Yes,ive always felt that way about my favorite composer John williams. Please don't go,ive already lost 4 of my other favorite composers. Jerry goldsmith,John barry,Elmer bernstein and James horner. @@mikeshaffer4912 He was a highly accomplished jazz pianist in his early years and if you check out his early scores for Lost in Space,Twilight Zone etc his jazz chops are evident.

I heard when Lucas first heard the iconic Star Wars theme for the first time he began to weep. Imagine yourself being Lucas for that moment.

I accredit 50% of the success of Star Wars to the music. It had such an emotional impact on every scene.
According to the documentary Empire Of Dreams, John Williams' music was the only thing in Star Wars epIV to actually exceed George Lucas' expectations.
He had neither money or technology to do things the way he wanted them, but the music was spot on - and more.

Imperial March wasn't made until the second movie. But yes, his music is amazing.

film composers are so underappreciated. Look how ET would have virtually zero emotion had it not been for that incredible music. Spielberg is so, so right. They are geniuses. John Williams, we're not worthy !!!!

@@Milepost93Productions That's bullshit! Composers have always been praised and appreciated. For as far back as I can remember, record stores have had soundtrack and movie score sections, and even when I was a very young child in the early 80s I knew who John Williams, John Barry, Basil Poledouris, Elber Bertstein, and Ennio Morricone were. My home wasn't even very musically inclined either. Music has always been integral to movies, and it's always been appreciated.
@@Syklonus Yeah, but the soundtracks are not meant to praise the composer. The composer more often than not has no rights to those soundtracks, receives no royalties and has very little say in what goes on that record. They simply get a name put down for credit. The soundtrack only exists to draw more attention to the movie and make more money for the production company.
Also, consider the fact that this AFI award is the only one in history to be given to a composer. One has to rise to the unattainable god status of John Williams in order to be even considered. I mean take a look at the presenter, Steven Spielberg. He won the award 21 YEARS earlier, and many (including Spielberg himself) would credit the success of most of his movies to John Williams, yet it took another 21 years for the AFI to recognize him. @Historymaker2001 and @JoyceGibbs are not claiming that composers are not appreciated at all. They're simply suggesting that composers are underappreciated, which I can agree.
@Dauda András both are great films, that was just pure bad luck happens all the time, John Williams is a favorite of mine, but my favorite is Danny Elfman.

John Williams has to be one of the all time best composers. Alone his James Bond scores and especially the sound in Jurassic Park are masterpieces, but there are many many more...

John Williams isn’t just able to make incredible music, he’s a storyteller. You can hear his score and you immediately know what’s going on, you don’t need to see the visuals. The score conveys all that for you.
I'll always be very proud to tell my grandchildren that I lived at the time of the genius of John Williams.
In my honest heartfelt truth i believe that john williams is the Mozart of our times... his music will live on and inspire everyone for generations to come... i'm glad he is still at work and has that young spark that makes his music seem brilliant.. thank you john for many emotions i have felt in movies right when the proper notes hit the center of my heart.
I love Williams, and his scores are amazing but that's an unfair comparison. Mozart was literally a child genius, and he actually INVENTED many of the musical styles that you associate with orchestration. Williams, as great as he is, is heavily derivative of earlier 20th century composers like Holst, and while he works wonders at applying music to film, he's not very original in his style.
Look, I get it. I grew up in the golden age of John Williams (late 70s early 80s) so I have a huge amount of nostalgia and respect for his work, and like many It can be hard to separate being touched emotionally so deeply with actual genius, but I think a lot of people make that mistake.
@@Syklonus Couldn't John Williams have a differnt kind of genius, in translating film into music, using music to create emotion to convey a spoecific narrative. Williams also found a way to make Orchestrial music significant, valuable and gave it a contemporary. In modern society perhaps Mozart's genius would have had no voice outside a select audience.
@SehrBA Mozart was not a rock star in his lifetime he didn't have the chance to be, he died penniless and was thrown in a pauper's grave at the age of just 35. Mozart knew virtually none of the accolades in his lifetime that John Williams enjoys now. As much as I adore John Williams' music and his genius, I guarantee even he would say he can't hold a candle to Mozart, perhaps the greatest most talented composer in the history of Western music.
What Mozart achieved in only 35 years of life is just unfathomable given the extraordinary quality of his non-stop output. I think only JS Bach can be rightly compared to Mozart.
John Williams forged his trademark style from marrying elements of early 20th century kaleidoscopic composers (Holst, Korngold, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Richard Strauss, Steiner,Waxman etc, it had all been done before) but for late 20th century cinema which had infinitely more technical and ambitious possibilities than the early days of Hollywood which came to rely so heavily on the sumptuous music to bring the movies to life and add reams of colour for audiences.
Spielberg & Lucas et al harked back to those days of the great Hollywood scores of Steiner,Korngold,Waxman etc and Williams was the man to make that a reality-Lucas always envisioned Star Wars as an all-encompassing Space Opera on the scale of Wagner's Ring cycle and wanted a score that reflected Wagner's ingenious use of leitmotifs to represent characters, emotions, places etc, which is exactly what Williams provided. Of course one had to be a highly accomplished artist to be able to pull this enormous project off and Williams did that, but the score for the original movie (A New Hope) has large chunks of barely concealed Holst's Planets, Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Prokofiev's Scythian Suite not to mention large handfuls of Korngold openings woven into it. It was only really from the Empire Strikes Back onwards (once Star Wars had become a huge hit and they all knew Lucas' vision of a multi-movie Star Wars saga was now gonna happen) that WIlliams really started to forge his own more unique orchestral voice which he then went on to use to spectacular effect in so many later movies.
There's no denying his place in the history of cinema, that's assured and deserved, he's a fabulous composer. But on a level with Mozart? He died in 1791 and we've never seen his like since, not on that level. I don't even know if we will in the future, he was a freak of nature. Korngold himself was a child prodigy, writing huge orchestral scores of extraordianry maturity at the age of 7 but even Korngold wasn't half the composer Mozart was at that age.
@@Syklonus Everyone in music at this level of skill brings new things, but Mozart too was inspired by somebody, like Bach, nobody ever starts from scratch in music.
Williams's music is mixing European music along with other influences like jazz, and gets a unique result immediately identifiable, he is a Mozart of our times.
But there are others, what of Quincy Jone's carrer ? Howard Shore ? Hans Zimmer ?
These are all different tastes, with the same flavor of excellence, I hate to see music as a competition where someone supposedly wins and above the others.
In classical music one says Mozart is king but Bach is god, I m just happy we got all these guys for everybody to hear.

To listen to the second movement of The Emperor Concerto will invoke all emotions conceivable. In my humble opinion.

John Williams is one of those people you just don't say a bad word about. Hes a complete one off and I cant remember a film ive watched and said his music is awful. Simply the best end of story.

Spielberg and Williams are incredible together. I think the best demonstration of their mutual respect and admiration for each other comes from this exchange regarding Schindler's List:

Portugal, Christmas 2019. I'm a 37 year old kid, father of two wonderful little boys. I can only pray that my toddlers can experience the sheer emotions that John Williams gave me when I was their age. Life is not easy but I am thankful that I could experience the talent of this man in bringing to life movies such as Superman, Jurassic Park and my personal favourite Hook to life. Thank you!

I absolutely love John Williams. His music gives me goosebumps. Our 4.5 year old son passed away in June of 2019. Mikey's entire funeral was music from Jurassic Park.

Whenever I see that moment in ET it takes my breath away, and this time it brought the trickles of tears to my eyes. And almost all of that is because of that wonderous music.
Every homage to John Williams is still less than what he deserves. The man is a true living legend. Composing one big score once is what can happen to any good maestro. Composing DOZENS of unforgettable scores for movies ranging from drama to suspense, from kids adventure to thriller, from action to fantasy, it is no accident, no fluke. It's a genius' work.

I agree with many comments here that John Williams is the greatest composer of our generation and sure to be revered with the greatest of composers till the end of time itself... He is so humble in his genius when hes earned the right to be brash... I think he knows that his gift is a blessing, and respectfully treats it as such...An artist no less inspiring than Michelangelo, he is truly a remarkable man... one for the Ages...

Images and dialogues can talk to the individuals , but music can talk to the individual's soul, and nobody did that better , in Hollywood, than John Williams. Without him, none of these famous films that talked to our souls so beautifully, would have success to do so. He is trully the magical dust behind all these marvelous films.

John Williams is beyond description
John Williams is a legend among composing, but particularly in film scores. Film scores have this charm to them, and it's his masterful composing that makes the scores as iconic as they are, and he is by far the best film composer of the 20th and 21st centuries. I mean: Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Superman, E.T., Harry Potter, Schindler's List, Star Wars, Home Alone, etc. You can't help but just enjoy listening to his film music. Mr. Williams, we are so glad for all the work you have done in music.
We will never see another John Williams - ever. The man is a genius beyond words !

People so easily forget how much the music matters. When you are watching a movie the only reason you felt something is because of the music being played along with the writing. Writers, actors, composers and all the people it takes to make a movie are truly talented beyond measure.
There are very few collaborations in any industry, let alone the entertainment industry, that are as successful and memorable as the one between these two men. They have shaped some of the most memorable and beloved moments in film history and did it together. I don’t think there will ever be a collaboration between director and composer like this ever again.
