Considering the scale of the battles during feudal japan, hearing the sound of hundreds of archers screaming as soon as they loose an arrow would be quite terrifying.
True, but as an army, intimidating the ennemy is important, so is being visible to your allies, specifically, your commander. Not really a japanese thing.
European warbows were normally used in open battlefield, with the archers grouped en-masse, and from a distance where it was impossible to not see them. Also the psicological effect is important. For the same reason, Romans used whistling sling bullets.
SpyMonkey3D, to be fair this was probably scary years ago but could you imagine someone shouting AAAA after firing a bow at you, of course you'd only know about it if they missed you but I'd probably run away laughing with the only scary factor being I could take an arrow to the knee at any moment.
SpyMonkey3D I think this screaming is actually a "kiai". Its a breathing technique in every japanese martial art and many other martial arts use the same principle. The idea is to use the muscleforce used for pushing air out of the body rapidly (the scream itself is initially so the sensei can hear you using the technique and becomes a habit over time) in your attacking motion. Thats why they start screaming when releasing the arrow. It is simply to maximise the power put into the arrow efficiently. If it actually helps to significantly give the arrow more punch is another question, but it does however help to create a motion routine which is the most important thing for accuracy and stamina conservation. Ofc i could be totally wrong and they are just shouting for the fun of it in this demonstration. i dont practise kyudo.
That's just a thing for Medieval Japanese warfare in general lol. When I did Shinkendo as a lil teenager like 2 decades ago we did the same AY, YA, TO, AY shouts every time we threw a swing.

Daniel Tursillini Well i never read about this before but it's not needed. I don't know why japan have odd strategies and tactics i mean Europe and Middle east never used these kind of tactics and they were able to defeated many kingdoms in a couple of years
Screaming in this makes me think of a similar effect of a musket that roars after firing and before hitting the enemy. This kind of demonstration will be effective in combat in both psychological assault like the musket roar and hitting the enemy with accuracy by a decade experienced soldier as an alternative to the propelling force of the musket ammo.

It's a glitch, that particular issue cropped up in version 1.18 when they introduced the controversial floppy hat physics model. Some attribute it to the AI trying to follow the hat when it wobbles but it's been impossible to replicate in testing. They patched it by setting power to zero now every time the models turn by 30 degrees, it happens to stop the AI from shooting each other. They seem to reset after one full revolution. It's getting fixed anyway when they rip out all the old models and replace them with the new schoolgirl anime update textures in a few months.

This Archery Dojo needs to be upgraded. What I usually do is pick Chokosabe, upgrade the roads, and make an alliance with the Shimazu. Don't convert to Christianity, and spam Archers, usually a mix of Bow Ashigaru and No-Dachi will keep the campaign in your favor.
The top is high so if someone from the enemy is trying to aim at them, they may miss the head because they can't tell from a distance where the head is. Not sure if this is true, but it's my guess.
It's actually to let their commander to know how many arrows are being shot. This will allow the field commander to understand the arrow reserves. Sometimes they use flags instead, but yelling works too.
i guess the reason why they are yelling so loud is , cause on a battlefield its important for their leader to hear in seconds when his archers hit a target , firing or just are still alive btw love the flank cover . You can imagine how sick it had to be at the time when hundreds or thousands of these archer squads fight together like single cells in a body . Deadly
Imagine you're in the battlefield and you hear these screams from the other side not just 10 but 4000-5000 of them....and your being ambushed at night.
Also, you have a grammar mistake, you wanted to say being shoot, not shout. But anyways is not the reason. If you are going to talk please inform yourself
This is really an amazing thing to watch. I find quite a few similarities to western pike and shot style that would be used in the 18th century. The idea of ranked fire and vocal queues seem to stick around across cultures. Truly fantastic
It's common still in modern squad tactics where you are yelling as you clear rooms and kneel and call out when reloading so your buddy to the right can cover your firing lane.
Bows were more rapid fire and easier to produce than muskets, however they were not as powerful and required more skill to use. Archers were used to supplement and support match lock gunners, also archers were able to fire into places that muskets couldn’t reach, such as over castle walls due to the much higher arch of fire of a bow.
What's really interesting is that a lot of the tactics used by the Samurai in their heyday are still being used by our modern armies, such as fire and maneuver as shown in the video.
Sultan Hakim's party is launching an assault against the wall of Halmar. You have 9 troops fit for battle against the enemy's 357. You decided to... I always wondered why Japanese bows were asymmetrical like that. It never occurred to me that they were designed to be fired from a crouching stance, very cool.
@@kroIya I agree with you. I was just pointing out that the shape and size of the bottom limb makes it possible to shoot from horseback....which was and is still done. That's all. True horsebows are far superior for ease of use/reliability from horseback.

Well i never read about this before but it's not needed. I don't know why japan have odd strategies and tactics i mean Europe and Middle east never used these kind of tactics and they were able to defeated many kingdoms in a couple of years
I suppose it is intimidating for the attackers though
Well, Goku achieved ultra instinct without screaming. Lol.
Now imagine 200 or 500 archers all doing the same thing on an ancient battlefield....scary AF

Whiterun Guards: "Hm? Must have been the wind."
Great timing! Favorite part starts around 3:08... Archer closest to us realizes they're being flanked.
And the farthest. It seems to be a pre arranged drill to cover rear guard and the flanks. Interesting
the guy furthest from us also did the same; look at the arrow in the ground. the end of lines are responsible for checking 360 degrees in case of flanks
More likely to be finishing off enemy injured nearby.
We are being flanked milord!

The top is high so if someone from the enemy is trying to aim at them, they may miss the head because they can't tell from a distance where the head is. Not sure if this is true, but it's my guess.

It is honorable to scream before you fire, so that your enemy knows they are being fired upon.
It's actually to let their commander to know how many arrows are being shot. This will allow the field commander to understand the arrow reserves. Sometimes they use flags instead, but yelling works too.

@@gerryclaffey5737 intimidating enemies. vikings also used this strategy
i guess the reason why they are yelling so loud is , cause on a battlefield its important for their leader to hear in seconds when his archers hit a target , firing or just are still alive btw love the flank cover . Not much of an ambush if they move like that
That's called bounding it's continuous fire and moving forward while keeping the enemy's head down.

Scream loud enough the first time and they'll never hear you coming the second time
That's what she said
But sensei I missed!
