- Infidelity just released their Contra NES to SNES port and wow is it now IMO the best version of the original Contra NES game you could possibly play and it works on MiSTer FPGA! Retro gaming news incoming as this is just an awesome new way to play Contra on SNES plus it works great on the MiSTer FPGA SNES core as that has MSU-1 enhancements in FPGA!
and this is hot on the heels of Indidelity porting Mega Man to SNES with MSU1 Support! Plus they used the Famicom Contra base game which has enhancement chips on board making it more visually impressive than the NES version of Contra! And considering Contra is one of the best NES games...a win win!

The Super Nintendo was SUPPOSED to have a CD-ROM attachment known as the SNES CD...but alas that was cancelled. So what did someone do? They created a variation of the same technology in software and FPGA code so we NOW HAVE FULL MOTION VIDEO AND CD QUALITY AUDIO ON THE MiSTer FPGA SNES CORE! How's that for cool retro gaming fun?
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

Received Contra (NES) on my 11th birthday and a Jaws themed birthday cake in 1988. Definitely my favorite birthday present of all-time. I played this game to death. I think my mom bought this game at Sears, back then that was our go-to place to buy NES games.
Jaws themed. That sounds like a good time. I remember an ET themed one and more than one Ninja Turtles one
Infidelity makes the best ports.
I wish companies had the same passion that fans have for retro gaming.
This fanmade Contra SNES port made me realise if Konami rereleased their first two Contra games on the SNES along with Contra III in one cart in the 90's, kinda like Super Mario All Stars or Ninja Gaiden Trilogy.
What was your realization?
I think he said it
@@VideoGameEsoterica I don't think so. I mean, there is "if" but no "then". So what would have happened if they've done that? I'm genuinely curious. 😃
Awesome. I won $1000 cash off a drunk bar owner 10 years ago because I told him I could beat Contra with no code. If I couldn’t, my band had to play our upcoming show at his place for free. Went to his apartment, and laid waste to game like I knew I would and he was pissed but he was a man of his word and gave me 10 $100 bills. Honestly, one of the finest moments of my life.
Haha you hustled him with contra 🤣
@@VideoGameEsoterica I’ll never forget his face when he realized that you get extra lives for points and I was going to end with more than I started. He was so defeated.
I hustled my wife at bocce once. Told her I never played. No money changed hands 🤣
I just got finished listening to that Vomitron Contra track right before you uploaded this!
Haha good timing
I was gonna say, those samples sure did sound allot like Vomitron's Contra medley. :)
No Nes for the wicked is really good listen.
Looking forward to playing it with the extras. I just noticed that you can switch between two weapons (as in Contra III). This alone ought to make things easier. I first played Contra at launch, in 1988. I was a fan of Konami's arcade games; Track & Field, Time Pilot, Gradius, so I was looking forward to this. It was something that my brother and I used to play quite often. We eventually were able to beat the game before the Konami code was revealed. It's tough, but fair. If you can get the Spread weapon + Rapid, you'll be nearly indestructible. Tearing through most enemies before they have a chance to react.
Yes you have weapon switching and lock on controls. Some nice additions
I love that he added the Contra III controls for locking your character in place for aiming!
Holy crap, really??
Exactly. The quality of life controls
Yep :)
Ah, but does it achieve Shattered Soldier levels of greatness by also having a gun-lock/free-movement button?
@@TexasHollowEarth L is free movement with locked orientation (except up). R is free aim while standing still.
This feels a lot like a FamicomCD project, being a NES game running on SNES to utilize the MSU1 chip
It’s got those vibes for sure
Play my good ol' Contra with Vomitron as BGM? A dream come true!! Thanks for it.
Happy to do my part
That rockin soundtrack really elevates it🤘🏻
It’s some good new music
Great to hear about this Contra release! On a related note, did you or anyone play Hard Corps Uprising? Came out on the PS3/X360 gen, a run&gun made by Arc System Works, the people behind Guilty Gear and DB FighterZ
I played it once. I don’t remember having much of an opinion. I’d have to go back and try again
Dude is that the band vomitron? That's awesome they are an awesome VGC band
Honestly I’m not sure
Now this is cool. All the little additions really make it feel SNES worthy. Although not always the case, the MSU1 audio definitely works for me here. And, just imagine if anyone ever goes in and does a bit of an "All-Stars" with the colours and stuff too. This is why I really appreciate seeing these proper ports of NES games coming to SNES.
PS. I suspect at least some of the people saying "What's the point in this?" are really just trolls who don't like to see the SNES get any support/love in modern times and want to try and diminish any progress that's made on it. They definitely don't speak for the masses of real SNES fans at all.
Some people just don’t get why these ports are fun. That’s fine. Doesn’t stop us from having fun :)
These MSU1 enhancements have some cool little updates, nothing too major but well worth it for sure the only thing that goes right over my head is the generic PCM music lol, you go from beautiful unique chip tune audio that is usually timed and in tune with the gameplay, to something you can mix in from a generic rock music CD, but these things are totally subjective so it could just be me who feels this way, what I could understand though, is if they used the enhanced audio to upgrade the audio with updated tracker music, add in more channels, bass and treble, reverb etc, I'd get that for sure, even MIDI 2.0 would be cool to see, but good synthesized music is hard and takes creativity, in some ways it's the hardest and most artistically impactful thing about these retro games, I have so far only heard of one MSU1 that was well done, brilliantly done in fact, that is Super Mario World MSU1, it has a new beautiful rich and creative soundtrack that actually too talent to produce, rather than sounded like a MP3 rip of a generic rock instrumental music CD, lol, sorry to be harsh, I'm not trying to offend anyone, I'm just not a fan of using the enhanced MSU1 music ability to replace beautiful synth music with generic PCM music, when it can be used to such great effect if a bit of effort and creativity was shown, just see SMW MSU1 as an example of what MSU1 could, and I believe was intended to be originally, shibby.
Limitation is the greatest catalyst for creativity and imagination.
Edit> Oh yeah, and there is the smooth jazz MIDI MSU1 F-Zero version, which is really nice as an alternative.
I like the smaller update form factor. I’m less interested in a 16 bit contra remake but a port with new audio and QOL improvements? Yes please
@@VideoGameEsoterica Contra Hard Corps has one of the most crem'da'la'crem soundtracks known to man, it would take some serious talent to outclass that GST, though there are some really talented tracker artists around now days, the likes of Trash80 (Robot Sneakers & Sodium Sonnet is worth a listen) & Rebels (ARACHNO.DTRAX & EDZES), Squarepusher, Drum Machine, Mitch Murder, any of these guys could probably come up with an incredible updated tracker GST's, and don't forget some of the OG musicians who worked on the NES, Mega Drive Amiga, PC etc are still around, there is some incredible tracker hard/software now days, so you could pull off something really special if done right, once done, it just needs presenting in the game in HQ PCM, ideally 768K would be best, but not sure what MSU1 tops out @, MIDI 2.0 is also incredible, it's actually 2 way communication in real-time, so you could pull off some incredible audio all-around in both retro and modern video games, the idea of a new Nintendo Mario or Zelda game for example with full-fat MIDI 2.0 is incredible, MIDI 2.0 could be massive if game devs embrace it, modern retro inspired indie games would be dope with good MIDI 2.0 soundtracks and sound effects built into the game engine.
If you know 65c02 ASM, you can add those features if you want. He left extensive documentation.
I really need to check all this MSU-1 stuff of his out. I love Mega Man Minus Infinity and Legend of Link for my Famicom.
It’s a fun little “add on”
This looks awesome. Is it similar to the Mega Man 2 remix for snes? Do you know how to get this running on the Super NT (JB) would it require a FXPAK pro cartridge or something?
I believe you need the flash cart with MSU1 support yes
I feel spoiled saying this, but my late Grandfather was an arcade operator from the fifties through early 2000s, and my first Contra memory is playing it on his dual screen Playchoice-10 (which I still have to this day in my rec room!). As a kid I don't think I ever passed level 4 haha..
Oh man lucky grandpa to have
just finished the game, really impressive port almost everything is close to the FC original! it even has aim and movement lock ala PS2 contras too!
It’s an awesome port. More of a better thing
Waiting to see someone do graphics mods for these, since infidelity converts the graphics to SNES standard 4bpp. I’d love to play these conversions with full 16bit graphics updates!
That would be interesting to see. I wonder if the new look would mesh well
Big difference in the first stage: the tree leaves blow in the background in the japanese version, and they're fixed in the US version. There are also (static, not controllable) map screens between each stage in the japanese version.
I was wondering who’s notice the leaves
I had shown off the MSU1 to my sister (with some history behind the MSU1 project) who was all in on the cutscene from the 2 movies mashed up (admittedly, I now LONG for a contra movie with Arnold & Sylvester)
She was pretty disappointment when it dropped me in game. The words she used was: "Uhg, bait and switch." Then was off to find a copy of Rambo to watch.
Thanks for the heads up.
One should always watch Rambo as a rule of thumb
Does MSU1 soundtrack loop points in this port?
Yes it restarts
I got my Contra cartridge from my cousins. They sold it to me used for $20.
A solid deal!
Omg I hope this has the Virt soundtrack! … watching now! Edit: oh hell yeah, sounds like Contra Virt. A+
It’s got multiple soundtracks :)
Now let's make one thing very clear. Many of those "AAA" prductions with all the usual crap that comes with 'em stinks in comparison to what emu guys and the scene as a whole do in their free time, for free!
The one punishes you for purchasing the game. The other is simply a gift. No what do we choose, haha!
Great stuff, now even the SNES is emulating its way through the gaming landscape. What a time to be alive.
It’s def been a fun past few years to be a retro gaming fan!
Love what they did with Contra here.
Don't like watching VGE playing it. :D
I can still finish the game in under 20 minutes and see his level 1 boss battle made me cry. :D
Good job on the video though. 👍
It really isn't that difficult, but then again my brothers and I spent an entire summer with it since it was one of I think 4 games we had access to.
Lol I can’t be an expert at every game
I was probably 5 the first time i played Contra. It really was one of those titles that everyone owned. The pseudo 3D stages were wild back then.
I’d say I was probably around the same age
Never thought to find such a game of my childhood on a Snes and quite well done.
I only remember playing this game on a European version and finishing so many times that I lost count. XD
And of course, the game wasn't called Contra but Probotector.
Such an odd name change and IMO not a good one lol
I love your videos! But I'm gonna have to say the NES ost will blow this new soundtrack out the water.
That’s why it’s included in this new version. Best of both worlds
I can’t wait to try this with the MSU audio.
Really though guys the game is not that hard it’s easily beatable without the Konami code.
Maybe if I had more time
very cool
I always love stuff like this. The thing you love except now better
Do these MSU1 ports support the better graphical capabilities of the SNES? The NES could only ever support 8 sprites per scanline so if you had lots of sprites laid out horizontally they would have to take turns being rendered and flicker as a result. I can see that the sprites here flicker when they overlap, but I'm not seeing any evidence that sprites on opposite sides of the screen can cause each other to flicker.
I believe they can take advantage of the hardware in diff ways but it’s down to the implementation
Contra on the NES is almost better than the arcade version.
I think personally it’s the better of the two
The first Contra (on NES, not the arcade) is lowkey best game ever made. And the MSU1 soundtrack delivers!
It’s up there for sure but if you ask me the best NES game from Konami on NES in Castlevania III
@@VideoGameEsoterica Castlevania 3 is best soundtrack on NES, even without extra sound chip from the Famicom version.
The extra sound chip does make it even better and that’s saying something considering how good the NES music is
Mario 3 needs an snes port!
What's wrong with Super Mario All-Stars?
I think he means original art style and maybe some MSU1 support
NES games are better on SNES from a hardware perspective alone. Now no more screen edge drawing/blinking sprites/ or slowdown. If Nintendo would have released a SNES CD a year after Contra 3 came out we could of got Contra Trilogy for 39.99!! MSU1 treatment for all 3 games!
That would been a fun reality to see snes cd be real
rom ?
My problem with these isn't so much the music but the lack of ambition. If I were to port Contra to SNES I would strive for authenticity and remake it using Contra Spirits as a base, handcrafting sprites and recomposing the music for the SF soundchip. This in effect comes off close to just removing sprite limits and streaming an OST while you play.
Limitation is the greatest catalyst for creativity and imagination.
Someone who gets it, the whole generic PCM music thing over the beautiful chip tune audio just goes right over my head, but it can be done well, just see Super Mario World MSU1 for a beautiful creative MSU1 soundtrack (as well as the F-Zero MSU1 version with smooth jazz MIDI music), ultimately it would be amazing to see HQ tracker music in these MSU1 versions, get some of the best tracker music talent involved, and we would get some real ear candy.
And many people love it! I am personally on the fence, i do love having choice, and certain quality of life fixes are very welcome (love the idea of being able to lock the gun in place like with snes contra for example). But there is something to be said for playing nes games on nes, warts and all. But having the choice is amazing i and really apprecia infidelity's work. And while on paper this may sound relatively easy, there is definitely work that still needs to be done 'just' to get this. I think your idea is indeed nice but maybe different target audience?
That’s just a diff kind of project
Super c too?
You assume that we all watch all your videos and know what MSU1 support means. What exactly is it?
It’s a custom co processed that’s…imaginary. As in it only exists in code / FPGA code / flash carts in code. Enhances what the SNES can do
He did'n't assume anything you sausage, his video pretty much makes it clear what MU1 is, if you actually watched it, beyond that you have Google (or DuckDuckGo, what ever you prefer), besides the fact that most of his audience will probably be well acquainted with MSU1 by now, as it's been around a good while by this point.
You're a Channel 4 person? We were all Channel 3 people where I lived.
3-4 switch, it was always a choice in North America but i never knew anyone that choose 4 lol
Just what I guess my dad set it up as lol
That was dads job. I was like..5? 6?
Link please
i need this for tate contra :(
That would be a fun time
weird you saying you prefer nes vs arcade, what about nes do you like better,
Just the nostalgia of it all
MSU1 audio never sits right with me. I will always prefer real chip tunes. They just blow up file size.
Well that’s in here too :) og soundtrack
Same here bruv, but MSU1 can be used to upgrade the chip tune music, something that apart from the F-Zero MSU1 version with the smooth jazz MIDI soundtrack from the 90s hasn't been done yet, though SMW made great use of it with custom versions of orchestrated music, which is dope.
@@VideoGameEsoterica And usually i think there are choices for the dl? version, one with msu and one w/o for those who do not want it (for bloat reasons or others)?
not gonna lie, they way you play this game is painful to watch. the port is impressive I will try it later
I can’t be an expert at every game ever
The only bad MSU1 soundtrack I've heard so far was for Pilotwings. It was atrocious.
I haven’t checked that one out yet
Whatever they did to make the music sound like the NES version was great. I wish SNES Ninja Gaiden trilogy would get the same treatment. The music sounds like trash.
I haven’t played those ninja Gaiden games in forever
I love contra I have beaten this game many time without the code and I only beat it with two players without the code once of my best friend
Things I’ll never be able to do for $1000 Alex
@@VideoGameEsoterica you can beat this game you know with theses nes game you just need memorize these stages because it gradually becomes more difficult lol
If only I had more time lol
@@VideoGameEsoterica That's the thing, with time and dedication a lot is possible. Then again seeing your level one play. mabye not :P (loved the vid as always, only stopped as i do plan to play this and want some surprises while playing, altho level one and two are still very active in my memory)
I got so good at this game when I was a kid that I didn’t even need the Konami code.
I must be the only one who still needs it lol
