    Just a few weeks ago, my grandparents and I went on a trip for my graduation. We went up to Toledo for the Schoonmaker museum ship and Ohio tug, then Port Huron, then Mackinaw City and the Mackinaw Bridge, then Sue St Marie and the Soo Locks and Valley Camp, then Iron Mountain Upper Peninsula, then Duluth and William A Irvin, Superior Wisconsin and saw the Meteor, then took the Lake Express ferry from Milwaukee to Muskegon.
    It was quite fun seeing the long ships passing and the Soo Locks boat tour.

    I remember that day, there were about 7 of us down on the short end of South Pier when the Alder, Anderson, Kaye E, and others all came through in less than a couple hours.

    Some of the newer CSL ships come by my city. Cornwall. We had a big thing back in the 60's that thought we were gonna get all that shipping going to and from the lakes, so we built a stupid massive high bridge over to the States. Turned out, all the boats avoided that course.... Long story short, bridge was shit, bridge is gone now, nice new low bridge is built and way more efficient.

    Was that when there was like seven or eight ships at anchor on the lake?

    Hell, I worked with a guy one time-
    If he ate a can of beans, pointed his arse to an intercom mike.........
    He'd make these mighty horns sound like a VW

    Sorry but I think your "salutes" in actuality are signals requesting a bridge opening (1 long, 2 short). This seems to be a tradition in the Great Lakes as such communications are handled elsewhere by VHF.

    • @alaricdogface
      @alaricdogface  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah back in the day that was the signal but now they signal by radio at about a mile and a half out, then they sometimes salute the bridge or the crowd as they come in.

      Lot's of maritime traditions are disappearing. Holland American Line cruise ships no longer display the "Hotel" pennant indicating a pilot is on board.

    • @alaricdogface
      @alaricdogface  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but at least it is a little safer to sail these days.

    • @mnsirens
      @mnsirens 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fred Patch It's actually meant to say "Thank You for the Lift", since the bridge is already lifted by the time it gets there. Then the bridge responds as a "You're Welcome"

      Nate G Almost all of this was ships going under the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth MN. It's actually a very popular tourist attraction in Minnesota
