  • Turn up your volume. With a mighty blast of the horn, the Great Lakes boat, Canadian Transport enters the channel to the Duluth, MN. harbor. It was headed to the DM&IR ore dock for a load of taconite. The lift bridge answer the salute with a blast of its own horn.
    The Canadian Transport was built in 1979 for Upper Lakes Shipping. It is equiped with two MAN 8L40/54A diesel engines. They are factory rated at 5000hp each, but now derated to around 3900hp each. The ship is 730' long, and has a beam of 75'. It weighs in at 26900 tons, and can carry 35100 tons of iron ore. Upper Lakes Shipping sold their fleet to Algoma Central Corp. The Canadian Transport has been renamed the Algoma Transport. More information on this, and other ships can be found on the "Boatnerd" site.

    Note the light in sync with the lift bridge salute, most ships have this too, but only visible at night...

    they use them to signal back to the boat captain that he acknowledges that he is about to be passed through/under. this is especially important on draw/lift bridges.

    Got to agree with you on that warren! I would just love to make another trip up there again in the near future. If only the gas prices would come down. The last time I was there gas was 1,19 per gallon. Big difference from what it is today... Thanks for watching...

    very nice video!
    I do have to ask, as I'm unfamiliar with ship operations - why would one put a horn on a bridge? Does it serve a similar purpose as a foghorn on a lighthouse?

    My parents and many other family members of mine went to UMD, and every time a Ship came in, you can Hear the Salutes from the Ships and the Bridge echoing off the valley walls

    Take some pictures because Algoma Central bought Upper lake shipping in February-March 2011. So needless to say that the names and logos are no longer sailing after 80 years.

      Actually not much compared to any other transportation method. The biggest tankers have a small bike engine comparatively to their size.

    How many crew members typically on such a ship? Where are their quarters? Where can I view an interior tour or just a diagram of what the inside looks like?

      The William A Irvin in Duluth, MN is a retired 600 foot class (610') that was retired. Typically the ore ships are around 1000' now with 700 foot international sea faring ships being common. Crew size varies by a range of 15-30.
      The Irvin is getting repaired/refurbished at dry dock as I type this while slip repairs are completed. Will be open to the public again in late spring of 2019.

    Not a problem. Its still a shame that those ships keeps changing hands like that. We're so use to be able to identify them just by the sound of their engines or horn. The best example would be my favorite.....Algocen...JW Shelley and now Phoenix Star. Do you know if she retains that beautiful blue and white scheme ?

    Why do these ships sound two different horns?. We don't seem to do this in the UK.

    • @1jackdk
      @1jackdk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its written in the remarks about the video clip. The ship salutes the bridge, and the operator of the lift bridge returns the salute with the bridge horn.

      I miss her. Hated to see her career end. But the captain and her crew brought her to Port Colburne on her own power, not towed by tugs. I’m sure it was a sad moment for her crew. At least she lives on through many videos and pictures. A veteran of the Great Lakes.
