EXQUISITE FIND AND EXQUISITE PERFORMANCE . Both the music and the performer are vastly underrated. This obviously owes much to Bach but is also unmistakably Sibelius and presages his fantastic violin concerto. Powerful and stunningly competent work by the 22 yr, old Sibelius.( PS The Shepherd School is also home to another fantastic soloist- William VerMeulin, Principle Horn.)
I don't play an instrument unfortunately but love classical music. Listening to you makes me realize one doesn't have to be able to play music to appreciate great musical skill and talent - mesmerizing to listen to.
Hey you can always learn one!! I hope you get the chance to...playing music is a really amazing thing!! Even if you have no experience I am sure you can start learning! I I really hope you can :)
In my experience in both psychology and musical practice, learning does indeed make a huge difference in the internalization and cognitive schematization of music. By playing it you . There's a reason for which toddlers that watch tv tend to lack hundreds of words in their linguistic repertoire compared with kids that don't. Imitation, a goal/criteria, failing to reach it and receiving feedback and molding the response leads one to notice and understand things that were hidden. There's a reason kids that are taught to play instruments tend to develop more linguistically, because their working memory, attention, ability to hear rhythm, cadence, accents, sounds, is increased after exercising their aural skills in music. So you're right, you don't need to be able to play music to appreciate skill and talent, but if you play music, you will hear more, understand more, and appreciate more.
Hei everybody, the music has been published, and they have actually discovered one more variation which was missing for long time, so now the original work is completed.
Very interesting.... Sibelius has for his orchestra works these modern harmonies and sounds.... and now this solo piece, that sounds very traditional and reminds me of baroque and renaissance music. Must be the arpeggios.....
Wonderful music. Wish Sib had have composed a cello concerto. The opening to Pohjola's Daughter I always thought could have been one for a concerto. I just hope at least he didn't burn anything of this calibre in the great pyre of the 1940s that Aino recorded in her diary .
I think that this superbly played performance makes about as good a case as can be made for a work which seems to me more willed into existence than genuinely inspired.
This guy is SO underrated! I saw his recording of him playing Caprice 24 AMAZING, and this wonderful piece, and so much more! In my oppinion this guy is better than yo yo ma, just probably not AS famous lol.
There are thousands of professional musicians in the world. They're not any less great than the ones who just happen to get lucky. 99% of the "omg this person is the best in the world" is just placebo. So many talented, amazing, hard working musicians who are all just as good.
Yo Yo ma is def a bit overrated in my opinion. I am a cellist and respect him as a great musician and amazing cellist but there are a bunch that are not as famous that I like more and that seem to be more unique and special...Stephen Isserlis is a great example of this. But to each his own! There are amazing musicians everywhere!
Really amazing interpretation!!!! Thumbs up! Does anybody knows where to find the score to this piece? I've already tried everywhere, but still haven't found anything. Thanks.
This needs to get published. It is so valuable for every cellist in this world!
Brinton Averil Smith, you are the king! You should be playing in the best halls of the World!
that intonation is to die for bro
Gotta get that good if you wanna perform pieces like this for an audience!

Great playing, very beautiful.
Omg amazing
Beautiful playing
The difference between a real cello and a cheap cello? The A string actually sounds pleasant and not like someone is dying via twang.
Very nice !
Thanks

Well, Sibelius was only 20 when he wrote this, and it took him several more years to come into his own as a composer.
