I understand not using wire for the trellising. I used wire for the grapes and also for the raspberries, through the years it becomes so loose; you can't make it tight enough. I put my cuttings on the ground around the trunks of the grape vines for use as mulch. It's so hot and dry here, any mulch is better than none (there is no lawn or grass of any kind), and my mulch of vines is very thick (a foot) since I've been pruning for years.

Of course, here in "sunny" California my grapes got started early this year. So while you're pruning, I just harvested all my grapes! My concord vine of 2 summers gave a huge harvest. I, too, have pruned for years and really didn't know what I was doing, though I'd tried to find out from friends who have wine grapes. At the time I had Thompson green, and red. Those are cut out now, making room for 6 concords. I decided this year that I would prune so that, exactly as your neighbor and yourself said, the energy goes into the fruit. Of course, you must keep it up until harvest. I think it worked beautifully. Just leaving several inches beyond the cluster. I pruned so much. It was worth it. I don't know why my grapes, and also happened to our apricots, have little sweetness, little flavor, and the grapes could stand to be juicier (bigger). I think I need to pay better attention to watering. But will juice my grapes today and add sugar. I got inspired because of you and your vines years ago, when you first showed them to us. I finally got them in and am so grateful to you. Am keeping the comfrey moist and in half shade and half sun in the soil. We're heading back into the hundreds F for another week. Maybe that will help. Thanks for all your generosity and help. Also, got my russets and yukons in the ground in February. They are dying down right now, nearly ready for harvest. Yours look awesome!

the old timers use to say to prune grapes in months with an R in them. We have a winery near us and they prune in Feb.

Thanks for another great gardening video. I shall prune mine accordingly. There are nice clusters of grapes on them but the birds and ground squirrels seem to get them before I can!

Anyone have advice on how to deter the birds and squirrels from eating all the grapes we work so hard to grow!?💁
