Drone Mapping with Multiple Batteries, Map Pilot Pro & Dronelink th-cam.com/video/B6osz-cBw2o/w-d-xo.html
This video should actually be on the MME website. Their instructions fall off a cliff at the point where one wants to actually move to autonomous flight, IMO. This video fills in that key blank spot, IMO
This is so helpful! I didn't think DJI Mini 2 would be able to do this as well, thought only the higher ends drones were the only ones able to
If your doing a school project or need basic measurements then yeah this work perfect. If you needing something more accurate and precise you will need a higher end drone preferably with RTK and this is going to cost 10 or thousands in additional equipment in training but you will be charging a hell of a lot more to capture this data.
Thanks. This contributed to my research on which drone to buy for mapping, and that doesn't fall out of the A1 category
Mini 2 still has a purpose. Thanks to SDK
So when you set the flight for the mapping it just flies by itself , how do you know when to bring it back?@DimmyV
Off to finally fly my first capture mission and this video has been really, really helpful, so well made and clearly explained. I feel so much more confident now, having watched it, of knowing what to expect. Thanks so much for doing such a great job 👍
Thank you
Really helpful stuff, was about to do a 2d mapping project manually but I'm excited to try this out, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
amazing software. looks so easy to use. will be trying soon
Great stuff! Well explained. Thank You!
Your welcome 🍻
Thhis is a great video, I'm jjust starting out and the video gave me a lot of informattion thank you
You deserve my Sub. This is fantastic
Good content right there. I’m happy to subscribe.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed, I’ll try to get the dronelink app soon 🍻
Very Informative video...A must watch for the surveyors.
👏🏼
Ever thought about adding the bit where you download what Drones it's looking for? And pairing it up for the first time? Because that's where I needed help
I will keep this in mind when I get going again there has been a few people who have asked this. So far deleting and reinstalling the app is the simplest fix or the changing the cable.
Thanks a lot for a great, clearly explained video
Most welcome!
Good video
Thanks
WOW NICE THANKS FOR THE INFO SIR👍👍👍
No problem ✌🏼
This works for simple recreational use; for survey-grade use (i.e. cm accuracy) the Mini 2 results are very limited. This is mainly due to the rolling shutter of the Mini 2 camera; a global shutter is basically a must in order to achieve the best orthophotos and pointclouds. You can sort of simulate a global shutter with the Mini 2 by stopping up before each camera shot, but this of course takes much more time and consumes A LOT of power.
Yes I agree this video was merely just for educational use to get the principles, the are obviously far more in depth process involved to get accurate data. If this was for a school project then this would be sufficient. I would love to do a more indepth video on this but right now I'm going down the route of FPV as its more fun flying experience. Appreciate your input and thanks for watching. Happy Saturday ☀️
@@DimmyV Still! The visual results are impressive with the Mini 2 🤩
Hi, thank you for the excellent drone mapping video. I use Map Pilot Pro with my DJI Air 2s to do missions for mapping. I then use WebODM to produce the 2D&3D maps. The new DJI SDK for the Mini 3 with the Plus battery will be an outstanding drone to do mapping using Map Pilot Pro.
Thank You. The DJI Air 2S is one of my favourite drones, waiting on DJI to bring out the Air 3 (I hope). I’ve not heard WebODM is this free… I’m actually looking into making a new video soon (added to the list of others) and only budget/free option i know is Maps Made Easy. Drone Deploy, Propeller Aero are quite pricey but they are legitimately better with all in one workflow. I would add Rock Robotic too. Yes the SDK for Mini 3 is in BETA right now which does mean will it be the better choice to map over the Air 2S, especially when sub250 for smaller projects in airport zones.
How are you liking web odm
I have the mini 3 with smart controller. Any advise on how I can do the same thing?
@djegaruchick6093 the sdk had been released so the Mini 3 is supported
You think there is a way to create the program on a laptop and usb transfer it to the controller or the drone itself?
Great video and done at a nice pace - well done! I'm interested to know where you got your adapter for the ipad connecting to the controller?
Thanks Phil, I got mine from Amazon a while back, this isn't the exact one but same brand and different design. amzn.to/46vBQDL Remember to get a longer cable too.
What tablet were you using? And does it require a mobile data connection or just GPS location on?
Hey Sean. Appreciate it. It’s the iPad Air 3 and I just hotspot to my iPhone for a connection. I believe I have a short how to do this for the Air 3 which is the same.
th-cam.com/users/shortsXc9qu6mHtsM?si=K2g1bbSkSeM6j36y
Can accurate measurements be taken using this to measure a roof, for example?
I reckon possible but you would need a reference of a known measurement.
Great job. Quick and informative. Question: I want to run Map Pilot Pro and I have three DJI drones, the Air-2 S, mini 3 pro and mini 4 pro. I’m trying to get my mini drones to run the software.
Thanks. Neither Mini 3 or 4 compatible yet.
i can use dji mini2 for sitemark to upload photos of fotovoltaic park ?
What do you mean by sitemark?
Is better then mavric 3 multispectral ?
No I doubt this will be better than Mavic 3
thanks for the video. why does my dji mini 2 cannot detect to map pilot pro during the flight mission. ive save the mission but when i upload my saved mission plan it cannot dect my dji mini 2. is there simething to change in the setting. Hope you answer my problem. Thanks
Hey Joel. Have you restarting the drone by turning it on and off? I know that’s basic but sometimes the simple stuff works. I don’t believe I had this issue when I was testing. Maybe check the latest firmware of the drone. I would check the community forum with maps made easy see if there’s anything similar and try contact them if my initial suggestions don’t work.
hi sir. thank you foe the response. the delear of the dji said to me that dont upgrade the firmware if there is a new firmware available
Hi, very interesting video, thank you very much, can i do same using dji mini 2 se?
I just had a quick look at the supported drones and unfortunately the Mini 2 SE is not supported.

bro where did you get the ipad mount? ive bought several and returned them all. that looks like an amaizng piece of equipment please share.
So the one I have isn’t available anymore but the closest one I can find is this amzn.to/49LG6iY
It has 4.5 stars, slight variation but similar.
Very useful info 👍
I can’t wait to explore more of this. You going to try out Robo?
@@DimmyV I would like to try. Waiting for the better weather 🥶🥶
@@robodrone5662 yeah I know how that feels when I was living in Canada. Not only for the drone but you too trying to fly with gloves is hard
Could you measure off this work flow?
You can measure but it won't be accurate, you need to reference a known measurement.
Thanks for the great tutorial. I have a mini 2 and would like to make a topo map of a friends hobby farm. Do you if that is possible with the mini 2? Thankyou
Hey Paul it is possible but in terms of accuracy it won't be as accurate compared to drone that has better camera i.e. LIDAR and RTK. If you need just a rough idea sure but if accuracy is needed you would need better drone
Super. Thx!
Your Welcome
Great video bro rate the content 💪🏽
Thanks 🙌🏼
Would you know why it is constantly searching for drone and not detecting the location? Mini 3 pro
Which device are you using because Mini 3 pro is compatible with Android atm
@@DimmyV Yeah I am using a Samsung. I got it to work once but since have attempted to use it twice with no luck. It states its looking for drone. I have followed your steps in using the fly app to get it up in the air and then switch over to MMS app but cant seem to get it to locate drone, odd.
Hey man, thanks for the video & explanation.
Can I ask... Say you had a basic subscription, so 7 maps. Once you've downloaded the processed map. How do you share it with a client, like how do they open it? Can you save the exact job settings for over 7 maps, say if it was repeated flights in the sane location?
Its just on their website even the elite package only gives you 30 maps, so suggests to me you dont use the maps made easy to share and save settings within that 7-30 as thats a big limitation.
Cheers.
If you are going down this route then I would recommend something more robust like DroneDeploy. If you're mapping 30 projects a month then you should be charging and it will be more than enough to cover the cost. You entering the realm of more business development too which is great.
I would check out @DylanGorman channel for more info and who has courses that may be able to get you to the next stage where you are meant to be.
I hope this helps.
@@DimmyV Thanks for the reply.
I'm nowhere yet. Just looking into it. Yeah if you can get 30 jobs a month then happy days for when it comes to upgrading to something else. I just wonder by their wording if it's that you can process 30 maps a month but you can keep more on their database, so a client can check month vs month . Unless they expire like the free ones :s
But yeah maybe it's just a real taster type platform.
Yes I watch some of his videos, the main software he uses is like 4 grand a year and a lot more involved that wouldn't be needed.
So yeah, use this as a taster then find a more intermediate platform.
Cheers
@@Marc-io6pv I think it’s a per month but there is also a storage limitation. The amount of photos required adds up fast.
Also 4k for the year is not bad considering 1 job can cost that. Minus any other expenses like a drone. This is where doing a profit and loss summary will help you evaluate the business for profitability. Also make you look better are you done the numbers.
We’ll get there 🍻
@@DimmyV Well as a startup it's a lot ;) Don't get me wrong I know the cost of commercial kit, I've had & got commercial printers and you've always got to front up.
Just the way I was looking at getting into it was more of a photogrammetry lite type service like your video. So people who want up to date maps for sites or estate agents etc but not as involved or technicallly critical as a full service for surveyors, architects etc and where Drone deploy, RTK drones and base stations come in.
I might have it wrong and this type of service isn't a thing and the big companies will offer all of it so no point but I don't know :p
Does this work with the DJI mini 2 se?

can we access contour function in maps made easy website??
contour lines
It’s been a while since I’ve used this application and what updates they have made. I’m not sure how accurate it is but if I was going to go down this route professionally I would look at Drone Deploy and invest in a drone with LiDar and RTK.
@@DimmyV thanks!
It’s cool tool but I constantly bump into the same issue every time when my mission takes more than 1 battery. Basically, I start the mission no problem and as it returns home for battery change, it obviously disconnects but once I choose to continue the mission, drone starts to react weirdly (going up in spirals and loosing connection) and every time which makes it useless. Any ideas? *DJI Mini2
That is interesting, the area I mapped was small but when I was doing my research with maps made easy it made it straight forward with battery swaps for those that need 1 or more batteries. This is something I would like to test when I move back to Canada. Weather has been awful in England as well as suitable location. I would email maps made easy to see what they say.
@@DimmyV yeah, it is very strange because I don’t find any troubleshoot in forum about this nor in google search. Good point, I’ll contact them directly ✌️
Is that DJI mini 2 or DJI mini 2 SE drone? can someone give me full specification link for this one? please

Try turning off the drone and control and rebooting the app. Controller first then drone
How did you use your iPad their website says only android?! My says only part not connected is controller :(
I just download the app and it worked. Have you tried it?
@@DimmyV so now I got my controller to work :) , but now can’t find Mini 3 in the Model menu! One of these days I’m gonna finally figure this out 😅

for 2d you could probably just stich in PS or LR. sweet vid
Normally in construction editing mapping photos isn't really needed to make it look pretty but I guess an auto edit just to add contrast can help. The photos are JPEG to save space as it ends up taking 100 or 1000s of photos. For a regular pano I use LR and 360 I use Pano stitcher
@@DimmyV I need to map an area out, might give this a go
Thx dude
Can i mapping with dji neo 🫡
The DJI Neo is not suitable for mapping nor is the sdk out to try for shits and giggles. I would chose a suitable drone if you want to go down this route
@@DimmyV ❤️
if you preplan the flight does the app depend on gps satelites or does it need cell service, i need to look at a area where i can get satelites but can get service on the phone,
So the drone would still need gps for geo tagging the photos and stable flight. If you are wanting to download the map for offline use then yes that works. Ideally better to have cell service
@@DimmyV your a legend looking for missing Person so cell service is out the question
Ok hope all I well and you find them
Thanks for the video! Very informative. However, the app is giving me this error that theres a flight start error. How do I solve this?
Thanks Gabriel. What’s the error it’s giving you? I would trying turning off and on. I would always turn the remote on first then the drone.

I ran the mission and every time it inky takes 2 pictures of where it took off from the whole mission it just did its course didnr snap a single photo
When the drone sets off it is normal for it to calibrate by taking 1-3 photos of its take off then beginning capturing. I would try deleting and reinstalling the app and then reconnect the drone see if that works.
hi bro.. can i use th is to mini3pro ?
The SDK has not been released yet so this won’t work with either Mini 3 or Mini 3 Pro. It would normally be a year after or next replacement.
So I take it their is nothing like this for the dji Mavic mini pro 3?
Unfortunately not compatible.
Bro why is that you don't recommend mini 2 for mapping
Iam a freelance pilot I want to buy mini 2
Is it too worst
What drone you recommend for me
In this budget or 20% higher?
The Mini 2 is capable, doesn't harm in trying but might be better having a drone with a 20mp camera, and the sensors will help a lot especially as the camera is facing down the whole time. I would opt for an Air 2S or secondhand Mavic 2.
Hi , I take a one error."Oh snap! There was an error accessing the image tags. " How solve?
Not sure what you mean. If you can describe it to me better. It sounds like a permissions thing.
Hi can DJI mini 3 does the mapping.thks
The Mini 3 needs the SDK release first. It’s in beta testing only for android atm.
How accurate is the data?
This was for educational purpose. Depending on client deliverables you could possibly use this for simple stuff but if you are looking for accuracy then you would need to go down route of a high quality drone and using GCPs to accurately map an area which is more work but more money. @dylangorman has a course you can take that covers this. I hope this helps ✌🏼
What the min spec for the computer I would need
The mapping is not generated on your computer but in the cloud.

---
Hello and thank you. A 3D model will depend on the deliverables for client and what is required from the 3D map. Although the Mini 2 can do it the Air 2S will be a better choice. If this is purely for recreational purpose then Mapsmadeeasy will be fine. If this is for a commercial purpose (for money) I would look into Dronelink (see my other video) or Dronedeploy.
can you help me i have a dji mini 2 and i can't start i don't know why my RC CONTROLLER is not detected. preview with the camera I have the battery status showing the satellites showing and I can't start tell me what I'm doing wrong I will be very grateful !!!! (I will add that the dji application has no problem detecting everything and I fly without a problem)
I would check the cable is connected properly. I would also try deleting and reinstalling the app. Boot the controller first and then the drone.
deleting and reinstalling the app helped, thanks
I thought I did something wrong in the settings thenks
Amazing. It’s always the simplest of things 😂 glad it worked 🚁
Have you ever thought about paying a subscription to DJI, let me know what you think - th-cam.com/video/woCP8J0lkuA/w-d-xo.html
🤔
Many thanks for this handy vid - wonder if you can save me some time and potential headache with some further related info -
1) -I need to map a steep topographic slope that has numerous trees with substantial canopies - can i intervene on the flight path/view camera when the drome is following a path as i may need to fly lower than the trees for accurate data i can use , as the tree canopies will obscure the actual land terrain for the 3d
2)- can the files produced be integrated into architectural software preferably SketchUp, if not lumion - and if so what file type should I save as (if that is how to do it/an option) I know the number of polygons will be very complex for sketchup- but that's another topic of how to simplify which I am researching unless you can spare a further handy tip on the same.
Thanks in advance!
Thor - from Kenya - architect/design with a new mini 2 !
Hey Thor glad you enjoyed the video.
For your first question, no you cannot adjust the camera during the process. This becomes more complex as the terrain is covered by trees where you would need to scan the area using LIDAR that can penetrate foliage and will likely work with a land surveyor for accurate data and use RTK and GCPs.
As for your second point I am not sure as I’ve merely create the video for beginners. Again as this is more professional work you will likely be better off using Drone Deploy or Propellor Aero.
I hope this helps I know @DylanGorman has a course that may be of interest to you.
Let me know how you get on will be super interested how you work around this challenge
@@DimmyV thanks, limited options here in Kenya and the drone was hard to get in , I'll see what I can figure out and revert, I understand there is post flight software that can use manually taken pics of an area, I'm interested in tree trunks and land slope as it will be for used for a below canopy, above ground , multiple platform treehouse restaurant design then build (all on my plate) and past drone surveyors have not collected data below the canopy (which is crucial for my requirements) Anyway, appreciate the time/response and I will let you know if successful. If not, I'll be getting out the dumpy level and searching for the time I'll need. Haha
Cheers, look forward to more videos.
