  • Nissan's LEAF has rejuvenated its all-electric proposition in second generation guise.
The Nissan LEAF has always been a car that divides opinion. Some love this fully electric vehicle for its bold engineering and surprisingly enjoyable driving dynamics, but to date, many other green-minded potential buyers have struggled to make a case for it. That could change thanks to the improvements made to this second generation model, which offers a further big enhancement in driving range and some really clever new technology.

This car is by far the most under-rated EVs out there, which is ironic since it is the original... essentially. Everybody is so wrapped up in RAPIDGate issues that they pretty much write off all other benefits this car has over the competition. The level of refinement on this Gen 2 version has increased exponentially. The ride comfort is outstanding for a compact EV. But all too many other reviewers use the characteristics that make it so comfortable to use as a negative in that they limit the sportiness of handling. Very biased and misleading. It is quite simply still the most practical and useful EV on the market for daily driving and area trips.

I have now owned and operated this model for three months, in NZ. I bought it s/h as new models here are £30,000 with no government grant available. Nor do you get a free charger. 50% of all BEVs in NZ are s/h Nissan Leafs (mainly from Japan, mine is from the UK, which has the level 2 charger, Japanese Leafs don't) It's my only car. I am retired and live in a small country town 80 kms from Wellington. I can travel to Wellington and back, the only long trip I regularly do, motor 30 kms around the city and arrive home with 12-15% battery. The route includes a 550 metre steep hill in each direction (total 1100 metres or 3600 feet, a few feet higher than Mt Snowdon in Wales!!). I did not fit a level 2 charger but a "commando" socket with 3.6 kw - over the 10 hours of low cost overnight electricity available here (Meridian) you can fill from 0% to 1005 exactly in this time. If you mainly do country road and main road driving and you stick to around 95 kph you will easily get 200 kms + from this car averaging around 15 kWh per 100 km - you will definitely get quite a bit more in mainly city driving. I make a simple range calculation of 1% = 2kms (it's actually a bit better then this) However, not mentioned in this video is "rapid gate", the problem that the lack of a battery cooling system restricts fast charging on repeated use on long journeys, the batteries get hot and the BMS has to protect them. One long journey I did 550 km with three fast charges proved this to be an issue with charging speeds on the last charge down to the low 20 kw - the first fast charge is no problem, so basically any distance up to nearly 400km shouldn't be an issue either. . There is a software update available to owners in the Europe and the US which partially rectifies this problem. So whilst this car is very good, and I'd never go back to an ICE, if you regularly expect to do longer journeys and use a fast charger I cannot recommend this car, nor the 62 kWh version which is very expensive now in comparison to its better battery managed rivals. You'd be much better looking at the Kia e-Nero, or the Hyundai models, if you can get one, that is. The new VW also looks to be a worthwhile option. Each owner's requirement is unique, but the main take home point is that this car, with its nominally somewhat restricted range, is more than adequate as an only car for most people, even those living in the countryside.

After looking and/or driving the other options (inc Jaguar iPace) we recently added a 2019 LEAF to our 2011. Brilliant job Nissan. It spears to have vastly improved all the items I had complaints about on the 1st generation. Drives like a car costing twice the price, and excellent tech package. It's 150 mile range (what we get, mostly freeway) is plenty, and rather than pay for an extra 20kwh that we'd never need we preferred to put that money into the SL version with Leather, Bose, and tech package ie things we'd use every day.

Did you notice that the air quality in major cities around the world increased. I long for the total demise of gas powered vehicles.

Phillip Carlson bought a Nissan Leaf in August 2012, which cost about $53,500. It’s seven years old today, and it’s worth maybe $12,000 - if you can find someone dumb enough to buy it. Let’s let him tell the story.
“I bought an electric car from Nissan with 5 years warranty on the battery. They claimed 175km range. From new I only ever got 120km. Now I can BARELY get 35-40km during winter or even 25km if I use the heater. The warranty says the battery is bad if it drops to 8 out of 12 bars, which mine has.
“I took it in and they claim the battery is totally fine and there’s nothing wrong with it and gave me a $33,000 invoice for a new one!!!!! Nissan just won’t listen and I’ve run out of all hope. I paid $53,500 for this car and it’s pretty useless now.” - Phillip Carlson

Excellent and super detailed review. Nissan NZ brought the first gen into the country but sales were pitiful. This year we will get this model and I think it'll do much better. I drove a used import model last week and was super impressed with its ease and snappy pick up. We are also supposed to be getting the Tesla Model 3 this year too, we are reservation holders but if things don't turn out, we will look at the LEAF. The NZ government is supposed to be putting an incentive package for EV uptake soon, finally.

I'm somewhat surprised at the constant comments about lack of rapid charge points, so much so that I had to check the date of the video. Polar+, Lidl, Instavolt, Nissan dealerships plus Bannantyne Gyms , Shell (yes really. The petrol supplier :) ) and several other companies supply nine rapid charging points from free to expensive within 30 miles of my home and 109 on my journeys from Norfolk to Cornwall ( in a 30KW 2017 Black Edition MK 1 Leaf btw). Tesco are committed to installing rapids at all their supesrtores over the coming year. I'm excluding the various types of Tesla chargepoints and also the so called "fast" (3KW to 11KW) chargepoints. The Leaf satnav lists all different types IF you switch the types on in the settings (you hadn't as far as I could see in the fleeting shot ). The icons are different. That apart, one of the best and most honest reviews of my next car. ;)

I just bought my 2015 LEAF three days ago . It has less than 10,000 miles. I have never owned a electric car. I have an S model, even though people say stay away from it. I had a bunch of reviews on You Tube give it a negative review. Pros: very easy to drive. It is so quiet that I rarely hear it. As a former commercial driver, I have seen many of these fuel driven cars whiz by. The LEAF is better utilized as a city car. I can take it out away from home, but the lack of charging stations in New Mexico and other states, these trips are not feasible. I love the room, trunk space, and inside leg and shoulder room. Personally, I live in an apartment, so charging at home for me as not an option. Because I can’t, the location of public charging stations is very important thing for me. My roommate does not care for it, but I look at the money savings for no fuel. I love the speakers and the interior of the car. I also love the fact that I can get into and out of tight spaces with this car. I am just looking to stay with this car for awhile. I have an extended warranty for this car. I may trade this in at a later time for a later model, but not right now. To be sure, this car has a very short range, but this can be overcome. It can also be good if your state allows the use of a car pool lane because it is an electric car. I also recommend doing research if you really want to know about the LEAF. There is so much information out here for this car. The Nissan connect app does not work for the S model, but I found out enough to run it. There is no lumbar support, although the front and rear seats and the steering wheel heat up. That is my take on my car. I am just sending out my opinion on the LEAF I own. Peace!

9:17 - B setting provides more aggressive regeneration (and as you said, less disk braking). There will be a version later this year with a 64 kWh battery, sold alongside the 2019 with the same battery size as the 2018 (at least here in the US). Other than that, there will be very few changes to the 2019 model so this video will be relevant for quite a while. I mention this in response to comments which says it's outdated.
Regarding cost, my wife converted from an 11 year old Mercedes E-350 to the 2018 Leaf and we went from averaging $65 a month in gas costs to $16 a month in electricity.
Overall one of the most comprehensive reviews I've seen of the Leaf.

Quick 50 kWh charging points are at all motor way service stations. You need to know this. There is more than a few. It you look on the screen of charging points the little icons on the right of the screen will tell you if it is a type 2 or rapid charger. The cable and plug means a type 2, a rapid charge is represented by a pump and socket.

My biggest gripe about EV's at the moment is the infrastructure. Right now on the pathway between Tucson AZ and Phoenix AZ there are exactly... 1... operational DC fast chargers. All the others are the slower 5KW Lv2 charging stations. On my app it said there were 5 along the path I chose, but 4 of them where inoperable.
So the problem isn't that my 2014 Nissan leaf has only about 80 mi (128 km) of range at full charge, it's that the infrastructure in place requires me to take 8hrs to do a 2hr trip.

The reason he was getting lower range was it was under 50f or 11c.. EV's don't go as far in colder fall/winter times. Something he totally missed/didn't talk about. So my question is, did he pre-heat before disconnecting from a charger or did he start out 'cold'.. which would account for the 120-130 mile range vs 150-170 most get in summer with the same car..

Nissan wants around $10,000 or more for a new battery for a Leaf. They just raised the price. There was even one case of a Nissan dealer wanting $33,000. in Australia for a new battery and the owner had been complaining about the loss of range well before the warranty period was over. He had bought it new for $54,000. Nissan Leaf is not a very well designed EV system. No cooling built-in for the battery and that results in accelerated battery degradation. From dealers that will not cover warranty, rust issues with a lot of Nissan products are Nissan a good bet? The only way Nissan re-calls is if they get hit with a class-action lawsuit and they lose. I would say shop elsewhere for a vehicle. I am a DIY guy and the home fleet consists of an Infiniti M, Subaru Outback and a Toyota Corolla. For reliability, the Toyota wins hands down. It is also a vehicle that is easy to work on and a huge aftermarket parts availability. The Infiniti is a pain in the ass to work on. The Subaru is better but still a lot harder to work on vs the Toyota. Toyota Corolla is now available as a hatchback and a coming small SUV, the Corolla Cross. For most people, reliability is their #1 concern. You get that with Toyota, plus they recall for everything. If you want a car that will last and not break the bank on maintenance the Corolla variants will do that for you.EVs don't interest me as I don't want to mess with a vehicle with a 300-volt battery. That kind of voltage will kill you so you would have to take it back to a dealer who will charge you a fortune for parts and labour to work on it. People that say EVs are great for the environment. I question that as there is a lot of lithium, cobalt, nickel and copper in those batteries. That requires mining. The nature of mining means that it pollutes. Lithium and cobalt are mined in countries with poor environmental standards. The process used for lithium mining uses a lot of water in countries like Chile that has a scarcity of water. That water and soil become polluted. In the Congo same thing for cobalt mining. Plus both countries use child labour. The EV proponents say the cost of EV batteries will come down.No they won't, the cost of the base materials will rise if they become popular.EVs are only about 2.8% of the vehicle world SOM market if demand increases then the base materials will rise. More mining pollution. Ask yourself why did Nissan raise the cost of a replacement battery from about $5000. to about $10,000? Plus if you have an EV with a bad battery it will probably wind up at a junkyard where the thing will rot and pollute groundwater. A well maintained Corolla will last 20 years, a Nissan Leaf maybe 10 years. A lot of energy goes into making a car. So just how great are EVs for the environment. Plus it depends on the energy source used to generate electrical power. China has a lot of EVs but China also uses a lot of coal to generate that electrical power. So please don't tell me EVs don't pollute.

@@Brian-om2hh Then you have a bunch of old cells and a few new ones. The old cells will just die out too. Why didn't Nissan have a plan in place where you could just get a new refurbished battery and they keep the core. That would have made the vehicle "greener". What Nissan is saying by not having a replacement battery service and recycling the cores is they care more about soaking their customers than reducing GHG emissions.

Having owned several cars with fully adjustable steering wheels I have found that they get set in one position and never moved again, even with changes of driver. I consider the extra expense a complete waste.
I run a 2.zero, just coming up to 13000 miles since April, Average cost per mile 3.4 pence. My Citroen C3 costs 13 ppm, at Jan 19 prices. 46 mpg. long term av.
The only downside I have found with owning an EV is that my mileage has gone up as the car is such a pleasure to drive.

Was really enjoying your review of the Nissan Leaf but.... after 16 mins through there have been numerous jibes at tesla which are just plainly absurd! To vex my frustration at just one , the price point.. there is plenty of good reason for tesla to start with a luxury priced vehicle. This is the price point where you can make a really compelling ev. Also it allowed tesla to afford to build a comprehensive worldwide charging network which none of the major manufacturers have done... at all. Why couldn't you just give a comprehensive review of this vehicle without feeling the need to be spiteful about your inability to afford the actual ev you would want to own? An unfortunate down vote here.

On cost he is totally wrong this car is about £10,000 more than the average good spec family car, a cost difference that can't be saved in fuel differences over it's average 5 year 10,000 mile typical ownership. Everybody does long journeys sometimes, why buy a car that can't do everything you want. Rapidgate ? What about the 30 kw leaf, what about Hyundai Kona etc.
A very poor report. No mention of slow charging at rapid chargers taking 40 minutes or so, poor charger reliability. The car's charger location map doesn't always know where the nearest charger is and can't direct you to it because it is totally useless not being kept any where near up to date. My recommendation is to wait until good range, able, electric cars are available at an equivalent price to ice, all the electric cars available at the moment aren't.

And 99.9% have never even touched an EV, never mind owned one. Here in the UK at least, depreciation ( I'm assuming you mean the worth of the vehicle?) is not so much of an issue at the moment. Even very small EV's, such as might be used for city commuting, are retaining their values very well. Of course this is likely to recede as EV adoption increases. I'm going to wait until the technology allows for a 400-500 mile range, with a charge time of say 10 minutes. Then these cars will be a sensible alternative to a petrol or diesel car in terms of practicality. 40 minutes to get 80% charge is pretty good in EV terms, but still a long time to hang around getting fuel in the car. Full tank to give me 450 mile range in my old petrol Skoda? 5 minutes. The EV that can match that sort of convenience will sell like hot cakes.

Gas-consumers use electricity. EV-drivers use no gas for their vehicles. However, you can diversify electrical power sources; solar, hydro, nuclear, wind, etc. How will you find new fuel? You can't. Also, you can reduce your electric usage in a variety of ways. How do you reduce your fuel usage but for efficient cars? You're still using electric at home, work, and everywhere else you go.
EVs are the future, with cleaner, more sustainable power sources. Fuel in gas-burning cars is based on a finite resource, with usage that gives you little control with respect to consumption, price, scarcity (artificial in some cases), etc.
