News about 2 years ago I was at a Christmas Fair in a town near us and I had my Vietnam veteran hat on. A high school kid and his girlfriend came up to me and said thank you for your service. Brought me to tears

Donna, did you go to Purdue? I remember being on campus when I did these interviews. I really liked the school. Did you know Lawrence served as the Alumni Association Executive Director from 1988-2004? He is 82 today. I am trying to locate him.

Phil, many thanks for your kind words. Lawrence Preo's story was tucked away in my archives like so many of them are. I'm ashamed to say I haven't even listened to it since I interviewed him 14 years ago. I was very moved of how raw and real this interview was. I am trying to locate Mr. Preo. He's 82 now. @@VoicesofHistory I’m absolutely certain that if he saw this comment section, it would give him a lot of closure. It’s one of the few places these vets can go and see a collective of people who truly appreciate their service. On another note, knowing that you’ve got an archive of these men’s testimonies that will survive all of us, would most certainly give you a sense of a life well lived, that I envy, to say the least. You, and organizations like USC’s Shoah are two of a very small groups of organizations that legitimize social media (IMHO). God bless you, as well, Larry 🙏🇺🇸
It was early in my second tour in Vietnam that I realized the politicians who had started the war had no intention of letting us win the war and that we were all dying for nothing! And at home, we, not the politicians, were being blamed for the war. Nearly 55 years later, I still suffer from horrible nightmares and am in therapy for severe delayed chronic PTSD and depression. In spite of all this, God blessed me with a wife who understood my pain and endured much verbal abuse and isolation from me during the years that I lived in a bottle in a vain attempt to run away from the pain. Today, I have been sober for nearly 30 years and we have two wonderful children and two beautiful granddaughters. But as great as that is, the greatest thing to happen to me was a chance meeting with a man of God who introduced me to Jesus. My faith tells me to forgive my enemies and to love those who despise me. But 55 years later, I still haven't gotten there, and every day I ask my Savior for the strength and grace to forgive a country that blamed me and my brothers and sisters in arms for a war politicians started. When I do sometimes wear my Vietnam Veteran cap, people will say "thank you for your service." I nod my head and mumble thank you, but my heart's not in it. The only thing that means anything to me is when a fellow vet says, "Welcome home." In spite of all the hype in recent years about how badly Vietnam veterans were treated, recognizing each other is the only real welcome home we have left.

I turned 18 in the summer of ‘71. I’ve listened to many Vietnam War stories and yours are done the best. I have a close family member now serving and I’ve passed these on for him to listen to. We should never forget these heroes personal sacrifices. Thank you Sir for this great service in keeping an important chapter in America’s history alive.

Thank you for your interviews. My father was a Vietnam Vet (1970-71). He became the president of the MA chapter of the Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club, but died relatively young in 2005 from Agent Orange. What breaks my heart is that my father, like many veterans, was very patriotic, but could still be critical of US foreign policy. Feel free to hate the war, but not the warriors. They didn't make the policy. His motorcycle club mainly consisted of other vets like him who didn't have family & they relied on each other for support. No matter how many kids toy drives and scholarships they funded, they got a bad rap from law enforcement, probably because they were respected by other unsavory clubs like the Hells Angels. Will you please consider interviewing a Vietnam Vet who is also a member of the Vietnam Vets motorcycle club, while they're still alive? FYI: the president of the NY chapter of VIetnam Vets MC owned a business that rebuilt the cell tower that was taken out on 911. ✌❤

This is dumb i suppose, but i have a pocket watch looking clock just like theirs. It was my parents and i am 73 and it has never stopped ticking in my house for over 35 years for sure.
I have only seen one oyher one in a bar in Live Oak m, California.
I am an army vet. Spent all of 1972 at Pamunjom. Korea.

I have been listening to the accomplishments of those guys who served in the military. To me, they are real heroes dead and alive. No Trump, they weren’t nor aren’t suckers and losers. They are heroes for ever and may God bless always🙏.

The words patriotism and patriot have deevolved into a crazy meaning relative to what they meant years ago. To me, they mean being willing to support and fight for one’s country when there’s an existential threat to our democracy or our allies. I’m sure most German citizens of the 1930s through mid-1940s were patriotic, but they were not exactly able to think and act in the best interest of Germany in the face of Hitler’s dictatorship/police state and Goebbels propaganda program. I strongly believe in supporting our soldiers whom we send overseas to fight on our behalf; likewise, the tendency of our nation seems to be to stop going to school and learning once we get a job and start a family. That is, we tend to become easy prey for those who would take our freedom away from us from within our own national boundaries. The way the word patriotism is thrown around as a very virtuous word divorced from all thought about the meaning of the word, makes me very uncomfortable. It does not mean using the word patriotism to divide the American people. Anyone who listens to oral histories of our veterans of foreign wars will be amazed at the magnitude of their bravery, suffering, and sacrifices; we cannot help but demand that these men be treated with respect that they deserve. We must also tolerate those who protest peacefully and respectfully.

All because of politicisation...
and made to feel shame for a job they were drafted to do...
Yes atrocities did occur, but look how many 100,s thousand men went over, and yes, amongst that number would be the odd psycopath, sociopath that enjoyed what they got away with....
(heinous by anyones standards, and totally unhinged)
The Vets who served, all seem to state they did their JOB, with pride..and dont regret what they had to do.....
Its such a shame that it took so long to recognise the emotional damage and not to mention the generational effects of Agent Orange...!....
The Vets deserve the best of Medical Care....
Its not fair they suffer one minute longer than the time they served for their country....
emotionally, financially nor physically...

I searched for a series i had been listening to, about Vietnam Veterans and your channel popped up.
Im of the belief that these amazing boys went to war with the best of intentions but got treated abominably for doing their job...the lack of support made most of them clam up about their service...and that is so sad they had to keep their experiences under wraps.
They were shamed...but considering how deep and dark their war was (including hand to hand combat) I can see how their PTSD became such an integral part of their lives...
and again, so misunderstood...
Taking so long to be able to share what happened to them is so sad, they've kept so many horrors locked inside, its soul destroying.
I bawled like a baby after listening to Sgt Preo, you can see the effect this has had on him for years....
Its not fair he still suffers (and any other Veterans)
The Vietnam Vets have been instrumental in making sure the next generation get assistance post Afghanistan and Iraq, different types of war, yet with the same elements of fear they expience during their tour (where does the next bullet, IED, bomb come from)
I guess from my own perspective, and 24 years service as an emergency care nurse, i feel for the injuries they suffered, physical and emotional.
I know how hard the recovery can be.
I was badly injured and broke my neck, so i have a lot of downtime to listen to their stories...
so im empathetic to their suffering...
I wish them all "inner peace". Xxxx
