    Mike was way before his time to talk about this publicly - only 9 years - but so much awareness has happened since then. Thank you Mr. Wallace. RIP.

    There is nothing to be ashamed of if you suffer from depression, but it sure makes one feel that way.

      Some of the comments here are years old. And so I found yours, which is from a week ago...I just wanted to say hi I'm suffering from it too, combined with a midlife crisis I've thought very dark thoughts, about ending it all. And yes the NHS is woefully underfunded in the area of mental health illness.

      @@mazklassa9338 hi I've just seen your message. Honestly it really is the pits, isn't it? What helped me recently is reading Douglas Bloch's books and watching his videos. I hope you feel better soon ✊

    It's good that distinguished people talk about these things to lessen the stigma related with them. Depression is often complex;..the human mind is complex.
    Abraham Lincoln was said to have suffered from it and he wasn't regarded as someone weak.

  • @metsot

    And a real state of depression is far far beyond just a bad or sad mood; it can be a very serious even life threatening condition from which you most certainly can not "snap out" of at will.

      I was so bad at one time that I couldn’t get out of bed for 6 months , lost my appetite and lost almost 40 pounds. I was looking like death. Finally I was put on some medication that helped me get my mood and appetite back. I still struggle but I’m at least functioning.

    Depression is still very very tabou even in 2013 . Unless you had one yourself or know somebody really close to you that had one, you can`t know what it is. When they say it`s the worst fthing you can feel well , it is pretty right. I had a major depression for three years and it`s like you are living on another planet. Your mind s not there anymore. That was four years ago and i can say that i don`t think i`m never gonna be the same again. Courage to all of you who suffer from it...

    • @metsot
      @metsot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why is it still "taboo" ..a mood disorder
      ..doesn't exactly make you a criminal though:)

    • @metsot
      @metsot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you say it's like "living on a different planet, you're not the're anymore.." it's very apt ..and I've had a 25 year stretch of it.

    I have suffered from very bad depression for almost all of my 36 years but if I had the option to trade it in for cancer I think I might be reluctant. That quote in the first 2 minutes might be a bit of hyperbole. If I get the chance to negotiate what kind of cancer and my prognosis I might be more willing to discuss a trade however.

    • @SilverScreenJean
      @SilverScreenJean 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Steven Perez If you get certain cancers you might have a chance of survival and going on with your life or you may- die. A person with MDD already wants to die and can't seem to get better.

    • @lexi6081

      Then you have never had bad depression. A severely depressed person can't construct any kind of future for themselves, they just want to cease to exist. Cancer is nothing compared to this, you might be alive with depression but internally you are worse off than dead.

    Find a good psychiatrist, easy for a privileged American to say,
    Yes, they have to pay, but here in Britain with the N.H.S. there is a distinct lack of quality care for mental health. Depression doesn't differentiate between rich and poor.

  • @montesa9136
    @montesa9136 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Had MDD all my life. Done all the drugs & therapy, but there is no cure, it just gets worse. Only answer is suicide…..tried killing myself 3 times, & I'm not giving up until I achieve it. Sounds morbid, I know, but I wouldn't want my sick dog to suffer like this…

    • @lexi6081
      @lexi6081 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you have tried ketamine, deep brain stimulation, hormone therapy, ECT etc you can't say there's no cure. I do understand your desire to end it though, it's excruciating.

      +Alex B:
      At some point people simply decide they have had enough. There is no law saying they have to exhaust every possible modality of treatment. People know in their gut whether or not they have a future ....

    • @lexi6081
      @lexi6081 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Moore the whole point of depression is you can't trust your gut feeling. Your gut feeling is a lie, an altered brain state as powerful as any drug. Robbing yourself of living because you didn't find a cure isn't illegal, but it's very sad.

    • @lexi6081
      @lexi6081 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trust me, I've fought suicidal thoughts for a while now. When I'm in it, it makes too much logical sense, you can't deny it nor trust your gut feeling because your gut feeling says 'everything is hopeless, life is pointless, I hate this life and the only escape is suicide'. Surviving this feeling taught me just how powerful depression is.

    • @montesa9136
      @montesa9136 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree! I've been in a positive head space also, & when I'm in that space life has some meaning & suicide never enters my mind. I am 100% aware that is depression that causes me to feel & think the way I do. The catch is this:
      When most of your life is over, & the bad times have drastically out weighed the good, & there is nothing in the future that offers any hope, people are faced with deciding when enough is enough....
      For it is hope that keeps us going....
