    Love your videos! As a 50+ year real life pilot as well as 36+ year flight sim pilot and owner of every version of MSFS along the way, I am very excited about this new version. I am actually having a new computer built just for this new sim. It's my retirement present to myself! A couple of comments... #1) FS will never be as real on every level as real life flying, so get over it. Vatsim is an incredible enhancement to the system. Other enhancements and addons, as in the past will keep coming and make it better and better. I have my other two sims (FS9 and FSX) on different computers and their own set ups and I have no intention of getting rid of either as I have over 20,000. hours invested and many hundreds of planes and helicopters that cannot be re-duplicated in FS20. On my other sims I run multiple (5) monitors on each system. On FS20, I am only going with a 49" curved monitor as well as one other small monitor for the various windows such as ATC and any other window(s) that I want open. Comment #2) This is for all pilots, both real and sim... ALWAYS complete a Pre-takeoff briefing on every flight that includes what you, as PIC, will do in the event of emergencies both on the ground with runway remaining and once in the air. Also... state at what minimum altitude and maximum distance from the departing airport a successful 180 degree turn to return to the airport can be made... and state out loud that once outside this envelope, a straight ahead landing will be made. (just know that some lower powered planes, there is no safe return envelope). In 50 years of real life flying, I have had three complete engine failures and pre-planning was the key to survival in all three. Always have the departure airport as your 1st waypoint in any flight plan so you will have distance from the airport during the takeoff. If possible, have the runway centerline extended by either loading an arrival approach or if able tune the OBS to extend the centerline. Keep up the great work.

    Questions I had when watching this:
    1. How do you know what to set the barometric pressure to?
    2. How to taxi would be a good video. I didn't understand the taxi instructions from the tower.
    3. What did you set up on your displays at the beginning of the flight?
    4. What's the difference between social and palm springs tower communications?
    5. Explanation on the landing coms for upwind leg, crosswind leg, base leg etc.
    No need to answer all these questions just things I was confused about when watching.
    Love the content. Keep it up!

    • @RazvanMaioru
      @RazvanMaioru 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can only answer 2 of these: barometric pressure is part of the ATIS (What you'll hear is: US: Altimeter xxxx in inHg, e.g. Altimeter 2992 (they don't say the decimal); World: QNH xxxx in mb/hPa, e.g. QNH 1013)
      And taxi instructions are: [destination] via [name of first taxiway you need to use], [name of second taxiway], etc. "Cross runway x" means you have clearance to taxi across that runway when you get to it, and it's said in order. So the video's instructions were: your destination is the hold short point on RW 31L, to get there you'll use taxiway E, then taxiway D, then you have clearance to cross RW 31R, after which you'll be on taxiway D, then go on C, then A, and you'll arrive. It's a lot to remember, so if you're smart you'd have a pen nearby to write it down, and to know which taxiway is called what you'll have to look at the airport's charts (there are also signs on the airport ground but they only tell you the right taxiway not the right direction). If you still didn't get it just let me know what, and I'll try explain better.

      He set up his navigation stuff while listening to atc just to save time later. . Upwind, leg, downwind etc... Are locations in the pattern at the airport. Every airport has a pattern direction and you notify which locations in the pattern you are.

      @@samyosef it's got some quirks for sure. The callsign read backs are pretty wonky, but hopefully easy to fix. (Would be nice if the civil guys were read correctly. Can't remember the number, but there was a southwest flight that the computer read as SWA instead of southwest, and the numbers should be group form.) I noticed the taxi instructions were slightly strange as well; ATC told the pilot to hold short of a runway then immediately gave them runway crossing clearance. Granted, I'm at the academy where things are done differently from out in the field, so I'm not an expert quite yet.

    So cool to see this flight. So I just flew this exact route myself (Palm Springs -> Big Bear) 2 days ago in real life and the whole time I was thinking "How would this look in FS2020?". Thanks for answering this! Since I just recently flew this, here are my thoughts and comparisons (along with my thoughts on the ATC):
    The Good:
    - Normally entering LA airspace before you head into the mountains would be so busy you have a hard time getting anything in. However because of COVID there was a decent amount of dead space on the radios IRL, and I liked how that was reflected in the sim. I'd like to see what it's like if/when things return to normal
    - Both airports looks really good for being auto-gen. Sure you don't get the details like the cool log-cabin style restaurant next to the control tower, but it's way more accurate than other flight sims. Runway width/length and bumpiness looked pretty spot-on
    - Nice job with the landing. I pretty much did the exact same thing as you - came in too high first time so looped around the pattern, and overshot/was too high on my loop-around. I was in a Diamond Star DA40 though which doesn't have nearly as much drag so I ended doing another go-around. But I like how accurate the physics were in the sim. FSX and X Plane I could have easily put the plane down on that first approach
    - Correct runways were selected for takeoff at Palm Springs, and correct landing runway for Big Bear
    - Scenery as always looks amazing
    Things that Could Improve:
    - Biggest gripe so far on ATC in FS2020 is that it sounds like it was taken directly from FSX and added a "mic" filter to it. ie, the voices don't sound realistic, it still takes a while to generate the speech after you select the option. With TTS tech we have today (especially with Azure), I would have thought this would be much much better
    - The phraseology is still too simplistic and just wrong a lot of the time:
    + Nobody says "Contact Tower on one-two-five decimal eight". It's just "one-two-five point eight", or even just "point eight" for switching between airport frequencies. I've never heard any ATC out in SoCal say "decimal"
    + Was super weird that they handed you off to SoCal Approach after takeoff only to immediately hand you off again
    + Sometimes they were way too specific on your instructions, something that wouldn't happen especially near LA
    - I'm guessing TFRs aren't implemented. In real life there is a TFR up to 13,500ft on the direct route you took due to the fire out here
    For the default sim this is incredible. Graphics are amazing and physics and sounds are gorgeous. Great sporty landing too! But I think the ATC has a lot to be improved on in my opinion.
    And FYI in US (at least SoCal) we pretty much always announce entering pattern, downwind, and final (and go-around). We'll announce other positions if there are other aircraft nearby

    As a former air traffic controller, the default ATC isn't terrible, but it needs some work based on what I've witnessed here and other videos. Most of the phraseology is correct, and most of the instructions are clear and make sense, but there are moments here and there that absolutely triggers my OCD. For example, the controller states the runway following "cleared for takeoff." This is minor, but the 7110.65 states the proper phraseology as "runway (number), cleared for takeoff." This is spoken in this order for a reason.
    Another, larger issue I have.... It seems that in other videos, the tower controller is far too quick in instructing an aircraft that has just landed to contact ground. This should only be done when the controller is able to anticipate the aircraft being clear of the runway, or the aircraft is already clear. Sending an aircraft to ground while it is still completing its rollout on an active runway is dangerous.
    Furthermore, there are moments where the AI ATC isn't as fluid or as smart as it should be. For example, a plane taking off and the controller says "I will contact you next when you're leaving my airspace" ....only to follow up literally 2 seconds later with "contact departure..." This is unnecessary verbage that clutters up the frequencies, especially in busier terminal environments. If an aircraft is already on the verge of leaving the AI ATC's airspace, it should either hand the aircraft off a mile off the departure end, or simply wait until it's the appropriate time to call up the aircraft again. This is one reason why"after departure..." instructions in IFR clearances are important.
    Also, it will be interesting to find out if the controllers at military bases specify the wind in takeoff clearances, and "check wheels down" in landing clearances.

    • @TheGunterGlieben
      @TheGunterGlieben 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree with the above, also... the pilot does not call ground for jetway, catering, fuel, gpu etc. These requests from an airline crew would normally go through company ops. And as mentioned above the excessive verbiage is painful... stop saying “please” with every request. “Please sir, may I have some fuel, please sir may I have catering”... Pilot/ATC also do not include aircraft type in every transmission. The ATC has tremendous potential but they need to get some ATC subject experts involved. Hopefully this is still WIP.

      But yeah, it has SO MUCH POTENTIAL... And the majority of the work has been done, it just needs a bit of polish and shine! I'm excited to see the final product, and I'm even more excited to see what the future holds for ATC in FS2020, both in what the developers and what the modders bring to the table.

There are few instances here and there, where it exactly matches real world comms and procedures. But then there are huge segments that have no basis in reality whatsoever. Looks like they were able to obtain some communications that were accurate, and then whatever was missing they just used their best guess. For example, the exchange between the pilot and controller, when requesting _VFR flight following_ is pretty accurate, but elsewhere it is completely off the charts wrong (For example, ATC would not vector you in certain ways, or do certain other things, like they do in this sim)!

      @MrMleewilson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that will be possible when we get the SDK and can build our own AI Traffic. I've seen videos where people type in their own callsigns for their flights and the sim reads it back ok. This is great because in FS, the sim wouldn't read back your callsign unless it was in the Callsigns list and the sounds file. You had to use EditVoicePack to add callsigns to the sim if the callsign wasn't already in. Looks like you don't have to do that anymore for your own flight, and I hope you don't have to do that for your AI traffic anymore. We'll see when the SDK comes out and we learn how to build AI and AI Traffic.

    • @jetBlue_83
      @jetBlue_83 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way it could work is for the sim to use Ai to read the actual callsign. I remember in older versions of FS you could add a list of callsigns to the sim and it would read them as you added them.

    • @MrMleewilson
      @MrMleewilson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jetBlue_83 Yep, but the callsign also had to be in the sounds file, which is a binary file (I think it was sounds.dll). You had to edit it with a tool called EditVoicePack by adding a voicepack file that actually had the sounds associated with the callsign. Then you had to recompile the sounds file, which would take a while. After that, you could use the callsign in your own flights and/or associate it with AI planes.

    I've been hoping for some major improvements to the ATC in FSX but this looks like basically the same thing, even carrying over all the unrealistic stuff like "continue as planned". ATC is always going to give you a way to get on course after takeoff, whether it's a departure procedure or just a vector. They also *did* seem to basically vector you into a mountain, giving you an altitude of 8,800 feet in an area where there are 9,950 foot mountains. I did see you go up to 10,000 on your own. They then cleared you for a visual approach, which is all FSX ever did, so I was disappointed to see it here. (btw, stay on with ATC on an IFR visual approach; use that second radio!) I see that you can still manually ask for other approaches, but that probably means that any AI traffic is going to be using the visual approach, not whatever would more likely be in use at the time. So if you do fly a more realistic approach, you're potentially going to be conflicting with all the other traffic coming in. (Visual approaches aren't uncommon, but they're the only thing FSX ever assigned so I feel like that's probably just carried over along with everything else.)
    I feel like this system is still in need of a major revamp. I'm probably going to give VATSIM a go again until then, although VATSIM certainly has its problems too. I really would like realistic default ATC and I feel like it's close enough that it shouldn't really be all that hard to fix it. But as it is, its problems are bad enough that it makes it impossible to fly in a realistic way. It is better than X-Plane's and FSX's always was too, but it doesn't seem like they've done much of anything to improve it in FS2020.

Plane looses altitude fast with out gaining airspeed. X-plane11 handles this perfectly, so its good to practice in the sim, curious how it works in MFS2020. Side note, Big Bear has some pretty hard core departure and approch procedues for noise abatement.

    Quite a few errors in verbiage and procedures that show ATC was not a high priority in the design. Its a game I know but they could have done a bit more research. Maybe these can be fixed in the future.
    1. When saying altitudes the word "feet" is not normally used
    2. When saying a frequency the word "decimal" should be "point".
    3. When told to taxi to a runway ATC does not tell you to "hold short" of that same runway, that is already assumed.
    4. On initial call to departure control their response would not be "continue as planned", it would be "radar contact maintain 12,000".
    5. When reading the altimeter setting it should not include the word "decimal".
    6. Once airborne for some reason a second IFR clearance was given, that would never happen.
    7. Told to decend to 8,800 but mountains were in the way. IFR can't be very realistic if ATC has no idea if your going to hit a mountain.
    8. ATC never cleared the aircraft for an approach, maybe because the frequency was changed without ATC authorization. But being that close to the arrival airport a clearance would have already been received.

    What's confusing to me actually, is the voices of the ATC and Pilot sound the same, so it's hard, even though you can read it on the screen, to hear the differentiation while looking at flying screens like speed, altitude and head, and making adjustments. The voices are so similar I find myself having to look at what is spoken to figure out who said it, in lieu of hearing the different voice and recognizing and making adjustments.
    I know you can read the ATC, but hearing the different voice is better in my opinion, then reading to backup what is said.

    I don’t like that ground crew member lurking around ...why is he parked, so annoying! That guy should be fixed in the next update

    Many thanks for starting to use the keyboard shortcuts. Could you describe what key command does what while you're doing the videos for we who need to see with our ears, so we can't see what you're doing.
    Please could you add just a slight more audio description about what your doing when you do it?
    Many thanks and please keep up the great work you do when you do the videos.

    No more wacky vectors in the terminal area,and no nagging on altitude changes,that's a start. I wonder how the ATC SDK will be for 3rd party developers?

    Thanks for putting out all this awesome content for the new sim, super excited to play it and I’ve already got a copy preordered. One question though: the FPS when you were on the ground before the flight started/ taxiing was kind of unsettling. Are you playing on ultra? What’s your experience with overall performance in the sim? Thanks

    It's a shame they are not using more variation with the voices. I'm pretty sure the AzureAI is running the text to speech as well. Surely they can spend some time playing with it. Some natual pauses, etc.

    You were coming in high and fast. I’d recommend pulling power to idle in that situation and let the plane sink. You had it at 1300 rpm until you transitioned to land

    I noticed the yoke didnt move as you changed the pitch attitude during landing.

    Unrelated question: What is the consensus on where to purchase MSFS? Is it better to purchase direct from Microsoft or is purchasing on Steam fine? I guess my question relates to ease of access, download speeds, timeliness / access to updates and 3rd party content etc. Which option is recommended by the community? Thanks.

    For a default airport, that looks pretty good. I was comparing it with the real one by looking at Google Maps, and everything looks like it's in the right spot. I'm not sure about those roads in Big Bear, though. They were a bit... green. The ATC needs work. It'll get you through the day, but this was one area I really, really hoped would be seriously improved since FSX. Also, does anyone think that voice sounds familiar? I think it might've been used for one of the chatter voices in an old X-Plane version or something else. Sure sounds familiar.

    I'd like to know what the differences between standard airports and hand crafted are (standard Heathrow vs Premium Heathrow)

    seemed odd that you would use small airport for this example I would think you would demonstrate the ATC at a busy controlled airfield so we could see how the ATC handles traffic on the airport and landing and departing from the airport ??

    Very nice video Aus. This is my neck of the woods. So the only thing i didn't like about what i saw in this new sim so far is when listing to ATIS, it goes way to fast and would sound more realistic if it slowed down like Steam Addition. And the other thing i would like to see changed is instead of say decimal point, is to get rid of the word decimal and just say point. This is how we say it in SoCal or the US for that matter. I do know in Europe decimal is commonly used in there language. Other than that, i liked what i saw. Oh and AUS, i was wondering why you had the ATC and MAP windows open off the sides of the screen? I always align them off to the upper left of the screen so you don't block your full vision. That's just me. :-)

    But what about the AI traffic? Hopefully we get accurate AI models and liveries

      You can choose between realistic ai models and generic models if you want better fps. I'm not too sure about liveries though
