Groupings by geography, time and interrelationships help too. Different color 3 x 5 cards might also help to organize this huge amount of material. Culture is a huge topic! Google study tips also helps me to find ways to approach "frisky" ("frisky" because of its massive quantity) material.

I am a college student in Houston Texas going for a business degree but am becoming more and more fascinated with European History as I explore the different periods and found one of your videos while trying to explore the period of German Unification during the 19th Century. Fortunately I found one of yours. There is just so much to learn and it is impossible to get it all without picking up a book every once in a while, but I am finding informational videos increasingly convenient and useful to watch or listen to, especially yours.
Glad I can help you learn! I value people like you who watch my lectures for their own edification. One doesn't have to be a historian in order to benefit from being educated!

Second times the charm on the AP exam. I can't thank you enough for having these videos. I had an nervous breakdown and failed. My to many people gave up halfway through the class and so by the end of the year they ended the class. My only things to study with are the book and your videos. If it weren't for these videos I would have the hope to try again. Thank you 😊

Dude, I didn't know that Petrarch coined the term "Dark Ages". Thanks for that story about him climbing the mountain too. Good information! Somehow I'd never heard any of that in my undergraduate history studies.

Thanks for subscribing, Ajey! The High Renaissance is the Renaissance at its peak - sort of the middle, same way the "High Middle Ages" is distinct from the Early and Late Middle Ages. The High Renaissance lasted from the 1490s-1520s, and would include the works of artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael. Donatello was an artist of the early Renaissance. I've got another video on Renaissance Art - it's a slidecast that goes into all that.

The Northern Renaissance is a matter of geography, as distinct from the Italian Renaissance. This describes the Renaissance in places like England, the Netherlands, and the German states. Erasmus and Thomas More and their works (Praise of Folly, Utopia) are most likely to show up on the exam. I'm planning to film an e-lecture on the Northern Renaissance. When is your test? Maybe I'll see if I can get it posted before then!
At my university, Kings College London, we study early modern europe beginning in 1500 so I cant use much of these examples but thank you all the same.
actually the Renaissance -artist; architect; writer - Georgio Vasari- used the italian word "rinascita" meaning "rebirth" to describe the era which he lived.

thank you Tom for the video though there is one thing tickling my mind that we all know that Thomas Aquinas already translated Greek philosophy works from Arabic. He calls Aristotle "The Philosopher" and Averrroes (Ibn Ruşd) as the "commentator" Europe already knew about Ancient Greek works in 13th century. Than your comment on Turks' closing down the Greek universities and Greek philosopher's fleeing to Italy is not quite accurate. This could be the claim of some that do not want to give the credit of European enlightenment to the Andalusian Arabs.
Yes, Aquinas and others read Aristotle during the Middle Ages, which had been translated into Latin, but Plato was not translated into Latin until the early Renaissance. Pico della Mirandola in his Oration on the Dignity of Man makes a reference to a notable Saracen scholar, which adds some credibility to the points you make. Perhaps, the Turks closed some universities and not others? One of these days, I would like to take a deeper look into the Islamic Golden Age.

Not really. I've been teaching Western Civ/AP Euro in some capacity since 2007 and have used so many textbooks that I just tend to teach content, now, rather than depending on a textbook. In class, I assign my students readings from the Kagan text and Ethel Wood's coursebook, but my lectures focus on exam content without regard to what's in a particular textbook.
