As a Chandigarhian, this video hits hard while giving a vibe of nostalgia. Chandigarh was and is famous for being different to the other metros while providing the same amenities. If we allow sky scrapers and flyovers to be built out here, it will be akin to destroying the soul of this city. Huge respect to all the activists involved in stopping such activities.

@@rahulj.005 clearly you don't understand the meaning of the word "soul". Please look it up in the dictionary, before spouting venom about other cities. Chandigarhites/Punjabis cannot take any criticism whatsoever & when that's accompanied by a delusional stubborn mindset & mindless worship of Mammon, it's game over really for their own individual souls & their collective soul as a community; sadly, its reflected in their self-proclaimed "City Beautiful".

Clearly you don't understand the mindset of the average Chandigarhite resident, which this documentary didn't cover. They will buy cars for their hamsters if they can. And as for the likes of Sareen & Bali, they are stuck in their ivory towers and what they don't want is a crash in the house prices, which is abnormally high & kept so. I would like Ms. Bali to take Chandigarh /Haryana /Mohali public transport via Tribune Chowk on a daily basis for work, and see if she changes her mind about the flyover. Chandigarh is not the personal "jaagir" of Le Corbusier (and he got a lot of things wrong too - since he never factored in the population increase & the inflexibility of his Master plan is what will kill the city ultimately) or of old time, ultra - rich Chandigarh elites like Max Sareen.

The justice system in India isn't that great either - it's gamed as hell & the SC itself is an undemocratic institution because of its collegium system of appointment for the judges.
A better solution would be if every house in Chandigarh is legally allowed to have only 2 vehicles & all school kids have to take school buses or cycle or walk to school. Let's see how many Chandigarh environmental activists support that.

    Great video 🙏
Chandigarh is my childhood home town. My observations-
    (1) Any solution to combat increased pollution and climate impacts without fixing the underlying issue of over population would be bandaging without treating the wound.
    (2) Chandigarh is one of those cities that can easily be made walkable or manual bike or manual rickshaw commute intensive. Public transportation can be made more effective. However, we are going in opposite direction besides increased cars and other fossil/EV dependent commute; we also replaced manual rickshaw with smoke emitter or EV autos that create emissions or toxic battery waste.
    (3) Constructed Home density obviously increased due to population but also noticed that even the rich people who constructed new home made massive structures leaving very little space for front yard, side yard and backyards. Since most homes use cement, marble and bricks- heat radiating effect increases. This can easily be handled by provide regulations inline with green building and green cover requirements.
    (4) Outdoor side small green patches of land next to every house are now all replaced by concrete- again adding to heat radiated during summers.
    (5) Agree poor business practices aka capitalist mindset that focuses on short term gains over sustainable practices is one of the major reason after over-population issue. Have walked the high end and the low end markets and even with the explosion in population seems difficult to comprehend how ever all that stuff would find buyers? Would not be surprised if a major chunk ends in landfills - an issue even with rich countries. Degrowth is necessary (details available - can google or on TH-cam)
    (6) Bring to forefront the climate activists and subject matter experts like certified permaculture designers to provide solutions.
    (7) Creating communities where people living in Chandigarh participate in solution, clean up efforts is essential. If there is such communities- would help if more and more people are made aware of it.
    (8) Kudos to Pavila Bali. Anandita Mitra ji stated that sum total on green cover is being maintained (if not improved I guess). But knowing due to increased population density, more and more construction on land is being done - how is her statement feasible. Guessing it is reforestation at relatively far off places/outskirts - that is definitely a great initiative and much needed; however I do not understand how does that help stop eco-degradation of the city? More construction in the city means city loosing more green cover. This further pushes people indoors, increase dependence on energy for cooling and for commute.
    (9) I personally can say with 💯 certainty that the city, called “the city beautiful” is degrading fast. I have memories of the city from 1980s onwards and can compare. Calling it one of the best smart cities only makes sense because most of the other cities and human dwellings are degrading as well. But otherwise it’s a false victory statement if you know city does not even live up to its own previous glory of being a beautiful planned green city.
    (10) Agree that ebike is not right because of the battery waste handling challenges. Agree manual cycling is good for public health- mental and physical both. Agree vandalism is an issue but only cameras won’t do it. Having efficient police force at work is necessary- Kiran Bedi’s work strategies can be looked at because she is one of the most effective and honest personality known who has a record of controlling crime in every area of operation assigned to her. Her input /insight on increased gang fights in jail in recent times even with high tech surveillance is testimony to the fact that tools alone cannot go far unless backed by human efficiency.
    (11) It would help to know how can we connect with the activists. I will google but any email of the social activists group would be a nice to have.

Inspiration should be taken from European cities rather than the American ones. A good tram network like in European cities can work wonders in connecting the sectors, thus, reducing various short trips made using cars.

Gardens/Parks/grounds become commercially unviable even when supplemented with annual fees, renting, ads and commercial activities.

Chandigarh was made in 1960 after destroying villages of Punjab (Puadh Area) (Most won't even know what Puadh area is). The city was made entirely out of tax money of people of Punjab and Haryana and no compensation was given to the people who became homeless and landless. The city was named after some temple named nearby of a Hindu goddess named chandi. Many local sources say a gurdwara named "Paua Sahib" was destroyed and a mandir was made there after 1947. Slowly, it was grabbed by Centre and made Union Territory by Indira gandhi.

If you would have heard Puadhi, than you would know it is a creole language of Haryanvi and Punjabi. Many of the Puadhis identify as Haryanvi and many as Punjabi. Also, majority of the villages were that of Puadhi Jatts, who converted to Sikhism only in the late 1800s and early 1900s; as per the 1901 census , the majority of Jatts of this area, which was part of Kharar tehsil were Hindu, but by 1931 they became Sikh majority and started identifying as Punjabis. The main gotra of this area was Baidwan, and Hindu Baidwans in neighbouring villages in Panchkula and Ambala call themselves Haryanvi while Sikh Baidwan call themselves Punjabi. This is the reason Chandigarh should belong to both states because its people were always in between.

Unless the vehicular traffic is not regulated in Chandigarh, the city will die in due course of time. Corbusiers master plan was flawed to start with. How did he not factor in the population growth? Corbusiers master plan is not the holy scripture that it cannot be altered. Other cities in Latin America which Corbusier designed changed infrastructure according to need. If a flyover can decongest a part of the city it should be welcomed. All the elite shown in this video have no idea about the discomfort commuters face. Trees are not the end all of a city there are other facets. Chandigarhs green cover has increased in past 10 years so what's this obsession with trees?

Arguments against development are going to fail when whole country is going forward. Democracy means you cannot view our fellow citizens from satellite towns or anywhere in India as "outsiders".
At this juncture it's important to ask how mass rapid transport system for the city got delayed and who are to blame for that. Great number of people commute to Chandigarh daily. Inflow of traffic is only going to increase. Conventional fixes to the traffic problem will lead to felling of trees. Mass rapid transport system, had it not been thwarted 6 years ago, could've presented an alternative.

Agree with you totally. Ultra rich elites of Chandigarh think that it's their personal "jaagir" and no one points out the glaring mistakes that Corbusier made. What needs to happen really is flyovers & rapid transport metro systems need to be built asap or shift the capital of Punjab to Mohali & the capital of Haryana to Panchkula - both will be fought tooth & nail, so I am not holding my breath. Given that Chandigarh is a base for the army & the airforce, it's a sitting duck in case the balloon goes up. No bunkers anywhere, just big kothis full of junk & junkies!

17:20 I thought Corbusier was architect, but no seems like he is Prophet of any symmetric religion where you cant change word of prophet if its written on paper 😄
Whats wrong if we change in his original planning.. Does your Corbusier know in 20th century what will happen in 21st century? No, right!
People habbits change, purchasing power change, working style change, does corbusier know there will be co-working places kind of thing emerge in 21th centuries, so we can't build it?
So how and why people in 21th centuries act like he know everything back then and made plan for eternity 😄..
Why indian not understand Cities are constant changing process, and emerge as new things come out.. Old get destroyed, old policy get dump.. And new policies, new buildings once come out.. Go and do google - New York, London, tokyo, Singapore, mumbai then vs now" and then you understand what I'm talking about.. This all cities are not build in one go,(like people of Chandigarh think it was build in one go) todays New York is 300years process. Todays Singapore is 60years process. Todays Mumbai is 150 years process..
But Chandigarh want to stuck with time, as it was planned in 1960. And this why todays Chandigarh can't become metro city like pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, gurugram.. There no job opportunities for youngsters present in Chandigarh, Chandigarh keep gates shut for poor rural migrants, no multiculturalism present there because of Chandigarh "Gated community" approch planning.. And so many more flaws..
Chandigarh is one of the worst planning city, period.. Its so worst planned, that it not even count in categories of "City". But it just "Extended residential area" and thats it..

If that lady had to travel everyday via tribune chowk she would be cutting those trees herself.

Why don't you focus on the issue? Vehicles that are merely transiting the city.

@@thewhatorwhy The point of a city is urbanisation and pulling people out of poverty. A car is far more safe than public transport and 2-wheelers. I am all in for people willing to walk to work and what not. But in actuality, people want all the amenities of a city without accepting what it takes to make it run like a city.
Small towns exist go there if u want a slow life. The point of a city is something diff all together.

I don't believe there is absolutely NOTHING that can be done to manage traffic WHILE preserving the trees.
