  • Only accessible by boat, we travelled 370 kilometres from Broome, Western Australia to visit this infamous reef holes. We had to time our travel to Montgomery Reef carefully as the tides play a very important role. This place in the Kimberley region of Western Australia has one of the biggest tides on earth. The reef gets engulfed with ten metres of seawater and at low tide, it appears as if the reef rises out of sea.
    David Attenborough voted this as one of most spectacular natural wonders of the world for its diverse and pristine marine life, this place is simply INCREDIBLE!!!! The marine life is so easy to appreciate with the corals and sea life surrounding us left, right and centre. The pool that we snorkel in would not have ever had a human being swim in it.
    We time the tide so we arrive on the dropping tide. We make sure we still have at least, a couple of hours to get to the nearest small pool to snorkel in. This allows us to access these beautiful blue reef holes and witness all the amazing fish life for a small period of time before the tide comes rushing back in. We are always very aware that salt water crocodiles inhabit this area, so we always use our drone to survey the blue holes before we dive in. We arrive knee-deep in water and by the time we started snorkelling, the water had gone down ankle-deep. Margie records her reef walk with some amazing discovery including finding a purple star fish. She gets to play with a clam fish with water and walk next to a conch shell that looks like it's a extra-terrestrial being!
    The variety of corals and fish was mind-boggling. There were so many fish to see including hundreds of fusilier fish, coral trout, spanish flag, angel fish, rock cod, mangrove jack, damsel fish, blue bone (black spot tusk fish) to name a few. A very big rock cod was watching Ricky and it looked like curiosity was getting the better of him. Ricky was able to catch a green turtle asleep underneath a big bommie. He also got to follow tawny nurse sharks in both the smaller and bigger blue holes and where the water was rushing out the reef. When we finished snorkelling two blue holes, we were waist-deep in water.
    We had to travel at least an hour out to go camping at a beach where Ricky cooks our catch from the previous day: Golden Snapper and Saddle tail Snapper. We wrap our potatoes in foil and cook it in the hot coals. On a bed of fresh spinach, we have fried fish for dinner, potato with butter, mayonnaise and sprinkles of fried garlic....yummmmm! We end our night with a beautiful and mesmerising campfire.

    That reef and that Tawny shark were amazing. And I literally blurted out, "Wow!" seeing the drone shot of that heart-shaped blue hole. Keep 'em coming!

      Thanks, Mok! We agree with you and David Attenborough! This reef was indeed amazing, the twenty nurse sharks were added to the experience. It was visually stunning indeed!

      Hey there, Kalli! Thank you so much for appreciating! The blue holes exposed at low tide are incredible for sure. Have a look at Episode 4 for another nearby blue hole for you to explore. We are glad there’s something we have already done that you can tap into ahead of your trip. No one seems to be targeting the blue holes at Montgomery Reef (or elsewhere) and yet it’s one of the most amazing things we have discovered, apart from the “waterfalls” when the tide drops, of course. Happy to share coordinates with you too as we have extensively travelled and scoured the Kimberley from Darwin all the way to Middle Lagoon. Have you and your hubby travelled the Kimberley before now? Do you mind doing us a favour and mentioning us on your channel page and video? We have learned so much from others sailing the area and giving us notes here and there, just so we can help others too targeting the same area ☺️
      We do travel on a 9m boat, significantly smaller than how you travel. We are keen to get a bigger catamaran/motor boat but we have so many concerns. We'd love to keep in touch and ask you and your hubby and pick your brains. We are on facebook too. Are you?

      How lovely that you enjoyed that!!! It’s one of our most favourite finds (Ricky’s, that is)! Hahaha. Of course I get petrified in case there are any man-eating creatures in those blue holes but thankfully, there are only beautiful creatures to admire :) and then I also think that if that is how I would leave this earth, boy, what a splendid way to do so! Thank you so much for sharing!!! This means a lot to us…to find connections like yours! How did you find our channel, Frank?

      We hope you will also enjoy our time at the Montebello Islands. I was skeptical as to how it would fare as we love the Kimberley region very much. Looking forward to what you think!

    It's watching videos like these that makes me wish I'm a good swimmer LOL! Watching the clam shell and the conch, as well as the different species of fish was awesome. I will say -- I didn't even realize there's a different looking starfish. I thought it was a cushion hahaha.

    • @Hookedonwildventures
      @Hookedonwildventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! The starfish looked different, right? I was excited to have seen this version and share it, for sure! Playing with the clam shell was super cool and the conch shell was like an extra-terrestrial creature! Mind you, I only healed myself of panic attacks whilst swimming last year…so before that….I was a mess!!! You, too can swim with me to enjoy these beautiful moments underwater, Gen!!!

    Love the stinger suit what about your face

    • @Hookedonwildventures
      @Hookedonwildventures  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually have one that covers my head and my forehead but I figured if I let my hair down, that would hopefully deter anything and anything; being octopus-like, it would be worse for any stingers 😂 but thanks for the reminder. I should also wear that all the time 😊 we hope you enjoyed the episode! We go snorkelling in bourbons in episode 4 as well!
