I went to the football in the 80s. Black players were abused so much, and I cringe at how the police turned a blind eye. And how it was seemed as normal then. This was in lower league level, but it was division one at the time as well. It has got a lot better these days, but not totally eradicated yet. Fans need to call it out when they see it now
As much as we all love football, it can be a big part of your life, I think one thing that people seem to forget is that it's just a game at the end of the day. It brings a lot of emotion of of us, the incredible highs and the horrific lows, but it's still just a game. The excuses you hear whenever there's a racist incident, like "Tension and emotions are running high," is no excuse at all. It shouldn't just be down to the players to report it, and I know there's the Kick It Out campaign, but I think fans need to step up a bit more when this happens and report it, whether it is targeted at a player who plays for the side you support, or the opposition, it doesn't matter. And the clubs and leagues need to follow through with punishments because too many people get away with it. These people need to be banned for life from all stadiums and the police need to be informed and they need to follow through too. I know the person on Twitter who targeted Rio Ferdinand was jailed for (I think) 6 months, but cases like that are too few and far between, if punishments happened more frequently, people would at least be much more hesitant in hurling names at people, it would cause them to do what a lot of people don't these days - think before they spoke.

I'm a Canadian and Liverpool fan who was fortunate enough to get tickets to a game at Anfield and have just returned home. While in the UK I continually saw the "See it, say it, sort it" campaign and am not sure why this is not used to fight racism at football games. Whenever there are incidents of racism it seems there is an inability to track down the guilty parties and talk of going thru stadium video footage (after the fact ). Whenever anyone exhibits racist and other discriminatory and/or abusive behaviour why are the other fans in the immediate vicinity not immediately pointing them and their behaviour out ( See it, say it, sort it ). Are they complicit or scared ? - I'm not sure which is worse. Keep up the good work - the three of you have incredible chemistry.

For walls at defensive free kicks, it isn’t solely the defender or the keeper who lines it up - they do it together. You put on defender directly between the ball and that near post, and then have another man outside him. It’s up to the keeper to stand on the post and tell that first man to go left or right, so he’s in line, and then the defence organises from there, starting with the guy on the outside of the wall. Keeper decides how many he wants, and then defenders will organise the wall and then tactics of the wall (jump or charge if a touch is taken etc), and how the rest of the team defends (man or zonal for crosses and rebounds etc). This is why Tony moving the ball a yard to his right, and therefore in line with the guy on the end of the wall was made into a bigger issue than it usually would be.

It’s strange to me racism I grew up in Manchester there was all races together so to me it was all normal and then you meet the older generations etc and the people who haven’t mixed and remain ignorant to it all. I feel for anyone who has received racist abuse
Great start, however being from England living in Panamá and a son who played in the league here we all exsprince hard racism on a regular bases. It hasn't changed since being here over 10 years. We just deal with it or only hang with expats.
Agree with Gary on 99% but you can not say there are no players in all the dressing rooms in world football that are not racist, sexist or homophobic, take Joey Barton that is just one.

On the racism topic - if a club is fined, where does the money go? There needs to be an independent body so that when there is an incident, FA/FIFA themselves are hit with a heavy fine. Then you'll see how quickly they start to really pay attention to it.
As a wednesday fan I know my fan base and we are all appalled by that ‘fan’ There’s no place for that or that person Liam palmer and Darren Moore gave me the best football experience that I’ll Probably ever experience We don’t want this in our game

racism needs to be more important than FFP start docking points and hit fans where it really hurts, if they are not true fans the proper fans in the crowd will point them out
Despite the pundits constantly commenting on “performances” of individual players every LFC fan knows our biggest strength is TEAM PERFORMANCE, zero individual player egos or accolades…Klopp is a genius
Totally agree with more impactful sanctions such as point deduction, closed stadiums and banning of fans. Following this, these clubs should be heavily fined and made part of a program to implement and monitor if corrvective meausres are put in place. If no improvements ban the teams from local and international competitions, no transfers, we need to go "heavy" to minimize or hopefully irradicate this plague called racism. Btw - Work on your Portuguese 😂 its "Jota Goal"! Keep up the good work lads!
I remember Marvin Sordell accusing Millwall of being racist, he ran around to the papers saying it’s unfair, when questioned by the FA he explained that he was called fish face. Turns out it was a 9 year old boy, referencing his face and big eyes. 1 or 3 people in a country does not make a country or fan base racist. 95% of the online abuse is from Eastern Europe.
Rugby is game for barbarians, played by gentlemen I think this has something to do with the social demographics that gravitate to the different sports, especially when it comes to watching them live. Cricket, golf, tennis are all what I would call ‘middle class sports’, you tend to get more well educated people in the crowds. This is somewhat true of rugby as well. Of course that’s a massive generalisation but that’s my take on it.
Alemería pronunciation is wrong too, Gary. The emphasis is in the "i" and not the "e". That's why it has an accent mark on top of it so we don't pronounce it like "AlmEria".
I blame the other fans who let that shit happen and just sit and watch If they got sorted out by their own fans I'm sure it wouldn't last long But then again ... uneducated people will be uneducated people
Madrid’s first goal was from a penalty which probably was right but it was like the red couldn’t wait to get Madrid back into the game. Almería had a third goal disallowed for a fouls in the build-up which was an absolute nonsense. As for the winner, it was a handball, but he didn’t punch it in, it was off his shoulder. That said, i still don’t think it should’ve been allowed, as it was more his upper arm than shoulder. If you imagine that everyone’s arms/shoulders are at a right angle (obviously not true), that makes your shoulder horizontal, and your arm is therefore vertical, the ball hit on the vertical. That was just for descriptive purposes, hi arm was actually forward a bit which caused the ball to go upwards and loop into the top corner. The ref was only shown one angle of the incident though, which, as it turns out, is the one that makes it look 100% like it’s come off his shoulder. Real get it in their favour. There’s a few Premier League clubs who have their replays shown to the ref in a way that the ref. Is going to go against them.
16:00 you can tell Alan + Micah really dislike Liverpool, but because Liverpool are so massive they can’t really say it 😂think it’s the first time this season you have spoke of Liverpool in any depth
I love you dear brother Gary! Much love and respect! Don’t pay no mind to the online hate you receive online! You’ve got an incredible heart and morals! & I would love to invite you to open the Holy Quran one day.
I think when it comes to something as serious as racism, ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. So I absolutely agree that the only way to teach these narrow minded fools is for the match to be forfeited. If the game is abandoned then sure, all fans shouldn’t be punished. They should perhaps be refunded, but the team with the racist fans should surrender 3 points to the opposing team. All the players need to support the victim of the abuse and walk off and stay off! It’s not necessarily fair to punish the lads on the field for an idiot fan, but strong actions really are the only way to stop it. Make the fans responsible. Make that particular fan or group of fans responsible. Maybe they’ll realise and actually feel guilt that they’ve ruined everyone else’s day out. As Micah said, we need REAL punishments because it’s 2024 now ffs.
Instead of the players leave, clear the section of fans or the stand or the stadium. If the fans suffer they will target the racists who are ruining their matchday. And the media can help by inviting fan reps on to ask why fans are racist rather than asking players how they feel about racism. Its a fan problem and fans have to solve it.
Things have not got better. It’s just more subtle now. The problem is we can call for education we can excuse it as ignorance. However the fact that the media don’t do enough, players and the football authorities don’t do enough. On the supermarket story it happens to me all the time. Sub conscious racism is abundant. Unless stronger measures are taken nothing will change and the colour of a man’s skin will be a defining factor for all time
In AFL we shamed a 13 yr old and her family on national tv for saying racist things to a player - she then has to go through education … (her face was blurred after it) lols, we went all out on shaming people to the point they apologised nationally. Hadn’t really happened again cos no one wants to be shamed on national Tv. What also helped was other fans who called them out and had every person saying racist things pointed out and kicked out of the stadium.
Seems a bit mad that, publicly shaming a child. Even if the ethics around what they did is wrong, they almost seem like a martyr. Racism at the end of the day is a societal issue. No surprise the worst places for racism are also the places where racist politics has a bigger voice. Italy elected someone who wanted to have guard dogs at the beaches that would attack any migrants who attempted to land in Italy.😊
@@kriissyy09ify nah - the kid and family learned and no one did it again. The footballers did say to leave the kid alone as it was a mistake but the fact that the kid and family had to go through education on racism was probably what’s was needed for the nation to see. everyone was more upset with the kids family than anything. Look it up - AFL Adam Goodes and a documentary on his journey was made of it.
@@kaboutertje1561 oh don’t get me wrong, the footballer was labelled a bully and abused for two years with boos but then a documentary came out and the games better now. I think the majority didn’t like the fact that he was calling out a child to blame the parents - the child is 13 going on 14 and knows better. Let’s be real - that’s the age that knows better than to call someone with dark coloured skin and ape.
I always thought you have to be careful to some extent talking about point deductions etc... what's to stop someone from a rival team going to a match posing as a fan and hurling abuse knowing that it will be the club they hate getting punished as a result?
When walking off the pitch, and punishing all the fans for what some idiots are doing.... what will that do, looking forward...? It should be a way of punishing the idiots and not all that have come to enjoy brilliant football.... Hopefully in the future it will stop ❤️
Hopefully the fans will self police those idiots. But the real reason walking off hurts football is the viewing figures and revenue. If Sky or BT start losing games and views for games being called off, you'd soon see how quickly they're able to do something about it

Having a stressful day at work but this podcast made me laugh at loud 😂😂😂
The problem with point deduction is that will get fake fans going to away grounds to make there rivals miss out on points.
I’m still somewhat baffled how half a stadium can sing a song about Harry Kane having a speech impediment, with numerous kids possibly making their way through life with similar characteristics sat both in the crowd and watching at home, and it be completely fine and dandy.
Who said it's fine and dandy?
Its banter mate man up.
@@hunsler1006 if you knew what fine or dandy meant you’d probably not have asked such a stupid question.
@@jsss3604tell that to your 13yr old daughter with a lisp next time she’s at the footie - or if she’s been taken off you by the council, try and imagine it.
@@Uygkuyfkutfkytfkutfv I know what they both mean, and yes, I'm sure what you meant to say is it doesn't get as much press. But surely you who, who has the confidence to suggest someone else is an idiot, wouldn't compare racism to an isolated player having a speech impediment?
Thank. 😍😍
Us fans used to police it at united, only way to do it, fans need to sort out the idiots
Question for your Q&A episode this week. Why does Gary’s background remain the same in every episode yet Alan and especially Micah’s changes most episodes? How many houses….sorry….penthouse apartments and mansions does Micah have? 😂😂😂
I can answer the first part for you but F knows where Micah’s joining in from each episode 😂
@@samprizeman4509 He does it from a different house every time 😂
I haven't heard anyone say it, but VAR is being used to fix matches, in my opinion.
Liverpool fan...Love Salah...To have Nunez...Diaz...Jota...Gakpo...and the rest...Have a watch of Inside Anfield training....It is intense...Enjoyable...Team Orientated...Great Environment
Ian would have a few stories to tell - he was a pioneer for all black kids … worldwide
On the racism topic - if a club is fined, where does the money go? There needs to be an independent body so that when there is an incident, FA/FIFA themselves are hit with a heavy fine. Then you'll see how quickly they start to really pay attention to it.
Gary, i think your picture isn't hung straight
As a wednesday fan I know my fan base and we are all appalled by that ‘fan’
There’s no place for that or that person
Liam palmer and Darren Moore gave me the best football experience that I’ll
Probably ever experience
We don’t want this in our game
Gary, we catalans are Catalan speakers , thank you for give presence in your program to our native Catalan Language that is still oppressed by the spanish speakers,
Any fan caught be racist ban for life. A group of fans doing it ban them ban a club from having away tickets asoonas you restrict money for clubs change will happen
racism needs to be more important than FFP start docking points and hit fans where it really hurts, if they are not true fans the proper fans in the crowd will point them out
Rival fans would go into their rivals stadiums & shout racist abuse to get them docked points. It's unworkable
its only unworkable because the clubs are all guilty of sweeping it under the carpet

I hope Alan's right--but I'm not sure every player or staff would support a walk off. Maybe in the EPL, but not everywhere at all.
Despite the pundits constantly commenting on “performances” of individual players every LFC fan knows our biggest strength is TEAM PERFORMANCE, zero individual player egos or accolades…Klopp is a genius
What about a mention of B’hams change with the new manager now Rooney’s departure?
Totally agree with more impactful sanctions such as point deduction, closed stadiums and banning of fans. Following this, these clubs should be heavily fined and made part of a program to implement and monitor if corrvective meausres are put in place. If no improvements ban the teams from local and international competitions, no transfers, we need to go "heavy" to minimize or hopefully irradicate this plague called racism.
Btw - Work on your Portuguese 😂 its "Jota Goal"! Keep up the good work lads!
What if one fan from your club says something racist or makes a racist gesture at a game - you wouldn’t complain about being deducted points for that?
I remember Marvin Sordell accusing Millwall of being racist, he ran around to the papers saying it’s unfair, when questioned by the FA he explained that he was called fish face.
Turns out it was a 9 year old boy, referencing his face and big eyes.
1 or 3 people in a country does not make a country or fan base racist. 95% of the online abuse is from Eastern Europe.
95% are you insane? 😂
@@kissg6734 no, there was actual market research done commissioned every year for the last three years. Google search it
Are you arguing that racism doesn’t exist in the UK?
Your nearly good enough to be on the telly 😊
Love you guys
Just identify the bad apples and ban them from going to stadiums why bother with fines
Why does this not happen in rugby, cricket, golf, tennis. Why is it a problem with football fans.
Rugby is game for barbarians, played by gentlemen
I think this has something to do with the social demographics that gravitate to the different sports, especially when it comes to watching them live.
I blame the other fans who let that shit happen and just sit and watch
If they got sorted out by their own fans I'm sure it wouldn't last long
But then again ... uneducated people will be uneducated people
Life time bans fines and public shaming people would also help ...
Brentford goal was cheating but it was so funny how Tony done it, was genius.
I bet he enjoyed that 😂
Instead of the players leave, clear the section of fans or the stand or the stadium.
Unless stronger measures are taken nothing will change and the colour of a man’s skin will be a defining factor for all time
Steven maignan? Gary’s showing his age and forgetting names 😂 love the podcast
40:17 why not talk more about Ipswich? 😅
This does not sound like a solution at all bullying a kid for the behaviour.
@@kriissyy09ify wait are you serious about Italy and the guard dogs? That’s mad
In Asian countries, racism is so heavy, I think we just accept them and continue with life and what we are doing.
Most of the best players to kick a ball were black pele ,drogba ,R9, Barnes ,ince to name a few
I’m against economic illegal immigrants not based upon colour
Glad to hear your not against refugees or asylum seekers then, as they're not illegal or immigrants 👍
Imagine trying to use the word woke as an insult
Always good fun to get those people to try to explain why being considerate is a bad thing
I always thought you have to be careful to some extent talking about point deductions etc... what's to stop someone from a rival team going to a match posing as a fan and hurling abuse knowing that it will be the club they hate getting punished as a result?
Where do you draw the line as well? In Italy it tends to be a large number of fans, but here it tends to be individual idiots.
If Sky or BT start losing games and views for games being called off, you'd soon see how quickly they're able to do something about it
Is that snus in Micha's mouth at 45:24?
