I decided Daichi was my favorite character after about 4 seasons lol, which just proves your intuition is just otherworldly. I didn't have a favorite character at first until I saw a reaction video and someone talked about theirs (I think theirs was Nishinoya). I then thought about it and the character that came to mind was Daichi. He's the character I most want to emulate in life.

One of the coolest things about Haikyuu is how it portrays the other teams as people who also love and enjoy the sport and also have their own histories and emotional relationships with volleyball and their teams. It’s not the type of series where you have an evil villain, but antagonists who are high school kids who love volleyball just like our Karasu boys.

This was 100% the episode I was waiting for you to react to. This episode always gets me and it's not often that anime or shows in general encapsulate what it's like to lose. 💖

This episode feels like a turning point in the series. It’s the first episode where the viewer understands that this show is also going to tell a story of loss as much as triumph. There’s always going to be someone who worked harder, trained harder, was just a little bit luckier. You can never win 100% of the time. Great reaction to a great episode! Love from a fellow Canadian ❤️❤️

Anyway I just meant that the loss is truly focussed on here, not something that is over come, as for example, the loss in the first episode is. Hinata loses his first game, but moves forward in the long run. In this episode, loss of the game is truly the end of these players’ volleyball experiences. I hope that helps you understand what I meant.
And please be nicer next time. I’m also a human being.

I think one element of Haikyuu that is criminally understated is how much respect it has for Volleyball. How harsh the training and how hard victory comes by, how brutal and unforgiving the tournaments and how teams are chased out of the court when they lose, and as shown perhaps best in this episode, how players reflect on despite the pain and the losses, they still love and feel loved for being able to have played the sport. Cheesy as it may sound, 'Connecting' is the motto of Nekoma, the true theme of Haikyuu, and this love and respect for Volleyball is one pillar that keeps everyone connected to each other (and of course, in time, us to the characters).
Haikyuu is truly the greatest work of literature of the 21st century.

I think it's so crazy how a single loss means you no longer get to play (both the Interhigh and Spring Tourney in Japan are like that, a single loss = elimination). I was watching a few videos about this year's Spring Tourney matches, and one girl from a losing team (I think she was their ace) said something that really made me teary-eyed: "I had wanted to shine on the court a bit longer." She said it while barely managing to hold back her tears.
That's when it really hit me how real Ikejiri's words are. Sure, Haikyu is a work of fiction, but the emotions are real. The frustration and sadness is all real. Hundreds of teams play the game to win, but only one team goes on to be the "main characters" for that season. And for some, the time to become the "heroes" never comes.
But both the losers and winners can gain something from the experience. They can use it to better themselves and keep playing. They can also learn life lessons that they'll take with them even if/after they stop playing volleyball. All that and more is woven so masterfully into the story of Haikyu.

  • @frolovartur1986

Something about Hinata's reaction to winning that you want to keep in mind coming forward. Haikyuu is of those rare stories, where winning - proving you're the strongest - isn't the goal. The goal is to stay on the court the longest, but that can be achieved only though winning.
The greatest prize of them all for a lot of Haikyuu characters is playing volleyball.

I gotta say, this episode is the episode that really hook me into haikyuu. Because this episode show that even an extra has a story to tell. I have seen a lot af sport anime and most are usually would just ignore the extra character story and just focus on the main character. As I first watch this episode, I already know karasuno gonna win easily. If they cut off the ikejiri story, it will not effect the story much but this anime care for the characters even if they just appear in one episode. Haikyuu make the best out off these characters, creating real humans out off extras that usually don't mean much and forgotten in other sport anime. This episode tell me that haikyuu gonna be a great anime and manga.

For someone who has never hold a real interest in watching competitive sports, this was THE episode that got me falling in love with a sport as an audience. It didn’t just capture the sportsmanship among players, the techniques, skills and power required but it has also portrayed the experience of a player and the sport, what it means to them, the kind of growth they had (be it good or bad) and the lessons they learnt from it. Sports has always been kind of a seeing disconnected thing for me as an audience, but through this anime, i have grown to understand a fraction of the work and processes behind a competitive sport, allowing me to appreciate a competition more.

This episode gets me every single time. When I played volleyball, I was more often on the losers' end than the winners' end, so one thing I remember from my first time through the show (It's now my 8th or 9th time) is how much I loved how it recognizes both sides of a match. Sometimes I remember the losses more vividly than the wins, and along with that, the growth that came from those losses.

So something to consider here is Ikejiri and Michimiya are both seniors which means this is likely their last tournament at least in high school. That is one of the reasons they are so full of regret because this could be the last match they play. In Japan a lot of seniors will retire after this tourney because of the competitive nature of academics and needing to compete for the college they want with other students.

That scene with all the teams who lost had me cry a river the first time I watched Haikyuu; this is probably the episode who touched me the most and that made me fell completely in love with the show. I love how Hinata stops and looks at Ikejiri retreating: I think Hinata can relate to him because of what happened to him in middle school and seeing how much this loss affected Ikejiri probably gave Hinata an extra motivation (as if he needed it) to keep on his win streak.

      @Foranoda 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@thatsroughbuddy_ I couldn't find that "2 months" line skimming through episodes 11 to 14, but I found some dates mentioned directly.
though there's no definitive date for the practice game against seijoh, we know it takes place in April, and on a tuesday. BUT considering that the school year had just begun on april 1st, and the first-year 3v3 was the following saturday, the match against seijoh can only have taken place on April 10th, 17th or 24th. personally, 17th sounds about right.
the practice game with nekoma is on May 6th. we even see a calendar in episode 11 showing that.
In episode 14, coach Ukai says that the preliminaries start on June 2nd.
maybe the line referring to 2 months after the nekoma training game was meant for the actual tournament, not the preliminaries?

What I love about this episode is that it further punches the point that losing is a reality. Even if we, the viewers, are focused on Karasuno since they're the "protagonists" of the show, we get to acknowledge that the other teams are also people (fictional but still), people that get to feel things outside of what the Karasuno people are feeling. It further makes us believe that their world is alive and not just static. People outside Karasuno have lives on their own and have feelings on their own and it just makes me love the show even more.

I can't believe we're here now. This is one of my fave episode ever because this is the episode that truly attached me to Haikyuu. I have watched sports anime before and what I like about this is they truly show the other side which is the "losers' side" and not just the opposing team of Karasuno but ALL of the teams that were done in the tournament.
It's like reminding us that all of the players here are also just like Karasuno, they train hard and give their all but at the end of the day, there will be one team which will win each match but it does not take away that each player also have their own journey and story, it's just that the the main focus of THIS story is Karasuno.
And as an athlete, it truly touched my heart because it does not disregard the effort and hardwork each player has given no matter the result of the game.

It's not necessarily the highlight of this episode but, for the context of Hinata being so surprised they won we've gotta remember that this is Hinata's very first official win. His first match was a blowout in middle-school this is his second ever official match of volleyball, at this moment he's probably in disbelief after how badly he wanted to be able to play on the court with a team of his own.

I always get teary eyed during that montage of the teams that lost. Maybe it's the music that hits perfectly for that scene. It's a sad, somber string variation on the main melody/motif from the "Volleyball" musical theme from the soundtrack

But rewatching the first season with you has been sooooo fun and therapeutic for me. I love watching your commentaries as a volleyball player. This whole series is so damn good to watch, really. I can't wait for you to experience their growth. Them and the opponents they face, at the end of the day Haikyuu reminds us that every single player is here to win the game. That everyone has worked hard at their own levels. Now, no matter whichever sports I watch, I am appreciating both teams equally, intaking their individual growth and talent. The way this manga was made, leaves me speechless every-single-time. You can really tell that the manga artist who made this series is in love with volleyball and has been an excellent sports person himself. Can't wait for season 5 to be animated!

Lowkey one of my favorite episodes, despite there not being that much "hype" around it, because it really showcases the feeling of a tournament, for the winners but especially the losers. That feeling of regret, frustration, and sometimes a bit of relief. It's so real and honest that in sports, no one wins all the time. Sometimes taking a loss well is just as important as winning. Amazing reaction!

i love haikyuu so much but i've never really had friends to talk about it with (my friends let me talk about it to them because they know it's important to me, but it's not the same because they've never seen it & i know they aren't invested in the series). watching your reaction videos has felt like rewatching the show with a friend & i didn't know how happy that would make me. i'm putting them on in the background a lot these days so i can binge them & catch up & watch your season two reactions as they come out. love how you explain some of the technical stuff & connect moments to your own experience. i'm inspired by how inspiring you find some of these stories. thank you, sarah!

Haikyuu really nails the feeling of being involved in a sport / team. That anxiety and tension before a match, the freedom and stress during it, and the the joy / pain of the result. Masterful work!

I would like to add even more feels to the scene that showed the teams that lost their first game. In Japan high school is only three years long and most 3rd years only play sports in spring. After their last game in the spring tournament 3rd years are encouraged to quit sports to focus on college entrance exams. Most of the time the only 3rd years that continue to play are either planning to play in college or go go pro. So for Ikejiri and Michymia (sorry if I spelled their names wrong) this was the last game they may ever get to play unless they join an adult team later in life. But for the foreseeable future they will not be playing anymore. That’s why they both said “I played volleyball too.”

I just found your channel and am binging your reaction videos everyday and this episode might just be my most favorite out of all of them. Michimiya and Ikijiri were the characters i most related to aside from Hinata (me being 4'11) and Nishinoya (me being a libero most of middle school-highschool). I related to those two a lot even if they were shown only for a little bit cus when I got to the end of highschool through college, I stopped playing that much compared to when I was a kid cus I felt like volleyball was a pipe dream. I was so insecure about my height but it was only then in college I realized how if I just didn't give up that early, I could've been playing the first sport I fell in love with for awhile longer. My coach that time asked me to try spiking over the net like any attacker would. Take note I only played defense most of my life and always thought I could never jump as high as the net, but despite being timid about it and telling him I couldn't do it, he encouraged me as gentle as he could and just believed in me so much, even though he's never seen me jump. You know in the anime when Hinata always loved talking about how even if he was small, when he spikes the net opens up and he could see the horizon? I had that exact moment when I jumped and landed the spike in the line. I was so moved that I was able to nail it, better than I ever thought I could, despite all my insecurities. So when this anime came out, I was literally sobbing almost every episode especially this one cus if only I tried harder and believed in myself more, I could be on the court playing right now. Thank you so much for taking time off of your very busy life to watch this little anime that inspires so many people to love the sport regardless if they ever played it, stopped playing it, or is still playing ❤

"Even tho I wanted (Karasuno) to win and, like, destroy them, my heart is still broken" - and that's basically the whole Haikyuu for you. No matter how matches end, there's almost always that feeling of sadness over the team that lost, it's always bittersweet. This scene never fails to make me cry, even tho I'm not an athlete and probably never was in that spot, I just can empathize with that (or just a crybaby over fictional characters and stories lol).
About the Oikawa's look, he said so himself after that practice match with Seijoh: he was looking forward to see how Karasuno will progress and wanted to "squash" Kageyama in official game as setter on setter. Like "yes, I see that you're evolving fast, but I'm still gonna *destroy* you while looking absolutely perfect" 😁

I love it when sports anime or shows have the losers watching and supporting the winners. It almost feels as if the winners are carrying on the will of those they challenged to get there.
Plus, I suppose there is some bragging rights to say that the team that beat you is the one that took the entire tournament. No one can really say you didn't try as hard as any other team if no one else could beat them either.
