Wowwwww Nationals came on VERY fast! I was not expecting this! The episode was a little slow to start and then all of a sudden BAM! and we are in Tokyo!
I can't even begin to express how exciting it is to see all of my favorite characters from throughout the series, and I am LOVING a Kiyoko backstory. Keep it coming!!

Sarah Pavan is a Canadian beach volleyball Olympian and World Champion. She is the 3-time FIVB World Tour Best Blocker, and one half of 2019’s Most Outstanding Team. Before playing beach volleyball, Sarah Pavan was one of the world’s top indoor volleyball players. She had an impressive professional career in Italy, Brazil, South Korea, and China, and represented the Canadian Indoor National Team.

its hard to remember that Hinata has gone through a lot, probably more than some of the members of the team
I mean he lost his only game of volleyball after years of practicing by himself trying to get a team together and he was still committed to going to the school the little giant went to. He did all this in a sport where being tall is the advantage too.
It makes sense, Daichi is Mr. Gloomy who also grinds his teeth and works his a** off. Hinata is the opposite, he's Mr. Sunshine who tries to make good on any situation through sheer enthusiasm.

Fun fact about the jogging scene between Kageyama, Hinata and Tsukishima!
In the official light novel of Haikyuu! (was not written by the author Furudate himself, but he participates in the illustration), Tsukishima eventually lost track of Hinata and Kageyama as his bike got broken. Kageyama and Hinata noticed Tsukki’s disappearance so they challenged each other to see who’s the fastest one to find him. Eventually the three scattered all over the center of Tokyo. When Tsukishima texted where were they, he got the same reply as “Im at the cool building!”. After some minutes of frustration Tsukki took the Tokyo Tower to be the destination and told Kags and Hinata to hurry up and get there or else they would lose to one another. Fortunately they both manage to get there safely, Hinata told a story where he couldn’t see the Tokyo Tower so he asked a group of old man, who’s also heading to Tokyo Tower, to accopany him. Hinata even got some sweets from them, the three first years ran home under the gleaming stars!!

The funniest part to me is that Daichi's birthday is December 31st. He literally got a nightmare right after his 18th birthday, poor thing.
Also Asahi's birthday is January 1st, I'm mad that nobody wished him a happy bday

That scene hit me pretty hard because I was that awkward boy years ago. Now I cringe while remembering my own moments and how they must have looked to others.
Hahaha as a former teenage boy, it's 100 % accurate. It was a lot of big "where did all my brain cells go??" moments.

Oh my gosh, I am having an internal MELTDOWN as we approach the end. My soul is just not ready for this! I originally thought that this was going to feel like a filler episode, but I loved it soooooo much! It was definitely not that!

A little of information regarding the Spring Nationals Tournament:
52 teams qualify for the tournament. These teams include:
47 prefectural winners.
4 additional representatives from Hokkaido, Kanagawa, Tokyo, and Osaka in RL (but Aichi in manga/anime).
1 additional team from hosting prefecture (Tokyo), which is Nekoma.
Because there are 52 teams in a 64-team bracket, 12 teams get a bye in the first round. These 12 teams include the best 4 teams from Summer Interhigh Tournament, plus 8 lucky teams by random drawing. Note: Itachiyama (Sakusa's team) beat Inarizaki (Atsumu Miya's team) at Summer Interhigh Finals, so they're #1 and #2 seeds.
So 40 teams play in the first round, with 20 teams advancing to second round, joined by the 12 teams that got a bye, making it 32 teams for second round.
In ep 11, it says 40 teams disappear after Day 1, it means 20 boys teams and 20 girls teams.
If you like tidbits and fun facts, I've got some I know you'll enjoy. In the official character profiles from the manga, one of the things that's included is each character's current concern. Less than half are actually related to volleyball, all of them are amusing. Here are some highlights, first from Karasuno:
Hinata: He can't palm a volleyball.
Kageyama: He gets the feeling animals dislike him.
Daichi: His incessant dreams about the vice-principal's flying wig.
Asahi: When he tells people he's a student nobody believes him, first-years are afraid of him, girls in his class say things like "even though he looks like that, he's actually really weak" and then get all disappointed, future plans, the captain is scary...-[cut for length]
Nishinoya: None!!!
Sugawara: A lot of his juniors are bigger than him.
Ukai: He's not even 30 but his parents are telling him "Hurry up and get married already"
Takeda: His students tell him "Your glasses are totally lame, Sensei!"
And some highlights from other schools;
Oikawa: When he tried to talk to Karasuno's pretty manager he got utterly ignored. (But it's okay, she was probably just shy, and it's not like he's all that bothered by it, nope not at all. - Oikawa said to himself.)
Kenma: Summer is hot and winter is cold.
Kuroo: He can't get rid of his bedhead.
Aone: When he's riding the train nobody will sit beside him.
Futakuchi: He has to get his wisdom teeth pulled.
Tendou: None of his teammates want to talk about manga.
Bokuto: "How do you write 'concern'?"
Atsumu: It's the time of year where his fingertips get really dry.

Also yes, this whole episode is so wholesome! Seeing bits of them interacting outside of the volleyball context just fills my heart with joy ❤ they are like a family, highschool sports teams in my country are nothing like this, so this is super cute u.u
I honestly loved this. I thought it was going to be a "filler" episode, but it was just too good.
Noya's track for the "I'm Awesome" video is actually a track from "Run with the Wind" - "Demon Sergeant"! The series share one composer (Yuki Hayashi), and he's a huge fan of both!
The way they described Spring Tournament is fairly accurate. I was fortunate to have visited Day 1 of the tournament in January 2020 (the last one before corona) - to say that it was Epic would be an understatement. Very crowded, very exciting, with a few of extra booths for entertainment, it's pretty much a big volleyball festival.
Oh, and a small thing, but the number of teams for the entire tournament is actually just under a hundred as there is usually 2 teams per prefecture (boys and girls). The current info says it's 52 teams for boys and for girls.
Thanks for clarifying (again)! I thought that 47 was a weird number, but I didn't realize that it was the number of prefectures. It is so amazing to me that high school volleyball is so popular and draws such a crowd!
@@SarahPavanVolleyball well funnily enough haikyu helped made that happen. Before the release the amount of people in volleyball clubs would go down by several percent each year. And i think it was since season twos release its steadily increasing.

To be fair, Winners and Losers is absolutely one of the best episodes.
The opening ceremony never fails to give me the chills, it is also like a reunion for all the boys in training camp it’s so exciting.

Kiyoko and Yachi's relationship is so precious, they're just what the other needs - a wise and cool senpai to guide and help Yachi who's still inexperienced and a bit insecure and a cute little kouhai for Kiyoko to talk to so she won't feel lonely anymore. I know she had the boys but I'm so happy she finally has a girl around her age to talk to ^^
I literally cried like a proud mom while watching this episode. I'm still thinking like 'Wow, they made it my boys really made it' gave me full body chills!
I felt like their mom too! Let me take a photo and frame it!
I think no one is gonna say anything against the Season 1 Episode 16, as that episode showcases what and why haikyuu is different from all other sports anime's.
and Heads Up!!! the next episode is gonna hit you in so many amazing ways but not in a way you generally expect, so i look forward to seeing you react to that.

Just for tips, the Haru-ko tournament (All Japan High School Volleyball Tournament) is a real thing. Every match is televised on national TV. It's actually really big over here.
It does not matter how many times I rewatched this episode I am always pumped up like I am the one to compete😅

The Ikijeri episode "Losers' was honestly such a good episode. Being a competitive player in many sports through college, that episode just hit the feels on such a personal level and was depicted beautifully about the nature of competition. Thanks for that instant reminder again! Can't wait for the weeks to come!

25:32 When the Little Giant made it to Haru-Kou nationals (back when it was actually held during spring break), the main venue was the National Yoyogi Stadium, while the main venue since Haru-Kou was moved to January is the Tokyo Gymnasium. For those who were not sure what Kageyama's comment there meant.

I will always love that the music playing in the background of the ceremony was an orchestral version of Phoenix, the opening for the first half of season 4.
A fun little detail is that song the orchestra played when they announced all the schools from the different regions is the same as the intro song. Only noticed it once I re-watched it.

The opening ceremony scene never fails to give me goosebumps. And honestly, the real thing feels just as stirring to watch.
High school volleyball in Japan gets really crazy, and you'll find a lot of enthusiasts who mainly follow high school volleyball. Also, some players who stand out get scouted into the pro leagues and the national teams even before they graduate. Over the past few years, the standard has gotten even higher as high school teams get better and better, with some even being trained by old Olympics players or coaches (and not just Japanese ones). It's looking really good for the future of Japanese volleyball, and just volleyball in general

A little late, but in Japan there's the belief that the first dream of the year foretells how the year will go for the dreamer. That explains why Daichi was so disturbed by that dream.
Even though I was binging through Haikyuu, it still took me a few more seconds to remember Ikejiri than you did but it'd take me ten more rewatches to remember the episode number and title he appeared in. That "Ikejiri from Episode 16 Winners and Losers" had my jaw dropped to the floor as much as when I see a freakish quick from Kageyama and Hinata or a match-winning play. I have no doubts such a great memory plays into your performance during a match. Huge respect to the World Champion.

I'm pretty sure there's an error in translation of the number 47 part. 47 is the number of prefectures so the number of teams (with both girls and boys) would at least be double of that, not to mention some places like Tokyo gets more than two representatives.

@@SarahPavanVolleyball Yes, these tournaments will consist of teams 64-68 teams with a seed system utilizing "bye's" for top seeded teams. So for example Itachiyama (Sakusa and Komori's team) are ranked number 1 in the Nation, so they don't have to play in round 1 like Karasuno.

This was talked about in season 2, but the Skytree or Tokyo Tower is a historic landmark in Japan. The Eiffel tower is a transmission tower too, but you wouldn't think of it that way. If you get the chance you should look up some of the videos of people visiting the Tokyo Tower, it's pretty impressive.
I've been watching this reaction series without the OPs and EDs and hearing "Tsumeato ga" gave me some big bomb goosebumps

(for some reason this got delete when I tried to edit my comment) I love your reactions. I liked how you called out the dream right away. I also loved yout reaction to when Kuroo came onto the scene and his rivalry with Daichi. As for Sakusa he is a germaphobe so he is always washing his hands and staying away from contact so that is why he always wears a mask. I wish that I told you ahead of time in the last video about Suga's two choatic scenes. The first one when the 3rd years were on their way to the shrine and the rest of the shrine scene. The 2nd one when Daichi said he was going to talk to the coach and put Ennoshita in charge and Suga was like Hey I am the Vice Captain you should have asked me. Then Daichi called him out for being a troublemaker as well and Suga's reaction to that. I was hoping for your reaction to those two scenes since you like seeing Suga's choatic side.
Suga plays it so cool until he just doesn't 😂 I love him, and even though he is mature compared to the other guys, he still shows that he is a high school boy every now and then.

I am amazed at this woman's memory.
I love the second part of the season four, it pays off in such great ways, don't worry kiyoko will have more moments soon, what ilove about haikyuu is that it shows that not everyone can win and even for the losers life goes on in good ways as well. Atsumu's game is closing in, and maybe you will see he's not a bad guy at all, i would consider him to be somewhat of a young kobe bryant analog.
Good analogy re Kobe. I am curious to see how he acts during a match.

So with Ennoshita I'm gonna leave whether or not he plays a big role up in the air, but they are setting him up to take over the captain role after daichi graduates, this started around the Seijoh match ,if i remembered correctly, where he subbed in for Daichi while he was out for a injury, now they are just giving him more screen time to observe the rest of the team, and as shown with his interaction with hinata, kageyama, and tsuki is starting do a bit of the leader roles
Yeah but what about Kinnoshita? He has come up out of nowhere in the last few episodes.
@@SarahPavanVolleyball kinnoshita is more a representative showing that the rest of the team are getting motivated to try and do what they can to help out, especially after how yamaguchi has been able to contribute with his jump floaters

In Japanese, traditionally, the first dream one has in the new year and it contents foretell the luck of the dreamer in the ensuing year.
It is considered to be particularly good luck to dream of Mount Fuji, a hawk, and an eggplant. (Credit to wikipedia for explaing it better!)
Season 1 episode 16 being one of your favorites is def not a hot take - it's one of mine as well! I always look forward to it and it never fails to hit me right in the feels.

I think the reason why they’re able to change or evolve as a team so fast is the culture of Japan. The Japanese put the group over individuality. In the US or other cultures, people believe the individuality trumps all, so we tend to clash more when it comes to achieving team mindsets at young age compared to the Japanese or other Asian cultures.
