- Electronic drums have been around since the 1960s, and with each generation, we witness a whole new set of technologies being used to provide drummers with innovative ways of producing sounds on a drum set. In the 1980s, we had the Simmons SDS-V; the 2000s brought us V-drums. Now, in 2023, we are stepping into an entirely new realm of electronic percussive possibilities. Today, we will explore an entirely new approach to connecting drummers with electronic drumming.

As a passionate drummer since the age of 6, I've traversed the world of music in ways many might find eclectic. From being a percussionist in symphonic orchestras and philharmonic ensembles, to playing in rock, metal, and especially post-rock-metal-progressive bands.
I've also had the opportunity to jump deep into electronic soundscapes, DJing, even establishing my own music label dedicated to uniquely eclectic electronic artists.
Recently, I've found myself drawn to experimental and contemporary music, looking to blur the lines between electronic and acoustic worlds.
Inspired by artists like Nils Frahm, who seamlessly integrate the organic and the electronic, I envision a long-term solo project that pushes boundaries and creates an intense live experience around the drum as the main character. I've already prototyped some pieces with Ableton Live and traditional druming. But the EVANS Hybrid presented seems like a groundbreaking tool to bring my vision to life.
Well this is how I would use this innovation I think : half of the drum with the EVANS Hybrid and half with the traditional acoustics to explore all the possibilities and combinaisons.
Congratulations! You have been selected the winner of the EVANS Hybrid Sensory Percussion setup! Please email Kyle @ krad@drumeo.com to claim your prize!
The creativity seems endless when playing using this Evans Hybrid! I think I would use it for composing and practicing. Thanks for showing us the possibilities, Philo, Kyle and Dave!
I don’t know. I’ll stick with my Roland TD 27 and EZdrummer 3 with my acoustic to electronic conversion kit!😝
Hey, just out of curiosity, could you tell me what conversion kit you are using?
And which cymbals?
I am looking into getting something like this myself.
It is mind blowing what SUNHOUSE INC has been doing. Very creative ❤
So it's all about the software, pad is the same
I can just imagine using this to do loop covers. Creating the whole song only using the drums with these triggers. I think that would be super cool!
As we step into the future , exciting developments in piezo technology to promise to revolutianize e- drums even further .
WOW! How would I use this Damn. This is not just an effects machine. When I write music now I use a Roland Fantom- 8 and a Pearl drum set. And two electronic pads. But this setup with so many zones. You could literally have a drum set workstation. This is a Fantom Drumset. What a dream! Evans Hybrid baby.
I love playing on my e-drum and this is a whole new world full of possibilities. Love every sound of that kit. Is this the future of drumming, i don't know. Is the future of electronic drums, yes.
My comment for a chance to win one of those great kits, here we go 🤞:
I would start using it as a practice tool, probably I would turn this small acoustic drum kit that I have into a practice one that I could use at home. Not only it has a great potential, but It also seems to be a very quiet option.
So, at first I would set it up to use mainly acoustic sound kits while gradually experimenting with all the electronic sounds and options.
How does it sound?
I love this type of thing. I think my favorite thing to do with it would be to create random presets, play and see what happens spontaneously.
I am a drummer and electronic musician. I mostly play drums and percussion, so composing and preforming My electronic music on drums makes sense. I love sound design. I enjoy creating sounds that are unique to my music. i like that I can do that with this system. I would use this all the time for composing and performing. I think creating sounds and then improvising with them and see what happens would be really cool, just exploring. All in all I would make some music that I would otherwise not be able to and have fun doing so.
Very cool, I wish they’d have just let her play more! It’s why she was there.
I scrolled through and couldn't find much playing.
YES IT CAME OUT!!! So happy you brought Philo here, she's a star 🥰
Interesting. Obviously we are only hearing a fraction of the sounds available, but there is a lot of potential. I do like using my acoustic kit at gigs, however at smaller venues (which is where the average musician often plays) I can never play with full dynamics, as hard hits are just too loud. With a good mix of acoustic and electronic samples, I could play with full dynamics, but keep to a suitable volume. The one thing that does strike me is that to use the full potential of the system (i.e. different sounds from different zones of the drum) will require a lot of accuracy (as an ex punk drummer, not something I am always that good at!).
It has up to ten zones per drum, but you can make it as simple as rim/head! so it can work for everyone!
This is super cool. I wish I had the time and money to invest in something like this.
Wow. I would use that next gen electronic tech to both 1) learn how to incorporate recording and computer editing into my drumming practice, and 2) record drum covers of my favorite 80s tunes with very synthetic electronic sounds. My goal would be to make Dave's new haircut stand on end.
I would definitely use this to make my acoustic kit hybrid. Would be amazing for quiet practice at home with mesh heads to take it to a whole new level. I can see the possibilities of performance with a n acoustic kit too!
I'm old school and old frankly! A lot of the sounds wouldn't be of use to me but music and technology marches on. One for up and coming younger drummers perhaps!
I sure hope this is the future of electronic drums! As a forever renter I'll probably never be able to have the acoustic kit of my dreams so I need electronic triggering to get better and cheaper!
I would use it with my acoustic drums for percussion effects
I would like to set them up and use them in church. There seems to be so many cool and atmospheric things you can do with it that would be a really good place to experiment.
I want this trigger setup because I want to drum more and experiment more, but because of my neighbors I can only play till 3:00 pm and that holds my creativity back. A fully triggered setup will help a lot to play more frequently and to improve my skills. It was also a dream to have a hybrid set-up, but they are very expensive for a student budget.
I've been wanting to get a decent e-kit to be able to practice with and relearn how to play a full kit with after years without any gear.
While this kit has WAY more features than I was looking for, I would never miss an opportunity to grab a kit like this where I could spend hours just playing with the software!
i remember playing those first gen yamaha ekits with the awful rock hard pads and i thought it was the most amazing thing ever. look how far we've come!
Would love to have this system! I really enjoy creating melodies and being able to combine them with drums on one kit would be awesome!
Always loved the Simmons e drum! It’s just something about the look of it and thinking about all the hits that was made from it in the 80s!
Oh, I’d love to win one of those! I’ve already contemplated hooking up my Alesis Kit to Max/MSP for something like this, but it looks like this would open up so many more possibilities for experimental electronic music!
I'd try to create melodic and harmonic ideas with the drums and use to practice at home
I'd use it to practice details like rim-shot accuracy whithout disturbing my neighbours. No other e-drums can do that :(
Hmm, I don't know about that...
I have always been traditional and old-school for my drums, despite the fact that there have been many terrific technological advancements to the instrument. But, nevertheless, this is amazing 👍
What’d I do: I have a beat up, converted to concert tom Pearl export- I’d put mesh heads on a couple of those, one on my snare and mix it into my acoustic set.
I would love to experiment with this technology for creative music production and composition. I'm sure that with time, the ML algorithm will get better and better, so being able to exploit such technology and extract as much information as posible from the dynamics and positional triggering would unlock endless possibilities.
I would have time to practice for my band. And finally have a setup to record some tracks.
She has done crazy jams with these and some Elektron gear on her Instagram stories. I think there is a ton of potential in using it to interface with other synthesizers.
I wanted to get these a few years ago and had the vision of creating a video/light show with music for it played through these and light FX triggered by them also
That kit is awesome, I’d use it to record for my friends, I currently just use my phone so it’d be such an upgrade, good luck all!
I would use it as a learning tool. Beginner here. This seems like the future of electronic drums.
I would use it to control effects and video effects in Ableton. Looks interesting. Thanks to Philo. Hope to see you for a Clinic in Berlin.
With all the melodic possibilities, I'd use this do play solo pieces with a hybrid setup. I love to jam to loops on other instruments and would love to experience that improve jam style of playing, but with drums.
I'd love to adapt my acoustic kit with this ekit and mesh heads and then be able to practice, play and create at home.
I would use it in conjunction with my acoustic set and use an aux snare and some extra toms to have a hybrid kit. I think it's a cool thing to bring into your kit.
This is awesome as I think hybrid drums are evolving and this may be the next thing. I just started using a Roland e kit for live shows and it's very easy to set up, queue in the kit your using and play. Hate to say, acoustic is heavy, loud in the room, but still tbh, it still sounds sooo good and I feel still acts as a natural extension of my limbs as I play it. The issue is for smaller clubs depending on the style of music, acoustic can be offensively loud. I am thinking strongly about hybrid and using this system I think will be amazing. Just wondering about the cymbals, would those still be rubber or could you use those low volume Zildjians and trigger them for example? Anyhow, I would love a video of a deeper dive into this set up but more for rock music, regular kit set up with cymbals.
I just got mine . There awesome been playing for 60 years all stages I can see the potential before I got it
New tech is always exciting but daunting and to some drummers the thought of having to re-learn their instrument or re-learn how to use their instrument is too much.
For me it’s exciting and I would use this product to hybrid my kit; use some triggers on acoustic drums to expand the sonic capabilities of the classic instrument and also use some triggers on mesh heads for completely electronic sounds to enhance my composition. The possibilities look endless and that excites me! (Would definitely be used with my pies though 😅)
I'd use it to practice snare drum rim-shot accuracy whitout disturbing my neighbours. Not even PD140ds can do that for me :(
This could add an interesting twist to my acoustic kit sounds (without any hassle!)
I would use this system for playing at church and for practise. I can see this system working very well with worship music both old hymns and the more modern CCM.
I love my Roland TD50X! It feels close enough to a real drumset and it's fun to play! I could see myself using this new software on my laptop with both my Roland SPD-SX-SE and TD50X. I definitely also want to get Superior Drummer for new drum sounds!
I think I would use these to work on my creativity, try to creat entire songs with it. But I would use it also as a practice tool and most importantly : use it to have fun !!!
I would use it with acoustic drums as an additional fx layer
OH YEAH!!
I want to use one on a gong bass drum for sure!
I am a worship drummer and would love to try introducing alternate sounds and grooves into worship.
I'd combine this with my Yamaha kit to add some non-traditional sounds to the repertoire!
I would spend hours...days...weeks...months...years! doing crazy jams and trying every single sound out possible on this kit, you can't really go wrong with this set.
I'm super hype for this system! Right now, I'm running a mishmash of stuff at the rehearsal studio: an old Pearl Rhythm Traveler converted into an edrum set, hooked up using an Audiofront eDrumIn 4 to a laptop running Slate Drums 5.5 or Superior Drummer 2 in Ableton Live, along with an Alesis Strike Multipad to trigger additional percussion; instead of using electronic cymbal pads, I've got some cheap low volume cymbals and a single overhead mic.
Getting the Strike Multipad into a comfy playing posiition is really tough and because I went with budget-friendly trigger options, playing with a full dynamic range is also tough. This hybrid system from Evans and Sensory Percussion could simplify my rehearsal kit and expand my sound arsenal at the same time. Definitely putting some dough aside to pick it up when I can
Fred "Kickstand" Johnson
I would utilize this as a practice tool. I loved working with my previous electronic kit, to come up with sounds. I moved over to an acoustic kit, and this would be perfection of both workds combined. You can have the smallest kit available, and be able to add more sounds and textures to your playing without all the hardware. I would utilize it to further my education into how to produce the music that I love, and create more content.
Omg, THE Fred Kickstand ??
Umm yes?
Would be fun to explore the possibilities with this. Thanks for all the info
Would probably use this to get extremely confused at the amount of options it opens up, but what a cool piece of kit.
Thanks Drumeo and “Philo”.. good stuff. I think Evans have a great product. I think it needs time in the hands of drummers and two versions.. a easy version with basic setup and editing features. And a pro-version opened fully with all editing parameters. I use Native Instruments and have dabbled with Superior drummer. Having to use a computer does restrict portability and create a risk if something drops out live. Does the unit work without a pc? Evans recently released the low noise heads and silent cymbal range, I think if they nail a cymbal set that’s metal and have the sensory triggering.. It would revolutionize the electronic drumming industry. It’s still missing in the e-drum World.
I would probably play the kit as live solo backing tracks that happen in the moment and evolve while you play bouncing the ideas between the hybrid and my playing 😊
I would use this to expand hip hop based set capabilities!
My brother designs video games and has asked me to provide music for the soundtracks a few times. I would definitely use this system to help with this in the future!
Great tool for creative expression. It does not replace acoustic drums it is a whole new way of expressing rhythm leveraging your existing drumming skills. Polyrhythms using velocity controllers and effects an create some really cool soundscapes. The ability to add modular sequences and velocity filters to tigger notes chord progressions or whatever is pretty cool. My goal using this tool is generating song ideas and just exploring beats, rudiments, grooves with field samples on my own kit designs.
I would LOVE for Drumeo do an explainer on how to connect e-drums, as there are mono, stereo, connectors, cymbals with two connectors, and how do we get three sounds form one Ride cymbal. I asked Alesis how do to this in my DM-10 kit and got NOWHERE.
I would TOTALLY use some triggers with
An aux kick, an aux snare, and a gong drum!!
tl;dr - I'm down to be entered in the contest!! If I received this, I'd use it to experiment to bridge between what e-drums are now & what they could be used for. I want to figure out looping, I want to layer playing from this kind of set-up with a synth, eventually I want to make my own music or cover songs I like from scratch with my own sound. I want to play out (gigs), ultimately, and be able to curate the sound experience I contribute to a band or... be able to do it all between this sensory percussion set and a synthesizer. Or maybe someday I'd stream playing - I'm just learning to play drums now, but I'm hoping to get into more of a rhythm of learning once I change jobs and settle in. (My plan is to start my Drumeo trial real soon; I'm on a timeline currently bc of other things, is all.)
With that out of the way...
Huge misconception: Kyle seems to think folks don't wanna hear him talk about how to use smthg like this (Evans/Sound House sensory percussion) software/platform - I would ABSOLUTELY watch a series on using filters or navigating programs in real time to get what you want out of drums. Through practicing, I'd love to figure out the settings I'd want to be able to change between during a gig. Imagine: imagining what you want and then... being able to get that. If that's the new phase, I'm into it because I've been a bit underwhelmed by the sounds on the Simmons Titan 50, despite it being better than the Donner DED-200 as far as I can tell. One of them is getting sent back, most likely the DED-200. And I'd invest in more software and stuff to hook up to the USB-midi if I could tell what I'd be able to learn how to do (and what that process of learning could be like for me).
Also - idk if everyone realizes that the *content* that enables people to get into the tech in a way that works for them influences the directions that such evolution can happen. Before video content was so readily available, the people determining how music tech would develop were the people in the industry using it, who had access to it and knew what was being done with it, what was possible. Now, providing insight into how ordinary people (from hobbyists (who might even be more accustomed to tech) to various flavors of professional & amateur musicians) can integrate it with what they already do (& like) lowers some of those barriers and creates the potential for so many directions, all of which serve different purposes.
That's why I think Drumeo is really great. I started learning drums bc I **wanted** to learn synthesizers but realized I was missing a large base of knowledge about rhythm and what goes into it, and while I was researching that, I came upon Drumeo. I grew up playing piano (12 years of lessons), yet the physicality of playing drums feels really good to me. So pursuing the combination of getting the sounds I want and moving in a way that feels good for producing that combination and progression of sounds is going to keep me learning the skills that enable me to move in ways that drummers do to hit the way they want to hit, i.e. through Drumeo... and also, the more content in this vein of mastering sound (orchestration? engineering? but for the pairing of drumheads and sounds) will keep me on the line here in tandem with other research I do to flesh out my capabilities as relates to other arenas of music production via tech+instrumentation.
This technology seems interesting, but some examples sounded like a mesh... Too much possibilities maybe... I find more creativity in overcoming the "limitations" in a traditional kit....
Why are all the demos with mesh heads? I havent heard anything useful yet.
You can use both mesh and traditional heads with the Sensory Percussion Sound System, but if you're only using the internal sounds, mesh heads reduce the volume by a ton. We have an incredible performance featuring Omar Hakim over on our channel where he uses both traditional and mesh heads along with Sensory
@@EvansDrumheadsOfficialI've been looking around and I can't find any clips of using this system to replicate a traditional kit in a lower volume environment. I love this new experimental sound but that's only half the use case for me. Anything like that around? I was planning to use the synesthesia mandala drums to do something similar (replicate a traditional kit and provide expressive modern sounds) but their support is sorely lacking so I'm looking at this.
Thank!
I'd try hooking them up to my TD-27 to see what kind of melodies I could create.
shes really great - deserves this exposure !
I would definitely also use this to control synth arpeggios, especially say putting it on the rim of the snare drum...so that would sound SO good!! THIS way, I could control the tempo of the arp, by playing different subdivisions on the rim of the snare!
It's amazing what's technically possible these days. It would be nice to have something like that, you could add cool sounds to the game.
I would love to dive deep into the Evans Hybrid Sensory Percussion! I think it's amazing, innovative, and genius! What would I do with it? I would hopefully make some sick music with it!
This hybrid kit is cool! I just started drumming one year ago (during Domino’s first 30 DD class in 2022) bc my three kiddos (all 13 and under) play drums and guitar (bass and lead). I’m hooked on drums! We would use this kit to compose and create and also are trying to open a studio space we have access to for other local musicians that don’t have space or friendly neighbours. Very curious to see what Drumeo and Philo create together!
To me is looks like a more creative tool and less structured than what we can do with Ableton but you could use both together for the ultimate in creativity.
My brain is not big enough for the Evans Hybrid. But I’m always happy to be proven wrong. Good episode of Drum Department, as usual. Nice to see a female guest drummer this time. Informative and entertaining hosting once again by Kyle and Dave. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love Drumeo.
I work with acoustic drums and electronics a lot, this is a whole new level in that approach! So i would like to see more demonstrations in that combination and yeah definitely with cymbals too ;-) But the sound, parameter and therefore indeed also composing and producing possibilities seem endless and sound very impressive to me. But the pricetag holds me back a bit, i'm not a wealthy musicians unfortunately and damn i watch it way too late for the giveaway. Thanks for the vid, Philo and the Drumeo team !
wow they have Philo??? love The Mars Volta so much!!!!
I would play „bum bum tsack bum stack klirr“ with nice sounds
Very interested to see how these compare to my current V-Drums, as Dave mentions getting samples into place on the more traditional modules is a lot of work, the software looks so much easier for flexibility and experimentation
I would use it to seamlessly transition to and from acoustic to electronic sounds throughout a song.
Sounds very industrial.
However I can see how this can create a different style of drummer.
I don't have the opportunity to play with anyone, and playing drums by myself is sometimes a bit limiting. I'd use these to add some melody and hopefully compose full songs.
Can l use this software with electronic drum pads or does it have to be with acoustic drums with Evan heads?
I currently have a Roland TD27KV kit, and I would love to also add an acoustic kit, but just don’t have the space. The Evans Hybrid setup would let me have the best of both worlds with one kit.
Awesome kit. I'd love to use this for practice.
I would use alot of organic sounds like bamboo, wood, water, birds. I would also try to find a signature sound that can play randomly in place of any head at a low chance. Open handed would make this so wild. You could probably even switch arm styles pretty quick too.
I love industrial sounds and am also a tech nerd, so I would definitely try to utilize this in my training and then bring it to the stage :) Also, thank you so much for that video! I am soon looking for a job after I will have finished my PhD and the creation of new kinds of electronic music equipment like this could be a great thing to do! :) Without this video, I would never have thought about that!!
Really Enjoyed This 👌 Amazing pads and sounds 🥁 awesome demo and interview 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 🤩🤩🤩 🙌
I tend like to play songs that have a 'building theme' to them. I would use this system's ability to programmatically change the sound sample characteristics over the course of the song (e.g. the drum samples start off clean/normal but become warped/decayed/harsher over the course of the song).
I like all the trigger locations on each head. Very cool. Definitely more versatile than traditional ekits and sampling pads - this kit would be a great addition to create a hybrid set. Sooo many options!!
If I were to get this, I would use it to combine the tonal sounds of the acoustic drums (the shells) with the electronic sounds of the Sunhouse software. Additionally, the ability to store different sounds on individual parts of one sound source (positional sensing) would enable me to further create unique sounds that I could use when composing drums for myself and clients.
I'd use it for adding new sounds and effects to my kit. It seems like it has a lot of potential.
This is so cool! I would probably use regular heads and just blend in some of the trigger sounds. The WAY you can do that is amazing: i use to practise drums to a hardware analogue synth with a sequencer, I now think this synth sound can be controlled via a drum trigger.
It would definitely open up a lot of possibilities of samples in my band, even for example to trigger an intro before a show, or before/at the end of a song. Eventually maybe putting some in songs too, but what I'm thinking is sampling my own stuff, and when I play live, I could just bring this if I don't want to bring ALL my cymbals. Like if I need a chinese, I could have it sampled. It seems a lot more simple to carry than cymbals and stands and extra toms, etc, especially if you don't use it in all the songs. It just looks fun to play around anyway!
it would be amazing to use this setup to do a full symphony sounds to enhance the music you are recording.
so basically it "guess" the position of the drum hit using algorithm that's been train with machine learning. It probably can recognize what angle the drum stick hits the surface if they do the training on those too.
interesting.
I guess that trigger is one zone, which would simplified the hardware design quite a lot too.
I have been playing electronic drums for a long time this is definitely the next level in electronic drumming. I have tons of samples that l have created that l have loaded onto my spdsx l would definitely load my samples onto this software and assign it to my pads and create unique songs and patterns that l would never have done otherwise. I like that you can use filter, reverb, delay and other features to modify the sample for endless results. Definitely a game changer thank you drumeo for introducing this to me.
Interesting stuff! I would probably like to use it in more experimental songs if the gig calls for it
I HAD MESH HEADS ON MY DRUMS 15 YEARS AGO. I MISS SOMTHING
Well question is, what could you not do with this thing. Probably would able to create the most insane musical beats there is. Would be worth a try!!
