The individual melodies are solo pieces or intros to songs on their albums both past and future from this recording. They are "3:16", "Eruption", "Cathedral", the intros to "Mean Streets" and "Little Guitars" all joined by Eddie going full Eddie. I had this VHS concert tape as a teen and wore it out in many spots trying to see how he played things. Eddie was one of the greatest.
Epic performance of all his greatest solos wrapped into one still can't believe he's gone , it broke my heart when he passed Eddie has been one of my guitar heroes since I bought the very first Van Halen album when it was released back in February 1978 and I still miss him Everytime I listen to any Van Halen song ❤️😢
You should see the whole concert from which this solo is taken. It is "Live without a net" summer 1986 And you should also see the drum solo which was performance three songs before this one. Love from Italy
Eddie (almost more than anyone else) was that image of the 80's shredding legend that Bill & Ted, and also every teenage guitarist at the time was aspiring to. He pioneered many of these techniques. Most likely every guitarist viewing this video has learned at least a couple of them specifically because of Eddie Van Halen. One of, if not the most influential guitarists of the last 40 years. Revolutionized the way the instrument is played.
I saw this live at rfk stadium with dokken, metallica, kingdome come and scorpions.1987 monsters of rock.He and his brother the drummer are Van Halens. The original with David Lee Roth I saw twice also.
I remember driving around in my first car with Van Halen (and others) blasting through my cassette player…….yes I said cassette lol. 😅 Love your reactions Maddy.
This clip was taken from their video from their video "Van Halen- Live Without A Net" during their 1986 5150 tour. I saw this concert tour back then, and he played the same solo, and even though I was already aware of his abilities, it was still mind blowing to see him do it live.
He would refine and reorder it to perfection over the years, and when I finally got to see them in 1993, it was magic. Damn near the only I remembered leaving the venue that night. Luckily, they recorded a show or two on that tour, producing the “Right Here, Right Now” double live album, and that solo is there in its entirety. Love you Eddie. Missed already.
The band was named after Eddie and his brother Alex, who is the drummer. I got to watch him do this live a couple of times....was amazing. Keep in mind that this was done somewhere in the middle of a two hour concert.
I grew up on Eddie and had the Great Fortune to see him Live 16 times...I cried my eyes out the day he died because he felt not like a Rock Star and the Greatest Guitarist Ever but like your Big Brother who was always cooler than you but would still take you to the parties with him...With the way he put his cigarette behind his low E string to the way he carried himself on stage and his smile...Man that Smile, He always looked like he had the answer to everything but wasnt quite ready to share it with the rest of us mere mortals...
Yeah. Eddie and Alex (his brother) their last name is Van Halen. They were gonna name themselves Genesis but that was already taken. So David Lee Roth, their first singer, had the idea of calling themselves Van Halen. And it stuck. 😁😊
The band is named after them. Eddie and his brother Alex (on drums). Michael Anthony on Bass. Sammy Hagar (their second singer) on vocals and plays a mean guitar himself.
I saw them in 78 opening as the opening band for Black Sabbath. Completely blew me and my friends away...never saw anyone play like that back then and still to this day it's just as astounding
@@mikelundquist4596 I saw them in Hollywood Fla. We left the concert before Sabbath hit the stage. We drove to Peaches, the best record store at that time to buy their record. You're right, they smoked Sabbath. I'd seen Sabbath many time so leaving before they hit the stage wasn't a big deal.
In my opinion, the greatest moment of rock guitar ever captured on film. I must have watched that 5798 times (I still have 'Live Without a Net' on VHS from 1986), and it still blows my mind, every single time....
One of the great nights of my life was seeing Van Halen live and seeing EVH do this extended solo. Many can argue who the greatest guitarist of all time is, but no one can deny he was one of the greatest. RIP EVH.
I seriously hope you continue your Van Halen journey. They are true American Rock Band icons. And Ed, Eddie or Edward, which ever you wish to call him, was an incredible music writer and musician. This guy single handedly influence an entire generation of guitar players after 1978 and will continue to be studied and learned, for centuries to come. They have a rather large musical treasure trove to explore. The David Lee Roth years (1st singer of the band) and the Sammy Hagar years, (2nd singer for VH). Enjoy the exploration.
Okay I'm a little bias because I grew up with these guys in socal. But the way Eddie makes the guitar speak is amazing. He grew up with a classical music background and when the lights go to blue you can tell. He makes the guitar sound like a violin and a cello, it's amazing. Like I said I'm biased but Eddie is the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player that's ever lived. RIP Eddie ❤
Bill and Ted were referenced Eddie Van Halen throughout the first movie. He basically inspired the movie but he didn't do any soundtrack work. He did appear on other movie soundtracks like Twister. He also had a brief sound clip in Back to the Future.
I was lucky enough to grow up with Van Halen. Saw them probably 15 times. Edward & Alex Van Halen were other worldly musicians & talents, as is Sammy Hagar. And I think Michael Anthony is a fantastic Bass Player too. These guys were amazing. Nothing else ever like them. I miss knowing Edward is with us. He, and they... went everywhere with me - my entire Life. I still ride with them.
The first guitar I had was the one like Eddie was playing. Needless to say, I was a huge Eddie Van Halen fan since my youth. He revolutionized the guitar.
That guitar his playing is iconic he built as a teenager in 1976 he took parts from other guitars and built it. He called it 👉Frankenstrat👈 I built one about the same time but i didn't sound that good. I called it 👉 Crap-a-strat 👈 I still have it but have not played in 30 yrs. 😂 I got electrocuted building it. My theory as a 16 year old kid if 12 volt works good then 120 volts would be better. Well it don't. 🤣😂🤣😁
It's named after the brothers in the band, Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Rest in peace Eddie Van Halen. What a true Wonder he was. They were also good though to be fair.
I saw them live back in their Heyday three times but I still love the first one the most. And it was a very small arena in the iconic Century II complex in downtown Wichita on their first album Tour on or around the 4th of July and they were just starting to play songs from their second album. It was so hot and claustrophobic but they rocked so hard and people were shooting off bottle rockets inside there and openly walking around with a fifth of whiskey and other accoutrements, and this was actually comment at the time but they Rock so hard and it some point somebody started shooting Roman candles out and down onto the stage, and David Lee Roth kind of stopped song in the middle of it and openly challenged whoever shot that come down and get his ass personally kicked. And I'm using nice words there compared to what I remember, I was in tenth-grade at most, laugh.
Eddie Van Halen permanently changed guitar playing and in so the course and tapestry of Rock music. He was a true virtuoso and is considered by many the greatest electric guitarist of all time. He was arguably the most innovative. His nay-sayers are sadly simply jealous. Isolating and slowing his guitar tracts exposes the extreme number of individual notes he could play in a second. Not satisfied with ‘off-the-shelf’ guitars he built his own. Les Paul once commented ‘There are only two people who know how to build a (electric) guitar; me and Eddie Van Halen...’ I saw Van Halen in concert several times back-in-the-day. Live and in real time he would play so fast it was impossible to visually follow what he was doing. His hands were just a blur. Gone but never forgotten what a gift to music was Edward Van Halen. He was in a class all by himself and one of one...
Hey, if you want to pause a video for a reaction then that's what you do. People that complain about that can just go see the original video if they don't want any interruptions; there's no room for that kind of complaint in a video purposely made for this. *This is a reaction video* so it's perfectly alright to give your reactions. I'm really glad to see the newer generations giving a listen to the kind of music I grew up with. So far, I've seen a wholly positive experience from new listeners, forming their own opinions & basically ignoring what the current state of entertainment tries to tell them...Heck, when they make something that nearly everyone hates, they blame the audience for not liking the crap they make. Making reaction videos based on a high number of fan suggestions is the best way to let people make up their own dang mind & having freedom of opinion. I've had a long-standing theory (ever since my teens when I heard his solo on their first album, simply titled "Van Halen) on how Eddie could play distinct & individual notes so fast. I came to the conclusion that his fingers have to be going literally super-sonic just to get every note in. Yeah, I'm deliberately exaggerating here, but it's not by much. 😉 One thing you may notice is that Eddie isn't using any foot pedals for modulation or distortion. Back in those days they had no auto-tuners or sequencers, no computer-controlled correction. *What you heard was what they played* & that takes more talent than pretty much any "modern" musician that relies so heavily on electronics just to make something sound "passable." There are exceptions to this general observation but it's very few spread very far apart, mainly on individual songs. Eddie's played like this during his whole career, breaking conventions & continually setting the bar higher, proving that guitar skills have no cap. Another thing you may have noticed is that the audience is nearly dead silent while Eddie's playing & venting their love/excitement during his pauses. They wanted to hear every single note, no matter how high their adrenaline levels. Also, by his gestures & facial expressions with the audience you can see the mutual respect & devotion going back & forth. It's like Eddie was saying, "I've taken the time. I've put in the work. I know what I'm capable of doing. I'm glad that I have this time to show you what that is." From the very first time I heard Eddie play up until this very day (& still going), no matter how many times I listen, he still brings chills along my spine. I'm not a betting man but if I were, I'd wager that the spirits of Eddie's guitars (he built most of his own guitars) went with him to Heaven...Because he certainly played the Hell *out* of them.
One comment said the Eddie rewrote Michael Jackson's "Beat It." We he actually did was play the guitar solo on "Beat It." He did NOT get credit for it, he did not get paid for it. He got a call was asked to play the solo. He showed up at the studio. He had a brief meeting with Michael. Laid down his solo track and was gone in a 1/2 hour. Eddie "WROTE" most if not all the songs for Van Halen and guess what... he couldn't even read music. By the way, the reason he has such a unique sound is that he built that guitar basically from spare parts. It's a stratocaster body and he installed different pick-ups. Don't remember the specifics. Because of this, his guitar is call the "Frankenstrat." He also runs his amps and a lower voltage to get that sound. Very inovative. The genius of Eddie Van Halen. And the band is called Van Halen because Edward, and his brother Alex, founded the band together.
Band was not originally called Van Halen. An it is not called Van Halen because Eddy and Alex started the dand. The name was suggested by David Lee Roth after they found out their band name (Mammoth) they were using was used by another band already.
Great reaction, as usual ;-) The story goes Eddie's critics didn't believe this skill was possible and that the timing was sped up. The technology was not available back then to edit cigarette smoke in videos, so he put a lit cigarette on the neck of the guitar to prove it was played live. Played his guitar as if it were an extension of his body and he could feel every note #RIP
Eddie was so far ahead of his time and the techniques and flashy tricks have inspired so many modern day guitarists. He influenced my guitar playing as well. Crazy Fact; Dimebag Darrell (guitarist of Pantera) was such a fan of Eddie and helped influenced his playing so much that when Dime was assasinated, Eddie put THIS guitar in the coffin and is buried with him.
@@HonRevPTB I admit when I'm wrong, not sure why I thought it was the Red & white stripes but the bumblebee. In all fairness, I had a nasty kidney infection and my brain was in a fog when this was first posted. Thanks Genius 🤣
There is no one that could play the guitar like Eddie Van Halen. Eddie's rythm and timing were unmatched. The genius of Eddie was that he made the guitar sound anything like a guitar. He changed the game, with how the guitar was made and played. There will NEVER be another Eddie Van Halen. Eddie you will never be forgot. RIP Eddie.
The bands original lead singer David Lee Roth suggested that they name the band Van Halen after the two brothers last name. Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Their original name was Mammoth, Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen uses that name today for his current band.
Alex Van Halen (drums) actually had a guitar first and Eddie played drums. However while Eddie was out doing his paper route Alex took over his drum kit and the rest is history!
Keep in mind this is about 2/3 of the way through the show, he still has another 30-45 minutes of concert to play. This "solo" was actually a medley of several of his individual solos from songs as well as a bunch of improv. Also, he used no external FX, this is all done with musicality, mechanics of the guitar and the physics of the sound system (feedback and reverb from amps, monitors and mains).
Interesting note...on their 1978 album "Van Halen", the 1st song is "Runnin' With The Devil" The 2nd track is about a 2 1/2 minute version of Eruption, which leads directly into the 3rd track "You Really Got Me" In this extended live version, you hear bits and pieces of that original (and thats usually when the crowd gets so loud) He also uses some techniques that you can pick out in some of there other songs. Its really fascinating. Check the original and let it run i to the next track!! Rockin'....

Eddie Van Halen was diagnosed w/ cancer around 2000 and a Van Halen reunion w/ Sammy Hagar in 2004 was a disaster after Eddie Van Halen was struggling w/ addictions, a divorce, and was in very bad shape... In 2007, Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen helped Van Halen reunite w/ David Lee Roth to tour (bassist Michael Anthony was not included) ...but only 1 record was released in 2012... Van Halen did their final tour in 2015.
Edward Van Halen could have given us more music in his last decade, but he never did for some reason... His cancer returned by 2017 and he passed away in 2020... (R.I.P.)
Wolfgang Van Halen has recently released solo records as Mammoth WVH w/ him performing all the instruments.
If not already mentioned below...Eddie did the guitar solo on MJ "Beat it" for free !
This live solo never gets old. Heard it a couple hundred times and it just never gets old. Dude was an innovative master!
Yes that's Eddie Van Halen. His brother is Alex the drummer. They switched instruments at some point.
Eddie was a big part of my childhood. Van Halen rocked. And still does.
Eddie took his original Eruption up to other levels here incorporating other pieces of his music into this. Eddie is the G.O.A.T of guitar players! 🎸
nobody before or after has been able to even try to duplicate this master of the strings. Glad you enjoyed your smile says it all!!!
One of the greatest guitarists of all time, could get so many different sounds out of one guitar. A master! Thanks for your reaction.
Not only epic he's KING EDWARD!
You should see the whole concert from which this solo is taken. It is "Live without a net" summer 1986
And you should also see the drum solo which was performance three songs before this one.
Love your reactions Maddy.

This clip was taken from their video from their video "Van Halen- Live Without A Net" during their 1986 5150 tour. I saw this concert tour back then, and he played the same solo, and even though I was already aware of his abilities, it was still mind blowing to see him do it live.
RIP EVH!!!! What a musical maestro
(Alex Van Halen) on Drums and Eddie on Guitar. Band is named after the brothers.
You're right, Eddie was epic! Thanks for reviewing this.
His joy while playing directly gave us joy when watching/listening. Miss ya Eddie ❤
Eddie always had a smile on his face and it was infectious he is such a joy to watch
Came for the reaction, stayed till the end because you are SO DAMNED GORGEOUS!!! 😍
Eddie was only creating the rock and roll guitar. Watched him back in '83 live dude was awesome dude was a master of his craft
Epic guitarist and fortunate to be able to grow up during this era. RIP Eddie!
The band was named after Eddie and his brother Alex, who is the drummer. I got to watch him do this live a couple of times....was amazing. Keep in mind that this was done somewhere in the middle of a two hour concert.
I love the way he mugs for the audience in between these incredible riffs
Right!! Lol
Eddie was spark that I needed to play guitar. I miss him.
Yeah. Eddie and Alex (his brother) their last name is Van Halen. They were gonna name themselves Genesis but that was already taken. So David Lee Roth, their first singer, had the idea of calling themselves Van Halen. And it stuck. 😁😊
Bless this channel oh mighty TH-cam algorithm gods!!!
The band is named after them. Eddie and his brother Alex (on drums). Michael Anthony on Bass. Sammy Hagar (their second singer) on vocals and plays a mean guitar himself.
So cool
...and to believe this was filmed in 86. Wow!! His timing is absolutely impeccable.....the GOAT!!
Everyone loved Eddie Van Halen. Everyone wanted to do the gutair taps. He has that amazing sounds that made van Halen great 😃👍
I saw them in 78 opening as the opening band for Black Sabbath. Completely blew me and my friends away...never saw anyone play like that back then and still to this day it's just as astounding
I saw that tour in San Antonio. Great show. Van Halen smoked Sabbath... and I like Sabbath.
@@mikelundquist4596 I saw them in Hollywood Fla. We left the concert before Sabbath hit the stage. We drove to Peaches, the best record store at that time to buy their record. You're right, they smoked Sabbath. I'd seen Sabbath many time so leaving before they hit the stage wasn't a big deal.
watching Maddy's smile makes it all worth while
They were just playing around. Eddie had some mad legs and did some mad jumpin around in his time.
This is a musical god.I was fortunate to see him a couple times, including this tour. Now he plays for God. RIP Eddie
God I wish I could hear this for the first time again. EVH is a God.
In my opinion, the greatest moment of rock guitar ever captured on film. I must have watched that 5798 times (I still have 'Live Without a Net' on VHS from 1986), and it still blows my mind, every single time....
Ditto. I also have it on DVD. And I still watch it. They were in peak form at that time - and on that night in New Haven, CT. Absolutely unbelievable.
Eddie was god like with that guitar. Saw them live and it was amazing. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I have no idea whether he played it, but your Bill & Ted’s reference was so great!
And the Gods blessed us with Edward Van Halen! Thanks for reacting!
That guitar his playing is iconic he built as a teenager in 1976 he took parts from other guitars and built it. He called it
👉Frankenstrat👈
I built one about the same time but i didn't sound that good. I called it
👉 Crap-a-strat 👈
I still have it but have not played in 30 yrs. 😂 I got electrocuted building it. My theory as a 16 year old kid if 12 volt works good then 120 volts would be better. Well it don't. 🤣😂🤣😁
Ooohh 🩷
this is not the frankenstrat ! this is a Kramer 5150
Mind your own business
@SIR-DanielHunter but he is correct. It was also built by Paul Unkert at kramer along with 2 others.
It's named after the brothers in the band, Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Rest in peace Eddie Van Halen. What a true Wonder he was. They were also good though to be fair.
Love the original version which is only about 1:42 in length. You can hear elements of it spread out over this live version.
You and your reactions are as mesmerizing as Eddie’s talented hands😍😍😍😍😍😍
😊 thanks
Les Paul once commented ‘There are only two people who know how to build a (electric) guitar; me and Eddie Van Halen...’
I saw Van Halen in concert several times back-in-the-day.
One thing you may notice is that Eddie isn't using any foot pedals for modulation or distortion.
I'm glad that I have this time to show you what that is."
From the very first time I heard Eddie play up until this very day (& still going), no matter how many times I listen, he still brings chills along my spine.
I'm not a betting man but if I were, I'd wager that the spirits of Eddie's guitars (he built most of his own guitars) went with him to Heaven...Because he certainly played the Hell *out* of them.
At 5:40, you became an Eddie Van Halen fan!!! Proud to witness that Maddie!!!
Hehe 🤗

With a name like Van Halen rock star just seems right.
You just saw one of the greatest guitar players, sadly he is gone. Rip eddie
So sad
The greatest solo ever filmed period
Great reaction, as usual ;-) The story goes Eddie's critics didn't believe this skill was possible and that the timing was sped up. The technology was not available back then to edit cigarette smoke in videos, so he put a lit cigarette on the neck of the guitar to prove it was played live. Played his guitar as if it were an extension of his body and he could feel every note #RIP
Oh wow!
So true!!
No genius this is not the guitar he put in Dime's casket, he put his yellow and black one in it!!!!!!!
@@HonRevPTB I admit when I'm wrong, not sure why I thought it was the Red & white stripes but the bumblebee. In all fairness, I had a nasty kidney infection and my brain was in a fog when this was first posted. Thanks Genius 🤣
@@johnnyeproductions LMAO, Hope you feel better, take care genius!!! 👍😎😁 🤣
This kinda thing does make me believe Sound made the Pyramids. So magical.
Those were all different parts from like 5 songs pieced together...but the dude is definitely a master
Oooh definitely
He was great!
Agreed
The greatest ever!!!!! Rip Eddie
😞🩷
I was on the front row in salt lake city for this concert it was amazing
There is no one that could play the guitar like Eddie Van Halen. Eddie's rythm and timing were unmatched. The genius of Eddie was that he made the guitar sound anything like a guitar. He changed the game, with how the guitar was made and played. There will NEVER be another Eddie Van Halen. Eddie you will never be forgot. RIP Eddie.
RIP to the guitar God himself "Edward Van Halen"
Eddie's solo here were comprised of different pieces of material of songs from past albums. If that makes sense. 😊
Yes Mandy Eddie and his brother Alex the drummer are vanhalen band is named after there last name 16:36
The bands original lead singer David Lee Roth suggested that they name the band Van Halen after the two brothers last name. Eddie and Alex Van Halen.
Their original name was Mammoth, Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen uses that name today for his current band.
He has played on other people records too. He was in high demand. The guitar solo in Michael Jackson's "beat it" yep that wa s Eddie. R.I.P.
The Bill &Teds excellent adventure song you were thinking of is "Play with me" by Extreme! Love that movie too ❤
Alex Van Halen (drums) actually had a guitar first and Eddie played drums.
Wow
Edward (Eddie) Van Halen one of the greatest guitarist! RIP
Great reaction Maddy!
Think I may start using the link..but you react to some pretty good stuff as it is.
Rockin'....
