    This is the most EPIC guitar solo I have ever seen! Such a technical and exciting performance! Eddie Van Halen was truly an innovator on the guitar!

      at 10:00 he's using delay with really wet repeat/echo for the slapback effect .. and he's using his volume knob (vol. swells) and hitting the notes with just his left hand fingers. They're major chords (1-5-1-3 patterns) every 2 frets (whole tone scale) the song's called Cathedral👍👊

    It is so fun to watch peoples facial expressions as the brain tries to process it all . Eddie was the first at many new things and a true legend and KING of the hammer ons . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and they were SO good ! Just awesome to see younger generations discover this man and his many talents .. RIP Eddie you will be missed Sir ! Great reaction !

    This has become one of the most popular reaction videos since the invention of the reaction video.
    I was a teenager when Eddie Van Halen‘s Euption became the one guitar solo that every kid knew by heart.
    Anyway, I’m here posting to clear things up and help simplify what we are watching .
    First, don’t bother asking a “how” questions - asking any questions is useless .
    The reason is that the answer to any questions whether it be technical or energy comes down to
    “He’s Eddie Van Halen”
    There is no further explanation needed.
    This answers any question that begins with “how “.
    Words cannot describe Eddie just like the style of Jimi Hendrix.
    We all loved Eddie Van Halen and could not stand David Lee Roth because he was coked up out of his mind 24 hours a day.
    When Eddie came down with lung cancer, and that inevitable day came and we heard the news that Eddie Van Halen had passed away, friends called each other to cry together. We loved Eddie. He was so nice and polite and modest. And the girls sure did love Eddie, just like Jim Morrison was admired for his looks.
    As for the audience, being quiet, one thing that should be kept into account is that people in the audience paid $18.50 to see that concert. None of this $1200 Taylor Swift, nonsense - there are no Karen’s screaming be quiet because of the price of the ticket - the audience is not being quiet only to show respect to Eddie Van Halen, but to respect each others enjoyment of the music regardless of the reasonable price for the ticket.
    Back then , when the world was still normal, and everybody wasn’t so sensitive about words, there was a general respect and consideration for those around you enjoying the same artists work.
    Parents brought their kids to all kinds of concerts and not be worried about where they were because everyone including the band would stop what they were doing to find a child. The public policed itself - People were more empathetic and less selfish .
    All that smoke is weed and cigarettes.
    Lastly, I will close with Eddie Van Halen is the only guitarist that looks cool with his cigarette place at the top of the neck guitar. I think it was safe to say that only Eddie could do that and still look cool.
    If you look closely at his guitar, you’ll see that he has many guitar picks attached with Velcro. This is why it’s so cool that he threw picks into the audience to make someone’s night.. like I said, Eddie was a wonderful gentleman and not just a rockstar
    We miss you, Eddie.

    I was 10 yards away standing on the side of the stage during this tour. This kid is no question the most talented musician to play Rock 'n Roll. What a tragic loss at so young. Watch closely kids, see that damn cigarette? If not for that he'd still be playing music with his son. Amazing how many haven't heard or seen this before. His songwriting gets overlooked as does his rhythm playing. I was around for Hendrix et al but there's never going to be another EVH.

    Okay, first. Great reaction 👏. I had the privilege of growing up with these guys. Seen them play before they ever got a record contract or anyone knew who they were. Now, Jimmy was great but sadly gone too soon and Stevie was the best blue's guitarist ever but Eddie is the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player ever! The GOAT! RIP Eddie ❤

    Oh, my dude... I've been listening to them since '78. I STILL listen to them every day. My very first concert was VH in October of '80. 40 feet away from King Edward, and this 17 year old guitar player got the best guitar lesson I've ever received. It's a gift I can never repay. Start with Van Halen debut album, and just push play. Dont stop until the final song on A Different Kind of Truth. And then...move on to Mammoth WVH!     Only a small part of this solo is Eruption......some of it are riffs from different songs, like Mean Streets and Cathedral, and some is just Eddie being Eddie.......RIP Legend.

    I was there !!! I was 15 and my first concert… I remember hearing that section and I was like WTF is that a violin?? I was never the same again and to this day I feel like I got struck by lightning by being there!! 🎸⚡️🎸⚡️🎸⚡️🎸

    I grew up listening to Eddie. My guitar and music idol for sure. He first started with drums and piano. His father was a professional musician as well. Many times we see the percussion in his solos with finger tapping or with his hand side. There is a good interview on You Tube with him for Smithsonian Institute. He talks about his technological and technique advances. Must see!

    I now cry every time I see him play the guitar, his love for it was so great. I will miss his sexy, mischievous smile. Many people won't realise it, but in this piece he also plays something by J.S. Bach. 🥰

    The "twisting" wrist was unique to him. I've seen only a couple guys do it since then. One being Jason Hook who used to be in 5 finger death punch. The other thing where you went "what was that?", was something he did all the time. You hammer on and pull off on one string, and then drag your palm lightly over the strings at the body from bridge to neck or even back and forth. Doing that creates crazy harmonics. Once I learned how to do it, it has been in my arsenal for years.

    This solo started out as a warm up exercise before Van Halen did club gigs,. While recording their debut album it led into "You Really Got Me".Just 1 take to record.Eddie always experimented w/effects & sounds.He added pieces.Never played it the same.From 1978-2015. A smile never left his face

    Great reaction ! Two things that hardly get mentioned about his solos are the free flowing ideas that create a orchestra like master piece (no 2 the same) & the fact usually at this point of the concert he's inebriated performing at that level ! Lol - Another absolutely amazing solo to check out is from Blue Oyster Cult/Veteran of the Psychic Wars (live)

    Hey the very best solo of Eddie's that I have seen yet. I have watched it about one hundred plus times. True masterpiece. Every time it is still refreshing. Seriously. I believe he is using a phase shifter with delay inthe cathedral tune. No, no there will never be another like edward. He literally played twenty four seven. You should check out Distance by Wolfgang . Wolf playes and sings it all. Very talented. I have played for 50 years on the guitar. Eddie is truly the greatest guitarists at what he does in the world!     Yes arpeggios tapping at the end. You tap any note 12 frets from where you are fretting a note and you will get the natural harmonic. So at the end he was holding an E major chord and then tapped each note 12 frets from where he was fretting the notes in the chord. Except for Low E, open B amd open High E were open so he tapped on the 12th fret for those.

    After years of interviews and investigation I finally realized with made Eddie so amazing. He was self taught so he never had a guitar lesson to pigeon hole his guitar playing. He discovered things by trial and error. He created his own style because he didn't have any particular style that he was ever taught. There will never be another Eddie Van Halen. He and his brothers relationship was so strong that now that Eddie is dead Alex doesn't have any desire to play music again and he is selling all of his drum equipment because he says playing without his brother just is no longer enjoyable so he just Simi quit!! Now that is brotherly love!!!!!

    In the transition from Eruption to Cathedral, when he’s plucking the strings above the nut and tapped on the back of the neck he also plucks the springs of the tremolo. He felt every part of the guitar had sound to be used.

    Eddie knew his way around the electric twanger all right
    First saw VH around 1977-ish in Oakland at a “Day on the Green” they were the second of 5 bands that day ( AC/DC we’re the opening act)
    All I remember was the guitarist being really good and the singer yelling something and doing a standing backflip- I said to my friend you just see that dude. 😂😂.
    I had the pleasure of seeing Eruption about a half dozen times over the years, never the same

    Something that I've noticed about this video. They edited a little bit of it out right here at the beginning. If you notice he lays the cigarette down on the stage and then a few seconds later is back on the guitar.

    😊😊 I forget which guitarist, but was one of the greats met up with Ed and Ed asked him to see his guitar. Guy said he expected Ed to sound normal without pedals or efx. But Ed started ripping w guitar alone and made the "brown sound" with jus his fingers! That is highest compliment witj amazing insight. No efx needed, it is all ME!

      Might of been Ted Nugent. I read Ted played Eddie's guitar and rig, but he said he sounded nothing like Ed when he played it and then said you see, it's all in the fingers. That's part of a guitar player's sound. I'm paraphrasing, but it was something like that.

      On the knob part, it feels like he's muting the attack of the notes he's playing, an effect usually done with a volume pedal but since he is free roaming the stage. The result is that @10:50 it sounds as if he is playing a cello.

    7:07 that was a palm muted slide harmonic - is the best description I can give that. I had 'Live Without A Net' on VHS back when it came out.
    The first time I heard "Cathedral," I could've sworn it was a keyboard. 12:26 the beginning riff of 'Mean Street'
    Eddie was constantly chasing the perfect tone. Fun fact: Eddie didn't use distortion pedals at all - in fact he rarely used any effects at all. For the most part, he acquired his signature sound using a mix of a flanger, phaser and a chorus. However, in 1978 on their self-titled debut album his pedalboard included these:
    • MXR Phase 90
    • MXR 117 Flanger
    • MXR 6 Band EQ
    • Maestro Echoplex
    • Univox EC-80A Tape Echo
    • Remote Switches for the Echoplex and Univox

    Its not easy to tell, but this video is actually a composite of two different shows - Aug 26-27, 1986.The audio is entirely from the 27th show. The video, however, is from both the 26th and the 27th. 2:40 Video from the 26th, audio from the 27th - he throws his cigarette to the side, no cigarette in the head stock the next couple of times you see it. 3:00 Audio and video from the 27th - cigarette is magically back in the head stock.

    Eddie van halen was drunk during this tour concert as you could see his eyes being closed 70% of the time... Eddie had 4 or 5 types of cancers, lung cancer and tongue cancer (i forgot the other 2-3) and they had to remove 1/3 of this tongue and he still played like an absolute BEAST

    7:02 “What was that?” He’s just sliding the heel of his palm on his right hand lightly along the strings while doing very strong pull-offs with his left hand, the same three descending notes over and over, and he gets different harmonics as the right hand slides further along the strings. He does a hammer-on on the 3rd fret, does a pull-off to the 2nd fret, and a pull-off to the open string, over and over. Getting harmonics this way you really need to do the hammer-on and pull-offs harder than you normally would because of how much your right hand palm heel inhibits the strings.

    Eddie was also an inventor and has 3 US patents... Your question around 9:44 about a pedal; well not a pedal at all. One of his inventions was a platform to hold the guitar sideways so back at 9:00, he flips it up and watch him reach behind the body and there are switches that change the pickups entirely. The wide black belt around his waist held that platform.

      @tonynascar3 That platform you’re talking about is not on this guitar. He stopped using that long before this tour. I don’t know what you’re seeing, but it isn’t that. That isn’t there. He’s just holding the body up like that for a few seconds with his right hand while he plucks stuff with his left hand. And he’s not flicking any switches on the back of the guitar, because there are no switches anywhere on this guitar. It has nothing but a volume knob and one pickup. He’s just plucking the Floyd Rose springs on the back of the guitar. He spent have a cover plate installed over them.
      To answer his question correctly, the effect in use at this time is just a delay with a relatively long delay time, and just a single repeat. It is set to match the duration of the eighth notes he’s predominantly playing in this section, so when he plays a following note, the preceding note he played is having its single repeat sound at the same time. First line below is what he plays, and the second line is the echo.
      1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8
      -1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8
      Edit: to clarify, with the echo sounding what we hear are eighth notes, but they’re playing in between the fourth notes that he’s playing. The cadence of what we hear matches my numbers shown. Play a note, silence, play a note, silence. And the echo starts with silence, and echo, silence, and echo. And the playing silence and echo silence are opposite each other, and the sounding notes are opposite each other. So playing four notes alternating with silence and four silence/echo pairings results in us hearing eight eighth notes. There are quite a few songs out there by various bands that use this same trick.

    Get into the history of where Eddie describes about how he invented, built his own guitars. There are some videos on utube about his story. Eddie, was way before his time, a visionary, a genius. We who grew up with him absolutely loved him. I seen Eddie about 10 time live in concert. I was at his concert 1978 Anaheim stadium when they parachuted in, wild. That was with Boston, and Black Sabbath. Van Halen literally stole the show, and I have been a big fan ever since! RIP PEACE EDDIE, WE KNOW YOUR ROCKIN IN THE FREE WORLD!

    His rapid picking is called “Tremelo Picking”. There are lots of guitarists who can do fast alternate picking, Ed’s is unique, using the body to keep everything stable.

    Great video. Eddie is not using any pedal effects throughout his solo .This is him playing his guitar and hooked up straight to the amps Eddie was a tone chaser. In the video you will see him using the volume knob to play Cathedral . His does not use any distortion pedals either. I have an EVH Wolgang Special.I am not claiming to be as good as him, but i know what his does on the guitar.Miss him a lot

    If the world ever needs to put forward a solo to defeat someone in a head to head contest I’m putting up this one by EVH! Seriously, I’ve seen dozens of solos from all the so-called greats, Page, Hendrix, Holdsworth, Rhodes, Vai, Satch, et all but NO ONE can get close to the bluesy technical excellence, tone, passion and precision that Edward Van Halen brings. The guy was a MARVEL!

      Yup. But during this solo there is only one effect used, and it is the delay during the Cathedral portion. No effects anywhere else from start to finish.

      @@ClaytonMacleod You can clearly hear the wash of the phase in the live without a net solo. The rate is set at or close to zero and the mix if I had to guess is at around 20-25%. The only thing factual in your statement is there are no distortion or fuzz pedals. In that sense his gain stage and distortion is solely set by the amp. He also used a wet/dry/wet rig so his dry signal probably was just guitar and amp. The wet channels carried the effects chain and were blended in to the whole signal. There are other live videos of the 5150 tour recorded by fans and depending on where they were in relation to the stage the effects are more pronounced because of the wet/dry/wet set up. So yeah I know what a phaser sounds like.

    Eddie van halen. I’ve never heard someone play with so much precision and clarity at high speeds like him, on your question of what FX pedal he was using, it sounded like he was using delay, chorus, and distortion. You should also check out dimebag Darrel of Pantera if you haven’t already, he’s not as good as Eddie, but I think he comes pretty close.

    While this solo is legendary, as a bassist, you should check out Micheal Anthony’s ‘drunk bass solo’ from the same concert. Some of his stuff will leave you scratching your head.
