Personally think it is neither good nor bad, using the nuke on Japan as an example, Japan definitely deserved everything they got, but massacring a population like that isn't good or justifiable either. No point in trying to fight over it imo. There will always be different opinions.

Neither side deserved the deaths they got, except maybe as you said the Japanese higher ups. But as a citizen of a nation what your nation and government do affect the entire population. including innocents. Again, neither sides are justified and yes, many innocent people were killed. But so were Innocent Americans and soldiers at that. Do I think the murders were ok? No. Do I think the nuclear bomb was overkill? Also no. You can't attack the military of one of the worlds if not the world's strongest country at the time and not expect large retaliation. That's my take on things at least. And I don't believe the US deserves punishment either, Japan has commit many war crimes and attacked a nation that wasn't even involved in their war. And also at the time nuclear bombs weren't considered war crimes. So the US' actions at the time weren't even illegal.
