At 53:20 when they're talking about initiative numbers and being secretive that's mostly because the creator of the game Isaac Childres is very anti-alpha gamer where he was worried one player would try to dictate the actions of the others. I'm not sure if it was really necessary since that's more a playgroup problem but when I'm playing with my group we generally give the same amount of information that Cam did where I'll say "I'm going to try to go fast" or "If someone happens to have a heal available I could really use it" or "My plan is to attack this guy here". So long as your group is comfortable with the situation I feel you can be a bit lax with it.
Yeah, in my group we did the same thing. I can't tell you the number of times I said, "I'm going Scoundrel fast" or "I'm going Scoundrel slow." Or the the brute telling us that he was going to attack those guys near him. We don't have an alpha gamer problem though. The Analysis Paralysis problem though...
Oh my gosh freaking Scoundrels man. So many times I'd try to go "fast" with like a 12 and their average speed is something ridiculous like 6. And when they want to be fast? 1s and 2s all day long. Dang Scoundrels acting all like...scoundrels.
We started that way, but we soon found that if you leave it vague, you can lose out. Giving all adjacent allies shield for example or boosting their attacks are less good if someone ends up going faster than you are. We found that actually telling the numbers for important moves leads to less people being annoyed at wasted cards and being more likely to play support cards.
It was so fun to watch you guys play. You played it just like I did a few nights ago. "Bye bye sucker. Oh no! He has shield" and a few other stuff sounded very similar to what you guys went through. Really really enjoyed it :)
One potentially important thing you missed (if anyone at LRR is reading this comment!) - I think the first scenario's prelude was supposed to set the global achievement "City Rule: Militaristic" at the same time as you added the location sticker to the map. Hopefully you can catch this before it becomes relevant!
Since it was done a couple times; Monsters target the closest player by proximitu and will attack them even if the end of their movement puts them next to another character who acted first. Only if multiple characters are equally close by distance of a straight line between the monster and the character do you use initiative to break the tie. Hope that makes sense, fun to see people play a game my friends and I have been enjoying for the past year and a bit.
started trying to watch new gloomhaven and decided i should probably jump back and see whats what with this whole gloomhaven thing. I am 9 min in and love how cam keeps switching the pronunciation of "orchid"
I was sitting at my desk trying not to cry after an awful weekend of having almost a grand stolen at a MtG event but honestly Carl Bogo made it all alright
Ok, as someone who has retired a level 9 Spellweaver, Cam, you want to alpha strike the mooks with your aoe ranged attacks and then be a bit more conservative in the middle until almost every card you put into the lost pile is there. That's when you get them back and go crazy again near the end.
New to this game and I have only played on PC. Tracking everything manually seems pretty daunting after letting the PC manage most of that for me. For a group brand new to the game, I thought y’all did pretty well. Also, a lot of content I have found for Gloomhaven is too fast making it hard for us noobs to learn it. Your videos are also well done with all the different cameras. Might also consider doing sound checks in advance. The guy on the right is quite loud but most others were harder to hear. I’m wondering if one good mic over the table would be better.
Very excited for this. There could be some improvements made to the overlay, like perhaps a card reader/cam? Just so people can see exactly what cards are being played.
... Didn't y'all say at the end of Betrayal that you wanted something to only last like 2 months? This is literally the longest campaign game in existence, with weekly games going years before ending.
There are multiple rules mistakes when the Mindthief takes his first turn. The bottom half of the card of the Mindthief card "The Mind's Weakness" is Attack 1 Wound. It does not let you move. You can forgo the attack to instead Move 2, just as with all cards. There is also a minor mistake in that you have to commit to using an item like the Poison Dagger before you flip the card.
It is a game you learn and get better at as you play but agreed: Every card has a basic attack and move for the top and bottom halfs indicated by the 2 and qualifying symbol, these aren't extra to the main ability but instead of them. Hopefully they see you post and it helps then for next time!
My friends and I played the whole way through gloomhaven and I just found out enemies drop coins on death....We were wondering why there wasn't very much loot
some chests open up storyline and are thus party rewards. others are treasure for one player. The one game I played of it, we made a lot of effort to get chests because we wanted the storyline.
My first character in GloomHaven was the MindThief Vermling! If you go balls to the wall he is fucking powerful! .... kinda glass cannon but stilll....
I wasn't able to watch the whole thing, but I did have it on in the background. You guys did fine for a first playthrough. I thought you were completely boned when I saw your choices on the first turn. This game is pretty unforgiving and especially so with four players where it's easy to have someone singled out if you aren't careful. Not sure why the Spellweaver didn't hop on the chest on the last turn, could have reached it with his Move 4. I would have rated you guys at an A+ had you done that, given that you all achieved your battle goals and farmed some pretty good XP. Given that he had at least one more turn and the Tinkerer was yet to go, I would have given up the attack to guarantee the chest. A couple of tips for future plays. It's generally a good idea to open doors after a long rest and having cleared the current room. It's often a decent idea to open the door, and then run away back into the current room to draw the enemies out. And make sure you look at your X cards and add the good ones now that you have a bit of a handle on the game. I look forward to your future plays. There's a decent amount of people playing Gloomhaven on TH-cam, but your group seems to be one of relatively few that is not Canadian. (Not that there's anything wrong with being Canadian.) Edit: Apparently you are Canadian. One-tenth the population of the US, ten times as many people playing Gloomhaven on TH-cam. One last thing: Painting your miniatures would be great, but if that isn't something you want to do, you should at least paint the bases different colors, or do something else that makes it easier to tell which is which from the overhead shot. It would make the video a little easier to follow.
Your health is better represented by your hand size than you HP, pitching cards to avoid damage is a common occurence, this game revolves around a calculation of how many cards you need to make it the end of the scenario.
LOved the Stream, but one thing is a no go. chewing gum as a presenter, well it just looks bad generally if you do something in front of a camera. Better try to avoid that imo.
"Isn't buy one get one just commerce?" is the funniest thing I've heard on a long time. Thanks, Cameron!

@@Grimwear the way scoundrel is supposed to be played is go super late, then go super early, so you basically get to play two turns in a row
We're still learning here so, be kind.

I think this only happens when you fight against jekserah in the final battle
Been playing one night a week (almost) for (almost) 2 years :P We love the game
That Mitch Hedberg reference always makes me smile. Thanks, Cam! :-)

standing on traps is the Stab Manthrust method of disarming traps
I am once again engaging with the video oh great algorithm overlords
Rewatching because I finally picked up Gloomhaven for myself. Hoping the family will have time to give it a try next week.
Are we not going to talk about how Cam keeps alternating pronunciations? Like almost every other time perfectly.
Loved this peeps, can not wait till session 2 drops. Thanks for hard work paul. Regards
Love the dynamics of the group! Definitely a heavy game.

Dang! Paul was ON POINT with the stat changes on the overlay!

As another person with the same qualifications (retired lvl 9 spellweaver) that is also how I ended up playing nearly every scanario.
Another chapter in The Many Lives of Otaku Jeff
I'm not gonna lie, when I saw this was over 4 hours, I assumed they did two scenarios (or the starter one twice).
Just found this guy's I'm playing this at the moment awesome 😁

Love the game, love LRR. Use Gloomhaven Helper. It will make this so much smoother.
Indeed. I can only echo that suggestion. The app makes bookkeeping so much easier and the pace higher.

Sounds like a nice idea. I'm not previously familiar with this game and it's feeling a bit impenetrable so far.
I don't know this game!
I look forward to learning from the LRR crew.
Less than 8 minutes in and we're already setting up some deep and rich lore! I love it!
Otaku Jeff has returned! I'm back baby! And am a sewer people this time?

@@iandakariann That's a bit of an understatement. It's more "Start it your freshman year, you might get it done before graduation."

Paul mentioned the axe gang but misassociated them to be from Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master II, when they are in fact from Kung Fu Hustle!
Yaaaas. Super enjoyed this game with my friends. Curious to see your builds (cheese or silly?) and decisions. And oh boy you're in for a long haul.

Yes yes yes yes I've been waiting for this. It's time to duellll. Imagine a bunch of exclamation marks here except it's broken on my laptop. Have fun.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here you go.
Orchids
Star trek rules first person to pronounce it sets the pronunciation for everyone else!
Orchids
gg boys and girls
just means the coin values are just the "quality" of gold. so the 1s are just 1st tier chocolate.
Is it just me or could that last move not have ended on the chest and the spellweaver just miscounted a move of 3 instead of 4?
Kinda digging this. Thanks for uploading. Are you all still playing?

Why are they using blessings and curses in the deck
Adam's playing Sasukes back story lol

Poor Cam, losing a sneeze can be very annoying :(
Vicious foul beefs!
Adam using both the movement as well as the bottom panels ability every time.
Oof.
Also pleeease keeep playing and not just stop after 4 episodes
I like it
Cam with that Mitch Hedberg deep cut
Dude, whose job was it to teach the rules here? Adam is so obviously lost and Cori is so dismissive of any questions.
Buy one get one? Isn't that just buying something? Americans are strange.
