Your very clear explanation of the context of Isaiah 7.14 may raise a question regarding Matthew's credibility. Since Isaiah's prophecy, taken in context, had to do with the contemporary political situation in ancient Judah, Israel, and Syria, what right did Matthew have to apply it to the Lord in Mt 1.23? A reasonable person could regard Matthew's application of Isaiah 7.14 as unwarranted and fanciful. Yet we believe that Matthew wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that the birth of Jesus Christ -- and not the birth of some earlier child -- actually fulfilled Isaiah 7.14. A video explaining why we should continue to believe Matthew's gospel even though Isaiah 7.14, read in context, seems to refer to a child born centuries before Jesus, might be helpful.
Mr. Jones, we passed along your comments to Dan, but we did want you to know that he and Jed will be discussing more in depth the concept of a prophecy being fulfilled in their conversation next week. They plan to discuss several passages, but Isaiah 7 will be one of them.
@R. Grant Jones although this man's video presentation seemed to be with good intent..unfortunately he's simply wrong in his explanation. There are two children in mind because there are two prophecies; not one. The first clue is verse 3 of Isaiah 7. Isaiah is instructed to bring his son with him to meet Ahaz. God through Isaiah initially tells Ahaz to ask a sign, and Ahaz refuses. God then looks beyond Ahaz the individual..and addresses the House of David with the plural.. verse 13, "Hear ye now, O house of David;" which the King James Version picks up on perfectly, representing the plural of Hebrew. The Davidic throne is in jeopardy, for the confederacy of Syria and Israel sought to remove Ahaz from his throne (threatening the Davidic lineage of the throne of Judah). See verses 5-7. So the FIRST prophecy is regarding the Davidic throne's security and 14-15 is about the future Messiah, as Messiah will come during a time of oppression. Verse 16, is now the second prophecy which pertains to the child that is Isaiah's son that is with him (Shearjashub) as he talks to Ahaz...this prophecy deals with the more immediate threat and how God will resolve it. Verse 16 returns to the singular "thou" focusing back on Ahaz. Embedded? Most definitely. But in plain sight God had TWO messages of comfort for the grand future of the Davidic throne (preserved even when future kings would cease to exist and Judah would be led into captivity..Messianic hope would remain) and also dealing with the immediate worries of the reigning Ahaz and promising a removal of this confederacy.

@@subversivereality3908The New Testament writers speak of Jesus as being the Messiah or future king of Israel even though his name is never mentioned once in prophecy of the Hebrew Bible. Yet we are warned not to add to the Word of God lest we be reproved and found to be liars (Proverbs 30:6). In another place, it is said that not speaking according to the law and testimony of the prophets would reveal one's spiritual state of darkness. For example, ... Thank you, dear brother ! I have been reminded of the following, which can be seen as a point, supporting this perspective, you've shared with us here. Although it hasn't been prophesied unto Jonah ahead, YESHUA though still does refer to that actual event , of Jonah being on the inside of the great sea creature, as to a prophetic sign in HIS generation. An actual past event becomes a prophetic sign, with a significance for the future and an actual fulfilment in the death and the resurrection of YESHUA. Who can see another, more fitting, parallel example from Scripture, than the one I've suggested here ? Shalom to you all!
You read the wrong translation, read the original Hebrew translation of Isaiah 7:14. The original says , "The young woman is with child, and is about to give birth to a son, and she will him Immanuel " Matthew seems to mistranslate the verse and its meaning is completely different , most notably the original is in present tense.
ShearJashub means “a remnant will return”. In the setting of Isaiah and his family, it is a sign that even when God’s people were carried away by their enemies because of sin, a few would return. The other sons of Isaiah were Immanuel (God is with us) and Mahershalalhashbaz (Swift is the booty, speedy is the prey) both of which were also messages about trusting God and the defeat and captivity to come. - Dan
Isaiah’s wife was not a virgin when she gave birth to Immanuel. What was the reason that the New Testament Apostles made to assert that Mary had to be virgin?
Because she was a virgin and this prophecy is to the line of David to preserve it threw war. There are 2 sons with 2 different names. And before the child should know to chose the good n reject the evil their troubles shall be over. It's a promise thell be ok
Emmanuel IS NOT Isaiah's son! There are 2 sons with 2 names n characteristics. No man can say they're God with us. oh what's his name? He's God with us . No!
In II Kings 15-16, it becomes clear that this prophecy was fulfilled contemporaneously, when both kings, Pekah and Retsin, were assassinated. It is clear from the context of Isaiah’s seventh chapter that the child born in Isaiah 7:14 is not Jesus or any future virgin birth. Rather, it is referring to the divine protection that King Ahaz and his people would enjoy during the Syro-Ephraimite War. This is where the Christian response of a dual prophecy comes in. Missionaries attempt to explain away this stunning problem of Matthew’s complete indifference to the biblical context of Isaiah 7:14 by claiming that Isaiah’s words to Ahaz had two different applications. They concede that the first application of Isaiah’s prophecy must have been addressed to Ahaz and his immediate crisis. That child that was born contemporaneously, and the first leg of this dual prophesy was fulfilled at the time of Ahaz, 2,700 years ago. Missionaries insist, remarkably, that the second leg of this dual prophecy applied to Jesus’ virgin birth 2,000 years ago. Using this elaborate explanation, Christian apologists maintain that Matthew’s use of Isaiah 7:14 is entirely appropriate. In short, these Christians claim that Isaiah’s prophecy was fulfilled twice: The first, in 732 B.C.E., and a second time in the year 1 C.E. Problem solved? The self-inflicted problems spawned by this adventurous dual-fulfillment explanation are staggering. The notion of a dual prophecy was fashioned without any Biblical foundation. Nowhere in the seventh chapter of Isaiah does the text indicate or even hint of a second fulfillment. ((I once heard a missionary try to explain away the problem of the unbiblical nature of a dual prophecy by claiming that in the seventh chapter of Isaiah, the prophet addressed himself to King Ahaz in both the singular “you” and the plural “you.” (Although in the English language no such distinction exists, in the Hebrew language “you” can be expressed in both the singular and the plural.) If the seventh chapter of Isaiah contains a dual prophecy, at what age did the baby Jesus mature? Which were the two kingdoms identified by the prophet Isaiah that were abandoned during Jesus’ lifetime? Who, during the first century C.E., “dreaded” the Kingdom of Israel when there had not been a Northern Kingdom of Israel in existence for 700 years? When did Jesus eat cream and honey? Does this biblical somersault make any sense? This argument is devoid of reason because this wild assertion of a dual prophecy was born out of a hopeless attempt to explain away Matthew’s transparent mistranslation of the Jewish Scriptures.
