I'm American. I've lived in different parts of America for 30+ years and I'll have to say this video is misleading.
Most Americans definitely say "sweets" to generalize anything sweet like candy, cake or ice cream.
Saying "Do you like sweets" is perfectly fine. It's not old fashioned or awkward at all.

米国滞在です。なるほど参考になります。さらに付け足すと、日本では「甘いものが好き」とか「甘党」といった言い方（表現）が一般的ですが、アメリカ人はそうした言い方をあまりしないと思います。したがって、アーサーさんが言うように「甘いもの」というカテゴリーが存在しないのではないかと。ではどう表現するかというと、I love tiramisu とか、I really like chocolate icecreamとか、単に甘いものではなく、より具体的に言うことが多いように思います。
英語と日本語を使った字幕がとてもわかりやすい。バイリンガル翻訳とでも言うのかな？とてもわかりやすいです。

Interesting cause in Canada, we use “sweets” like Brits even though we don’t say “lift” “take away” or “chips”. For those words, we take the American English.

在米４０年ですが、アメリカではSweetsと言います。
英会話上達には細かい事（正しい、正しくない）は気にせずに、とにかくアメリカ人と会話をすることですね。

Well, how about “dessert “?
翻訳ミスがあります。非常に頻繁に誤訳をされる表現なので「また誤った翻訳をしている」と思いました。
2:00 で"More than three legs" を「３つ以上の脚」とありますがこれは「4つ以上」が正しい訳ですよ。
この”more than 3”の英語の文では３は含まれず、次の数字（この場合は４）からの数を指しています。しかし日本語の「以上」という言葉はその数字も含みますから、逆に「３以上」を英語で表すと”more than two" が正確な英語になります。
ビデオのイラストでもちゃんと正しく４本脚（more than three=4つ以上）が出ていましたよね、"... more than three legs" と聴いた瞬間に私の脳内では「４つ以上の脚」が浮かびましたが、画面の和訳が「3本脚以上」となっていたので残念でした。これでは三角のテーブルも含まれることになりますから。
30年以上も前にアメリカの育児書を和訳したた。書籍を購入して読んでいたところ、同じ例文に出くわしたことがあって「子供が２人以上が一緒に遊ぶのはトラブルが起きやすい（１対１で遊ぶというのに意味をなさない）」、と訳されていましたが、原文の英語ではきっと「more than two」のはず、つまり正確には「３人以上」と翻訳すべきのところを誤訳したのだろうと結論づけました。育児経験からしても３人以上が同時に遊ぶのはトラブルが起きやすい（１対２の構図になると力関係の不均衡が生じるため）というのが明らかだったので。出版社に指摘することはしませんでしたがそれ以降ずっと引っかかっていたことを思い出したため、今日はこの点をぜひ指摘したいと思った次第です。

私が米国で働いていた最初の日、同僚からキャンディーどうぞと言われて、チョコバー貰いました。分かりやすい説明ありがとうございました！レジで食品買うときにはバッグいる？って言われたり、ガソリンスタンドでの支払いで郵便番号ジップコードを聞かれたり、イメージがすぐに結びつかないと、戸惑いますよね。。最初は戸惑ってばかりで今思えば楽しい新鮮な日々でした😽

I think sweets are non-specific and would use it when I want something sweet but don't know what. If I knew what I want (cake, ice cream, candies), I'd probably state the item I want.

「甘いものが好きです」という場合、具体的には、固いお菓子より、チョコレートもそうですが、ケーキやお饅頭もイメージします。
Candyというとどうしてもアーサーさんが例にあげたものをイメージするため、
ケーキお饅頭をcandyと呼ぶのに違和感があります。それらをcandyに含めて大丈夫ですか？
どう答えれば良いのか分からなくなり、しょうがないので複数あげます。

The title in Japanese should read "アメリカ英語", not just "英語", because "sweets" is the word generally used in British English as you mention in your video. I don't think "Candy" strikes the right chord in the Japanese mentality to mean something sweet as in "何か甘い物でも食べようか?". This is a good example of an English word that encourages you to shed some cultural light on it.

The word “sweets” is not an old fashioned word. You are entitled with your opinion, but do not mislead Japanese with candy, sweet pastry and so on. Just like Japanese word 「甘い物」Sweets are sweets, sweets can be anything all of the above, period‼️ If I want something sweet I simply say just that, but if I know what I want exactly I’d say Chocolate, Cinnamon roll, hard or soft candy, cheese cake and etc …..

甘いものって一口に言っても、人工的なsugarを使ったものと天然の甘みがあるもの(フルーツ etc.)がある。もっと言うと、ミルクプディングとか、日本で言ったら焼き芋も該当するだろう。どういう甘いものなのか相手に具体的に伝えないといけないシーン、シチュエーションもあるだろう。デザート(dessert)も、BrEとArEでは意味が少し違う。BrEでは、人工的なsugarを使っていないものを指す。

ちょっとミスリーディングですね。アーサーが言いたい事もわかるのですが、アメリカでsweetsと言ったらデザートのようなイメージでしょうか。デザートというと食後のイメージですが例えばバフェみたいな場所に並んでいるケーキ類などいわゆる「甘いもの」はそのままsweetsとアメリカ人は呼んでいます。アメリカ在住37年です(北カリフォルニア29年と中西部8年)

hmmm.....this video might be right but my experience is different. I got married with an American girl and we have 2 8 years old boys now. We are living in Osaka, Japan. We are using English 80% at home. but "sweets" for お菓子 or something after lunch/dinner is so common to us including my relatives living in the US. Its really difficult to understand cultural stuff like this because Ive never lived in the US or other countries from Japan. Anyway, "sweets" for something sweets seems perfectly fine to me.
I use 'sweets' as well as 'confectionery'. How else would you call a confectionery company?

When I hear the word "pastries", I'd imagine flaky, layered, pie-ish things---just like chocolate croissants. Pastries don't include something like cinnamon rolls, do they? What I'm trying to say is that cinnamon rolls have completely different textures. They are not flaky, layered, and pie-ish.
When I heard the word "kashi pan", the first thing came up in my mind was a "melon pan". I don't think that you'd call that a pastry, would you? If I categorize "melon pans", cinnamon rolls, and so forth as sweet rolls, would that be OK? Or is the word "pastries" still better? Thank you in advance.

Interesting👍 I experienced several similar examples at English conversation classes when I learned it. It might be a good method teaching more practical English phrases following with some real situations. I agree with you.
As a first generation Japanese American who’s been living in the states for most of my life, the Americans do call 甘いもの sweets, though. Such as “I love sweets, I have such a sweet tooth.”., etc. As for the wagashi, I’d call Japanese confectionery. I don’t know if this is the East Coast thing where I live. America is so big that depends on where you live, we have different ways to call things, like sofa/couch (長椅子)brown bag/ sack(紙袋) or Soda/ pop (炭酸入りソーダ),
Lollipop/sucker (棒のついた飴)etc. Just my two cents here.
Actually we don't say 炭酸入りソーダ in Japanese. We simply say either 炭酸 (tansan, which is the word directly translated from the German "Kohlensäure") or ソーダ (soda). Alternatively, 炭酸入り飲料 (beverage with carbonic acid), or better still 炭酸飲料 (carbonated beverage) can be found on NHK's national broadcasts, though. In British English it's usually fizzy drinks. Also in British English, “I love sweets" is considered lower class, whilst U (= upper class) English users would say "I like desserts."

私の場合は「甘いものを食べに行こう」など、行動が前提の場合はのケーキやシュークリームとかパフェとか、あん蜜とか饅頭とかかなあ。飴やチョコレートなどは指さないですね。
一方仕事中に「あー、甘いもの欲しい！」という場合は大抵手軽に食べれる飴やチョコレート、甘めのコーヒーとか（ソーダを含んで、日本語的に）ジュース。
単語や言葉の意味って総合的な状況によって変わりますよね。だからなおさら、伝わるのが重要、文法とかではない！というのはすごくよくわかります！！

Hi Arthur, I'm a huge fan of your channel! I've got a very question here. How do you say チョコレートパフェor おしゃれなパンケーキ with lots of whipped cream on it, something you eat at a fancy cafe in the middle of the afternoon? Desserts don't sound right to me because they are something you eat after the main part of a meal.
Actually I would call that a dessert because normally you have them for dessert.
But a pancake is more like a breakfast food.

カナダに住んでいますが皆さん普通にsweetsと言っています。sugary stuffとかsomething sweetとかも言うと思いますし、甘いパン系であればpastryも聞きますが、sweets自体が間違いというのはないかなと個人的には思います。Candyというとchocolateを想像しますが、若い人はあまり使わないイメージです。
以前カナダに20年住んでいました。カナダ英語は聴いた感じではアメリカ英語ですが語彙や綴りはイギリス英語の流れですからね。このビデオを見てカナダ人のネイティブに聞いたら「sweets」を普通に使うと言ってましたね。

Yeah, you're right. The stress should be on the second syllable, "ga", in the case of "wagashi". An easy error for a foreign learner to make in the Japanese language.
Have you seen or heard of candy bars❓ They aren't chocolate bars like Hershy's. Their ingredients aren't only chocolate but all kinds of items, such as caramel, coconut, nuts, raisin, etc. Popular candy bars in the US are Almond Joy, Butterfinger, Crunch, KitKat, MilkyWay, Musketeers, Reeses, Snickers, and Twix. My favorite is Snickers. If you visit America someday, you should try them❣They're very sweet all right❗ 😊

pastry は焼き菓子の日本語訳だったから、クッキーとかの類だと思ってました。
日本人がパンが食べたいったら自動的に菓子パンの意味になるなんて事はあり得ない。朝食はご飯とパンどっちにすると聞かれれば、普通食パンやトーストの意味になる。
I am Japanese and live in NY for 20 years. Hitting someone with a bread is definitely a part of Japanese Owarai culture, but it is offensive in the US. Is it funny to you two? At 6:35, I hear a kid giggle. It's a mess in education.

We DO say "sweets" here in US. Young and old, all across difference races and backgrounds. アメリカ人は甘い物を通常”sweets”と言いますよ。全く変ではないですよ〜。ただし、"I like sweets"や"Do you like sweets?"はSNS等では性的なニュアンスのスラングになる時もありますので気をつけないといけません。
