As someone who loves the technology and loved my Valentine One Gen 1 before I sold it I am very excited for Gen 2. However as someone who is becoming more mature about my spending I don't see this being so much better than my 360c that it justifies buying. To not have a GPS chip at this point and to still have to rely on a phone for, what at this point is basic functionality is a deal breaker. I love the Valentine company but I honestly expected more. I can't stress enough how quiet my 360c is now that it has learned my everyday routes. A part of me still wants to buy this but I just rationally can't from a practical since.

The 360c is a great detector. I put it in my wife’s car after installing the netradar DSP to my ALP. I honestly kind of miss the 360c. It was quiet to BSM and had great range.

I had my V1Gen 2 for a week now and my Uniden R7 for 2 weeks but I am still testing them both extensively. The V1 Gen 2 has a much better quality built outer case however the double small suction cups are very weak and they fall easily. The R7 has one heck of suction cup, very strong but the way it slides into the detector doesn't feel very secure. The outer case of the R7 is a little disappointing, it looks like cheap plastic. I know they probably used ABS plastic but it feels cheap and there is no comparison to the magnesium Valentine case. Displays wise, the Valentine is very simplistic but very clear and subtle, I wished it came with a screen but I am OK with how it looks, I purchased it mainly for the directional arrows and the range but I also have the V1 connection on y phone so I am satisfied. The R7 screen is a master piece, it is so cool, so modern, so customizable and far above and beyond what you would expect of a radar detector. I came from two passport Escorts 9500IX that I purchased new back in May 2009 and the R7 looks like a space ship compared to the 9500IX. As far is performance, I already put in just over 10 days probably about 250 dedicated miles to haunt for radars and lasers. I went on side roads, access roads, hays, interstates HWYs and city driving looking for sources(HWY patrol, Sheriff, Police, stationary radars, speed traps and State troopers) and both radars (R7 and V1 Gen 2 are equally impressive), compared to the 9500IX they seem to have a little better range but where they shine is on the rear antennas and the ability to give you the band and frequency. I want to say special thanks to this guy from Vortex Radar because he is a beast of information source, he is a formidable person. ** Small update as of Jan 3 2021. It is very obvious that Valentine 1 lacked on research and development on basic stuff like the mounting mechanism. The radar falls off all the time on the provided dual small suction cups, they should have offered what Escort or Uniden offers which is a big 2.5" single strong mount. Another thing that I must criticize is the lack of a bag or carrying box. ***Update on 7 January 2021, Valentine keeps falling from the windshield with the provided hardware. TERRIBLE DESIGN!!!! I can't say this enough, this is a clear disadvantage.

      @El_Diablo_LI 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I never have that issue with my V1 G2?
I'm a long time V1 user and have found you need clean the window really well with alcohol first and then use a little water on the suction cups and you'll likely never see an issue like you're claiming.
I'm not saying you aren't having an issue, but if you take the steps I've taken, you can virtually eliminate the issues.
Or you can install a blend mount on your rear view mirror.
It's another mounting option that is out there if you're having major issues with the mounting hardware.

Nice started comparison, but I think once you have your tests done, it’ll be better.
That said, we need a quick min/mid/max volume comparison between the gen1 and gen2 Valentines. I have a feeling the volume range both muted and normal alert ranges is much lower than the V1G1, which would not always be a good thing. I know it’s basic and probably low on the list, but for people like me who live by the original V1 capabilities, that’s more important on the new hardware than benchmarks. The original V1 has not let me down yet, except for low power I/O one time so hoping the G2 will address that, so in all honesty, I know the G2 won’t be worse in terms of detection capabilities. Alert audibility is much more important. Please consider doing a quick video on that.

Too much K band junk noise and Laser Guns[NJ] in New Jersey and PA. Valentine 1 gen2 has more than enough K and KA long range warnings against police and then as a BONUS awesome BSM and Laser Sensitivity! I had it for a week and it has been great! I drove down from Route 1 at 2 in the morning from Newark airport, New Jersey to Pennsylvania. Wow I was hit with KA twice, Hit with Laser once [had picked up early reflection pulse hits from 2 cars in front of me in North Brunswick NJ], then Ka again then a K band hit once I was in Pennsylvania. In Alabama the state police switched to K band due to all the false positives radar detectors get so they have a better chance detecting speeders since their radar guns can blend in with other car sensors. Pretty smart if ya ask me.

@@alihashimi9017 Well, I've been keeping track of it since it was first announced, and they plan to use machine learning to identify signals. There will be no false positives because Theia will be trained to alert on all the legitimate stuff. So, k band filter will be gone, and gps false alert lock outs will be a thing of the past as well. The tech was demonstrated this past year at Sema, and looks extremely promising. It isn't just the software, because Theia will have some of the best hardware to compliment the software. From what I understand it will be the most expensive windshield radar, and I have my fist full of money in the air saying "Take my money!" :) lol Because I want one. I've been running the V1G1 for quite some time with impressive results. However, it does false more often in the past year. Not sure if I jumped the gun, but I went ahead and ordered the V1G2 for the extended range, filtering, *stealth, and more simplistic interface. There are no red-light cameras in my area, but I do travel to the Phoenix valley about once a month, where the R7 would be marginally more useful. I don't plan to use my iPhone to interface with the V1G2 because I suspect that it may grow long in the tooth rather quickly. It's kinda' like the self-parking feature in my car; too finicky to mess with but who knows.
*Why is stealth important to me? Human nature: I was driving on I8 westbound over the Cleveland mountain range. Along comes a tricked-out low-pro CHP. The freeway was nearly empty; just us two. He cloaked me for 3-miles at 65mph and if he was more than 55-feet behind me, I would be surprised. He knew I had an RD and that seemed to irritate him. Seemingly, he was diligently looking for me to do something wrong. I would just soon not attract any attention if I can help it. Sure he could visually see it in my window, but he did creep up on me from a distance.

Sure every detector has pros and cons so there's not one choice that's best for everyone in every situation. In general I recommend the R7 for most people, especially now that you can find it so cheap, but if you need the V1's features then of course that'd be the way to go.

I'm in between the Uniden R7, the Valentine V1 Gen 2, and the Escort Max 360. If you had to pick one for a noobie in the radar detector world which would you recommend? In overall functionality and usability. I don't mind so much the false alerts as long as it works with its a true alert. I hope you can help looking to purchase this evening.

I've run 3 different radar detectors. A shitty Cobra, The V1 G1, and the V1 G2. The V1 G1 was amazing, and never let me down. The range was amazing too. That being said, the blutooth compatibility of the G2 is a game changer... especially when combined with Highway Radar, Waze, or like apps.
The G2 is the best radar detector I've owned. My Girlfriend and I find it amazing when we get a 'Ka' alert from over a two miles away. We thought it was a false alarm, but as we approached the top of a hill in the distance, sure enough there was a state trooper sitting at the top and shooting into the valley.
If you don't have the money for the G2, the G1 is still an amazing detector!

  • @JerryPena

IMO the V1Gen2 is behind the R7. To compete with the R7, you need to pair your phone. Take away from your (phone calls, Waze, battery, other apps) that you may use while driving or parked. If I want red-light cameras, speed cameras, etc. I need to use Waze, but get I'm already running the JBV1. I'm also an iPhone guy, so I will need to purchase an Android and tether it to my iPhone for data so it takes to the V1Gen2. Also, if I don't use a phone, I need to purchase Savvy to get speed tracking. A GPS chip costs manufacture less than $1.40 to put in these radars. He had all this time admit he needed to put this in the new product and didn't.
I know Mike has put out GPS PR before on how it's not necessary, but we live in a connected world now. If it wasn't for an enthusiast, we wouldn't have an app too begin with. I think Mike should admit to how GPS chips can help his product move forward, just like he knew using Bluetooth was beneficial to the product. Why wait all these years, and put out a similar product, when RD nowadays give you (OLED screens, GPS, MRCD, Red light cameras, etc..). I know there are V1 fanboys that will want to bash this comment and the V1Gen2 is a good product, but it needs crutches (phone, app, android, savvy) to hold its own!
@Vortex Radar, it clearly shows (13:05) how you're holding yourself back from comparing both these products as the R7 just beats it in every front except the RDD Immunity. You state the R7 pro features (13:49) but then you state the pro features of the V1Gen2 (14:00), any edge it has over the R7 is when paired with a phone. Again, I'm not bashing the V1Gen2, but it's a product that is a little too late to introduce in this market.

Great video. I’m really looking forward to results of further tests. I have used the same V1 G1 for nearly 20yrs. I realise that there has been s/w upgrades, but, generally my detector continues to perform brilliantly but has a high level of false alerts and doesn’t have any GPS. Also, my version of the V1 G1 doesn’t pair to my iPhone. I’m pretty sure my V1 G1 is a pre Bluetooth version. So I am interested in the improved detection performance, Bluetooth connectivity, GPS capability in the new V1 G2. 'What I’m really interested to know is, if the V1 G2 Bluetooth connectivity can work with the GPS features in a car’s infotainment system that has maps and navigation which includes the location of red light cameras or fixed speed cameras? (These details are stored on the GPS Map SD Card in the infotainment system.) BTW the camera location information is updated by the infotainment manufacturer regularly by downloading a new map info file to the SD card. This would be an excellent alternative to pairing the detector to a mobile phone, but, would still provide the driver with essential camera information. What do you think?

Here’s a question for you, Vortex. Apologies in advance if you’ve already answered this one. I’ve been watching your videos for a few days and settled on the R7. I was about to buy when the thought struck me: “Are Radar detectors worth it with the increasing use of LIDAR?” As someone who can’t afford a good set of laser jammers I’m thinking of just abandoning ship and not buying anything. Looks like you live in the Seattle area. I’m from Spokane which I’m sure you’re familiar with. Do you know how frequent the use of LIDAR is in our state? Is there anyway to tell what the local police are using? Been driving for two years now and I’ve only ever SEEN* one officer on I-90 East sticking his LIDAR gun out the door. What do you think? If I’m gonna buy a Radar detector would I also need to get laser jammers to have peace of mind? Thanks. Sidenote: appreciate your dedication and passion for these devices and am thankful for your unbiased opinion. You’re the one who talked me out of the escort 360 and into the R7 just by delivering the facts. Thanks in advance

Since RD’s aren’t helpful for laser, you can run Waze to help get alerted to when officers are using it up ahead. They have to be stationary when using laser, unlike radar, so Waze can be very helpful in conjunction with your RD. :) Go Hawks!

The whole point about getting a long-range signal with police clocking someone else to get you the alert is the key to radars. And that is a good point you made. I’m considering finally upgrading my over a decade old passport 8500x50 to the r7. I will be mirror tapping for power in my lexus Rx 350, which has one of those big boxes with electronic devices under the mirror. . I would like to use a mirror mount for the r7, but I’m concerned because I have already have a Thinkware f800 pro dash cam in the middle of the windshield right beneath the box that houses the electronics and it must remain there. So, the front lens of the R7 would have the “obstacle” of the dash cam in front of it. Should I not worry about it? Common sense says it would be bad for the units front to have something in front of it, but I’m not 100% sure of just how much the blockage would be a hinderance to its performance. Should I just have to forgo the mirror mount all together and locate the radar detector somewhere else on the windshield and still use the mirror tap? Or can I get away with it? Thanks!!!

I love the GPS lockout and the screens are so much more in this century, i can't believe the Valentine 1 still hasn't updated to full writing on it like every other detector. No GPS is crazy at that price point, wow. I love running Waze on my phone to get a head's up if cops are ahead or wrecks are there, I don't want to run an app just to use my V1, sorry, R7 all day long.
