I've been following Rita's channel for months and, ironically, this quick convo made me realize I'm definitely a Sapphire. I love rules and structure and being extra. I love going above and beyond what's required and I'm inviting the world to see my drip. Also, Ellie your hair looks fabulous! Love the color, the cut and the body!

As a fellow Moonstone I definitely relate to the getting hung up on rules but I absolutely LOVE a theme! I love how it's my own version of storytelling even though no-one may ever "get it" or understand the nods I'm making to an event or theme, it doesn't matter, it excites me and makes me enjoy dressing.

I love the idea of this system but have a very hard time placing myself. I definitely think my style is about communication, I communicate how I’m feeling and my personality through my style but it is important to me that people get an accurate representation of me through my style.

I’m obviously not Rita so not the expert, but I’ve been following her channel for a while and it sounds to me like you could potentially be Left+Up/Amethyst? Since you’re focused on yourself first and foremost (rather than external factors, within reason) but you also want to make sure your clothes reflect that sense of self and other people get the message.

I just recently found Rita's channel and am thrilled you just made this video and actually chatted with her.
I had started to struggle with my wardrobe quite a while ago which was the main reason for me to dive deeper into Kibbe, Kitchener and SCA which lead me to your channel a while ago. But honestly, trying to perfectly match the recommendations for my Kibbe ID and my Kitchener essences while honoring my own coloring yet matching my own aesthetic felt almost impossible. I then found the channel Silkymochi which includes even astrology into the mix and also talks a lot about dark aesthetics. She once said she as a dark winter sometimes would love to have the look a light spring (which I am) can have when wearing dark colors, especially black. The edgy vibe that gives off would be something she could never achieve wearing black because it looks at home on her. That rang a bell for me already. I love that vibe, that aesthetic, I don't really vibe with the radiant and fresh vibe I give off when I wear my own colors and I never really seem to be able to make my own colors go with my Kibbe ID and my Kitchener essences and feel like myself. I just CAN'T match my own aesthetic with that combination. I come off totally differently when I try and I just don't feel right. Even in the darkest clothes of my own color palette, I feel off. I can see that they look lovely against my coloring, but it's almost like not recognizing myself anymore. And allowing myself to actually acknowledge that and accepting it, was a rough step to take for some reason.
When I then found Rita's channel it suddenly felt like it made perfect sense. I resonate most with the Ruby style key and ever since I watched her videos, I feel like dressing for myself has never been more easy. I now can easily use your system as well because my aesthetics make perfect sense in combination with that Ruby style key. I can also combine both with my Kibbe ID and my essence blend with ease. It's crazy to me because I always thought the missing link was knowing my actual seasonal color palette, but that was never the case. I mean, of course, whenever I don't feel like wearing any make up, I wear my own colors and just go about my day. But those are typically the days I just don't feel like doing anything and need lots of comfort and REALLY don't care about what I look like. Wearing my colors does avoid people asking "Are you okay?", when I wear no make up though, which is a question I really don't wanna hear when I am in "that" mood. So it's a way of avoidance in that case. And it works. So knowing my SCP isn't useless at all. But I rarely wear no make up, I have a specific make up routine that I use on a daily basis that I can go through in about 10 minutes easily. So I don't even think about it anymore, I just "put my face on" quickly and don't need to care about it until I take it all off again. It's not that I hate my bare face, not at all, but I really like that specific make up look on myself and it perfectly goes with the aesthetic, style and vibe I prefer for myself. It's my type of accessory since I don't really wear much jewelry. And my hair is also some sort of accessory for me. Both add a bit of easy edge to my look without taking much effort or time. And honestly when I don't feel like wearing color, I will just stand in front of my wardrobe for ages and stare at all the pieces in my color season and feel repelled by it.
On top of that: I don't really enjoy looking very feminine anyways. Androgynous looks are my favorite. I love wearing men's clothes and really enjoy breaking the rules anyways. I just didn't allow myself to dive deeper into that realm for whatever reason. I don't know why I felt the urge to push myself into liking how I feel in typical feminine looks. Don't get me wrong: I like how I look in feminine outfits and styles. I like how I look wearing a long haired, tousled wig, and softly blended make up, all my perfect silhouettes and lines and the correct colors, but I feel SO WRONG following those aesthetics. I mean, if I would ever model again or act in a movie (which I don't think would happen anyways, but just "if") I would easily know how to style myself for whatever role, so it's fun to know all that and use it as a tool, but I really am not that person.
What I figured out by now: I like myself in both FN and D lines, but I love D make up more on my face. I prefer darker neutrals and dark colors, picking an outfit a day before wearing it doesn't work for me because I will ultimately question it when I put it on because it will not feel right anymore that day. Just picking everything on the go works best for me. And if I truly allow myself to listen to what feels right in that moment, it works out perfectly fine and doesn't take much time at all.
In your system moon and stone are the most prominent roots and most important for me to follow, the third one can vary and depends on my mood and how I feel that day (so I won't pressure myself into settling for a specific third root anymore).
About Kitchener: I vibe the most with Natural Dramatic and Gamine essence. I am not 100% sure that these actually ARE my essences, but they make the most sense to me in terms of how I prefer to dress, so I allow myself to do so. Following rules doesn't make much sense to me. I don't really care about what other people think about the way I look like, I just wanna be me and feel like myself. And if that means not perfectly following "the rules", I am - by now - totally fine with that.
I once was 100% sure about having Kibbe width, but now I am not too sure anymore. Due to my height I can only be either DC, FN, SD or D, I have no Kibbe curve though, so SD is eliminated already. I feel like classic lines aren't really doing me much favor, so I would say DC is out as well. So I really only have FN and D left anyways. I am not sure if I have width, not too sure if I have sharpness. But both silhouettes don't look wrong on me imho. So today I just told myself that I am allowed to like both and wear both. And that felt freeing.
All these systems are fascinating and have their own way of teaching us wonderful things about ourselves if we let them. But we are the ones who decide how much of each system we wanna adopt into our way to dress and style ourselves. And besides that: we are the ones to decide how we want to look like. On retrospec I am very happy that I chose to try it all out, just to see what it does for me and how I feel following the recommendations given by each system. It lead me to allowing myself to unapologetically dress for myself and do it my way.

Funny, this system strongly reminds me of the decision making cognitive functions (from Jung or MBTI). Left would be associated with feeling and right with thinking, whereas up would be associated with extroversion and down with introversion (in this system extroversion and introversion just means being outward focused or inward focused).
This means top right would be extroverted thinking (Te) which matches the strategic, responding to the external world in a way that makes sense vibe. Bottom right would be introverted thinking (Ti) which is all about figuring out a system of style rules that makes sense to you. Bottom left is introverted feeling (Fi) which is all about being true to your inner feelings and what you value without outside influence. Top left would then be extroverted feeling (Fe) which probably matches the least, but I suppose focusing on how your style expression is perceived by others in a more intuitive way is very Fe.

@@latinaalma1947 In the myers-briggs system you have both an extroverted decision making function and an introverted decision making function. They are just in different places in the cognitive function stack. Basically, the lower one is more stressful / used in higher stress situations.

Am I the only person that does not understand Rita’s system at all? What does ‘elemental’ mean in terms of style? How would you identify being ‘connected to yourself physically and emotionally’ from a piece of clothing? I just can’t see any consistency in the information / style / wording within each quadrant, how the heck I would begin to identify which quadrant someone was in just from the clothing they’ve chosen, or how knowing which quadrant I fit into would help me with my own clothes. But I must be the only person who feels this way as I know Rita has lots of fans and followers!

I feel you but the logic behind it honestly benefited me in how I process putting together my daily outfits but also in how I think about design as a whole. I follow Rita but I have interpreted the system in my own way. I found it more difficult to conceptualise the left and right keywords.
I highly recommend her “Essence Keywords” video. She attaches examples on what it looks like. It’s the ones uploaded on November 2023.
I actually prefer her “Style Key Overview” and “Style Key Logic 101” videos more helpful than the essence keywords ones. Here she explains your internal landscape (e.g. how you want feel in your clothes, the vibe you want to communicate, your personality, your emotions, thoughts, comfort level, etc.) and external landscapes (e.g. personal context/circumstances, weather in your area, lifestyle needs, external inspirations, etc). She discusses that the intention and the direction of how you dress-ie. from internal to external, internal to internal, external to internal and external to external-defines your outfit decision-making process. We all use every single style logic but Rita says that having a preferred style logic can offer clarity and satisfaction for people who are overwhelmed and unhappy with how they approach their personal style.
A fun fact about Rita is that she’s also a sociologist and so she thinks about individual style in relation to society. What I like about the system is that it’s highly context-dependent. Fashion trends vary in different places and the trends cycle very quickly so what is considered “left” to me may as well be “right” to someone else. It really depends on the expectations on how to dress in your area. Her keywords are just a guide and she emphasises that they’re not rigid terms nor are the examples she uses. In fact, she encourages her viewers to create their own style keywords/dictionaries.
Honestly, it’s a less prescriptive typing system so I understand why it’s more difficult to place yourself in (I was used to Kibbe and PCA). But once you understand the concept and what it’s for, I think it’s intuitive and it makes the outfit-making process easier, quicker and more fun!

I find this whole personal style world fascinating. I am a natural creative and I think being a fashion designer/interior designer would come naturally and most often people ask if I am an artist/model/fashion designer because of how I look and what I wear but the funny thing is, is that I literally roll out of bed and throw things on - I am a Ruby based on watching this video as well as a heavy Earth with a touch of Mushroom and Stone. I wear the same few pieces, which has comfort front and center, but in a variety of colours (in the soft/true autumn palette which is unintentional but true to me). Based on the one video you did I feel like I am a combo of mellow autumn and gamine autumn which sometimes, outside of wearing a more muted monochromatic or colorblock outfit that is totally relaxed, I can end up wearing statement pieces usually in the form of jackets because I love unique, vintage pieces to layer with. I am soft dramatic/dramatic essence also and probably don’t do my body type justice but again, definitely dress for myself and for comfort.
I love this content cause it shows how every body is different but also how everyone expresses themselves differently for different reasons. I find it all so intriguing because for us women and the fashion/clothing industry, we can feel insecure and struggle with body image but in reality we are all so unique proportions and shape wise and what not but then on a deeper personal level - we are also so complex and what we wear definitely is an expression to something much deeper.

@@7773CLA It came off as much more of an attack than I meant it. I just don't think any of Kim's clothes have conveyed that being comfortable is the goal. There's nothing wrong with how she dresses, her look has just always had a specific aesthetic and goal that doesn't scream comfortable or relaxed. Billy Eilish also dresses in an over the top attention-getting way but her clothes are often baggy, loose and oversized--things that do make me think "comfortable." All celebrities are going to cultivate a brand and dress for some kind of attention, so it's probably hard to use any celebrity as an example of personal style that we can follow or relate to, especially because they also have stylists helping them.

You need to watch Rita’s videos! The 4 quadrants don’t line up along aesthetics, they line up along motivational (?kind of?) things. There are through-lines of aesthetic qualities that people share inside quadrants (or along each axis), but inside each quadrant you’ll have a really wide variety of aesthetics, tastes, and choices. And “being comfortable” is not the goal for Rubys/Left Down, it’s a goal that most people share. But what is “comfortable” might change in meaning, and how each key figures out what’s comfortable for them is different. It’s part of the “style logic”. Ruby’s are led by the physical sensation of the body, and how their own outfits make them feel emotionally and psychologically as well. Their style choices are best inspired by who they are, who they want to be, their state of mind, separate from the exterior context of where and when they are dressing. I dress NOTHING like Kim K, but we are both Ruby Key. One thing we still have in common is that we sometimes feel almost underdressed for an event? Like we can’t help dressing in a type of signature outfit (or almost a uniform) in a way that looks different from others around us, in a plain or neutral aesthetic that’s almost minimal. She favors stretchy garments that move, and hugging super tight silhouettes… the term “body con” to mean a very tight or clingy silhouette comes literally from “body-conscious”… her style decisions are first led by how the clothes feel on her body and make her feel physically and psychologically.
Also keep in mind that the 4 style keys are 4 quadrants on an axis, and because of that, a Ruby like Kim could he near the top or the right of the Ruby quadrant, and could be CLOSER to people technically in other keys like the Right Up (Sapphire) or Left Up (Amethyst) than she is from people in her own quadrant who are way way down or way way left…she may have more in common with those other people in some ways, but she’s in the spot she is (more down than up, more left than right) because of what motivations and logics will work best for her or that she employs at this time in her life to result in the look and feel she wants to create.

I'm glad to see this colab, you're both amazing. I like being cute and a bit fancy, but not necessarily follow trends. I have been told I have "grandma taste" for clothing, both in a good sense (because my grandma is quite stylish) and in a bad sense (in a "that's way too outdated the heck are you doing" way) 😂
    I thought I was a moonstone, forget it, I'm a ruby 😅

The most effective way to stop hating your wardrobe is to get rid of extra fat on the waistline. You really don’t hate your wardrobe, you hate the extra fat that makes you deformed, especially if it’s placed on your waistline.

Well, this was confusing especially the left right dimension. The verbage used was a little contradictory especially on the right. I feel like it could be a lot simpler since it's supposed to be a simple system. Like
    left - right : comfortable/freeform - refined/structured;
    up - down: extravagant/showy - simple/moderate.
I mean I don't think of dreamy or whimsical and refined together but at the same time they could apply to both sides if I have correctly interpreted what they said about it.
(I took too long to write this comment. Shout out to my dusty dictionary because I'm forgetting words and how to spell them😞)

My challenge is to create synthesis between my Kibbe DC (Kitchener classic/natural/ethereal/ingenue) limitations and ruby style key. I might have to learn to sew as it is an intersection that is hard to shop for. Lol. Imagine my difficulty once I figure out my stlyle roots. 😂

I was so excited to see that you two were going to make a video together ! Rita is such a warm, wonderful person, and her Style Key, along with your Style Roots, have been the most instrumental things in my style journey. Moreso than Kibbe & colour analysis for sure (probably bc I'm a L+U / Amethyst, so the more vibes/personality based "rules" are much more for me than the stricter systems). I'd be so interested to see if certain style roots pop up more in certain quadrants than others ! I can see Moon appearing much more on the Left, and Mountain & Mushroom on the Right. Stone for Down maybe

I think your style roots system and this key really interact with each other for you. Your style system is quite inward looking, like a moonstone would be.
It had also just occurred to me that it's funny it took you a while to figure out that earth is one of your roots when you literally named your system after something that's found in the earth 😅

I agree. I just can’t get my head around Rita’s system, and it feels like a lot of words that don’t say anything to me. The fact that the majority of people align with Sapphire or Moonstone suggest it’s not a particularly balanced ‘system’
But it does seem to resonate with others, so good for them I guess?!

This is an intriguing concept. However, I am having trouble connecting with it and applying it to myself. I just don't get it. The descriptors and pictures provided aren't helpful to figure out where I fit. All of the examples just look high fashion to me. This seems like an incomplete explanation. Elle-Jean, your style roots are somewhat helpful--a little more than this system. But this Style Key system is just incoherent.
