  • Personal trainer Kai Simon, demonstrates how to do a dumbbell woodchop or wood chopper. A wood chop is a great functional exercise for the core and specifically your obliques. Wood chop mechanics mimic a rotational swing which makes it an ideal exercise for athletes training for sports like baseball, tennis, and golf.
    Try this dumbbell wood chop exercise and share this video for someone looking for athletic exercises for core strength.

    This is a very nice video but I'm sorry to tell that this isn't the correct way to do the woodchopper. The focus of this exercise lies in the obliques yet you are not actually using them. The exercise consists out of 3 movements: a twist, a squat and a pulldown with straight arms so analyse how the muscles in those exercises work and then you will figure out where you went wrong.
    Greetings

    • @Reizermo
      @Reizermo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm no PT, but I was thinking the exact same thing. She doesn't look to be engaging the obliques with that constant twisting and pivoting into the rotation.

    sILLY GIRL! THIS MOVEMENT IS dangerous. compress spine & no abs.
    just look at the pressure... it in ON the spine. D/B WORK IN OPPOSITION TO GRAVITY. to make it an ab movement must hang horizontal . maybe off the hyperextension rack.

    pff it's about the obliques. if you move your entire body like that, you haven't acomplished shit

    • @Arkhs
      @Arkhs 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not so sure about that, given that the main function of the obliques are core stabilisation.

    • @MaxSpider2000
      @MaxSpider2000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +James Martin well James, my point is that in order toactivate the obliques you have to keep your pelvis into place and only rotate the upper part of the body from that point. you can get a better contaction if you do the move at an angle like the girl in the video but keep in mind not to move from hips down. there you have it.

    • @trebor229
      @trebor229 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, i was thinking the same thing.. In this video she pretty much just moves the entire oblique in stead of contracting it.. i'm sure the exercise is good for something.. but it's not isolating the obliques..

    • @mojo44441
      @mojo44441 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now, that was WELL said Mr. Spider and hopefully she will learn from this as well.

  • @KarenleeFitness
    @KarenleeFitness 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Good explanation but not the right form. You got to keep your arms straightened with elbows locked at all times and not pivot is needed. The foot just needs to be pointed out with the direction you are rotating as not to hurt your knees. Keep the body straight is key as this provides a resistance as you rotate your torso that targets obliques. Hope it helps.

    • @diasporaman5419
      @diasporaman5419 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you guys are idiots for trying to correct her that fact that she plants the heel before the pivot giving you stability prior to the twist is where the Oblique is hit.....fitness is a sphere folks Gtfoh with your condescending comments she obviously is doing something right just look at her.

    • @wonton4262
      @wonton4262 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main point of the core is to Stabilize your body by generation counter-rotational force. It's NOT an active muscle itself that moves things around like your arm. As you rotate your pelvis, you want to keep your upper body IN LINE with your pelvis and leg, thus preventing it from creating involuntary movement. Now, exercises such as band or cable rotation does require you to hold your lower body fixed, but the woodchop is not that kind of exercise. Furthermore, it really does not matter whether you straighten or bend your arm. When you straighten your arm, the center of mass is further away from you, thus making the exercise more difficult. However, same level of difficulty can be achieved via simply adding more weights while still having bent arms, and having straight arms can be very taxing on some people who have weaker shoulders.
