- Nicky Sadler follows the Ledbury Hunt, hunting within the law, in its Friday country, near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. Hounds are known to have hunted the area around Ledbury on the Hereford and Gloucestershire border for at least 300 years. The Ledbury Hunt as presently constituted can trace it's origin to 1846 when according to the original minute book it was decided to set up the hunt 'on a respectable footing' and a committee was formed. A huntsman was engaged to hunt 14 couples of hounds, five days a fortnight. In 1868 Kennels were built adjacent to the Ledbury Railway Station where they remained until 1938 when the present site at Bromesberrow was established. Nicky talks to masters, staff and followers including David Redvers, one of the foxhunting supporters who stormed the House of Commons in the run up to the hunting ban. I have ridden to hounds in the past, before work/travel commitments made horse ownership impractical. I'm on the verge of owning horses again after a 20 year hiatus, but I have a bit of a problem. You probably know all about the incident with the now-defunct South Herefordshire a few years ago, in which the huntsman was caught on video at the kennels feeding a live fox cub to hounds, and was subsequently prosecuted for his trouble. So this is a genuine question which I hope can be answered in the same spirit: is this (or was it, before the ban) a normal practice, as part of the "familiarisation" process for young hounds?
Thanks for this. Good question. I reckon no - hunting is changing. But lots of 'cruelty' takes place in the name of food production and fieldsports, so it depends how high you put your bar. Even with the South Herefordshire case in mind, I think you should give up buying leather shoes and eating fish and chips before you give up hunting. / Charlie

It is obvious that the majority of these Antis are people who have empty, meaningless lives and they think that impinging on others rights is serving some high purpose, such as a class war with people in the countryside. Foxhunting has been illegal since 2005, immaterial as to whether it is done on private land or not. Anyone engaging in such activities should be prosecuted. End of story..

A repeal of the hunting act is unlikely, given the number of anti-hunting MP's in Parliament. According to Conservatives Against Foxhunting, this includes at least 80 Tories. From someone who agrees that foxes are a pest when it comes to lambs and chickens, ground nesting birds etc, they should also be controlled humanely. I commend the sabs for monitoring and preventing, as best they can, the barbaric method on this video. Wicked people using the excuse of tradition.

Actually Nicky Sadler is mistaken. The hounds can't be controlled and they will chase and kill foxes if let loose. If mandatory custodial sentences were the risk for any land owner flouting the law this so called 'hunting within the law' would stop immediately. The hunting fraternity know they can't control the hounds and land-owners wouldn't risk it. The police must uphold the law of the land. Of course all criminals think the law is wrong and doesn't apply to them.

Foxes are not innocent. They murder lambs (eat them alive) as they are being born. Tell me what you think to re-wilding? They want to reintroduce lynx and wolves to cull foxes and deer. Is that cruel?
