I lost my mum in June this year and this is one of the things left we both enjoyed watching together. Reminded us both of mum buying them new for me. Also she thought Kevin is hilarious which he is. So thanks for those last memories Marty.
As an ex RAF MTD (driver) who used to drive the 80’s version of this which was the Leyland AEC 7500gal tanker at RAF Brize Norton I really enjoyed this repaint.
what kind of fuel was it using for its own engine? I have a suspicion it was running on Diesel, so that was the jerry can for (just to answer Marty's querry about that particular detail)
I have one of these trucks but in a much larger scale. The RAF blue/grey is BS381c-633 and car paint suppliers can make you a spray can up. I needed 30% satin gloss. My project was for a pair of British locos using this paint colour.
So, I'm 60 now. I used to live north of Chicago, Ill. I would walk home from school each day, there was a shop, I would stop and buy an occasional matchbox car or plane. This was around 1970.
Love watching these makeovers, very addictive watching the process and seeing the final reveal, I'm similar vintage to you and grew up loving Matchbox cars and have since bought a few of my favourite pieces that I enjoyed as a kid, and your right, you don't realize the detail of the models. Love the humour!!
Moin (G'day) from the North Sea shore. Well... I have to say, NO restoration is "boring".... 😜 Each one is a challenge and the Tanker Truck is a beautiful model. (8:01 - 8:10) That's what I like about the MBs.... That abundance of detail 🤩 I saw this three-axle truck "live" once. When I was a truckie, I once delivered a load to the RAF. There was a truck like this in the yard of this airfield. (Perfectly restored) Somehow your model reminds me of that day 😉 (It's just as excellently restored). Marty, I'm thrilled, clearly both thumbs up for this 👍🏼 👍🏼 Thank you so much for sharing 🙏🏼 (and the memories of my truckie days) To you, Julie and all the team behind the scene have another bonza week and stay safe and sound. Keep up the good work, mate 😁 Greetings from the DCcoB at the lighthouse end of the Elbe River. 😎👍🏼🇦🇺🍻🇩🇪👍🏼🤠 (P.S. Shoutout to Australia's most koalafied ambassador, KEVIN 🐨)
Nice video Marty. Beautiful model. You are correct about the pollution caused by manufacturing and then later disposing of electric car batteries. Once they have been produced by the millions, I hope an efficient methods are developed.
I've got one at home along with about twenty other vehicles. They belonged to my cousins before me, my cousins are now aged 76 and 72. It is covered with purple watercolour paint so this will help me repaint it.
I've noticed modern Matchbox cars are far better detailed than these vintage models. I expect Matchbox had to really step up their game with competition from Hot Wheels, Johnny Lightning and Greenlight.
Amazing to think that you can take a battered old toy from the 1950's and make it into something far far superior to the Matchbox stuff of today. Bravo Marty!!!
Another great restoration Marty, I have lived in country Victoria my whole life. It was until I was a school that I realised you could drink town supply in some places. We always drank tank water. 😅😅
If you have an old fashioned bread knife with the rounded tip, they make a good tool for creasing card - as they thin, they are easy to run along the ruler's edge. And agree - inside crease is best.
Marty, - I use the decal sofener to put decal sign and whatever on brick building for my train set. It worked really great for me. Made it look as those it was painted by an HO figure.
The small 'Jerry can' (Which got its name from being a modification of a German design in WW2!) would be for diesel for the truck. The tank would carry aviation spirit ('Avgas') for planes. Diesels can't use it. Jet and Turbojet engines burn Kerosene, which the tanker may also carry. Incidentally, Avgas still contains lead additives. The original tanker was based on a Leyland Hippo 6x4 chassis.
I have never played with the original matchbox cars but i did spend a good time playing with little cars similar to the tesla one BUT those had a weird metal body (idk which metal) and a weak plastic base. The wheels were made of plastic and axles from metal. Those cars were significantly smaller than the tesla ones, but were darn smooth. One of the cars i had was a race car and i kid you not- it was LIGHTNING SPEED. I always loved the "tin" cars, as you said they had that strudy feel to them.
Congratulations on getting your public toilets upgraded!. You have come along way from a bucket and open window to the street below!😂. Thank you marty🤗
Thanks Marty, your channel is a great distraction to the normal mundane reality of life. Your Matchboxes, look great. Please keep putting out the restoration videos. Oh, as a kid, I would save up, ride my bike to C. Foster's Toys in Hinsdale Illinois, and buy Matchboxes. The new ones, as you pointed out, are no where near the quality they once were. Thank You.
Thanks again Marty for this fantastic makeover. It's been 11 years now since I was "down under" in the Blue Mountains. I missed those birds singing, lovely to hear them again❤
This is Dave Seitz. I do very many reenactor boxes, sheets and the like and I dent the paper first and then cut one side only. Then the other side because it makes it so much easier to cut. Have fun like always.
You undersold this big time. It was in not terrible shape to start. The fact you didn't open it up tells me it didn't have 50+ years of detritus inside it. But this looked lovely from the get go and you left it in wonderful shape. Fascinating the view and opinion on a current Matchbox model. Doesn't surprise me it's disappointing. But I'm left wondering if someone 50 years from now will be restoring a 2023 Tesla Matchbox model and highlighting their 3d printing capability and decal production means.
Once the caustic soda solution has cooled down to ca 40C, you can toss the wheels - and if applicable - other plastic parts in it. This works especially well, if there is paint on them. This will save you a lot of hassle with soapy water and brushes and you'll never need to mess about with brake fluid again.
I would have put one more drop of blue to bring it back a bit but, I can picture those side by side & see shade differences like any example. As far as boring,... not so. It is your work along with your narration backed by that wonderful music that is very nostalgic for earlier times & posts. I love the subject matter of RAF refueling truck. Love your yard & surroundings also. I got crows, ravens & blue jays around here. Restaurant Portion Cups are what you are putting paint in. What they are called here in Maine. I like the Poly Strip the best. No splotchy crap. You could just attach shelf brackets to that diorama & mount it on the wall. Very nice by the way. An odd surprise.
Now this is the way to finish up a Second Monday ( what passes for Tuesday around here ) Thank you for the extra cool video and restoration, Mr. Marty.
This is a very interesting model. I love it. The two holes are to hook up pipe hoses for fueling. The jerry can I’d for filling a car or small plane that does not need the big pressure tank.
Always great to get a new video from you, Marty! Personally, I don't find this RAF Tanker to be boring at all. Quite the opposite, actually. There's not a lot too it as it's an early model, but that's also a great deal of the charm of it too! I didn't know that the black wheels version was worth so much! I have a gray, plastic wheels version just like this one, but now I'll keep my eyes peeled for one with black wheels!
Very interesting to see your workbench lighting setup for filming. I'm just setting up my workbench for doing videos so this was very useful. The video was very interesting too, cheers.
Marty: As the caustic soda (aka sodium hydroxide, or lye) dissolves in the water there is a chemical reaction that creates heat. A word of warning: Don’t put caustic soda on aluminum. It reacts quickly. Greatly enjoy your restorations!
As usual, great and fun video. Read that you are getting some of the Texas heat there. This the 4th day under 100 f ..in a row here...stay cool and safe...captjack...
Complimenti per l’ottimo lavoro! Ti seguo ormai da diverso tempo e adoro vedere i tuoi video. Mi hai dato l’ispirazione per restaurare i mie modèllini con cui giocavo quando ero bambino.
Ah - so good to see you again Marty! Been watching since the Pandemic started in 2021 - seeing you every week has meant so much to me - Sending you love from Dallas, Texas, USA 🙂
I lost my mum in June this year and this is one of the things left we both enjoyed watching together. Reminded us both of mum buying them new for me. Also she thought Kevin is hilarious which he is. So thanks for those last memories Marty.
Im not crying. There are onions..
Sometimes the simple models are the most satisfying to restore.
Shout out for Julie; what WOULD you do without her?
I still like reading the SUN headlines in your paint booth
Marty… the world is a better place with you back and making TH-cam videos.
always love the tiny details they put in the old matchbox models.
As an ex RAF MTD (driver) who used to drive the 80’s version of this which was the Leyland AEC 7500gal tanker at RAF Brize Norton I really enjoyed this repaint.

That toy Tesla had as much character and appeal as a normal Tesla....I'd say they got it spot on. Combustion engine all day for me.
I'm a simple man; I see Marty upload? I click

Could I Suggest that you use a large furnace filter in front of your fan, it will save it's life for years to come.
Nothing like putting a big bullseye decal on top of a military refueling vehicle🤣🤣
Can't beat a little bird-song first thing early morning!!
So, I'm 60 now. I used to live north of Chicago, Ill. I would walk home from school each day, there was a shop, I would stop and buy an occasional matchbox car or plane. This was around 1970.
Marty, congratulations, you are a magician
Perfect lunch break treat. Thanks
Way to go Julie!!!! The brains of the outfit!!! Without her there would be no video today!!!!!

Those boxes the models came in-who knew when you were a kid that you should have saved them!
That paint color match is gorgeous.
Sat having a coffee and sandwich for lunch and marty pops up with another make over 👌, think you got the colour about right there
Another match box master piece.
Thanks Marty for sharing this video
Didn't think modern matchbox cars came in the boxes still

Thanks Marty, turned out lovely.
Thats a lovely brick of a truck.
Nice video Marty. Beautiful model. You are correct about the pollution caused by manufacturing and then later disposing of electric car batteries. Once they have been produced by the millions, I hope an efficient methods are developed.
Looks great Marty, keep a look out for 1/76 Airfix model kits cause you'll definitely get some good decals then.
I've got one at home along with about twenty other vehicles. They belonged to my cousins before me, my cousins are now aged 76 and 72. It is covered with purple watercolour paint so this will help me repaint it.
My introduction to Match Box toys was from a childhood friend whose father would buy him Match Box toys when he was on a business trip.
Comparing old and new Matchbox cars is like comparing old and new real cars. Thanks again Marty for this wonderful video!
I've noticed modern Matchbox cars are far better detailed than these vintage models. I expect Matchbox had to really step up their game with competition from Hot Wheels, Johnny Lightning and Greenlight.
@@lancerevell5979 Matchbox has been owned by the same toy company as Hot Wheels (Mattel) since 1997.
Wow, Matchboxes in boxes! They sell them in the states in blister packs.
I remember that one! Lovely Marty. We need a model of you next to it at RAF Coltishall, you aren't quite old enough to be a period accessory.
Brilliant job Marty 👍 thank you for sharing 🤗🙏
You did a great job restoring the fuel tanker.
Hi Marty it's been almost two years that I have watch a make over great restoration greetings from south Africa
Amazing to think that you can take a battered old toy from the 1950's and make it into something far far superior to the Matchbox stuff of today. Bravo Marty!!!
love to see you like minibikes !
beautiful!!
So happy to see another video - makes my day every time
Another great video! Thank you.
have not searched your vids in a few months...glad to see that you have new content to view
Another fine job! We're happy with that.
Nice work! Headline of news paper in your spray booth made me laugh 😂
Very happy to see you again. Love your videos. Please never stop making great makeovers. 👍🏻
Another great restoration Marty, I have lived in country Victoria my whole life. It was until I was a school that I realised you could drink town supply in some places. We always drank tank water. 😅😅
Great video! I liked the military diorama you showed for a second too, i would like to see a video on that!
If you have an old fashioned bread knife with the rounded tip, they make a good tool for creasing card - as they thin, they are easy to run along the ruler's edge.

love this casting never seen it before very cool. looks better than new
Great job Marty very relaxing to watch, nice double meaning made me smile anyway.
Awesome and therapeutic.
One of the ads that played was of a koala 🐨 and I immediately thought of KEVIN !!
Marty you are the man. Always a pleasure watching you. But I am envious of how organized your hobby room is. Mine is not so much.
Fantastic color match, like it, like it, like it !!! David in Texas USA
Made my day watching another brilliant video. Cheers Marty

Remember the tanker is carrying avgas or avtur. For aircraft, Hence needs Jerry can for the diesel.
