  • I figured it was time to take a look at the HiFi setup I've had in the background of a few of my videos!
    This wasn't meant to be a guide or anything super in-depth. Just a look at what I'm using. The more interesting components will get there own videos later so I didn't want to give away too much. This was a kind of fun video to make and I'm always eye different parts to put in here instead. I think this could become an annual thing to revisit.
    Here's that shelf I showed for record displaying while playing: amzn.to/34QYeqB
    Things with videos shown here:
    Cassette Changer(Pioneer CT-WM60R): • Cassette Changer Repair
    Receiver(Pioneer SD-780): • 0x0022 - Pioneer SX-78...

    Small CRT TV(Sony KX-4200): • 0x0026 - The Smallest ...

    I've been thriving for audio gear for about 6 years now and have not come across ANY of the trophy pieces you've managed to collect. The audio gods have set the wind at your back, enjoy it while it lasts.

    Something I like about the style of these videos - unpretentious, and no bullshit.
    (Really interesting hearing the origins and intention behind each piece!)
    Great setup!

    Those older Pioneer recievers are some of the best i have ever heard. Having the 680 running
    A pair of peavey internationals
    Yes the 15" black widow and horn, is nothing short of a religeous experiance. Especially
    Listening to master of reality.

    Love the new intro. The enthusiasm for your hobby and the system is great, and its good to know there are fellow VCR enthusiasts out there. Love the headphones, i'm after a pair of Warfdale DD1 which are a similar beast in terms of dual driver arrangment.

    This is the first time I'm watching one of your vids. I had to give you a 'like' the moment you said you don't recommend buying vintage at the high prices they now often command. Words of wisdom. (and don't get me wrong - I love vintage gear and have a few pieces, myself).

    So VHS actually has two independent audio recordings! A portion of the tape is dedicated to linear audio just like a cassette, and this is where Dolby B can help make it sound better. This audio sounds OK and is supported by every VCR. But VHS Hi-Fi is this really clever solution they came up with that encodes an FM Audio Signal into the tape, and it sounds downright incredible. If you've ever had a tape with a damaged area you can sometimes hear it going back and forth between the two.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dolby B NR is used on VHS tapes which have the linear audio track in stereo. From 1982 until the end of the 1980s you could get VCRs with linear stereo (not Hi-Fi). The sound quality is similar to a Type I audio cassette at SP speed and worse at slower speeds. In 1984 Hi-Fi Stereo was introduced with nearly CD-quality audio, not related to Dolby NR. For a while they sold VCRs which could play both the Hi-Fi and linear audio tracks in stereo, like the one shown in the video. The Dolby NR is only used with the linear audio track, as the Hi-Fi track is so good that it doesn't need it.

    • @wishusknight3009
      @wishusknight3009 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is true. My SVHS Sony can seemingly only use dolby on the linear track. The audio encoded with the flying head is already using its own type of companding. So dolby is only superfluous.

    • @Badassvidsz
      @Badassvidsz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why everybody compares the anlog sound with CDs to prove that this analog sounds great since we all know analog sound is superior by far than CDs' sound

    • @wishusknight3009
      @wishusknight3009 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Badassvidsz Pro's and Cons. CD's are by far not the best sounding digital medium. SACD and DVDAudio rule those categories, provided the recordings are mastered properly that is. Analog at its best has a certain pleasantness to it which is less fatigueing. However the replayability and preservation of the performance is squarely in the realm of digital.

      VHS Hifi is super impressive to me. It honestly sounds basically indistinguishable from CD through my shit speakers. Guess that's why they distributed some albums on HiFi VHS back in the day.

    You saying "YOU'RE NEVER GONNA NEED SUCH AND SUCH WATTS PER CHANNEL, 40 IS FINE" is the same as everybody in the late 80's/early 90's that always said "Why the heck would you EVER need more than 4 MB RAM for a home PC?!". You know I'm right. ;) (I totally understand that for your music listening experience needs, that's not relevant for you which is perfectly legit. ;)

    my dad bought a pioneer QX-949 quadraphonic stereo amplifier in korea before it was available in the west in the 70's. He told me that all his friends wanted him to bring it to parties and what not when he got out of the army and was back in the US, because it was the loudest, best sounding system anyone had heard at the time. He also had the massive matching pioneer speakers.

    I will often find little cassette storage boxes decorated in faux wood grain at thrift stores. They usually have three pull out trays. There are a few kinds; skip the kind that have gaps in the center of the trays, stick with those that are solid throughout (or upgrade later as you find them). These also work great for storage Nintendo Famicom, Sega Genesis and Mega Drive cartridges -- these are especially cranky about trays with gaps in them, though. Hope this helps!

    Cool nostalgic stereo system...I love vintage formats of the past...I had a vintage mid 80's Pioneer AV receiver that featured inputs for Laser disks,VHS and so on...But later in years changed to the newer higher quality 2 channel AV Onkyo receivers with network and blue tooth...It's a combination of analog/digital with audiophile quality..I have my Sony DAT, Sony Mini Disc, Philips CDR, Centrex/Pioneer 8 track player/recorder, Sony USB turntable, Sony CDR, Sony 3 head cassette deck, Denon cassette deck...Speakers are my Klipsch RM-15 studio monitors and my vintage Advent New Large {1980} with re-foam surrounds...Those speakers Advent are acoustically enclosed giving you a clean detailed warmth sounds...The sub is a Klipsch 10" that is adjusted to blend in with the main speakers...

    Great setup, man. And extra points for pronouncing Teac properly.
    The key with tape decks is simplicity - get the simplest one you can find that still delivers good audio quality. Teac made some good models, as did Realistic in the 70s and early 80s.

    Hi
    Enjoyed watching you go through stuff that interests you. One thing I noticed is that the Dynamic Processor on your shelf is the coolest piece there.
    It’s a shame that you haven’t been able to operate it properly, it would certainly enhance that middle of the road amp that you’re using. You may have to buy some descent speakers though.
    Still, it is nice to see young guys getting into these components.
    Keep it up!

    Great setup dude. It took me a while to get back to the point of actually having a standalone stereo again after many years of basically just driving in the car only having enough time to listen to a little bit of music from my phone. Many possessions have come and gone over the years, but the records have always stayed with me regardless if I had anything to listen to them on. I was fortunate to start aquiring cheap but good vintage gear as well a few years back and it's awesome to just sit down and listen again. Anything fun to keep my head away from the screen sometimes it a good thing. Also, kinda mad I've been waiting several years now for NIN to release the Quake 1 soundtrack on vinyl. They've been teasing me with their "coming soon" crap in their store for quite some time!

    About storing your cassettes; Grab all the IKEA Bekväm spice racks you can get. They comfortably hold 22 Norelco cases, and you can mount them as little as 4 cm's apart and still have easy access to the tapes. And the best part is; they still hold cassettes when mounted to a sloped ceiling (in my case an attic ceiling with 50 degree roofsides), so there's a massive amount of space that's normally unused suddenly available for tape storage.

    The reason to have 200 W, 500W or even 1 kW or more in an amplifier is to have surplus power to make sure the music reproduction remains unstrained and the speakers are kept under control (like an iron fist). That's why mediocre speakers sound much better hooked up to a great amp than great speakers hooked up to a mediocre amp. Likewise, the reason why a lot of gear sounds thin and anemic, is often not "digital" or "analog" (whatever is NOT to your liking and therefore the favorite scapegoat), but a cheap power supply of questionable size. That's why really high quality equipment can have power supplies 10 times bigger than they OUGHT to need on paper.

That's actually how I found your channel, when I was trying to find videos about it, lol. I'd also found one at a thrift store one day and was curious about its history.
    I also have a copy of Def Leppard's "Historia", but not on VHS - on LaserDisc/CD Video instead. It's the only CDV I own along with the Money for Nothing CDV single and I believe also Scorpions' Big City Nights.

    I've got the same turntable, but I'm having trouble with the antiskate. The stylus keeps wanting to drift towards the center and will skip over the lead in grooves sometimes. I've heard that there's a replacement spring available from AT that will fix that, but it seems like a major surgery. Did you have that problem as well?

    19:10 -- That's a nice CD player! I have the 508ESD. Does yours have the magnetic laser sled? That's the unfortunate thing about mine, if my laser goes out I can't replace it. :(
    Did you try adjusting the focus and tracking controls? Maybe that might fix the skipping problem. I had to do that to mine when I got it.

    I have a Technics cd player model SLP-104 (1985 I think?) that had a drive very similar like your Sony. It also had an issue of the tracks skipping around. Turned out to be the belt. Ended up having to find an o-ring that fit. Took forever to get the perfect one. I Love Technics stuff so I have a Technics cd player, turntable, Stereo, and also a Realistic 8-track player/recorder.

    The DVP-S900ES if it's reading CDs and DVDs properly probably just needs to have it's laser re calibrated trough the service menu. Look for the service manual for it and it walks you trough how to do it. You don't need special discs, any pressed CD and pressed dual layer DVD should do (you need 1 of each). If you do the SACD calibration with a hybrid disc it will probably throw an error at you.
    I managed to get a DVP-NS705V reading hybrid SACDs again running the CD and dual layer DVD calibrations, and then the SACD calibration (labeled LCD in the service menu in my unit) just errored out with a hybrid SACD, but after that hybrid SACDs work fine now.
    Fair warning tho, the auto calibration sequence might be increasing the power of the laser shortening it's lifespan, so you might have to swap it out anyway.

    Very nice setup AkBkuKU - I also have a VHS in my stsem for the same reason, there were a lot of music video compilations released on VHS that I love to be able to watch with the video accompanying.
    But you should really considering actually using that Pioneer RG-2 for audio processing - I have the previous model, the RG-1, and it does a fantastic job of increasing the dynamic range of formats like cassette, increasing the high end and generally providing a "fuller" sound all around. Try playing a cassette through it, I'm sure you'll be impressed!

    I didn't have time to read all the comments to see if anyone already addressed this, but the sound quality of VHS HIFI is as good or better than CDs. Full 20-20k frequency response, great dynamic range, great S/N ratio and zero wow and flutter. the video cassette with Dolby C is just normal low quality VHS analog audio with Dolby C to try and mitigate the ridiculously high nois of VHS analog audio. Also, the VU meters are used to adjust the record level (see the record lever adjustments on the inside of the door?) when you wanted to record in VHS HIFI, what was at the time the best recording medium you could buy. Saying the the cassette that said, "VHS HIFI" didn't say much is like saying that The Mustang that says it's a Cobra 5.0 says nothing, but that you would rather have the 3 cylinder 2020 Ford Escape because it says it has a turbo.

So far I have a Technics tape deck (cost me a grand total of 1€) and a Blaupunkt (rebadged Hitachi) amp (3€ + 5€ shipping). What really annoys me is that I wanted to calibrate the tape deck, but calibration are so damn expensive. really weird how no one is making new ones.
    The amp also has some problems: the right channel sometimes stops working at low volumes, probably due to a bad solder joint or rusty relay. And the inside is just covered in huge amounts of dust (i removed most of it, but I need to get some compressed air to get the rest.
    The tape deck isn't much better off: the main motor (the one driving the capstan) of the A deck (the one i use most because it has auto-reverse and recording capabilities) starts squealing after it's run for about 2 hours and stops if i let it rest for some time. Probably some heat that is generated through friction, so I guess I need to oil (would need to get machine oil) or replace it (really don't want to do this as the actual tape mechanisms look like a nightmare to dis- and reassemble.
    And then there is my Walkman, which I already recapped to combat noise (which helped). Sadly I also found out that the biggest source of noise was the motor which runs very badly and probably needs replacement (I would need to get it from china though).
    Sorry for ranting so much. Just shows how HiFi is is just something you can invest lots of time into without ever being really done.

    nice choice of turntable cartridge. I also have the m97xe and the Ortofon Red carts. LP Gear sells replacement and upgraded styli for the m97xe. might be worth the investment to keep it and possibly upgrade it with a new stylus.

    Love those vintage blue headphones! Are they comfortable? My experience with vintage headphones is that they are not as comfortable as modern ones!

    I have the same SACD NIN disk - I have a Sony DAV-S500 I played it on (and it definitely sounded different in SACD mode), but annoyingly the DVD player part of it has broken so I've nothing that'll play that layer of the disk at the moment.

    Man, I'm really jealous of those ES DVD and ES CD player. At least I can comfort myself with my ES cassette deck.
    I'd look at getting a universal player nowadays instead for DVD-A and SACD. Part of the issue with those formats is that they're all sort of kool-aid-y. DVD-A is "hi-res" and SACD is...SACD. I think the real draw for those formats (and Blu Ray audio too) is surround sound.
    It's really cool, but it's difficult to incorporate without dedicating a room to it, and requires 3 extra speakers of equal quality to your front left/right channels. I'd still give it a shot. There are a number of copies of everyone's favorite T-shirt brand Dark Side of the Moon that are surround, including the SACD and the Immersion Blu Ray box set, and a guy named Steve Wilson has been remixing a bunch of prog rock albums in surround. Surround sound music is by no means the perfect format for every song, but it can be used very effectively on the right tracks.

      I've been looking for a universal player myself for that reason. I don't think I'd personally be able to hear any supposed improvement over a regular CD in stereo, but I am really curious to try multichannel music.

    My experience about the muff type ear phones has been bad ever since I first tried them. Sounded great -- but I could not use them more than 20 minutes. By that time my ears were sloshing wet. The other people in our group agreed and everybody wanted to use our alternative, the light weight Sennheiser earphones. No muffs! That was in 1960's, so I'm pretty sure they are not available any more even at eBay.

    BIG fan of the Stanton Dynaphase Sixty. They're better than any headphone from '72 has any right to be. I also did the widely-recommended hole-plugging mod to tame the the bass and bring the mid details and treble forward some. I'm also going to be swapping the pads on mine since they're a little compressed. Yours seem to be in the best shape I've seen.

      Sealing them was completely game changing, it makes the heads usable for me because I can't stand the muddled mids it had before. I really like how they sound after that, most other "quality" vintage headphones I've tried don't sound anywhere near as good.
      I actually got these practically unused in the box. The crystals have wear on the outside because of how much time they spent in it. Outside of that, they are mint.

    What is an “isolated tray” on a CD player? Google isn’t turning up an answer.

    • @TechTangents
      @TechTangents  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That wasn't the correct word, I should have reshot that part. "Dampening" or "Presenting" would have been better. Some CD player trays have rubber pads or a spring mechanism that keeps you from just dropping the disc on the tray. I've seen some of these and I like how it adds a little more flair to the process, but outside of that it really doesn't matter since the discs are lifted away from the tray for playback. Some will also lift the disc up when the tray is fully extended.
      The DVD player I showed has something like this, the tray is very small and has raised rubber pyramids in the corners. So the disc is only suspended on the outside by four points of contact with the rubber. I don't like this one though as centering the disc is more difficult and requires more thought when changing discs than a deep tray.
