- Darby (RiverBendSurvival) and I spent three days bikepacking the Hill Country State Natural Area in Bandera, Texas, USA. We had a blast exploring the area while practicing bushcraft and survival skills. We 1) learned when it is best to “walk your bike,” 2) built sleeping shelters (3 designs), 3) dug a seep for drinking water, 4 ) discussed dos and don’ts of camp sanitation, 5) shared tips on preparing dehydrated food, and 6) talked about the Spring Bushcraft the Meetup.

You are invited to the Bushcraft Meet-up at Big South Fork National Park, Oneida, TN, USA, May14-18, 2016. Base camp will be at Bandy Creek Campground; hike the trails; go fishing; meet TH-cam friends; share stories and experience.

We have reserved group Campsite E1 for May 14-18, ADA accessible, standard non-electric, tent/hammock camping (114 people maximum), large screen shelter with fireplace, restroom with showers for our group. We paid reservation costs. Arrival on Saturday May 14; activities begin Sunday May 15 and departure on Wednesday May 18. Voluntary donations to cover costs will be accepted ($30 cash donation suggested per person for all 4 days). We take no responsibility for injuries or accidents.

The seep well worked very well and the chocolate and coffee is something I will have to try. Also liked the idea of the bike supporting the tarp. Oh the night shots Ken were just awesome. This was another "Start it up Man" video.

We have places in the swamp next to my house where it would be easy to make seeps.... but I've been afraid to try them, because there is heavy contamination of ground water in this area from agricultural chemicals and oil drilling pollution. Back in my youth when Westerns were king on TV, I think it was an episode of Big Valley or Bonanza, some folks dug a seep. I thought it was just Hollywood nonsense, so it was surprising to me to see on your video that this is indeed a thing. Amazing. Thank you for the video!

+billy joe denny We had a blast Billy Joe. The campsite on the rock was much more comfortable than I expected.. The grasses made a big difference. Plus it was a remote area, I heard sounds from large 4 legged animals several times during the night... scary but good... Also can't wait till the metope!!!

I do the same thing, burning the inside of the cans to get the scent out. I'm guessing the plant was Sorrel? Loved the night sky and owls!! I think that pot thing was an old air cleaner of some kind from a vehicle or maybe a tractor but I'm not sure. That shelter setup with your bike is great for an emergency! Great water steep! That's a good idea putting your hammock close to the ground. I would imagine you don't get a lot of cold air glow under the hammock. I'll have to give that a try.

For a retiree Ken you're doing quite well as far as health and fitness go you know, you put me to shame really and I'm just into my mid fifties! I struggle doing what you do here in these vids, years of smoking and drinking and bad eating and living not a very healthy life I suppose, its all caught up with me now, but I've got to try, that's why I took hiking, and because I really like it too. +Neanderthal 62 We have locations where I could dig seeps where I live in south east Texas .... but I wouldn't drinks the water, because it it heavily contaminated with man-made chemicals that are not easily removed by filtering / boiling. I live in an area that was a swamp 50 years ago and used as a chemical dump. So seeing a sump with water that appeared "clean" was a pleasant surprise.
I believe the item you picked up in the house was an corroborator air filter cover.

Great video ken, bike/tarp set up looked very handy, quick question when you was collecting that grass would there not be a chance of a snake being in the grass, I live in the UK so we don't get dry grass much 😆but didn't know what the potential for snakes in that area,as always thanks for taking us along, cheers craig
+Craig Twiner Yes, there is a chance that snakes are inthe grass. However, I checked they area thoroughly before collecting gross and I could see the ground because the grass with thin. There was a greater possibility that ticks were in the grass than snakes..... and as it turned out, I did receive a tick bite on this trip. I don't know where I contacted the tick, but it might have been when I was collecting the grass. I was wearing tick repellent on my clothing and tick repelling was on my ground cloth.... but apparently that wasn't enough.
I like that Idea Ken another great video. You might want to share how you rigged out the bike and your thoughts on choosing the right bike, for bikepacking. Any roads up, another great video ken keep it up.

Back then that was livin large cartoons a couple cliff hangers and the main attraction a cowboy movie yes sir ... liven large
Great trip. I never thought of a seep. What kind of bikes were the two of you riding? I have not rode a bike since I was a kid. Looks like fun. The wife nd I are going to do some RVing along with my Bushcrat camping and a bike could be fun. See you this spring.

In situations where I have hungry, I've eaten any animal I can easily captures, from insects to mice/rats.

Hi Kenneth, thanks for another great video! I was wondering what state your home base is? Some video looks like Florida, and this is Texas. I see that the meet up coming up is in Tennessee. I guess you travel quite a bit for your camp outs?

I always enjoy your videos. Seeing places I will never be able to see, learning something new and just being fun to watch. I am trying to edit some videos which I have not done in a while. I can not get Windows Movie Maker to work and from what I have read it is not capatible with Windows 10 but I can't get it to work any more on Vista either. I am curious if you can tell me with video editing software you use? I enjoy how you put yours together.
+P Shadwick I heard if you lay a wooden spoon across a boiling pot/cup that it won't boil over. I haven't tried it yet but plan to. Plan to try a wooden stick also.

Hi Ken, at 3:40 will the brush and tree branches overhead make that big of a difference in heat loss? Or does wind speed/shielding from wind make the most difference?
+Melvin Wei The difference depends on cloud over, humidity and wind speed. Fifty years ago (as part of my PhD dissertation) I studied microclimates and how invertebrates use them for thermal regulation .
