Dispersed Primitive Camping in a US National Forest

  • This video describes the extra responsibilities and skills required for dispersed primitive camping, compared to campground camping. I also review the gear that I typically use.
    (1) KNOW BEFORE YOU GO - Be prepared with proper map(s), information, and equipment. Check with authorities on what is allowed in your area.
    (2) CHOOSE THE RIGHT PATH - Use existing trails and avoid trampling seedlings or flowers. Walk on durable surfaces such as bare ground or rocks. Avoid making new trails between your campsite and the main trail.
    (3) CAMP 200 FEET AWAY FROM TRAILS AND WATER SOURCES - If you are camping where others have camped before, pick a site that has been previously used. Do not camp in the middle of a clearing or meadow; try to make your campsite less visible so that other visitors will see a "wild" setting.
    (4) KEEP WATER CLEAN - Do not put soap, food or human waste in water. Bury human waste 4-8 inches deep and at least 200 feet from water, camp or trails. In sensitive ecosystems, it may be necessary to carry-out human waste.
    (5) STASH YOUR TRASH - Take your trash home and dispose of it properly.
    (6) LEAVE IT AS YOU FIND IT - Leave vegetation, rocks and historical items as you found them. Don't try to level or dig trenches in the ground at your campsite. For tents, pick a site that's already level with good drainage.
    (7) BE CAREFUL WITH FIRE - Be aware of local prohibitions on burning. Use camp stoves. If you make a campfire, don't build new fire rings or build fires next to large rocks. Use dead wood from the ground; don't break limbs off trees or cut trees.
    (8) FOOD - Do not put food in your tent. Store food away from the reach of wild animals.

    I loved this video, Ken, and the way you presented "stealth camping" was excellent. I love this way of camping. I wish all those who entered our beloved forests would treat them the way you do so our descendants can enjoy what has been bestowed upon by the man above. I have the same tent but mine is OD green. I was stationed at Lackland in San Antonio and subsequently retired there. The surrounding lakes, Braunig, Calaveras, Choke Canyon and others provided some really awesome adventures for me and my buddies which included incredible bass fishing in our bass tracker. I wish that I had spent more time in East Texas though...I'll be back someday now that I'm "totally" retired. We are considering moving to Waco as I truly love the Hill Country. I would love to meet one day on the trail.

    Super video, Ken. I started watching it late last night and then passed out cold after eating my wifes' store bought fried chicken with jalapenos. MMM good. I also ate my favorite childhood meal - 2 slices of "spam"- this one was the lite variety. I just like it! But back to your "show"- what a paradise, the trek you made. All the sounds of nature without any sign of intrusion. You are becoming better at being "one" with nature. God love you, Ken. Your videos are becoming great masterpieces of the outside world. Forget outer space--this is the real life walk and you are doing it. I hope your own kin realize your specialness. You are unique! My wife even said, "Ken is just like you, experimenting and doing". That's a complement to the both of us. Thank you, sir! ATB, Jb.

      Nice meal, Jb; mmm it would put me to sleep too. It was a beautiful weekend. I was surprised that the parking lots (for the wilderness area) were filled. This of us who enjoy the outdoors must all have had the same Idea. Wonderful weekend. I met three YouTubs subscribers too. I'm trying to make videos that portray the feelings of love and peace that I receive when being outdoors. Also, folks new to hiking and camping have many questions --- so videos like this are intended to provide an introduction …and make the experience of primitive camping less frightening. My wife likes the outdoors …. but only when viewed through a window. So our backyard has a wonderful view of nature with many bird feeders. She sits and watching all day. ATB, my friend. Ken

    I really enjoyed this video, my father-in-Law used to camp but mostly hike
    until he was 75 yrs. young (unfortunately he had a stroke). I have camped many,
    many times and my husband has been hiking since he was 5 yrs young, we are
    both 50 now, but plan on taking our teenagers hiking and camping.
    I found your video to be incredibly informative and calming. As I was watching
    I was wishing I was there. Living in the city makes me really want to go to
    the woods and camp. I did subscribe and look forward to watching more !

    I’ve got the same sleeping bag. Camping solo is cool. If you’re quiet enough, the animals don’t know you’re there until they’re right on top of you!

    Ken, your video makes me wish I still had the legs for that style of camping. Over the years, we've had a couple of pickup truck slide-in campers. The smaller of the two stayed on our truck full time. Usually it was an oversized storage box, because we took a tent and used it often, instead. Favorite places were always away from organized camping areas.
    Love the peace and solitude that you portrayed here. Just to be still, watch & listen as the sun rises and the natural world wakes up. To drink in all nature has to offer while sitting beside a small hidden stream. To relish the simplicity of making a cup of coffee in this complex world. Your videos express that and more. Their sense of peace comes through softly and clearly. Almost as if being their to experience it first hand.
    Thank you for that, my friend. A much treasured gift, this morning.

    • @KennethKramm
      @KennethKramm  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lee. To me, there is nothing better than the quiet beauty of the outdoor world. The older I get, the more difficult it is to hike and camp in the way shown in the videos. Often times I don't walk very far, but rather enjoy the beauty natural peace. I'm attempting to make videos in such a way that viewers feel they are coming along. ATB, my friend. …Ken

Thanks as always for sharing a great video. Peace my friend! Pete.

    I like to use my hammock for primitive camping as it doesn't require a flat spot which is often provided in traditional campgrounds. The term "stealth" has a more illegal stigma attached to it than "dispersed" or "primitive" camping. Nice video.

    • @KennethKramm
      @KennethKramm  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Good points. You are absolutely that hammocks are great for primitive camping for the reasons you state; plus they are lighter weight and smaller to carry than traditional tents. Strictly speaking, stealth means "invisible." Often people want to be stealth, so they can observe wildlife better, have low visual impact, and leave-no-trace. Folks can stealth camp legally, but the term is frequently used to reference illegal camping.

    Kenneth, thank you so much for this video. I live in central London (England) and I have always loved tents. We don't have much opportunity here to get out to the country for camping weekends because we have to travel quite a long way but I do have a tent that I put up in my living room sometimes. People think I'm mad but I find it so comfortable. I sit in it for hours listening to the radio. I also love the countryside so your video has made me more determined to actually get out and go camping! Thanks again, Kenneth.

    • @KennethKramm
      @KennethKramm  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom. Thanks for writing and commenting. It means a great deal to me. Several of my friends in the US do the same thing…put tents up in the living room. Sometimes I sleep in a tent in the living room with the grandchildren too. Lots of fun. I'm glad to know that my video has encouraged you to go camping outdoors! One of the reasons I purchased this tent is because it has single wall construction (and other people say it performs well without condensation). Because of the single wall, it is easy to setup during rainstorms….and doesn't get wet on the inside (unlike my expensive backpacking tents --- that have separate rainflies. Have a good week ahead! ATB … Ken

    PEACE Ken,
    This is a great video, I identified strongly with it.
    However I have never slept well on a thermarest and find the cheap backpackers inflatable ribbed beds far more comfy tho less robust.
    Thanks for another wonderful video. It is cold and damp in the UK right now.
    Sandy

    • @KennethKramm
      @KennethKramm  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Sandy. Interesting. My back likes thermarest pads much better than inflatable ribbed beds. Wish I could sleep directly on the ground…but my body goes numb unless there is plenty of leaf litter / spanish moss / soft ground. I wanted to demo camping with an inexpensive tent in this vid; and this tent worked better than expected. Hammock camping is so much lighter / easier / with less environmental impact. But many folks don't sleep well in hammocks.
      We consider the current weather in southeast Tex to be cold and damp….but its all a matter of perception. It is much colder/damper in the UK, I'm sure. Best time for camping / hiking is from now until May. After that it is too hot with too many biting invertebrates and venomous snakes.
      Peace,
      Ken

    I have this tent. I've had similar tents in the past. Once in an extreme storm on Padre Island. Sustained high winds. The tent is strong and will hold up if secured properly. The tent will leak. Wind will blow water through the seams. To correct this I used three coats of scotch guard. the entire tent must be treated not just seam sealer. Also using the original poles, I cut two inch pieces of broom handle that I drilled one end to fit on top of the tent poles. The other end I shaped and sanded until round and smooth. I then could stretch a small camo tarp over the tent as a rain fly. Condensation is also a problem so make sure the back window is open enough to prevent this. Great value for the money. Brian

    • @KennethKramm
      @KennethKramm  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Bloodworth Thanks for your comments. I've uses seam sealer which has helped. The biggest problem I have had with the tent is water blowing the entrance... if it is windy.

    • @KennethKramm
      @KennethKramm  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Bloodworth I'm thinking of adding a small vestibule ... for storage space. But after getting 1 inch of water in the tent (through a entrance that was partly open) during a heavy rainstorm... I have haven't used the tent sense ...

    Great video, I always find it funny that most people have special names for this sort of camping. Things like stealth camping, or primitive camping, etc. But to me and how I was taught camping growing up, this is normal camping. Even a bit fancy to me, since I usually use a canvas tarp as my shelter and a blanket. I'd of used all those dead dry leaves for my bed. And when you leave, just spread them back out so it looks like no one was ever there. Keep up the great videos Ken. And enjoy every moment you get to spend outdoors.

    This video was particularly affirming for me. I have never "studied up" on primitive camping. I've just followed the old principle, "Take only pictures, leave only steps." It was gratifying to know that I follow about 95% of your best practices -- even the "El Cheapo" tent! The one thing I don't comply with is that I have a bright orange tent. I've just never trusted myself to find my tent again if I wander off, particularly when I'm very tired. -- The most amazing thing is when I quit walking and crunching leaves and just sit still. At first, the forest is silent. But after about 5 minutes, it comes back to life: Squirrels chattering and running around, birds tweeting, and more. :)

    Really great video Ken. Your videos are always a treat to get to watch. I used to have a similar tent to that. One trick I always did..on your side guy line ropes, about halfway down the rope I would put a stick upright about 2ft tall. This will pull the sides of your tent out and up instead of down. Thanks for sharing your trip with us.

    I have the same tent. For the weight and pack size it just cant be beat without spending $300+ on a big agnes. If you use trekking poles or just rope between 2 trees its 2.5 pounds. You could also just cut a couple sticks on arrival or if you use the poles it comes with its only 3.5 pounds. Only thing youll need to do it brush on some seamler, spray it with camp dry, and replace with paracord.

    Ken - Excellent video, thank you for sharing. I like the term "dispersed" camping, describes it well. You have good details, great editing, good comments added where necessary, nice sound too. May I comment on the tent you used: I purchased that tent also, found that it leaks from multiple points. Rain-proofing can only be done by adding a 10x12 cover tarp [camo, of course] on top. I put a grommet on the center of each of the long sides where the top of the poles go thru, then used 4 stakes on each short side (8 stakes total) to bring the sides right down to the ground. This also added space for gear outside the tent under the tarp. It's a bit stuffy but will not allow water through, just around the bottom from outside. This extra tarp does add weight, but since I camp in the Northeast, rain is a perpetual problem. If you add a 10x12 cover tarp to the tent it will work fine in the worst downpours.

    • @KennethKramm
      @KennethKramm  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Milo Tsukroff Hi Milo. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. I haven't had problems with the tent leaking in the seams, even during heavy rainfall. ....but I did use seam sealer. Power, the door opening leaks... and needs vestibule over the area to be waterproof. Water comes into the tent when it is windy from this design flaw. Thanks for describing how you have corrected the problem. ATB, Ken

    Ken - it was nice to meet you on the trail head in the forest - as I said then - I thought you looked familiar! - btw - when we backpack and use dehydrated meals, we use two back-to-back pot holders sewn together to hold the meal bag - then pour the hot water directly into the meal bag. Clean-up is simple for you just roll up the meal container and pack it out in your take-out bag - your water heating cup stays clean from only having had only water inside - see you again soon on the trail - Mike & Colleen

    • @KennethKramm
      @KennethKramm  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike and Colleen. It was nice to meet both of you. I usually pour hot water into the meal bag; but this meal was for two servings and I wouldn't be able to eat it all. Since I forgot to bring an extra baggie, the best approach was to put the food in the cup (and save the extra for another meal). I know doing this required extra clean-up, but I didn't want to waste the food.
      I'll be on the LST again as soon as it warms up; to do another vid, where I sleep in a disposable tent made from a modified/ventilated trash bag. After I finish camping, I'll use the tent/trash bag to pick up trash. The purpose of the video will be to encourage other campers to pick up trash. I will also talk about Trash Bash, March 29th.
      In celebration of 10,000 subscribers to my channel, subscribers will be invited to make video responses on how they clean up trash when camping. Winner will receive prizes.

      Hey Mike -- I wanted to give you an update. I will use the film clip of us meeting at the trail head in the upcoming film on "Secrets of Stealth Camping." The purpose of this film is to address a broad interest in this topic and answer the many questions about how to do it legally and safely. It is the most complex, complete and hopefully interesting video I have ever made. The introduction music for it was developed specifically for this film. Anyway, stay tuned…. It's taking a while to get the film completed…and it will be late March or early April before it is uploaded. Question: You state your first and last name in the film. I can bleep out your name, if you want… or I can leave it as is. Let me know. Thanks. ATB, Ken

    I really liked this video Ken! Great job! I'm glad you made the remark about never using the same path to and from your camp area. I've been doing stealth camping so long that it's something I forget mention. Lol. Thanks for taking us along.

    • @KennethKramm
      @KennethKramm  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Shane. As you know there are a several of reasons for not taking the same path: 1) if people are watching, they will wonder what's off trail AND you will no longer be stealth. 2) taking the same path will result in a trail that people will want to explore, and 3) a negative environmental impact.
      There are many things plan to demonstrate in the upcoming film "secrets of stealth camping." These practice exercise, include different types of "stealth" and will become reference videos for viewers interested in different topics. I plan to film the "secrets" video in March -- when there are wildflowers, etc. I've discovered a great location where I need to bike down a closed road for several miles to a lake that has an awesome view. A musician friend has produced custom music that will be used for the introduction / conclusion and major transitions. Other than that … all sounds will be recorded in the field. The completed project will also include clips from other TH-camrs too!
