    What a horrible end for Latimer and Ridley. Regardless of how much they offended Mary I, it’s still a horrible way to die. Especially Latimer!
    Thank you for not shying away from the brutal side of Tudor history, we need to remember all of history not just the happy things.
    I can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s video will bring.

      I kept wondering why the gunpowder didn't work. I suppose green branches didn:t produce a flame lively enough to reach the bags.
      Poor souls.

      I'm not sure if it was a case of offending Mary I, rather that the Heresy laws had been reintroduced during the reign of MaryI by Parliament and burning was the usual punishment for Heresy. I guess Mary had the power to to intervene and lessen the punishment but I don't know the circumstances. And remember, Mary had a council to advise her.

    Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley were mentioned in Ray Bradbury's book Fahrenheit 451. When I taught that book, I had to explain to my students who wouldn't have gotten the illusion without knowing the background.

    On August 8, 1555 an agreement was reached in Augsburg, Germany that gave parity between Protestants (mainly Lutheran) and Catholics in government positions in the city and any other official positions. This was reintroduced after the Thirty Years War. We celebrate Friedenstag (Peace Day) as a public holiday every year on August 8. My own family history encompasses the Tudor years and not Augsburg, However, I'm quite proud of my adopted city especially when learn of the Oxford Martyrs in my own ancestral country. Thank you for your wonderful insight into this era of English history.

      @@marionarnott750 So do we know if Mary possibly had anything to do with the selecting of the wood used to burn these men? Or was it just an awful day to be burned at the stake? You'd think they'd test a few pieces to see if it would have been able to burn correctly!

    • @marionarnott750
      @marionarnott750 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peachymeechie1844 I wonder if the burnings were carried out by a trained executioner or just by any official or soldier who happened to be handy.
      The horror of executions by axe going badly also calls into. question the efficiency of executioners - no wonder Anne Boleyn wanted the French swordsman for her execution. Although I did see a horrible history type programme which showed that the Tudor axe was badly weighted and led to those executions which required many strikes to kill the victim.
      All in all, death by burning or axe was amateurish.

    • @peachymeechie1844
      @peachymeechie1844 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@marionarnott750 I also watched that documentary. I thought the same thing. Either way you die it's just the roll of the dice if you get a good executioner or not, and luckily for Anne, Henry thought he'd do her a last favor by getting the swordsman from France. Thank God because if not her execution would have been one of the more gruesome ones because I just feel like Anne was a fighter and wouldn't have gone out so easily. I know they said he distracted her by asking for the sword when he already had it in hand and so she didn't expect it yet. So she did luck out in a way, but being burned would have been the worst thing I could have ever imagined. Even now when people die in fires you know it is a prolonged way to go. I don't think I'll ever understand why Mary thought she was helping them by purifying their souls and sending them straight to heaven. Nope, it was just a prolonged evil way to kill!!

      In England, it was abolished for heresy in 1676 and for female traitors, the last woman to be burned alive was in 1726, although 1784 for a woman who was already dead.
      Hanging, drawing and quartering, burning, beheading, boiling to death, hanging... They're all horrible, and, of course, there's still capital punishment in countries today, although some try to make it "humane". Burning is still being used as a method of execution today in some countries.

      I don't think Mary was a crazy woman at all. Admittedly she had an axe to grind in the case of Thomas Cranmer, in particular, whom she would have seen as the one responsible for ending her parent's marriage, and being separated from her mother and never seeing her again. Also remember that Cranmer was implicated in having Lady Jane Grey declared Queen contrary to the Will of HenryVIII which stated that Edward, then Mary then Elizabeth would be in line for the succession. Mary didn't personally sanction the executions, they were sanctioned by Act of Parliament and she was advised by her council. Mary was (unfortunately) a victim of her times.

      @colinlavelle7806 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luke77: Mary Tudor is not in hell....in the first place I don't believe there is such a place. Queen Mary was not personally responsible for the punishment of of these people, she was advised by her Council and Parliament had enacted laws against what was deemed to be heresy. Anyone accused of heresy was given a triail. Thomas Cranmer the evangelical Abp of Canterbury had planned to restore the death penalty by burning for heresy before Edward's death intervened. Hugh Latimer the evangelical Bp of Worcester preached and presided over the 'roasting alive' of the Franciscan Friar John Forest in 1538 during the reign of Edward VI. Part of the fuel for the fire was a wooden image of the Welsh pilgrim Darvell Gadern. You need to read more of English History. Mary Tudor has been much maligned in English history for hundreds of years simply because she was a catholic and wished to return England to the old faith.....the faith of English Kings, saints and bishops extending back for hundreds of years until the emergence of the greedy, selfish, vindictive Henry VIII. Mary Tudor was a more hard working, hands on and decisive Queen that is commonly recognised.
