    I really think it depends on your mentality. He learned to cut by creating lines and erasing them. It’s more “mathematical” and lends itself to someone who is more visual and has to see each step being completed. That’s why your fade down technique didn’t make sense to him because he had no way to satisfy his desire of seeing, rather than feeling.

    I learned how to fade top to bottom first but in the shop i work i had to get faster and fading top to bottom gave me the speed i needed. Went from 1hr+ fades to 30min tops with beard and everything. I started my career june of 2020

    Ive been cutting my own hair since i was in 8th grade. I am 37 now and still cut it myself. It takes some time just to learn your hair,your head,what works and what doesnt. I been thru alot of clippers and recently my favorite for self cuts is the babyliss. Just seems so much easier to me to fade.

    I’m sorry but Alex can’t cut. Either way u fade, up or down is easy if u understand what a fade is…it’s literally a transition. No disrespect. It’s not that hard

  • @Jonathan-ey3fx
    @Jonathan-ey3fx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Totally got it. That’s why sometimes I go a little higher using my corners with a blade open to transition the guards

    Down fading is probably great for actual barbers. But for self cutters, it's probably easier going from bottom up with guidelines

  • @Hairwithemz
    @Hairwithemz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Final comment. My general fading technique would be a hybrid. Blade open guide, 0
    1/2 guard/0 guard guide. Blend down from a 2 guard.

    Maybe suggest putting in his guidelines fading up, and blend them together fading down. That way you still have those guidelines but u can control the gradience thru fading down.

    As a newer barber I tend to fade up or a hybrid of fading up through the lower guards and down through the higher guards, fading down the whole cut can get me abit lost

  • @mads5610
    @mads5610 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I fade down when I'm using higher guards, so if I want my sides to go from a #6 to a #2 I'll fade down. But for bald fades I always fade up, so that I can get it even all around easier. I do get where both of you are coming from, there ain't no right way it's just the best way for each individual person.

    Down fading was the first and only way I was taught when I first started. It wasn’t until years later I started using the fade up process. I remember being nervous as hell the first time fading up. I thought it was crazy putting hard lines in and trying to fade them out. Seemed like more work to me. Now I incorporate both depending on the Client.

    Create your guidelines going up all the way to 3 open and Clipper over comb
    Then down face with the 2 closed, 1.5 closed, 1 closed, .5 closed, then blade open, blade halfway, blade closed
    Happy fading

    Fading straight down for straight fades, like mid fades or high fades, anything low and detailed a like a drop fade I’ll start like at the #1 to fade down, then fade down the bulk into the 1.

    I've been cutting my own hair for a bit now. I work my way down for sure, it's just easier for me to keep track of where my guards are going. I do a 3 all around, then about an inch of a 2 guard lever closed, then open the lever to blend the two sections a bit. And so on and so on down to a 0.5 guard finish (have not attempted a fade on myself yet). That's how I do it at least, I like it

  • @RicoSFyre
    @RicoSFyre 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The self-cut is not hard but it's not something you can sleep on either. Any master barber will tell you to get a system and work it till you can do it with your eyes closed. Same thing applies at home imho. I don't think he did too bad overall tho, good cut.

    It’s all repetition if he faded down as much as he did fading up it wouldn’t seem so difficult. he didn’t do horrible it just wasn’t what he was used to, personally I do both depending on client or just how I’m feeling .

I have a video on my channel where I do it that way… it was the first time I ever cut my own hair so it’s not perfect but I’ve gotten a lot better at it since then.
