Went yesterday after waiting for the craze to settle down. Went in with a game plan focussed on meat and we were not disappointed.
With the rebates on mince & chicken we ended up saving over $100 .
Bulk buying meat and deep freezing is our game and we LOVE it!

Costco is another step down on the ladder for NZ.
Following the American consumerism is certain doom for NZ.
NZ used to be so different 30 years ago - it seems the internet lobotomised half of the population in that time.

I’m from NZ but currently in Ireland. I was surprised at the savings here compared to NZ because of competition ( Lidl, Tesco, Super Value, Aldi, Dunnes, Marks & Spensers) Kiwis should support new players because the two big boys have ripped us off for years and claimed to be just scratching a living.

This is the best comparison video so far. For me being a one person household and an hours drive away this wouldn't be a viable option on savings but maybe on seeing what different items are available. It's a shame that you can't have a one off look to see if it's worth the membership fee. Thank you for doing this price comparison for us.

    • @BrentColeman

Hi Amy, I absolutely agree, allowing people in just to have a look around would make people much more comfortable paying the $60 for the card. Hopefully they do something like this in the future. If you know someone with a card, I was told that Costco will allow the cardholder to bring in 2 guests with them, however the cardholder will need to pay for the entire bill. I'm a one-person household too, with the savings on fuel and hoarding lots of chicken I've made good use of it so far, but to breakeven on the card you'll need to spend a fair bit given the cost of fuel to drive there too. Thanks for watching, and the kind words!

Kiwi based in AU - Costco is a hit and miss - you have to know how much the items cost outside of Costco to determine if you are getting value from Costco purchases. Additionally you have to finish items before they spoil given they have a short shelf life.

I firmly believe Costco is here not only for better prices, but to change the New Zealand consumer behaviour, from weekly to monthly (or more) purchases.
Costco uses a strong pricing strategy.
On the top of that, they could be willing to lose some money in the introduction stage, and competitor cannot beat that.
My concern is, all the war-prices lead to collusion...I hope this will not be the case, for the sake of the consumers and the market.
    Excellent video!.

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hi Juan, I too hope the prices are here to stay and aren't temporary. I have faith that the amount of collusion is only going to decrease as competition in NZ increases. If not 'collusion', the lack of competition is what's really plaguing the market right now. Thanks for watching!

Hi Peter, you're absolutely right. I've heard the hearing aids and glasses are significantly cheaper at Costco but haven't seen the prices myself. Went to Costco yesterday then ran a price comparison when we got home. Managed to compare 14 items using current prices at PNS, CD and NW and if I'd bought the cheapest item from these, it still worked out $68.59 cheaper at Costco. Some items I couldn't compare as the other retailers don't stock anything comparable. Best buys would be shampoo, nuts, ground beef mince, herbs and spices (oh and Babybel cheese - massive savings on those!). I wouldn't bother with the fruit and veg at Costco as the savings are negligible, but the quality was great though.

Thanks for the kind words! I am in this situation now too as I live locally. Supermarkets continue to offer a much broader number of items, as Costco has a narrow range of goods but stock a much greater amount of it. The next moves from the supermarkets to compete will be interesting as they can't on price, but perhaps a push to 'shop local' and enhancing their local kiwi goods selection. While Costco work only with brands at scale, supermarkets can work with their communities to build successful local brands, which they already do, but building on this would be great to see.

I guess the big difference is that the unit size is bigger at Costco, so while it's cheaper per kilo, you still pay more because you are buying larger units. But for essentials or staples, it's great. I get my laundry and dish detergents, toilet paper, milk powder, rice etc etc from Costco. Anything I definitely use and won't perish. And a chicken.

My experience with Costco in Australia is that it's no cheaper than anywhere else - I used to buy toilet rolls at Costco until I realised that I could get them for the same price at Aldi.
incidentally, if I had to pick between Aldi and Pak'nSave, I'd take Pak'nSave any day. They operate at a similar price point, bit the limited product range at Aldi means that you make a second trip to Coles or Woolworths anyway to get the items that Aldi doesn't stock.

Very true Aldi product range isn't great and what they have is from random suppliers so not always good but they create competition in the market.
What is needed here is for the government to grow a pair and pull out of international trade deals that only benefit major wholesalers NOT the shoppers here or growers and producers of some of the best produce in the world but stops growers even selling B grade fruit and veg at markets, B grade means spots or minor imperfections.
Greed of a few is not a reason to be locked into trade deals...
If these people cant sell the best produce in the world without dodgy trade agreements then they shouldn't be doing what they are doing. Lazy or useless you decide...
Why are we paying international prices for our own produce when NO shipping is involved worse why can you regularly buy NZ produce in Australia cheaper than here ??? how does that work ?
People support your local fruit and veg markets also local Butchers need support so they can start to reduce their prices. Although I doubt you find water in your meat to make it heavier at your local Butcher...
Don't believe me get a pork chop from a home kill and one from the supermarket fry them it will speak for itself...
After coming home after 12 years overseas I still can't believe what Im seeing here.

awesome review Brent!Thank you.Its not just the price difference and costco are head and shoulders below our generic supermarkets in NZ. For me its also about how we as customers to Pns and NW have been treated over the years...Patronised by so called low pricing which isn't the truth and you have clearly shown this..Working in the retail manufacturing /market as I have, my experience of our supermarkets deals/low pricing is because they lever the low pricing through manufacturers supplying and selling a product at well below there own preferred and sustainable profit margins. Also a thing to bear in mind, you can be a supplier but there is very rarely a supply contract which means all the risk on the success or failure of a product (which includes set up and packaging investment is on the manufacturer, not the retailer!

Great video and very useful $/weight comparison.
However, it fails to account for major inconveniences which add abstract value:
    1) commuting to far end of Auckland and cost of fuel spent. (not viable for most of Auckland)
    2) Cost of membership (which may be insignificant if you go enough times an year but break even number of visit may need to be calculated)
    3) Long queues and time spent.
    4) Possible wastage by being forced to buy in bulk and having to invest in extra storage: pantry/freezers.
    5) Stress/anxiety of too much planning required.
Still I am very happy that tyrannical reign of Woolworths and Foodstuff Group is being challenged.

    • @BrentColeman

If you got an LPG vehicle the cost of commuting would be much cheaper. You can sort of hack out of membership by being added as an additional cardholder from a friend (just need to show one bill with you at the same address (do a mobile bill)), or if they buy you Costco gift cards. Even though some things are bulk, the price is still so much cheaper than other stores that you still save money even if you throw some of it out.

Hey Brent, great work on this and thanks for your effort.
Few things I would like to point out, NZ Supermarket model is based on high/low, most popular products are on promotion 26 weeks of the year. Is PNS Westgate pricing promotional or the normal shelf price that you're comparing to? Ideally, you want to compare the best price or average visible price of each other due to the nature of each business model being different (NZ supermarket highly promotional vs Costco are not). Each PNS stores have different pricing therefore your title is slightly misleading as westgate PNS cant be used to represent all PNS stores.

I'd love to see a comparison based on the 100 most purchased items there were some real headscratchers in there. Also I'd be curious to see this done at least every three months, I suspect part of the reason things are so much cheaper are just a hook to draw customers in and that the real prices of these items will be higher once they are established in the NZ market and have to supply their goods to smaller retailers. I would also be curious to know how much that this in theory saves per week what you really need is data that is not just a one off otherwise there is no scientific merit. Is the club price worth it? The bulk buying aspect makes it work for some and not for others.

Even in the states it isn't always cheaper when it comes to some things, which I think is common with most stores, bulk, grocery, or otherwise. However when they have a deal it is amazing. Their eye, hearing, and other care is cheaper in some states and I hope it will be here as well. I always found that meats, pantry items, alcohol, and vitamins and toiletries were a great deal at Costco. As far as the cost of bulk buying it is something to consider. That is why the bring two guest option is awesome. If bulk buying is something you cant always afford, often you will have a friend who will bring you in as a guest for those cant miss savings. I don't know if they will do this here, but you get magazines and other monthly updates on their specials in the mail and online they list their prices so you can do comparisons. The produce and fridge section will always be hit and miss price wise simply due to their shelf life, though this could be different for bigger families or if shopping for a get together. When it comes to toys, decorations, furniture, etc the deals can be amazing depending on the brand and or quality you are looking for. I have found amazing deals over the years on travel, auto, clothing, etc. I believe it will be easier to price compare when their online portion of the store is up and running. Not sure what their return policy is here but in the states it is outstanding as are the gas prices. The big trap with Costco is impulse buying. Most of their stores don't have great cell reception and the good deal on a bulk buy can be tempting. The best advise I have is know your budget, think about what you use or go through a lot of, and consider whether the seasonal or other non bulk items can be purchased another day after having a chance to think about it and compare other retailers (think electronics, travel, auto, etc). You may need scissors, but do you need a pack of 16 in different sizes and for cutting different things? An actual question I had to ask myself at Costco once. At the time the answer was no, and the better option was to just buy one somewhere else.

At the end of the day, it is only cheaper if you live close to the Costco. The time and effort it would take to go there if you live on the other side of Auckland; not to mention 'fuel cost' as well. The government should definitely open up another couple more Costcos around the city and country!

Hi Billy, it definitely depends on numerous factors. Mindful of course that the fuel out there is cheaper too, so if you fill a full tank you'll be heavily subsidising the fuel cost to get out there. Hopefully as this is their first store, they'll have more coming to market over the coming years. This kind of business model is difficult with just one store as they need economies of scale to be viable. Thanks for watching!

Sounds good if you live close and have the budget to hand over large amounts of money all at once (to get the bulk-buy discount). Unfortunately that means Costco isn't for everyone but hopefully their existence will push other supermarkets to look at their own prices a bit.

the more competition that enters the market the more the prices will reduce between costco, pak n save, countdown and new world would be great to see some more competitors enter the market even if they only open 1 store per major city it will eventually make a huge difference i mean look at the likes of when kmart started to compete with the warehouse and the price reductions that the warehouse made and a store like ikea would again make a huge difference to furniture prices things like dining room tables are ridiculously expensive for 5 pieces of wood and about 20 screws nz needs more competition

Good video Brent, but some of the comparisons aren't fully true. Meat in particular see large rebates on short-dated items. Buying those rebated items sees significant savings on meat, bringing the real per kg price down from their listed price. Also comparing 'Value' brand cheese to a premium brand at Costco, just isn't like for like. Minor quibbles, cos otherwise a great comparison. I for one will be changing how I shop to take advantage of the bulk savings.

Hey Matt, looks like you found my channel! Yeah it's always tough to make comparisons between different brands/pack sizes/quality/promotions etc. Tried to take the approach of people looking to do their entire shop, therefore buying the cheapest items on offer in the case of cheese, and standard pricing as I wasn't sure whether the instant rebates were launch specials (as nearly all meat items had this) or are a standard feature. My freezer is full of food now, certainly won't be needing to go back there for a while! Hope you're doing well man!

At last a proper comparison of real products ( giant teddies, coffins & flat screens aren't on my regular shop list). For myself quick ponder on the "savings" i'd prob save $20 a month, then have to build in the $60 card cost sooo thats 3months savings to break even before i'm actually starting to save anything. Then there's the petrol to go there 15-20km each way - BUT can off set that by the petrol savings of the card sooo thats +/- & the fact its "an outing". I think if you have a large family etc & live in Massey area its perfect. Do you have to have the card to even get in the door or can you just go for a look round?

We've got our online membership and we're ready to head for our first visit. We have been members overseas for years so it's a bit different for us.
We are used to buying in bulk and having healthier options cheaper by ding so but until now that hasn't existed in NZ for us. The Costco organics range and healthy options or the biggest cost savers.
I think the point I would make is like us many people from outside of Auckland are actually traveling to Costco to shop as we have limited options for shopping and limited stock eg we have 2 smaller supermarkets being regional township but we are also a holiday destination so our population can jump from 33k to over 100k and much inbetween. Our stores are emptied often to bare shelves, being smaller they also cannot stock vast ranges either, they are also limited currently to less truck delivery top ups so again low stock.
We intend to do a quarterly shop of basics from a list of what we use, plus our Christmas food shopping. I have been able to complete a 8 page price list from online sources so I know my price points comparison wise i.e Costco is not cheaper for butter or flour than The Warehouse with Market club deals but they kick butt with everyone on coconut oil and maple syrup.

Problem with this is you are not measuring it correctly. Selling in Bulk will always be cheaper. Look at the meat for example. You are just looking at $/Kg and not taking into account the package size. Costco is selling Mince for example very cheap but that is a 3Kg package compared to the 500g package you can buy at Pack N Save. Should Pack N Save also start selling in bulk then they would be able to sell at the same price. Same goes for most food in Costco.....You need to buy in bulk to save, Costco is good for big households or for the reseller. Small families would find Pack n Save the cheaper option overall.

I shopped in costco Mexico..(I bought 5 Kg blocks of Anchor butter and hummus which was hard to get outside) the enormous amounts you need to buy to "save" can be a problem if you don't have a lot of storage space and a ravenous family. Also products seem to disappear for months and then reappear when the container comes . The general rule is larger packet sizes are cheaper - so it's not an Apples to Apples comparison really.
Is it just an introductory salvo to change buying habits before the prices rise? And the US dollar rise is bound to have an impact. Time will tell.
