If anybody reading this wants to do theirFJ40 knobs, and can’t get them old cause the screw is stripped or rust welded, there is a little known trick. instead of taking off the knobs (which don’t all come off BTW), just pop the hard plastic cap with the writing out of the softer rubber pull. It is inset in the pull, so You have to kind of fish it out with something pointy, but they pop right out and have a little indexing pin so it goes back in right. Works for all the knobs except the choke.

Put a little acetone on the rag, it will help clean it up faster … and the acetone won’t damage the knob.
Nail polish remover may also work depending on the brand of paint.

Acetone lightly damaged the surface of the knobs on my 81, made them hazy, maybe not noticeable if knobs were UV affected beforehand, use with caution

@@scod3908 I never had that happen to me … used sparingly then cleaned up with some polishing like car wax, came out really nice. Same results with nail polish remover. I just did it to my glove box “POCKET” handle, came out great!

@@ericbarrall5619auto polish is abrasive and would take off the top layer perhaps removing the affected layer?
I only used acetone to clean off a light smear of paint from the surface, unfortunately on some almost perfect knobs
I heavily buffed them by hand which almost brought them back to the original state and then repainted the recesses

@@scod3908 if you say … like I said, I’ve never had any problems, worked great for me. I’ve restored a 68 Vette, 70 Chevy Monte Carlo and now on my 74 FJ, not to mention several smaller items I’ve back-filled. But, I’m sure people have had a different experience.

Any chance you've taken a bj40 brake switch apart and know how to put the 2 little metal bits back in😁...

I'm not sure that's the original lighter. There are modern toyota ones from the 2000's that look similar to the original landcruiser switches, have a look in the glovebox of a few yaris/corolla/camry wrecks and should be able to find one

That ciglighter is not original. You can still get oem ones.
