Ah, the 3 Hunchback in a fursuit that gives Atlas' pilots nighmares. I fell in love with the murder bear after I stumbled on a short story how Kodiaks were used as literal dropbears years ago. It was absolutley ridiculous and absolutely glorious.
In my last game with my Ghost Bear force, my Kodiak managed to kill a pristine Atlas in a single round. The Atlas called out the Kodiak pilot and both closed to point blank (literally touching each other), while a city battle raged around us. Seeing the opportunity for what it was, I fired every single weapon into the big beautiful target. All but one laser hit. Everything. Ripped the right torso out with the Ultra AC20,melted the center with the lasers, and the missiles peppered the remaining metal until the Autocannon ammo blew. Not only did the Kodiak survive that battle, it went on to kill a hunchback three turns later. I will never not love this big beautiful mech, and it's ability to tear things apart at all ranges. With missiles, Lasers, Autocannons, and even Bear hands. Why do I love the Kodiak? Because few other mechs can give an Atlas pause, and none can do it with this much style. Been waiting for this video for a long time, well done as always! Thank you for doing my favourite mech justice! Long live the Ghost Bears!

Makes a clan XL look cheap and simple, makes an inner sphere XL look sturdy, and eats into your heat budget even when idling at a standstill. It's going to take at least two Star League to Clan level evolutionary leaps forward in making that tech truly worth it. Though with such advancements, you might be able to make "standard" "light" and clan "xl" engines even better.
My friends chosen clan is Ghost bear and I’ve stared down this mech more than a few times. If it gets close it ruins my day spectacularly. In universe I’d imagine seeing a mech this size not only run but friggin’ FLY towards you make you reach for your spare underpants. One of my favorite ever custom mechs is a Kodiak with claws and triple-strength myomer, which I designed solely out of my shocked disbelief that we didn't already have an official variant with real claws.
Seeing the Kodiak in MechWarrior 4 was truly awe inspiring. Most certainly helped it was paired with what that game had called "Clan Streak MRM 40" in each arm: impossible to not recoil in fear to a pair of those.

I've had mixed success playing with or against it, but there's just something about it. I love it.
Ah, the Kodiak, it's like a 2C version of the Atlas, which is probably the reason I like it alongside the other 2C Clan 'Mechs. It also looks _kind of_ like a bear, for folks who think the Atlas' skull face is more silly looking than intimidating (not myself, I love the Atlas).
I struggle to justify any of the variants outside of a some select niches. The prime is just too iconic and impressive. The spinoff though, that is evocative and complimentaty of the original prime. And as Shax would say, welcome to Bear Pack
I like how it works as a very close range focused very fast 100 ton clan mech. It feels like a clan successor to the Atlas with the rather nasty looking claws instead of the skull as the object of fear, and unlike the atlas running away is less of an option with the 4/6 movement profile means it can better close with the enemy. I feel like an opportunity was missed to give the MF 8 medium pulse lasers instead of the er mediums, as they would pair very well with streak missiles for a bunch of accurate fire.
I love the Kodiak becauae the Kodiak II was the leader of my first good team for the battletech clix game, the Steel Wolves Geoff Baker I believe. I picked up the IWM model so I could have him back for classic battletech. Its combination of range, forepower and sheer drip did it for me. It was aggressive, cool and deadly.
I actually have 3 variants for this, lol. The Kodiak ISM drops the UAC/20 for a 2nd ER large laser, and replaces the dual Streak SRM-6s with a single ATM-9 and 4 tons of CASE protected ammo. The 8 ER medium lasers are swapped for 8 small pulse lasers, and 4 jump jets are added. It also carries a total of 21 DHS. The Kodiak ISM 2 mounts a Plasma Rifle in the CT, with 2 tons of ammo in the RT. 4 ER flamers are carried in each arm, while an ER medium laser is in the right torso. An ATM-9 with 3 tons of ammo sits in the left torso, with a pair of jump jets in each side torso. It also has 21 DHS. My newest variant, done just moments ago, is the Kodiak ISM 3. It is a Mixed Tech platform, mounting IS TSM, 4 jump jets, and only 11 DHS. It mounts 18.5 tons of standard plate, and to be honest kinda seems like a Phoenix Hawk IIC for weapons, lol. Each side torso joints an LB-10X AC with 2 tons of ammo, and each arm has 2 IS Medium Re-Engineered medium lasers. That 28 heat tickles it enough to trigger the TSM.
I'm playing around with a Rasalhague Dominion variant that swaps some things out to reduce heat, ammunition dependance and give it actual battlemech claws on each arm.
When my friend introduced me to Battletech, I fell in love with the Hunchback and the FRR... but it did not take long for that to add in the Kodiak and the Ghost Bear's. Between the Kodiak, Karhu, and Khirghiz... I love everything the Ghost Bears create.
The intro to Mechwarrior 2 Ghost Bear's Legacy lives rent free in my mind. The Kodiak is the only clan mech I don't feel dirty after using. Sure, I'll use any salvaged clan material because it's effective on the battlefield. I just feel like I've typed in IDKFA and IDDQD when using most of the clan mechs. It's easy to be cool when the deck is stacked in your favor.
Honestly my only beef with the Kodiak is that so many ER Medium lasers is usually not viable to be used all at oncd unless your planning on running out of ammo and needing them as backups. It might be a better idea to drop 4 and add a 2nd ER Large Laser and greatly increase its long range punch
Kodiak was my first Clan Assault Mech I loved. Loved the claws on the mech and big bear hugs. Going to try the MF bear in megamek later tonight. Can see that mech being a city fighter so easily. Vehicles and infantry getting massacred. Granted no head cap weapon but well opportunity cost spares no one.
Every time I hear you say "ghost bear" all I can hear is the class roll call scene from Perfect Hair Forever. I'm betting nobody has any idea what that is and that's a shame. It was a short lived Cartoon Network show in the same vein as Aqua Teen Hunger Force. It's absolutely hilarious, although it's a very specific type of humor.
thanks for the video! it's true, I love the Kodiak (not the Kodiak II, though-it's a fine fire support command 'Mech, but steps away from what makes the Kodiak so cool and is way uglier to boot)
The Kodiak is practically an Atlas IIC in all but name. You'd think the Wolves would have made something like that (since the Atlas II was Nicholas Kerensky's mech of choice), but nope.
Love the Ghost Bears always having being presented as the “Clan based on Midwestern America “. Plus they have my favorite tidbit of the original clan invasion where a planet (Sheliak) thought they had outwitted the Ghost Bears by challenging them to a game they thought they had never heard of, American Football. Ghost Bears showed up with their Elemental gene warriors and crushed them 84-3.
the Kodiak head reminds me of an atlas that was squished by a hammer also i imagine the kodiak sheperding lighter ghost bear mechs, much like a mother bear and her cubs. gentle caring giant... until her babies are threatened

It's easy to be cool when the deck is stacked in your favor.
This has been my favorite mech ever since I first saw the ghost bear legacy intro.
GBL ignited my love for this beast and clan GB in '96, power overwhelming.
Kodiak Cale sounds like a smoothie
This is one I don't know well
Too recent and wrong faction
Looking forward to learning more!
Just got one of these out of a salvage box, looking forward to seeing what exactly it is
A big lovable cuddlebear.
thanks for the video! it's true, I love the Kodiak
(not the Kodiak II, though-it's a fine fire support command 'Mech, but steps away from what makes the Kodiak so cool and is way uglier to boot)
The Kodiak is practically an Atlas IIC in all but name. You'd think the Wolves would have made something like that (since the Atlas II was Nicholas Kerensky's mech of choice), but nope.
Inner sphere forever but i love the kodiak :-) looks intimidating and punches with the looks too...a rare combination :-)
Frog's gone full crunch...Kodicrunch: the tabletop friendship ender!
ahh the Kodiak the first of my painted Ghost Bear Omega Galaxy mechs
Sweet!
Appreciate the Munchkin reference
Much needed in these weird days.
Since I met it in the Mechwarrior 2 ghost bear, I think the variant I like the most is when you put 4 ultra 10 cannons and 8 ERSML, 4 per claw.
Dakka bear.
FAFO, Ghost Bear Edition.
Love playing Kodiaks on MWO
Good times had by all.
This video showed me one of my most jarring mistake in life: I don't own a CGL Kodiak miniature. I have to address this ASAP. 🐺🐺🐺
It's a fun one.
the Kodiak head reminds me of an atlas that was squished by a hammer
also
i imagine the kodiak sheperding lighter ghost bear mechs, much like a mother bear and her cubs. gentle caring giant... until her babies are threatened
No worries, cadets, this is just a training trip, it's all [unidentified dropship inbound] Everyone behind me. NOW
@@bthsr7113 haha, YES
The Kodiak is THE brutal Clan Mech for most, it's the pinnacle of Totem animal mech. Well, for me at least. :)
Ah yes, the Incredible Hulk of Battlemechs. One of these serves as a command mech in my pirate army
Excellent stuff as always, MechFrog. I love the colour plates and you had some nice new effects in there👍
I’d never seen some of the older art of the Kodiak🤔
I love any mech that can shut itself down in a single turn with an AlphaStrike😆👍
By the way, what’s the mech on the receiving end in the art at 9:20 with the skull shoulder-pads? I know it not!
Thank ya. Not sure about that mech's name.
@@MechanicalFrog I found it! It’s the Karhu👍
My son plays Ghost Bear/Dominion and i recently got him a couple Kodiak minis.... He absolutely loves them!
Going into this video I sure didn't expect a reference to Munchkins but here we are...
It's sure a thing that happened.
Not big into clan mechs, but this one is awesome
as per usual, the MF variant seems like it would the most fun to play KillerBear * *^^* * thx for another entertaining vid o7
