In the Battletech PC game I like using the Grasshopper as a heavy scout and close support 'Mech for my Assault Lance. The LRM5 and Large Laser let it take pot shots at enemy units while it spots for my modified Stalker firing lots of LRMs, while my Highlander and Atlas close the distance. It's mobile and versatile enough that it also watches our backs and keeps us from getting flanked. It's a great strategy that consistently results in lots of destroyed enemy 'Mechs. I haven't used it much in tabletop, but I might get a chance to soon, as I have a couple of friends who have expressed interest in playing a game with me! Thanks for the informative video and stay safe out there!
As best I can tell, the second bin of SSRM2 ammo is an artifact of the old Inferno rules in ca. 1990 The Battletech Compendium, in which Infernos were restricted to SRM2s and SSRM2s, rather than standard SRM launchers like in Total Warfare. My group house rules that SSRM launchers can use any ammo available to a standard SRM launcher, but functions as a standard launcher when doing so. We like that it gives at least some utility to the poor old 5J.
One of my earliest loves upon getting into Battletech with the HBS game. Sure, it's not got the most impressive arsenal around, but good lord the Grasshopper just won't die. And with the sheer number of heat sinks on board, you have so much room for activities if you decide to take a few out.
@chewiewookthevindicator5657 oooh, get a Kintaro for the fourth slot in a lance. Little faster than the others, but he's got a cloud of SRMs ready to go.
I love this thing, a mech that has always earned itself in many a time for me. I have experience in it all the video games, but personally I love it in tabletop the most. It both performs as a "brick" that is meant to take all the aggro yet also be where it needs to be with its jump jets, one done so well the 5 medium laser PPC variant got me 2nd place at a tournament, and is one that is important to me as an artist as well - being able to paint it in a viney, swampy overgrown style was my first big paint project and I pulled it off so well. It was the first time something came out just as good in practice as it did in my head, which was huge for my confidence. Love it, and will be the yardstick I compare any other "brick" mechs to
One of my favorites. A good counter part to the 'flying brick' Thunderbolt 5SE. The Grasshopper is my lucha libre of choice. I wish there were more early variants, the MWO Grasshopper GHR-5P is a much better Helm Memory Core upgrade than what we got (endosteel, double heat sinks, 2 PPC, 2 ML, and 2 MPL if you're curious).
@@MrDmitriRavenoff That's a good comparison. The real difference is that all the weapons are in the torso on the MWO Grasshopper. Otherwise its a Warhammer 6D with jump jets.
Was my favorite mech from my first game as a baby nerd. The person teaching me to play was using one against me. I had a Battlemaster. In CityTech. Learned my lesson right quick!
I can only hope none of your charges in the public education system were holding roman candles. That aside, the presence of a CT energy weapon in the Grasshopper happily tickles my inner Super Robot fan.
I just love the Grasshopper. Also one if not the best duelist in 3025. I played many duels in the Grasshopper and brought down everything from a Warhammer 6R over a Victor 9B all up to an Atlas D.
29:07 worth noting that disabling the ppc field inhibitors, is an option under advanced rules, though many (probably rightly) prefer the to-hit penalty. Also worth noting that anyone who stops their mech within LPPC minimum range is also stopping within DFA range. Both are quite kuritan approaches to solving the range problem.
I like the idea of a *Grasshopper* built on an endo steel chassis with two medium lasers on the centerline, one in either arm, an ER PPC in either side torso, and a head-mounted SRM-4 with a ton of ammo under CASE in the right torso. Round it out with sixteen double heat sinks, and you have the perfect machine in which to wander the Inner Sphere in search of your half-brother Danny.
Grasshoppers are a 'mech class that are often overshadowed by flashier designs. But, they are solid Heavy troopers. They are the Wolfhound/Panther and Centurion of Heavies.
I didn’t know about this ‘Mech until I bought the Highlanders ForcePack and it quickly became one of my favorites! Even ran the Gravedigger in a Solaris-themed melee event.
Hello Mech Frog. Happy Holidays from the Hellsport Mech Museum here on Hel, Sheol III, in the Stygia System, and from both the Hellsport Mech Museum and Hellsport Mek Werks. I have run through all our records on the Grasshopper Mech chassis and found just about everything you mentioned in the video file that crossed my desk recently. I forwarded the video to the 'boys' at the Hellsport Mek Werks, which upon some later thought, I probably should not have done. They responded with a variant GHR-5J(GL)of the venerable Mech that I am not sure I agree with. The design sports the Standard 280 rated Fusion Engine yielding a movement rate of 4/6, and the 'usual' 4 Jump Jets. A Standard Gyro, and Standard Internal Structure are 'as per usual' as well. It is, however protected with 12.5 tons of IS-Ferro-Fiberous Armor. The Mech is cooled using 16 Clan-DSHS, granting it a dissipation Index of 32. The weapons load out is almost entirely Standard Tech available during the 4th Succession War Era, other than a single Clan weapon. A single ER PPC is located in the Right Arm, and 4 Standard Medium Lasers are mounted to the Left Arm, Left Torso, Right Torso, and Center Torso mounting 'slots'. The design now goes 'non-standard' (in addition to the Clan Double Heat Sinks) with the addition of more mixed Clan and Inner Sphere technologies. 2 Clan AMS systems are added to the design, one in either of the side torsos, along with a ton of ammo (24 'shots' each) for each AMS in each location (I guess they want to make sure that LRMs and SRMs were never going to be a problem for this Mech variant). In addition, the Mech is outfitted with an IS Guardian ECM Suite (RT), and an IS-Targeting Computer (RT). As said before, the Mech can 'run and gun', as well as 'Jump and Dump' all of it's weaponry without heat issues. In fact, the Heat Dissipation Index of 32 exactly matches the Heat Delta of a full Jump using the Jump Jets, an Alpha Strike with all weapons, AND accounts for the firing of both AMS systems in one 'combat round' of 10 seconds. There is a bit of extra space available in the chassis that one Astech wanted to fill with a pair of simple mechanical dispensers for stuffed plush Mech Toys for children when the unit is used in Urban settings. The weight of which would be negligible and would make the Mech a crowd favorite during parades. Chief Mech Tech Andrews is not sure if to reward the Astech, or assign him to restroom maintenance duties. Personally, I think that having a Mech 'rain down' toys for children is a unique idea, to say the least. I do hope that Santa Urbie finds you in its good favor this holiday season, and who knows? The Mech above might just rain plush toys on you and yours one day. :) Diana McFairlain, Head Mech Tech, Ghost Lions Legions Hellsport Mech Museum Stygian Compact P.S. Your MF variant was well received at the Mek Werks and plans are in motion to build and test the design as soon as workload permits. An early holiday gift to the 'mad boys' of the Mek Werks team, I guess.
Thank you for all the time and effort you put into this video Mechfrog it’s hugely appreciated! I enjoyed the video a lot. Which is hardly surprising since the grasshopper is one of my favorite mechs, I’ve been in love with it ever since it really hit focused on in the Legacy Anthology. It says a lot that basically every variant of this mech got me excited and I thought I’d enjoy playing it. I can’t wait to try out the MF variant on the tabletop although I’m shocked you didn’t take a quick jump brawler of a heavy mech and add plasma cannons. It’s just so obvious.
What makes the Grasshopper special is its combination of high maneuverability and hood heat management. For my part, I'd want to fit a clan xl engine or better, improved jump jets and clan double heat sinks. Might cost a little on the weapons fit, but with 2x clan ERLL and 2x clan MPL, a 70 ton 5/8/8 heat neutral mech is quite possible.
I actually most of the canon variants of the Grasshopper, and even the Grasshopper MF (and I've been informed that 'MF' doesn't stand for what I usually think it does). While I have 2 custom variants, I'm going to only cover the one I created for the CGL mini I found I have. I painted it up for the 2nd Magistracy Highlanders and gave it a unique name: "Falchion". Designated the GHR-FHN, it actually doesn't mount a sword. It retains the standard fusion and 22 single heat sinks - which is still probably more than it needs - and reworks the weapons of the GHR-5J. The ER Large Laser is swapped for an ER Medium Laser, and upgrades the arm-mounted medium lasers to Light PPCs. The head-mounted Streak SRM-2 is retained, as is the Anti-Missile System. 18 heat versus 22 cooling....yeah, it could probably lose 4 of the single heat sinks, though returning the CT ER medium to an ER large would make you wish for them back. Maybe drop one to side-grade the ER medium to a medium pulse? I dunno. Something to think about.
I knew very little about the Grasshopper before this, it was always a 'oh yeah, one of those' sorts of 'Mechs. I can appreciate it a lot more now, might pick one up at some point. Can't go wrong with a CT-mounted Large Laser, right? Replacing the LRM5 with a SRM seems like such an obvious sidegrade I'm surprised it didn't happen more frequently in official variants. Props to the 6K for being the LosTech upgrade the 'Mech deserves (although I'd swap the C3 for an anti-missile system).
The Grasshopper has always held a place in my heart, it may not be my fav heavy (I love my Thunderbolts) but whenever I use it, it serves me well, and it grew my fondness for jump jet maneuverability. It was even the mech I used to get my second kill with (my first was a Exterminator living up to its name and getting a machine gun ammo explosion on a Battlemaster and just destroying the thing). As I used it to chip at a Atlas (along with some back-up fire from a sniping Marauder II I had placed up in some mountains but it soon got bogged down by some crafty Wolverine out on the hunt) and just lay a massive barrage of laser fire right on it after it got it brought to its knees by a crippling shot by the Marauder II before the Wolverine forced it to start falling back. Great memories to this day as I was starting to play the game with my buddies. Plus it was in a pack I got as a gift from a friend so it was one of the first I actually owned (along with my favourite period, the Banshee).
The perfect heavy cavalry mech. Its fairly fast, decently protected, and packs enough punch to be useful against mechs of its size. Its real draw is its ability to scare the wits out of medium mech pilots who cant escape from it
My first grasshopper used the tracks of a disabled tank as a chain whip after local sun flared during game. I had to lock out all but my lrm due to heat spikes and ionized air being a conduit for lightening. Right back atcha... (One of the first official dark ages battles at Psi-con in Virginia beach in mid 90s) I had smoke loaded. I'd fire ahead of me and jump in close enough to slap an enemy silly. Then stomp them once down. Took out all the cold weapon mechs of enemy. Only my team's archer and whitworth took out more mechs that tourney. Only time I fired my laser was next to a thug's head that had moved to grapple with me. Chancy as hell, but GM/author was impressed and allowed me to use dangerous storms to my benifit. Thug got nailed in head by lightening and I only shutdown for the turn from proximity. Basically heat and ppc secondary effects. Best kill of match went to a Stinger Solaris mod (tsm/industrial armor/improved jump jets, reinforced limbs and handheld shield) Two hovertanks were doing long straffing runs at top speed. Stinger got a lock on pathing and relayed this to archer via slave unit all scouts had. Stinger did a running jump into back of legs of enemy highlander. Pilot failed roll. In same phase of initiative, archer laid a pattern of mines forcing tanks to swerve right into downed highlander. The gm ruled that everyone not in smoke or shutdown by lightening witnessed this explosion. They missed the fascam 20 fields though... 3 light mechs legged rushing to avenge death of command mech. Stinger rightfully retreated for better chances... it lost 3/4 of its armor in that attack and subsequent explosions. We won 36-8 and our team was winner out of 3 tables running that battle. Avg short range shot was +3 before any movement or heat mods were added in. Our team including slave units in scouts and fireteams paid off bigtime. Also going more daka than pew-pew on our mandatory 12 industrial mech mod/conversions. My smoke didn't last long in storm winds. But did add to fog and rain effects with IR opaque fog. Enough to let me use my surprise cq tactics and improvised weapon. 😊
CANNOT believe it took you this long to do my favorite heavy mech of all time. Been my favorite since TRO 3025's first release (yes I have the original version with the switched art for the Ost mechs)
"A middle schooler with a roman candle". I will see that and raise: "A rural Iowa high schooler with a pound of stolen potassium during the spring thaw."
My favorite recon and guerilla mech, however I am not a big fan of having a missile launcher next to my cockpit hence why I prefer having either lasers or a TAG designator for artillery strikes which makes it the perfect spotter for my Harassers or Strike missile boats
If I was to change anything on the Grasshopper 5H, I see two options: A) Switch the LRM5 to an SRM4 for better synergy with the medium lasers. B) Retain the LRM5 but use specialty ammo like inferno.
Long long ago we played alot of 3025, I really liked the 5H, but my Field refit was dropping the LRM5 and 1t, and adding 2ML and 1 HS. The refit rules were +/- 2 small items or +/- 1 Large item. It really added flexibility up close with firing 6ML for 18 heat with jumping/running, or 5+LL if standing still. Maybe my most used mech in TT
@@senordos13yep that’s why hot loading the LRM (which would make the LRM explode on a crit but removes the minimum range penalty) is unlikely to effect the survivability of the mech. Because the ammo (located in the torso) is likely to kill the introtech mech one way or the other if hit. (CASE is not available at that tech level) the ammo is already crit padded as much as possible without a major refit. (You only hit the ammo on a 6 lower roll)
Again, an excellent Video about a good Mech, I like the Grasshopper. Being the second heaviest jumper was an advantage back in the days of the TRO 3025.
If something needed flattening, well... the Grasshopper wasn't it. That's what Warhammers are for. However if you wanted to keep Dekker out of trouble, stick him in one of these bad boys.
One of the best mechs in 3025! Keeping the same movement profile makes it a little bit longer in the tooth as we get into the later eras, so I think the role needs to change somewhat from wanting to mix it up directly to something a bit more medium range. The SNPPCs fit that role exactly, which the 7K very neatly slots into.
Another smash hit from the number one Battletech Hiphop Country Fusion artist on TH-cam. Have you done the Exterminator? I'm finding that mech to be a lot of fun, oddly enough.
Always a fan of this one, had some good luck with these in urban combat acting as a big boy back stabber with some snubs and an mrm to just decimate backsides of upto lighter assaults.
The Grasshopper is one of my all time favorite heavies in terms of sheer performance. It's one of the few machines I generally am not tempted to tinker with.
I spent some time considering how to use the 5N variant in the past. That PPC is actually a really good addition. Yes it has extra range, which is nice, but more importantly its heat output is close to neutral when jumping and firing 3 of the 5 MLas. 3xML are torso-mounted, 2 are arms, which means you'll rarely need to fire the non-torso mounted weapons. From a damage perspective I almost never punch with a 5H because I feel like I'm giving up too much damage for an already undergunned mech. With the PPC, you just roll the die anyways. Using 5xML instead of the PPC is only for times when you need to cool down, under the PPC's min but not in melee range, or when you have the perfect kill shot and are willing to risk a kick over the punches.
Well backed up, the Grasshopper is lethal. Had a game where it charged a warhammer that kept missing, then landed behind for a KO. Very well balanced design.
The grasshopper 6k is underrated by a lot of people that play very open games of battletech. As an broken ground Calvary mech it’s not bringing the big guns but instead is punishing things like light mech flankers or pressuring long range mechs that struggle to fight back under 3 hexes where it thrives
As for G-hopper builds... Arms were clan er flamers and er sm pulses. RT/LT got er mdm lasers clan. CT got snubbie +cap + case II PWS and improved JJ 15 DHS only though 280 light Gear - clan active probe and angel suite (LT) Reinforced legs/actuators. Head got Mml5 with utility ammo in (rt) with case 2 too. Compact cockpit clan for space and ton saved. Needed for probe n ecm. Fooker could really jump into trouble and get out faster. 😊 Was a barn betty though. $$
70 tons of snap kicking, fist smashing, DFA goodness. What's not to love? I mean, sure a hatchet would be nice, but as I mentioned in the Hatchetman comments, there weren't canon rules for those when the original TRO 3025 came out.
In my MegaMek 2028 campaign I run a modified 5H. I stripped the LLaser and LRM5 to add four more mediums, a small, half a ton of armor and three heatsinks. Eight Medium Lasers is pretty nasty during that time period, as an alpha strike only adds the movement heat.
In my mission to use "bad" mechs in MW5, I spent some time in a Grasshopper. My best mission saw me maul an Enforcer, after clipping his its arm off with my lasers. I gave the same treatment to an UrbanMech, then got into a fist fight with a Centurion, and won. Meanwhile, my brothers finished the mission. The Grasshopper can be a lot of fun, provided you get it early, like the Quickdraw.
My go to lance for years was a Hunchback 4P(Yes, I’m a dedicated Swaybacker and I’ll fight to the death for it), a Dervish 6M, a Guillotine 4L, and a Grasshopper 5N. As a medium lance, I don’t think you can ask for better. If you like it up close and physical, a Grasshopper is a great choice. My buddy played three Awesome 8Qs parked on high ground, and with my brawling in-your-face lance, we would clean up on tournament games. Didn’t matter what we fought, with all my jump capable mechs I’d position the enemy lances between me and all 9 of my friends PPC’s. No where to run, no where to hide. Glorious destruction.
I love, love, love the Grasshopper. It tends to be my personal command mech in campaign play if I can get one. The 5H is a decent match for more powerfully armed mechs with XL engines down the timeline, I've played games where one of my 5H Grasshoppers gets into duels with Clan mediums and heavies and manage to scrape by with very close wins just due to the durability of the 'Hopper. The Gravedigger variant is my favorite because it does something that none of the other variants do by giving the 'Hopper TSM. TSM punches or kicks from a Grasshopper are wicked and the Gravedigger is sufficiently well-armed to pound anything in it's weight class to scrap if it is able to fight in tight confines. I do sincerely wish for an ilClan era variant with a light engine or Clan XL to take the mech to a 5/8/5, maybe throw a small MML launcher in the head and then ride with snub nose PPCs and medium lasers. That sounds like a fun, in-character variant, even better for me if that one would also sport TSM. A Grasshopper running at 9 hexes with TSM just sounds delightful to me.
I love the grasshopper my one hope is an ilclan variant thats a more typical one but with improved jumpjets, rather then the only ones with them being the weirdo ones with torso mounted cockpits

One of my earliest loves upon getting into Battletech with the HBS game. Sure, it's not got the most impressive arsenal around, but good lord the Grasshopper just won't die. And with the sheer number of heat sinks on board, you have so much room for activities if you decide to take a few out.
Because its a beautiful zombie of a bully mech. The PPC one is favorite.
No weak LRM5 and dumb ammo there to weaken the thing.
Heh. Glad someone likes that one.
The Grasshopper: More than just a Guillotine with an LRM.
Indeed...
Pair them together and you have CQB heaven! Then add a Hunchback…
Sounds like they made it a Flying Warhammer.
@@MrDmitriRavenoff That's a good comparison. The real difference is that all the weapons are in the torso on the MWO Grasshopper. Otherwise its a Warhammer 6D with jump jets.
Such perfect timing. Cheers Amphibimech.
Enjoy! Have a great week!
Just a very solid heavy cavalry 'mech. You gotta love it.
100% agreed.
Sweet jebus, I love this mech. It is great at brawling and just generally reliable.
I love it
My favorite disco death machine
Good times had by all.
Good points.
Love its look, Love its firepower. Never did I think that a grasshopper could be a dangerous beast. But here it is, that 70t monster coming for you...
The Grasshopper is probably my favorite mech that rarely makes the cut when I'm revising lists.
It's usually a solid pick.
Hippity Hoppity, one of the best 3025 heavies is here!
Huzzah!
Snub-Nose PPCs? Okay this mech and that variant is going on the favorites list.
I'm sure it'll be fun.
Great video! Looking forward to more videos.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!

P.S. Your MF variant was well received at the Mek Werks and plans are in motion to build and test the design as soon as workload permits. An early holiday gift to the 'mad boys' of the Mek Werks team, I guess.
Headcanon: Grasshopper pilots are advised in their vehicle manual to shout "wheeeeee" whilst using jump jets.
Thanks a ton!
It sounds like you had a really good time with it!
The perfect heavy cavalry mech. Its fairly fast, decently protected, and packs enough punch to be useful against mechs of its size. Its real draw is its ability to scare the wits out of medium mech pilots who cant escape from it
Damn, the paint job on the red 'hopper with the half grey torso and head is gorgeous 🥰.
My first grasshopper used the tracks of a disabled tank as a chain whip after local sun flared during game.
I had to lock out all but my lrm due to heat spikes and ionized air being a conduit for lightening. Right back atcha...
(One of the first official dark ages battles at Psi-con in Virginia beach in mid 90s)
I had smoke loaded.
Best kill of match went to a Stinger Solaris mod (tsm/industrial armor/improved jump jets, reinforced limbs and handheld shield)
Two hovertanks were doing long straffing runs at top speed.
I'm glad we could finally cover it.
@@MechanicalFrog Saving some great ones for later is good, actually...rather than doing all the total classics in one block.
You had me at head missiles.
There is no artistic interpretation or mini of the Grasshopper that isnt a winner. Love that bugeye head
It's solid all around.
If I was to change anything on the Grasshopper 5H, I see two options:
A) Switch the LRM5 to an SRM4 for better synergy with the medium lasers.
B) Retain the LRM5 but use specialty ammo like inferno.
I'm fine with both of these plans.
You can always hot load the LRM, a head crit hit was always likely to be a death sentence, and you die if the ammo gets hit anyway.
@@Ruggedtoaster only 1 open location in the head for the LRM. Ammo has to go in torso.
Glad you enjoyed it
If something needed flattening, well... the Grasshopper wasn't it. That's what Warhammers are for. However if you wanted to keep Dekker out of trouble, stick him in one of these bad boys.
Well put.
Cool bug Fact's
In Battletech 2018, the GHR-5H has 7 energy and 6 support hardpoints. Every second you're not running, 13 lasers are hopping closer.
Once you get rid of the LRM and ammo like the 5N it is an amazing zombie mech that just won’t leave you alone.
Another smash hit from the number one Battletech Hiphop Country Fusion artist on TH-cam. Have you done the Exterminator? I'm finding that mech to be a lot of fun, oddly enough.
Grasshopper is love Grasshopper is life
Why do we love the grasshopper? Because they’re a pretty tasty bug
Because there is an energy boat variant with a PPC, very nice.
I love the Grasshopper. It's one of the best heavy mechs of all time. The movement, the armor, and the reliable weapon systems make it a deadly force.
Always a fan of this one, had some good luck with these in urban combat acting as a big boy back stabber with some snubs and an mrm to just decimate backsides of upto lighter assaults.
It seems that many have had really good luck with our friend the Hopper...
The 5J. When you will retire or die before needing to reload that poxy Streak 2
Because heavies jumping is awesome!
Fact Check: True.
The Grasshopper is one of my all time favorite heavies in terms of sheer performance. It's one of the few machines I generally am not tempted to tinker with.
Favorite thing to do with this mech is to pair it with the VSPL. -3 to shooting? Oh yes.
Not a bad idea...
Using 5xML instead of the PPC is only for times when you need to cool down, under the PPC's min but not in melee range, or when you have the perfect kill shot and are willing to risk a kick over the punches.
a beautiful machine
I am a simple man. I see MechFrog video, I click.
Mayby one day you will provide us with Marshal...
Some day...
I love the Grasshopper . For you , and the math wizard Mini-frog , I thank you .
Thanks a lot.
As for G-hopper builds...
Arms were clan er flamers and er sm pulses.
RT/LT got er mdm lasers clan.
CT got snubbie +cap + case II
PWS and improved JJ
15 DHS only though
280 light
Gear - clan active probe and angel suite (LT)
Reinforced legs/actuators.
Head got Mml5 with utility ammo in (rt) with case 2 too.
Compact cockpit clan for space and ton saved. Needed for probe n ecm.
Fooker could really jump into trouble and get out faster. 😊
Was a barn betty though. $$
Happy Monday!
Hop to it!
My Introtech gateway to Dark Age Jade Falcon perfection.
Grasshopper is a classic hit and run heavy, I respect anyone who makes something like that over 55t
patience grasshopper
I really like this mech. It's really cool-looking, and consistent, too.
Wonder if the MF edition will have plasma weaponry...
Gotcha this time.
I like using Thunder or smoke rounds in the LRM 5 if I have to use a standard Grasshopper. It's a great mech on anything that isn't open terrain.
Love me a good grasshopper
They're all good grasshoppers... except maybe the 7X
Never had a bad time using a grasshopper. Plus it's good buddies with Urbanmechs so it gets brownie points there too
My go to lance for years was a Hunchback 4P(Yes, I’m a dedicated Swaybacker and I’ll fight to the death for it), a Dervish 6M, a Guillotine 4L, and a Grasshopper 5N.
Sorry, 5H, not 5N
Imagine if they swapped two of light PPCs of the 8K for three Medium Pulse Lasers.
Oh the humanity...
I love the grasshopper my one hope is an ilclan variant thats a more typical one but with improved jumpjets, rather then the only ones with them being the weirdo ones with torso mounted cockpits
You know what the Grasshopper is crying out for? A Streak LRM 5 and a Targeting Computer.
Heh.
