It's really crazy to think of all the things this bird's seen. When Cookie hatched, Adolf Hitler had just become Chancellor of Germany. When he was 6, WW2 began. When he was 11, the first atomic bomb was dropped and WW2 ended. When he was 24, the Space Race kicked off. When he was 30, JFK was assassinated. When he was 36, humanity landed a man on the moon. When he was 48, the first IBM PC rolled off the assembly line. When he was 58, the USSR collapsed and the US launched Desert Storm. When he was 68, 9/11 happened. When he was 75, the first African American was elected President. When he was 78, Osama bin Laden was killed. He's seen 8 popes and 13 presidents. Considering all that, I'd say he lived a very long and very good life indeed.
I used to visit Cookie around once a month for years. He seemed to remember me; or maybe that was just my wishful thinking. Most visitors passed by his cage without ever noticing him, so I am thankful for the zookeepers who interacted with Cookie and took such good care of him. I was especially touched by the scene in this video where they played peekaboo with him, which I also used to do. He would get excited and raise his beautiful head feathers and “talk” to me as well. I miss him to this very day.
I grew up at Brookfield Zoo. I grew up with cookie. From school field trips, two personal trips frequently taken. I spent a lifetime at the zoo. trust me when I say cookie touched many. but cookies touched me. Thank you for the Memories. Goodbye my sweet friend.

HOW CAN I CRY SO MUCH ABOUT A BIRD I NEVER KNEW TILL A FEW MINUTES AGO? He's so adorable. At least his memory is being kept alive by these postings. We wish animals lived forever! Cookie did make it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the oldest known parrot, so he did live a very long and fulfilling life!

Wow, even though I just learned about Cookie after reading oldest living Animals, that made me very sad. At least Cookie lived a long and happy life, and that is what you would want for any pet.

This is outstanding... Most pet owners own parrots for 9 or 12 years, even though a parrot's lifespan is 70-100 years old. But this parrot's owner (or owners) took amazing care of cookie.
Cookie received the same level of fantastic care that all of our animals here at Brookfield Zoo receive! His long life is a testament to the dedication of his animal care staff.
So sad! I'm sure he brought happiness, laughter and joy to thousands of people. My heart goes out to all the people that cared for him on a regular basis. What a loss. Rest in peace, sweet boy.
