One of your best videos so far. I like how you bring us with you through the problems and you and you give us the real concern without acting. Not afraid to hide anything. Good job
That took a lot of guts, your first solo passage! Winds waves currents and some boat issues But you bundled it calm and accomplished your sailing abilities and you know your boat better Bravo 👏
Huub, you did a great job on your solo sail!! Remember, your dream may not be someone else's dream and thats ok. Live your life with no regrets. Thanks for sharing this experience!
Congratulations, Huub! True bravery is being scared to death and doing it anyway. So proud of you. You are a tough and honest guy. I've been following you for a long time now. I remember that van breaking down so many times and how you handled it. :) I hope Cuba is good to you. But they have so little, I hope it is not hard for you to get food and supplies. Your best video yet...you showed us what sailing is like when you are new to it. I'm sure Dirkje is relieved to see that you are safe and sound. Please stay safe.
Joseph Campbell wrote about "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" over 70 years ago. It's about the myth narrative of the hero's journey. After separation comes initiation. You are on your way to to becoming a "monomythic" badass! Keep livin' it with gratitude Huub! ;)
You might want to move your spare fuel containers to middle of the boat to shift weight back so your bow doesn't dip down so much in heavier seas. During passages you could also detach your anchor and store it in the stern to reduce bow weight and reduce the slamming. Then put the anchor back up front when you are approaching your destination. Note: Waves get bigger in shallower water.
I give you so much credit for doing your 1st alone sail, and dealing with having to go into the water to check the issue with the propellor...I had hoped you would have tied a line to yourself which was attached to the boat to make sure you would remain able to get back on board in case there was an issue with that...yet so happy to see that you did do the process successfully. I look forward to see what your Cuba visit is like. I had a chance to visit there a number of years ago....lots of poverty for sure...so hope your boat and all are really safe.
Thank you so much Aome! I attached a line on the side of the boat which I was holding. I was afraid that if I would have tied myself to the boat that when the boat was going from left to right and the rope would get stuck, it might pull me closer to the boat and hit my head. As I could keep up with the boats floating speed this seemed the safest option.
Heartbreak is horrible. Thankfully it will ease with time and moving forward and oh man Huub...you are doing an amazing job moving forward! I have no doubt that your future will include some great adventures, fun, beautiful days, and greater loves! 🙏💙
Just saw your channel and immediately joined after listening to your 1st-5minutes into the video. Jerry cans on the foredeck at sea is not a good thing. Keep weight out of the ends of the boat. The boat will sail much better and you will be much safer. Stow the anchor on passages. Congratulations and enjoy the rewards of all your hard work.
I like your simple plan, especially when you’re learning ‘solo sail’...mitigate and stay safe. That’s a good motto and worth its weight in gold or life. 👏👏👏
I've been sailing for 40 years, man you have done some daring shit. But being Solo your choices are left to you. You have guts my man for your first solo, well done. Your girl left a good man,it's too bad she didn't think of you as being as important as her friends. Your independence, and self confidence is admirable. It is a dangerous thing to sail on a Lee shore, open water is safer. All your tanks on your foredeck are an incredible amount of weight. I'm surprised it didn't affect your steering , especially making the bow dig into the waves. Congratulations you've done a remarkable sail ,for tying up about only twice ,I would think that was your simplistic task.
Absolutely fantastic video my friend. Love the way u took us on the adventure with u. I’m so proud of u and hope u r also very proud of yourself. Way to go

What a great accomplishment Huub. Well done. A little trick I always do, tie a heavy string from the anchor to the bow pulpit as a safety. We would also put a rolling hitch on the anchor with another rope. The anchor snubber hooks often fall off when not under tension. This can be a big hazard if it gets away from you. The anchor could potentially bash a hole in your boat if hanging free in waves. Try modelling clay to plug hawse pipes while offshore. The stuff is cheap and it fills the hole easily and stays in place. You can re-use it too if you just keep it in a ziplock baggie.
Well done Huub you should be very proud of yourself, pushing yourself is the only way to find out what your capable of and often you suprise youself of just whaty you can achieve.
You did it. Sailing alone is a bit scary, but you can conquer the fear. Now you can fix the things that need fixing and go anywhere. Or maybe hang out in Cuba for awhile.
I think you needed this trip to prove to yourself that you could depend upon yourself and you did a great job! There’s so much difference in the person doing Solo sails and the one who started out in these videos, when something goes wrong now, you know where to start looking....You should be proud of all you’ve accomplished.

Love the happy moments the dolphins jumping with you on the way, and then the clouds, the squall, the intensity and exhaustion. Bravo! For learning and for making it work on your own! Great video ! I like your style. I think your boat handles the ocean very well. It's all about that "fear factor" No matter how bad things get , don't ever abandon the boat ! To many boats have been abandoned and then found later on floating by themself ! Cheers
Yes. Lots of fear. Dont have a life raft so definitely not planning on abandoning the boat haha. And thanks, i dont have much to compare to but she seemed to like the ocean!
You’re one brave Dude! Congrats Huub! I would have had a waterproof jumpsuit and boots! Drag some lines in the water behind you all the time! Auto inflating harness too! Now you know what you need to fix for next time! alles van die beste!
Good challenge sailing for you well done. You might want to move your batteries. The bilge is not a good location. Maybe good to keep the weight low but if you take on water it will short out and you can loose all power.
Seven days for a first solo is not a bad effort mate good on ya. lee cloths on either side of your stern rails will keep you a bit drier and less wind to deal with in the cockpit and so easy to make. You could take your anchor off on long passages and store it below , that way the chain would be all the way inside the locker so you can make the opening waterproof...I'd be taking those batteries out of the bilge because that's just asking for trouble you don't want to deal with , anywhere would be better.
I do not think the problem was you nor the boat, I think it was the itinerary, sailing against the trade winds is very difficult. The nice thing is that you made it and the future will be easier as that you now know what to expect. Cheers.
Yes! I bought the boat in the wrong location for sure. Can't wait to be out of this "wrong direction" itinerary, but it seems it's gonna take some time...

You can re-use it too if you just keep it in a ziplock baggie.
modeling clay seems a good idea. Or use a plastic bag or something maybe...

Goed gedaan man.... ! Goeie filmpjes, eerlijk en echt vermakelijk. 👍👍
