Huub, you are doing OK, learning fast! Cruising the UK, Ireland and Brittany coast with my Dad, 50 years ago, we used wind vane self steering. No batteries or circuit board to worry about, just simple preventative maintenance. It's a top rate option!
Thanks Rob. It's so nice that you are watching. I remember you watching the big channels when we met in Kazakhstan. So I must do something right now haha. I will learn about the windvane soon !
First rule of thumb when it comes to soldering. Get yourself a butane powered soldering iron for boat work. That way you don't need power to do soldering. Second, all blade connectors should be connected-bedded in dielectric grease, super lube or tef-gel and in that order of what you have on hand. All blade connectors should be cleaned if tarnished. (DONT BE SHY WITH THE GREASE) It stops the salt from getting into the contacts (male & female). Something I think I noticed is that your current auto pilot PCB controller does not have conformal coating. Thats :S bad very bad. Whatever you upgrade to for logic controlled auto pilot ensure that the motor system control and logic board system have conformal coating. It's a waste of $$ if they don't. Another aspect of the auto pilot that could be failing, is the angle indicator for the rudder if you have one. That could have a poor connection or a failing internal hardware. I would assume wire connections always before anything else. As I have stated multi times in the past, one drop of water can F.... 3' of small gauge wire over time. Hence, I'm very big on marine grade heat shrink connectors and electronics grease(s) as described before. A future upgrade your going to want, is a nice inverter real marine inverter, I would suggest 10,000 watt or 10amp at 110Vac MINIMUM. Then you can setup a real outlet on the boat for powering devices. I would suggest getting one that is a High freq. but they are way more expensive new (maybe someone can gift you one??). The less expensive one's have really heavy power conversion power wasting transformers but they work very well. Auto pilot: Two forms of auto pilot in working condition is always a good thing to have. For all that I know about boats, wind vane auto pilots I don't know much of anything about nor does my sailboat have one. Side note and your call. Check out (LOVE MEI) phone cases, its very hard to damage a phone when using those cases. FYI only purchase from the love mei case web site. There IP is pirated badly. If you Get to PR (Puerto Rico) I suggest checking out, Camuy caves guided, and Cave of the winds self-guide BRING extra flashlights on that one. Also get yourself some tamarind & canepa fruit. Canepa's do not LAST long FYI even in cold storage. People would LOVE >:) TOO see your reaction to tamarinds especially if you have never had them before. TRUST ME!!!

Good for you trying to fix your auto pilot. Figure out your wind vane and put it to work. They are simple instruments. I had no desire to stop at Cuba. I have friends who escaped from there and hearing them tell how rough it was gave me the idea it was not a vacation destination. You can't find parts if something breaks. It does not make sense to go there. There are so many nice places you can go with no hassel where the people are kind & friendly. It's time to move along to find a better place. You deserve better. Take care. Cheers, S/V Cork ~ Texas
I am impressed with your docking skills and I am exhausted watching you deal with one problem after another when you really should just be enjoying your journey.
Hi Chuck, either I attract problems, or it's just that this lifestyle has a lot of problems. Or maybe both... At least I always enjoy that I am free. Although I wake up between 5 and 6 most days, it's generally without alarm and only so early cuz I'm excited to go somewhere new!
Wow Huub they sure seem to be a little uptight in Cuba 🤨 I think you will find Jamaica more hospitable. Hope you get the autopilot working soon. Sailing seems like a lot of work with a lot of rules but the freedom you must feel in the open water must be incredible. Thanks for another great video and I wish you safe passage to Jamaica.
It definitely is a lot of work! I like it though. It will also get easier in other countries where more sailors are and shorter distances to travel. Im just starting out in the wrong place on earth!
You have the patience of a Saint with these Cuban authorities Huub! I hope that you are able to figure out your Wind-vane, get a crewman to help you out and get out of Cuba where if they don’t want your money then heck with them, Huub!
Enjoy all posts of your first time exploring South coast of Cuba. Looking forward to your videoing passage to Jamaica. These are experiences you will always carry with you. I applaud you.
Maybe you don't need new solder on that connection. Perhaps you can re-flow it by holding the hot spoon on it? Also, you might want to buy a product called "DeoxIT" to have on hand in your boat. It works very well to clean and prevent oxidation and corrosion on electrical contacts.
Take off the tip from the 110v soldering iron hold in with pliers in a stove flame, then you can use it to solder a short time. The lighter has too little heat or it takes forever to heat the tip. A spoon is no good but any copper part that is att least as heavy as a soldering iron tip and has a useful shape can be a soldering iron. I once used a copper pin from a belt buckle with a kerosine stove to make an emergency soldering iron. The problem with the autopilot is likely some bad contact or dry solder joint. Check the rear oft the circuit and closely inspect al solder islands (with a magniying glas if you have). A very hair thin copper or tin strain could also make a short somewhere between traces os components. Also check the copper traces on the board for corrosion. Do not brush or touch traces on the board when it is powered! The thing you brushed is an trimpotentiometer, it is like the volume knop on a stereo with a slot for a small screwdriver, they can easily develop bad contacts inside, on a stereo it makes the scraping noises turning upp and down the volume. Some contact cleaning spray and moving the potentometer upp and down (remember where it was!) could solve that problem (at least for a while). If you have a multimeter you can measure the potmeter resistance and see if it alters normally if you slightly alter its setting. I would definitely fix the wind vane self steering so you do not need to rely on a scetchy AP so much. Maybe Sailing Umas video on installing one can help th-cam.com/video/WvyTx6xJ0qs/w-d-xo.html

I really enjoyed seeing Trinidad Huub. So sad though to see the locals selling a few items to earn just a little...a dollar earned could make the difference to eat or not to eat that day. Life seems hard there and being constantly stressed changes people over time. They may not be able to have a welcoming or friendly mind when always worrying about how to feed their families, get clean water, and items they need to survive...not exactly sure but I hope their lives somehow improve soon. Stay safe Huub! 💙
It is a lot easier to have a tiller than a wheel on an Alberg 30, if the autopilot fails! Tilller goes between your legs. I did a 550 mile coastal trip on my A30 without autopilot, but I only had one overnight pasaage (which tired me out). "Sheet to tiller" worked Ok to use the head or prepare a meal, but I haven't been able to get more than 10 minutes out of that arrangement without having to nudge the tiller and correct course. So don't worry about missing out on "sheet to tiller" because you have wheel steering. Eventually, I would like a wind vane.
Yeah John, i also saw you need to be more professional than i am for sheet to tiller. I will soon try out my navik windvane! They are used pretty cheap actually. But its nice to have a good electric one too. Sleeps better knowing close to shore it wont change course if wind changes...
Well, the autofocus on your cam has problems too :). Was in Trinidad 5 years ago. With a car from Havana. What a great city Trinidad is!! Safe travels Huub.
You do great videos Huub. Looking forward to your trip to Jamaica! There are not many videos available to watch on TH-cam on cruising Jamaica. Interested to see what kind of anchorages there are. Great improvisation with the autopilot!
Have you heard of 'sheet to tiller' steering? Take a line from the boom, round a block, to the tiller, then use a bungee from tiller to gunwale. It takes some messing about but works
Humans are so interesting. Cubans have been in search of better lives and prosperity for decades yet here they are, pushing cruisers and tourists away with ridiculous irrational nonsense rules. Glad you shared this video Huub. It definitely got my mind off of taking my boat to Cuba in the future after the ban is lifted for private boats.

Hi You asked for people to tell you why they are watching your adventures. To be honest I much preferred watching you build the cabin that I thought was amazing. I therefore felt really bad for you when you had to stop and I have continued to follow you. I am impressed by your work ethics and principles. Watching you on the boat leaves me totally stressed! There are so many things that have gone sour with your boat but it has been an amazing school for you to come to grips with nearly every inch of it. I really hope you stay safe. It all looks so hostile to me at times and seems so dangerous to be doing it alone. I hope you are enjoying the experience in spite of all the hassle. Otherwise I think you should go back to building. Be happy!
Thanks the man, for your answer. I do enjoy sailing a lot more than building, even though building made a lot more money. but i prefer to do what I like. Anyways, it's mostly because I was in countries that were not that friendly. That will change soon!
@@HuubVlogs Hi again and sorry but I don't check my gmail that often since my day to day mail account is with yahoo. I am still amazed at your courage in the face of the problems you face and I feel your frustration with people and their stupid desire to control everyone and everything. I hope you get your autopilot fixed or find a more trusty one. I still feel totally stressed each time I see you getting into your dingy and lifting that heavy motor over. Wouldn't you be safer if you had a life jacket on for such risky operations and one on the motor in case things went bad and it went over? The most I've sailed was last summer on lake Erie when we went from Presque Isle in Pennsylvania about half way to the Canadian/US border in the middle of the lake. It was a lot of fun and I'd love to do more but not sure I'd enjoy what you are doing. I'm sure you are an inspiration to many so keep doing what you do and stay safe. Paul
Besides your self-steering windvane on the back of your boat, have you ever tried 'sheet-to-wheel" steering? It should be more accurate than your auto-pilot, once you set it up and adjust it for weather helm...
Look, I like Desiree & Jordan (Project Atticus). I like Gone With the Wynns. But I freaking LOVE this dude! Hands down, the best sailing video on TH-cam. Keep going Bruh!!
I have a Catalina 30 on a lake in Arizona. We probably have the most reliable weather patterns on the planet. I am terrified of leaving and returning to my slip. And that’s on a Tuesday afternoon in the daylight. My boat has an incomprehensible prop walk. Unless you sail, It’s hard to appreciate what you’re doing!! I’m inspired to sail and adventure more! Thanks, my friend!!
@@tedwall4988 tell me about it. My full keel does not reverse to port. Wherever the steering wheel is, only reverses to starboard. Slight advantage, docks in these countries are not full with boats like when i was in the USA.

Huub, I agree, it's time to move on. While Cuba is oddly appealing, I worry about the control the government holds over people. Please be safe while you're there.
It has got to be a faulty connection. Electronic circuits either work or they don't. Also, make sure there is no metallic objects (other than Aluminum and Stainless Steel) in the vicinity of the controller which will affect the magnetic compass. It cannot be the motor , it's the controller that takes the decision to turn based on a faulty information. Cheers

Hi Huub! I ran across your TH-cam channel right when you started your sailboat adventure and I’ve been watching every episode since! I had a idea after seeing your issues with autopilot and some of the other equipment problems you’ve had. For us fans, we might have a replacement autopilot controller or other equipment you need to replace that we could send to you OR we might want to buy a new one and send to you, but we don’t know exactly what you would want. I know you have to be in a country where we could send it to you, but it sounds like Jamaica might be a place we could send it to. I just don’t know what equipment you are most in need of or exactly what brand and model you would want or need.
Hi Brian, thats so kind of you. I have an aurohelm 3000. I'm getting some stuff that i really need togetjer at a friend in San Diego who will send it to dominican republic. As i need time to get it together and i think its one of the next locatioms. He still has an autohelm 4.000, only the drive unit. Also old, but might be good enough. Should work on the autohelm 3000 motor. One day I'll buy the raymarina evolution ev 100. But thats 1700 bucks. While my autohelm, it might not be as good, but a spare motor is like 100 bucks and a spare drive unit is findable on swap meets. As long as i can keep this working, its a lot cheaper!

Hello Huub, I still enjoy your adventures. It's a nice distraction from the warcrap here in Europe. Do you have a good contact cleaner to help combat electrical problems?
Dude you need a wind-vane steering system as a backup. Most boats have them. There is a youtube video out there that shows you how to use your front sail in place of the expensive windvane by hooking up directly to your rudder steering arm.
Huub, we've chatted a little on Facebook, my name is mikel bentley, I'm leaving keywest next week headed to the Bahamas, hope to see you around . I've not had an autopilot handsteering can be very exausting...
What would have happened if you wouldn’t have been able to avoid that massive cargo ship. What if your old engine suddenly stopt working? I know, what are the odds? But your auto pilot also malfunctioned out of the blue, so I hope you stay close to the shore man, stay save if you even read this
Hi Dennis, that cargo ship would have been 'the end' probably! If engine stops i got sails. Thing is, i rather live with a bit of risk than die without having taken some of them...
@@HuubVlogs I get it, I am just a little worried about you man, due to the condition of your ship in general and especially as a fellow Dutch guy on its own. It seems you are going from one mechanical issue to another and I just wish you a generous Patreon so you would be able to overhaul your whole ship with some proper equipment. But at the same time I realize that is quit something to ask for considering no one forced you to go sailing and take that risk. Well I wish you all safe miles and keep hoping for that patreon. Stay safe!
For my mobile home/car I always carry electronic cleaning spray and WD-40. At first sign of any problem or every 5 years or so I open up the products and spray the inside with the cleaning spray and let it evaporate and then I spray WD-40 on the electronics (for protection) AND LET IT DRY FOR 12 HOURS....before I put everything back together again and use it (wet WD-40 are conductive, dry ditto is not). That usually takes care of 90% of all the faulty electronics, due to excessive damp that builds short cuts/conductivity were it's not supposed to be. Don't know about that autopilot though, seems to have given in due to old age. Worth a try though. Good luck and I look forward to the Jamaica sail. Never understood why people are drawn to Cuba.....it's just annoyingly different and stupid. I feel sad for the people who have to live under those political conditions :)

So sorry that you're having so many difficulties Huub!
Hopefully things will get better for you soon.
🍃🤗🍃
Haha i think i just have to accept difficulties as a part of my life
@@HuubVlogs
we all do Huub...without difficulties, we wouldnt appreciate good times enough.
Stay safe.
thats the important thing!

😄 I don't think he's having difficulties. I think he's having normal's. lol
@@berinslaptop absolutely! Life is never perfect.
CUBA! my people.
Look, I like Desiree & Jordan (Project Atticus). I like Gone With the Wynns. But I freaking LOVE this dude! Hands down, the best sailing video on TH-cam. Keep going Bruh!!
I love your comment Ted!
Cuba?!! Didn't know tourists can walk about freely!!👍🏼
Ha. Why wouldn't they?
It must be the module that activates the motor, could be the reason why the problem is occurring. Take care out on the water!
I think some kind of interference
darling i would have helped you sail, hope all goes well. You a lovely chap
Your videos are awesome. I miss Jippa.
Head for San Andras there are lots of good yachts there that will help you 😎😎😎
Thanks for the Cuba insight!
Our Country is heading in that direction if we don't wake up!
Thanks Marie!
Lol
So much for Cuba. I'd leave pronto.
Ya Huub let´s get some hot crew on the boat for some fun!! Get over to San Blas and to San Andres
Hi which site do u you use to find crew? Enjoy the vlog a lot. Safe travels Huub
😊
Huub, I agree, it's time to move on. While Cuba is oddly appealing, I worry about the control the government holds over people. Please be safe while you're there.
Governments in all countries have huge control over people. Why worry about Cuba?
Are you going to be coming to the states?
Cuba is a pain in the ass, everything is hard there
That boat seems like a swiss cheese (those with a lot of holes)!😄
Luckily haven't found a hole yet!
Cheers
Yeah indeed. It sounds like something must interfere somehow
I don't think I will ever be going to cuba. The officials and some people in certain places seem really unfriendly.. Jamaica is guaranteed to be alot more fun...their culture is laid back and easy going..along with plenty of the sweet leaf in the area
You look so grown up in this thumbnail, Huub!
Haha. Probably only in the thumbnail 😂

Well u tried ya best with the auto pilot.. Seems very authoritarian in Cuba, mind u no surprise there..Jamaica huh! Nice.. As I mentioned in my email I have a good friend there, decent guy, he live in London 20 plus years n Philippines about 7.. Very genuine sweet guy.. I'll send him ya fb if ya want..
Buddy I am living in Trinidad
Are you doing any fishing for food?
Not yet!
@@HuubVlogs you definitely must! Its food just under your boat. I know you can catch a few things to keep the belly full, or perhaps find what people are looking for in the area, get a lobster/crab cage, or something else. I know the resources are there for you to enjoy. Eat up! Fishing pole is a MUST on a boat sirs!
@@HuubVlogs good luck , seems pretty unfriendly in that communist area though can't wait to see the Jamaica adventures and the auto pilot solution. Very inspiring to see you overcome such obstacles and rebuild things !!
@@HuubVlogs *_ JUst be cautious with Baracuda in certain parts of the Caribbean as they can contain the toxin Ciguatera which will land you in the hospital! _*

Hello Huub, I still enjoy your adventures. It's a nice distraction from the warcrap here in Europe. Do you have a good contact cleaner to help combat electrical problems?
Hi Jelcke, no I don't. But I will add it to my list of things I need! thanks
Huub, your a very patient man. On camera that is, lol. Not laughing at you, just release. I don't think I would be giving Cuba any more of my money.
I agree with you Melinda
Dude you need a wind-vane steering system as a backup. Most boats have them. There is a youtube video out there that shows you how to use your front sail in place of the expensive windvane by hooking up directly to your rudder steering arm.

hahaha!
Huub, we've chatted a little on Facebook, my name is mikel bentley, I'm leaving keywest next week headed to the Bahamas, hope to see you around . I've not had an autopilot handsteering can be very exausting...
Have fun. See you somewhere!

I will try! Will buy that contact spray!
bro you shouldve just bought that other boat that was just a bit bigger and in better condition. feels bad to see you breakdown in every video.
I tend to make bad choices in life!
Common Huub you are not stupid, you are in cuba. If you are not in a marina you are out on territorial waters and therefor a thread or possible smugler. Therefor you can go to jail indefinatly , so it is nice of the guys to try to pretect you. But you are to eigenwijs.
